Works like a champ!.......2007-11-11
I had the PNY 8Gb Attache and it jammed up with large file transfers and was a real pain as I wanted to use my flash drive as back up to My Documents. The Lexar works great and was pretty quick for the first transfter (~3Gb). The design is really smooth and fits in the hand well. The color is stylish (like the black...goes with my Thinkpad) and the capacity bar works as advertised. The "activity light" is a nice blue and it looks good with the all black stick. The sides curve in slightly (much like my Palm TX) and it's easy to remove the cap. That's one final point. The USB plug has a real cap that fully protects the connectors from dust and contamination. I don't like the new SanDisks as the USB plug retracts and doesn't protect it against dust, dirt and lint if you put it in your pocket.
Lexar Secure II 8MB.......2007-10-31
While I am a big fan of this product (I have a 2mb), this one did not live up to its predecessors. It only worked intermittently, even with a software reinstall and I had to return it.
I have gone back to using my old Secure II
Ease of Use, and portable between XP and Mac.......2007-09-10
On an XP Box you can run the software for securing your vaults directly from the stick, making it all that more secure. It's a bit of a problem on the Mac, because you have to run the software as an application in the Applications folder. There are better sticks for the PC, that include a suite of secure software on the stick, but it is not portable to a Mac. So, if you need cross-platform performance, this is the only game in town. Well worth the price.
Lots of Storage for Backup, Video Transfer.......2007-09-04
Had this product for a month now but I have had the 512 MB Secure II Drive before so all of the workings are familiar to me. If anything the software is easier to use and plugging and unpluggging more seamless other than the requisite password (used to require going thru the file system to activate, now the Dashboard is ready to use most all of the time)
Key feature is the 8x memory increase that allows me to transfer video files from Media Center, backup my laptop in realtime and also store more of my key files in the hardware encrypted security.
The only downside that is a minor is that I do not know if the realtime memory usage indicator is working properly as it always seems to indicate that I am using 40% when I am not.

as advertised.......2007-11-15
This worked just as advertised. The included software did just what I wanted it to do and is very easy to navigate.
What, secure?! You have to be an administrator!.......2007-03-29
I am giving this unit the lowest possible score for the reasons below. The fact that this is product by Lexar is actually named "Secure" invokes the belief it really is secure. However, I have been discussing this with Lexar for over two weeks now, without resolution.
The problem is that the Encrypted Vault (the reason I purchased the thing) is not available except when signed in as an administrator. Hello??!! Why would Lexar build a unit that is smaller than some earrings my girlfriend wears if they did not expect it to be used as a portable device, meaning it would be used in many different computers? So, if you go to the library, or at work on a network, or at your friend Billy's house, and you are not the administrator, YOU LOSE! The only way around this is to put your most sensitive material right on the public drive, and not use the secure features of the drive. Does that make sense?
I was sent the software version by Lexar with no improvement, and have tried all of their suggestions, and now the unit will display the Microsoft Windows error screen and shut the drive down.
To be fair, if you do not need to access sensitive material on any computer (without admin rights) then this unit could work for you. It works great on my home computer, but I just have to admit that with a PORTABLE device I tend to want to PORT it around and use it on other machines and cannot.
If you need to access your data on many machines, and wish to do so without admin rights, beware! I suggest you look at the Lexar website and contact them to make sure this is possible. I'm still wrestling with them, and am hopeful I can take them to the mat and pin them, and will be able to actually use this storage device as advertised.
Amazing product!.......2007-03-13
This flash drive has served me very well. It's fast, reliable, and survived a trip through the washing machine and dryer with all data and functionality intact. I use it frequently with a Windows XP machine and an OS X machine. Buy this drive! You won't regret it.
Glitch Using ThumbDrive .......2006-05-30
I've had several Lexar Secure II thumb drives. I purchase them because you can encrypt your data. Not many other thumb drive makers provide encryption software in their thumb drive. All of my Lexar drives worked fine initially, for about a month, then eventually a glitch shows up in all of them. This same glitch occurs when inserting the thumb drive in both my desktop and laptop computers, so I guess that the glitch is probably in the thumb drive, not the computers.
The glitch is that I am unable to "Safely Remove the Hardware" when I click on the drive removal icon at the lower right hand corner of the screen. I am force to do an "unsafe" removal by simply pulling the thumb drive out. I believe that this technique may be corrupting some files in my computer to the point that often I get the "blue screen of death" when I shut down. This "blue screen of death" probably occurs because the computer is unable to remove the thumb drive when it is trying to shut down.
I do not have removal problems with thumb drives made by other companies, that does not have the encryption software. My guess is that the glitch in within Lexar's encryption software.
It is obviously difficult to provide trouble free encryption software in thumb drives. If it was simple, then more thumb drive companies would do so.
This glitchs makes the thumb drive not very usable because each time you do an unsafe removal, you run the risk of corrupting more files in your computer and possibly ruining it. Overall, I've wasted my money on these drives and will never buy another Lexar drive again.
Encryption is not for Macs yet, not for Windows domains.......2006-05-25
I bought this because I wanted an encrypted device that I could use to offload personal documents I receive while traveling for work, and then read them using my Mac(s) at home. Lexar JD II is the only product I found advertised to work with both Macs and PCs at the same time.
My primary Mac is an Intel Mac. Early on I realized the encryption utility only runs on PPC Macs. Okay, so I figured I'd use it on the PPC Mac Mini, and everything seeemed fine at first.
Then I hit a problem where my Mac Mini could not read video DVDs. A little search on the Mac support forums, and I found that installing Lexar JD software disables video DVD support on my Mac! Fortunately there were instructions on how to uninstall.
Aside from the problems with the Macs, I also hit the problem another reviewer mentioned, which is that you must be logged in as a LOCAL administrator to use the encryption software under Windows. Since my work PC is a member of a domain, I had to create a local account, log off the work domain and back on as a local user to use encryption anyway. Kingston Data Traveler Elite works fine under Windows domain logins, unfortunately for me they don't have Mac software yet.
So in summary the current Lexar encryption software:
- Can't be used on a Windows domain machine
- Can't be used on an Intel Mac
- Breaks the DVD on a PPC Mac
It's not for me!
However if you are using the Lexar strictly on stand-alone Windows PCs, OR you don't require encryption, it should be okay.
Customer Reviews:
Not for Vista.......2007-12-27
I've owned this drive for at least a year now and really love the Secure 2 features that come with it.
However, that being said, do not order this if you are running Vista. I can not use the software with my Vista laptop and Lexar has been less than helpful in trying to get a patch. They emailed a link for a patch that required a password sign in that they did not provide and would not return further email inquiries.
In summary, don't hesitate to purchase the 512 MB if you are running XP, but avoid it if you are running Vista.
