Customer Reviews:
Capable but Cumbersome..........2007-12-01
PROs:
Excellent image quality for both pictures and videos. Scales large images to 800x600 very good.
Random Image viewing.
Extensive memory card options.
Quick and effortless slide show.
Very nice TFT adjustment capability: (Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Hue, Sharpness).
During slide show if one presses the INFO button, it will display image stats and details on the screen for each pic.
During a video play, the INFO button alternates between time left to play, time played, and no time display options.
CONs:
No internal memory other than the inserted memory card.
Bad documentation.
No USB connection to PC. The USB connection on the unit is for attaching flash drives only.
Does not retain settings after poweroff and does not save them to preferences folder even though it displays the folder itself.
Slide show delay ranges from 1-10 secs only.
Video display very cumbersome unless in the right format and size to begin with.
No sound capability.
Remote works but buttons are very close together and forces one to press using fingertips or nails. Otherwise one hits the wrong keys by mistake.
COMMENTS:
While the image displays worked without any effort and slide shows were very easy to setup, the video displays were very cumbersome. I could not find a format that made the AVI files work. I tried 8 different codecs to encode the files and neither was recognized. I submitted a tech support question to Royal asking for the proper encoding for the AVI files. While the documentation says that it will display mpeg files, it does not work with regular mpeg (mpeg1 and mpeg2) files. The only mepg format I could make it display was MP4. In MP4 format it displayed 320x240, 480x272, and 480x320. I could get it to play a 45 minute video of 203MB size without a problem.
Overall it does what it is supposed to do - display images in high quality. All the quirks are workable. I would recommend the product highly.
Good for the price.......2007-04-23
This is my first digital picture frame, so I do not have anything to compare it against. I am generally very happy with this product - it is very easy to use, and I am happy with the resolution and the picture quality.
The only downside to this frame is that the instruction manual is not helpful at all, and as one other reviewer noted, I had to learn how to do things by trial and error. I also do not like that when you make changes to the layout - rotating or deleting images, it is not "saved" to the memory card and so you need to make the changes each time.
However, I like this product enough to buy more of these for the grandparents this next Christmas.
Good enough...for now (and the money).......2007-02-08
In an effort to de-clutter my office, I bought this online for less than $100. For the price I am pleased with this product. With that being said there are numerous areas needing improvement.
The setup was less painful than anticipated; however, the owner's manual was not that much help. You need to be ready to go through the trial-and-error process. With all that being said it took my less than 20" to have this up and running.
It read the pictures on my SD card w/o a problem. I had 11 pictures ready to go by doing the following before the frame arrived:
1) Resized the 4MB pix down to a 800 x 600 scale (about 50K in size) using Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
2) Changed the orientation of the 3 landscape pix to portrait using MS Paint (created artificial black borders).
The first problem I ran into was its default orientation is landscape, thus I had to rotate all the pictures with the remote one at a time during the slide show. Not that big of a deal, but I don't want to do that every morning when I turn on the unit and find that my pictures have been rotated back to landscape. Funny that my slideshow settings (e.g., advance every 10", use X transition) are saved when I power down, but the picture orientation reverts back to landscape. Therefore it's back to Picture Manager and Paint to make everything a landscape format. I'll also keep in the back of my mind not to rotate the camera when I'm taking pictures of the kids.
Second issue is the resolution isn't that great. This frame is replacing a "real" picture of the kids and there is a noticable difference in the resolution. I know, I know - it's not far to compare a real pix with this frame; however, don't expect the images of your pictures to have the kind of quality as the picture on the outside of the box this frame came in. With that being said I am standing less than 3' away from the frame therefore can see the difference. When I increase that distance to just 4' it's a little easier on the eyes. The color is definately eye-catching when you enter my office from 10+ feet away from the screen.
Final issue is reliability. Within the first hour of operation I have had to re-boot the device twice. In the three days I have had this, I have had to reboot this at sometime during the day. On the one hand it wasn't that big of a deal to power off/power on then pressing the four buttons required to get to the slideshow, but there is a nagging concern that six weeks from now a reboot will not solve a problem. This is what I expected at less than $100.
Very much looking forward to the day when I can get double the resolution and dictate what the default orientation is for the same $100. Until then this will do fine (if it holds out that long).
Great digital photo frame ! .......2006-11-08
I compared several digital photo frames before deciding on this one. I managed to get one of these off another website for $110, It was the best among the three that I have. I had the digital spectrum 5" photo frame which could play music and video and all but looks like a toy and the resolution was poor with limited viewing angles. The second one that I had was from Radio Shack - Optimus - it was 7" but the photo display was the same as the 5" as the 7" was horizontal not diagonal. (It's like the widescreen format but when you display a normal picture, it would only display black bars at the side. The Optimus has fantastic resolution and viewing angles but it does not accept CF cards and does not play videos. Finally, I settled on the Royal 8". For the price - I think it was the best in terms of value and function among the three.
The pros of Royal PF80 : (1) Accepts CF, SD, MMC, MS; (2) Plays avi video (minus sound), (3) fantastic resolution and viewing angles; (4) 8" diagonal screen is big enough to be seen across the room; (5) Comes with remote; (6) Removable silver frame but there was not extra bezel in the box
The cons : (1) No speakers and no sound output; (2) AC wire is a little short; (3) Setup is not fully plug and play. You need to select a few buttons before it would play, (4) The build is still plastic but at least it was painted like a photoframe and thus, does not look like a toy .
The quality is comparable to the Westinghouse 8" sold at Bestbuy but at half the price !

Royal 16-Sheet Cross Cut Shredder.......2007-10-15
The shredder does a nice job and overall I am very pleased with it. The bin is very nice a holds a lot before it has to be emptied. I have shred about 4 lawn bags full of paper so far with no problems. A couple of things that I found disappointing are: 1) the advertisements said it would do staples and the instructions said to remove the staples. So far I have not removed them. 2) It seems to be a bit underpowered. I have never tried to shred 16 sheets a once, but would be surprised if it would handle 16. It sounds like it will plug at about 12 sheets. However, I have not plugged it yet.
I have a Fellows at home and use this Royal for my office. The Fellows seems to have more power, but I like the basket of the Royal. Can't beat it for the price.
Shreds the competition.......2007-09-15
I got this shredder about a month ago and so far, it's been great.
I had one of those over the wastebasket types before but those presented several problems:
1. The feed slot was so small, I actually had to open the junk mail and feed in separate pages
2. The paper would only be shredded into long strips - not very secure
3. Strips of paper would inevitably fall all over the floor would I would left the shredder off the wastebasket to empty it.
This unit presents none of those problems. - I can feed an entire junk envelope directly into the shredder and it's shredded into very small bits. There is no mess because the wastebasket just slides out from the unit well below the shredder teeth. I use a trash bag for easy disposal.
The one minor problem is that sometimes the trash bag trips the "bin full" alert which then beeps continously until fixed. I just pull the basket out and then put it back which clears the situation right away.
Overalll, a great product
Nice product.......2007-08-08
My company always purchased shredders under $50 and all were in the trash before a year was up. This shredder is easy to use, has a nice large bin, and doesn't struggle getting the job done. If you've ever used shredders that you removed from their waste baskets, sometime the shards made such a mess. Not with this. Simple remove the waste bucket and empty into your recycling bin. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs to shred a fair amount of documents.
shredder is fine, but why the oil?.......2007-06-13
The shredder is fine and it came really fast, but this Royal doesn't need the Fellowes oil that is recommended. Manual says do not use Petroleum-based lubricants.
Cross cut shredder is great.......2007-03-18
The shredder easily takes 16 sheets and is fairly quiet for office use

pleased .......2007-01-14
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my sister-in-law. She is very into digital photography and takes really great pictures. I was a little disappointed at how small the screen is, but my gift recipient was satisfied with the size. She reported that it was very easy to load with over 46 pics and loved the idea of having all these portable pictures with her on her keychain.
Not bad.......2007-01-10
It's a clever and fun idea, but unless you carry a magnifying glass, the pictures are pretty hard to see. It's a cute little gizmo for a reasonable price.
not mac compatible.......2006-07-11
We got two of these for Christmas, and just went to upload pictures on them only to find out that they are not compatible with Mac computers. It doesn't specify this anywhere on the packaging, or on their website or technical specs. It's too late to return them, and one has been opened. So we are disappointed!
Great product!.......2006-05-24
I recently purchased this item and I was impressed! I just had a baby and it is a great way to showcase pictures of my baby without having to dig through my wallet for photos. (It would make a great baby shower gift!) It was easy to install and upload pictures, and the crop feature is helpful, too! The picture quality isn't the sharpest, but it is fine and worth the purchase!

No Heavy Shreddin'.......2007-11-16
For basic strip shredding, this Royal Eight Sheet Shredder is pretty handy. It can handle eight sheets, although it sometimes sounds as if it's about to die if you put in more than four sheets at a time. There is a reverse function, but that can cause quite a mess if you aren't careful. The automatic feed does work excellent, however.
For light shredding duty at home, this is a good buy. That's why I'm giving it four stars. However, if you find yourself needing to shred large amounts of paper every couple of days (as in an office, perhaps), go with a different shredder.
Amazon.com Product Description

It used to be that trash was trash. Throw it out and all is okay. Not anymore. Now predators scour through garbage and try to find documents that contain social-security, credit card, and other financial identification. Soon, completely beyond your awareness, you start collecting debt. The crime is Identity Theft - a relatively new and heinous crime that's an outgrowth of our technological revolution. Getting a shredder is one way to prevent being a victim. 9-Inch Wide paper feed Built-in wastebasket
Customer Reviews:
Plastic.......2004-11-16
This is my second shredder. The first one died after about 6 months... the teeth on its plastic gears broke off so it no longer worked. I replaced it with this shredder - the ag10x, as it is supposed to have metal gears. The gears may or may not be metal, I haven't checked, but there are spacers between the cutting blades that are plastic, and these are breaking and falling out, allowing the blades to slip and not cut. This one lasted about a year, so twice as long as the other one, but now I am again looking for something better.
Ketchup makes the best of the situation........2004-05-13
AG10x has lasted for almost a year with light daily shredding so I do not feel that plastic parts have ruined quality of shredder. In my other review I wrote about plastic gears,I do not mean visible plastic spacers betwen cutting wheels but gears which are attached to electric motor inside shredder visible upon disassembly. One tip for any owners would be to remove door underneath which closes as basket fills and traps shredded paper inside cutter wheels jamming head.It then shuts down with warning light but one plastic spacer did not like treatment and slipped out of place. If shredder has problems like this do not reverse shredder, turn over and remove paper manually with tweezers. Also obey warning not to shred for more than two minutes,my old shredder died a horrible death because I shredded for 30 minutes.I shred my old credit card which is a rare event but I pre-flight shredder by checking underneath. (...).
I agree with previous reviewer........2004-03-23
I agree with the previous reviewer. I had this machine for just over a year and some of the plastic spacers broke, rendering the machine inoperable. There are metal gears on the machine, but they are separated by plastic spacers. I understand from postings elsewhere that Royal won't sell parts due to safety concerns. So, now I'm left with a machine for rubbish day and a pile of unshredded materials.
Royal AG10X.......2003-09-09
I've had this shreader for a year and have only positive things to say about it.
Ketchup is a vegetable........2003-06-13
Description states that shredder has all steel gears which attracted my attention so I purchased one expecting what was advertised.Plastic gears cannot handle torque and break which happened to my old shredder. When new AG-10x arrived I noticed that mention of all steel gears was not on box so I began to smell a rat.I decided to remove back cover and take a look and you guessed it-there were plastic gears. The gears which take most of the stress are steel but about half of total number are plastic.Old shredder had gears which were part plastic and part metal so maybe they mean that gears are completly steel without any plastic.Plastic gears are completly plastic too but they did not brag about purity of their plastic gears.

good little machine.......2007-09-03
Works great for my needs. Compact and powerful, plus a pencil sharpener! You have to fold 8x10 sheets of paper to fit them into the shredder slot, but if you don't mind doing that, it's perfect for taking care of junk mail.
