Works very well. I ran my CD and DVD "test subjects" thru about 10 times and the discs would physically start to curl up, like a potato chip.
Which would further prevent any attempt to read them.
Of course, I was just playing around with this new toy, but I think just once thru the unit will really mess up any chances at recovery of data.

If you love gadgets, this is an extremely cool product to have. Its sleek and within seconds destroys your data. Its very compact and heavy duty, so its durable and can easily fit in a home office, as well as any place at work. You just insert the disc and within seconds thousand of tiny imprints are made on both sides of the disc making the disc unreadable.
This is a great product because it securely destroys the data without having to shred the disc and having shattered broken pieces of plastic everywhere. For anyone who has owned or operated a disc shredder, they are very messy. This is an excellent alternative. Is so quick and easy to use, anyone can operate it.

Practical, affordable solution.......2007-09-03
I purchased this product from Sun's website just to give it a try. It does everything it is claimed to do. Everything. My only complaint (and it's an honest issue) is that the device does not have rubber feet for stability. So if you do not press down on the eraser hard enough, it may slide a bit while you mar the disc. It wasn't a big issue with me because I have large hands and was able to simultaneously use the thumb and middle finger of one hand to press down on both ends of the 5" or so device, while the other hand slides the blade across the disc. That allowed me to create each of the grooves in single smooth pass.
Good job overall, Sun. Add some rubber feet though and you've got a perfect product!
By the way, this item is way more useful and cheap than using a shredder!

Nope. In developing the Disc Eraser, hundreds of discs were cut at varying locations with different patterns, and on both sides. Simply cutting the foil surface with a single razor blade DOES NOT prevent reading, since the blade is too thin. Unlike a blade, the patent-pending element is much thicker and guarantees data security. It's also 100% safe to the touch, unlike an exposed blade, which you wouldn't want in a home or office environment. You don't want to create a mess, so applying the Disc Eraser to the plastic underside instead of the top foil is cleaner, and since this method promotes CD recycling, the whole disc will be melted down anyways.
The benefit of this product is to provide safety and convenience - Sure, there are hundreds of "free methods", i.e. you can take your disc out to the garage and hammer it to pieces, but I am not selling another destructive device. The Disc Eraser is for those who value security, practicality, and environmentally friendly solutions. People who don't care will continue to break, cut-up, hammer, microwave, melt, etc... that is their decision to destroy discs and create eWaste. Anyhow, this be said, I welcome all skeptics and questions about this new product and technique.

For the price, it's a nicely packaged razor blade. I understand being an entrepreneur and making money, but....
You can do the same thing with any razor or box cutter. On the TOP, not the bottom, make the same cuts you see in the picture, pressing lightly, You only need to permanently scratch through the top layer to disrupt the reflective ability of the metal layer. when your done, flip it over and if you can see your cuts, your done. If not, do it again over the same lines you already created. Cost of a single box cutter and blade: $.99. =)

Replaced an Excutive Cross Cut shredder that was operating for 3 yrs.
CON: Pricey for a little item. I expected a larger/taller shredder bin, emptying the bin often. Throat is small, must fold the papers in 1/2 (lenghtwise). Can't access the blades to clean if self-adhesive labels get stuck.
PRO: The enclose bin keeps the paper dust contained. It does the job. Won't know the Shredder's life span, hopefully it will out live my previous shredder.

Like everyone else, I was looking for a way to destroy CD's/DVD's, primarily those used as backups. Now that it's possible to back-up almost an entire hard drive to a very few CD-sized media, it's important to maintain possession and version control. The possession is obvious: I wouldn't toss out an intact hard drive, for fear of identity theft, etc. The same is true of your backup media. Version control may be less obvious, but by dating my latest backups, and then shredding any older versions, I only have the "latest." There are good reasons to keep your older media - I'm just not going to debate them here.
The point is that this is an excellent shredder. Look closely at the illustration and you'll see what I mean "desktop" - it's really compact. And it does an excellent job. I've run all sorts of media through this bad-boy and there's nothing left but confetti. With shredded paper you could (if you had enough time, a flat surface and unlimited patience) put the original document back together again. Not so with this shredder.
For paper I've got a Royal 85X Confetti Cut paper shredder, also purchased from Amazon. It's great and the two of them take care of most of my shredding needs. My office is starting to look like Oliver North's....
Great for CDs, DVDs & Small Amounts of Paper and Cards........2005-06-30
I have a number of shredders and bought this one mainly for it's capacity to destroy CDs and DVDs. It does an excellent job of that. It literally destroys them and they're totally useless and forever lost. The same for credit cards and small amounts of paper --- although I wouldn't buy it for paper as there are other machines far superior for that.
I did, however, have a disappointment with the unit. It simply balked at taking a diskette. It's advertised that it destroys these. And it does if you can get it through the throat.
Fortunately not many people use these anymore but I have some old ones I wanted to get rid of and was not happy with the results I got from this unit in my one attempt to get a floppy through. I plan to call tech support and see if I had misunderstood something or done something wrong.
The floppy finally did get through but only after jamming and balking. Once through, it was destroyed totally.
For CDs and DVDs, I highly recommend this little unit. It's very powerful and Royal has good and fast tech support. I own another of their small shredders and found that to be so.

Desktop Destroyer.......2005-02-03
This is perfect for the desktop. It excels at destroying credit cards, DVDs, CDs and Floppy Disc. In an emergency you can use it to shred paper, including staples.
Because DVDs, CDs and Floppy Disc are dense, they lay flat, and take up very little room in the debris basket. Since paper is light, it will bunch up, filling the debris basket fast. If you do a lot of paper, you want to consider a paper shredder with a larger basket.
Because it is shredding polycarbonate and metal, the feeder slot snuggly fits DVDs, CDs, and Floppy Discs. This reduces the chance of high energy debris. Do Not look into the slot while shredding. Because of the snug slot, feeding paper into the MD100 is not quick. If you want to shred less than 8 pages, but cannot leave your desk, you can use the MD100. If you want to shred more than 8 pages, or can leave you desk, it is better to use a paper shredder with a larger feed slot and a larger basket.
This is also a personal shredder, if you need to shred from more than two minutes at a time (approximately 24 DVDs or CDs or Floppy Discs), you should get a commercial grade machine.
Great for media.......2004-05-14
Literally destroys cds, dvds and floppy disks. I was surprised when it chomped its way through the floppies, metal and all and left nothing but little pieces. As far as paper is concerned, I would use an other kind of shredder such as a confetti type as this one you have to fold the paper so it doesn't always shred in small enough pieces. If you have media to get rid of, there is no better little shredder than this. I keep it next to my computer and it doesn't take up much room so it is very handy to use.

I had one of these. Computers can be frustrating enough these days. Don't kick the dog or yell at the wife. Go get a baggie, slip in your CD and wack it with your trusty hammer. Do this long enough and you not only work out your frustrations but you will have a completely destroyed CD. You won't need the Media Guardian. How can they call it the "Guardian" when you want it destroyed anyway? I'd like to see the FBI put that CD back together. :)
Sand Paper Would Be Just As Good.......2003-11-11
Just received this unit. Did not expect anything real sophisticated but did expect something practical. It is just two pieces of abrasive material mounted onto plastic--you rub the CD between the abrasive. Two pieces of sand paper will do the same thing. I am returning the unit unused. Unfortunately, I am now stuck paying postage both ways. Don't waste your money or time on this item!
