Customer Reviews:
good prodcut.......2007-10-29
i bought this primarily for the D battery. and charging time is not a problem for me. it works as it says.
Good, but..........2007-09-07
I've had one of these units for at least 5 years. It has saved me TONS of money in new battery purchases.
However, contrary to what some other reviews have indicated, once a battery is fully charged, the charger still continues to provide a trickle current through the battery. This does keep the battery warm, and I would highly recommend not leaving batteries in the charger once they've fully charged.
If a battery is too weak to get a full charge, you may get some leakage if left in the unit too long. I am now looking to replace my old charger because the corrosion has gotten so bad, I can no longer slide one of the charging bays. There has NEVER been any leakage out of the unit in the 5 years I've owned it; it's all been contained within the charger.
I would also recommend getting a separate battery quality meter or even a simple DVM (Digital Volt Meter). I've found that if I remove the battery from the charger, let it cool down to room temperature (1-2 hours), then measure the voltage, it will give me a good indication of the remaining quality of the battery. If after a fresh charge the battery has less than 1.60 volts on it, I'll recycle the battery because I know it's on its final leg and may not even last a few minutes in a device.
I've also owned Ray-O-Vac and Renewal chargers and found the capabilities of this unit with standard alkalines to be comparable to the proprietary Renewal batteries (NB: standard alkalines will NOT fit in a Renewal charger station!)
Great battery charger.......2007-01-04
This charger works very well. So far I have charged 8 AA's. Don't expect a quick charge though; this is not a 'rapid' charger. After all, slow charging is best for your batteries!
8 Batteries always at the ready! Alkaline, NiMH or NiCDs.......2006-09-03
Some introduction to rechargeable batteries and this unit:
I own two of these large chargers - so I actually have 16 batteries ready at any time - and, the sizes it will charge include all standard household battery needs: Each unit will charge up to 8 AAA , AA, or 4 D or C size batteries (with space for one 9-Volt battery, in addition to the eight other slots, on each charger), I have been surprised to discover over time just how many AA and AAA batteries, especially, I need and use over the course of time. I don't consider my own home-battery needs to be particularly unusual. They include, in part:
- Digital still camera (2-AAs)
- Wireless optical computer mouse (2-AAs)
- Wireless front door chime (4-AAs)
- Battery powered PDA (2-AAAs)
- 2 Battery powered night-lights (4-AAs each)
- 2 handheld micro cassette recorders ( 4-AAs)
That's a partial list and totals 22 batteries already. In addition, our several smoke and CO2 detectors are powered by 9-Volters. Of course, we never need them all changed and the same time, so the capacity of the two chargers is more than sufficient. Of course, the needs of every household will be different, and everyone will (probably) need some non-rechargeables for specific purposes (Cs and Ds for flashlights and other items for which rechargeable batteries don't usually last long enough to make their use worth while.) But, they ARE useful, money saving alternatives for MANY common household uses and these specific units, though they are a tad on the large size (footprint is 9 ½" X 3 ½" and it is 2 2/12" high with the clear hinged top closed) and heavy (weighs over 1#) on the weight side and are a good investment. It is not a portable not a `rapid charging' unit and will need a stable home. I am partial to the NiMH batteries for my own uses, though yours may dictate use of one or both of the other two varieties (Rechargeable Alkalines and NiCDs that the units will re-power.)
Here are some details about the chargers themselves:
Capacity:
Either of the following with approximate full-charging times:
8AAs (14 hours) and can be mixed (in pairs) with AAAs (4 hours)
Different sizes/storage capacity AA's must also be charged either singly on in pairs in separate bins from AA's of other capacities (1700s vs 2600's, etc.)
4Cs (7 hours) and can be mixed with Ds.
1 9V (12 hours)
(When I travel, I carry a smaller unit that charges fewer batteries more quickly.)
There are four slotted bays in the charger - each holds two of the smaller (AA or AAA) sizes or one each of the larger (C or D) sizes. Sizes and types (Alkaline, NiMH or NiCD) can be mixed for charging within the unit, but NOT within one of the paired slots. The 9-Volt connector is separated at the end of the unit and must be used without charging other batteries at the same time. This is one of the units few shortcomings.
Each of the four paired `bays' has a red LCD which lights while the batteries in it are still charging and goes off as soon as they are fully charged. The unit stops charging them automatically when they are full so there is no risk of overcharging them.
There are many good reasons to use rechargeable batteries. They last longer in most high-drain devices; with extras in the charger, power is always available; and they are good for the environment - Since NiMH batteries can be reused hundreds of times, they produce far less waste. Plus, since they do not contain toxic chemicals, they can be recycled or disposed of with your regular trash.
I own other rechargers, each holds fewer batteries and charges them more quickly - but for regular availability of multiple batteries in my own home, this Rayovac has become my preferred charger. I have had the first one for nearly three years and purchased the second about a year ago. Neither has even malfunctioned in any way. If you have the need for multiple batteries at the ready, I would encourage you to get ahold of this RAYOVAC PS3 - an inexpensive and reliable household appliance.
Highly Versatile.......2006-03-20
I got an Olympus 700-series camera 3 years ago and this camera uses AA cells instead of a battery pack. It also drinks batteries like water if you use the flash. It also needs 1.5v batteries - Nimh or NiCd's just don't work.
So when Ray-o-vac released the "Renewal" rechargeable alkaline battery, i was ecstatic. I got the batteries and got the charger. The ability to recharge these special batteries is what make it a 3-in-1 charger.
The charger is very smart; when a battery is charged it shuts off. I have read that this extends the life of most types of cells. I can also tell if a cell needs to be "topped off" by placing it in the charger - it will shut off right away if the cell is o.k.
The capacity is 1-4xD, or 1-4xC, or 1-8xAA, or 1-8xAAA cells. The ability to charge just one cell is an improvement over my GE stereo charger. I wish that Ray-o-vac made a charger that was 2x as large. When I get in the mood to charge I want parallelism, baby.
The contacts are good and the unit is reliable; it does what the marketing says it does, so I'm a happy customer.
NOTE: renewal rehargeable alkaline batteries are getting hard to find, but I believe there are now other makers of rechargeable alkaline batteries. Also, the renewal batteries only last about 20 charges, i've taken to writing the date on the batteries when i use them for the first time, and I try to keep them together in sets. Tonight I am looking to buy some generic batteries of this type, and I believe they will charge properly in my charger.
