Problems ..........2007-07-16
My new SD14 came with so many 'problems' that I had to return it
to Amazon. Now I'm waiting for the replacement to arrive.
Some of the problems could have been corrected if I had installed
the newest firmware but others were serious issues not related
to firmware, such:
- when a 'subject' was in perfect focus in the viewfinder the 'subject'
would be out of focus in the actual picture. The actual focus would
fall somewhere behind the 'subject'.
- during prolonged outdoor use, the camera would overheat and shutdown
by itself.
The overall performance of the camera is somewhat disappointing ( for its price range) , with 'slow' and inconsistent auto focus and auto iris. And it takes too long for the shots ( high res. raw ) to be transfered to the CF card ( even with the fastest card available in the market )
The Sigma Pro Photo software is a nightmare. It's extremely slow ( even
in my Mac G5 )and 'buggy'. It often 'refuses' to save converted files.
Having said all that, when you are lucky and the camera actually
'works' the resulting pictures are nothing less than 'MAGICAL!!!
The Foveon chip is outstanding. It produces an optical resolution in par with conventional (bayer) cameras with 10+ Megs and the lack of conventional bayer interpolation makes the pictures look like 3D shots.
The noise levels below 400 ISO are very low as well.
So, I've decided to give the SD14 another chance hoping that the
replacement camera works as it is supposed to.
