This excellent Garmin Vehicle DC Power Adapter for Nuvi (010-10723-06) is similar to that which comes with the Garmin Nuvi 250W and, I presume, some other nuvi models, even possibly other Garmin GPS devices as well. It may also work with some other products, any, in fact, which use a mini-USB socket as the power-supply port.
As has been noted here, though it is very well made, it is quite expensive for what it is. However, if you need an extra cable or your original one has been lost or damaged, this is a good additional one/replacement.
But here is the real reason for this review - the tip promised in the title: do NOT buy an AC Adapter for your device; buy this AC To 12V DC Power Converter which, for $4.67, allows this DC cable to be used via any AC outlet. This item will work with ANY DC cable which powers similar low-current drawing devices.
The combination is much less expensive than a DC cable plus an AC Adapter.
Poorly designed but essential.......2007-11-23
This is the same car adapter that is supplied with the Nuvi 370, so there is no need to purchase it separately unless you've lost yours or need a spare. Although it works just fine (and why shouldn't it, it's just a DC adapter?), the black plastic used to wrap the wire is not sufficiently pliable. It is unnecessarily stiff, especially when it is cold. As a result the cord often gets in the way. And the end that fits into the nav unit is at a fixed 90 degreee angle, so unless you are using the suction cup (illegal in at least two states) or the friction fit, the design of the cord means that the nav unit cannot lie flat. These are two very annoying design elements that have no place, in my opinion, with a fine product like the Nuvi 370. It appears to me that they tried to cut corners somewhere, and this DC adapter seems to have been the place.

Fits very snugly into car outlet and make sure that you push it in all the way or proper connection will not be made. Likewise, one has to exert some strength to remove adapter from socket. However, does indeed provide full power to Garmin on long trips.

Fantastic on longer trips or for use at night.......2007-12-15
I took a six hour road trip last summer and this device was fantastic in that I was able to use the backlight on my Garmin all the way and never had to worry about running down the batteries. I also use it at night when a backlight is pretty much essential. It conveniently plugs into the USB plug on the unit, and works fine with my dashboard mount. Yes, it is expensive, but I told a friend I would get him one for his Garmin as he was going to try and rig up one homemade in the hopes of saving some money. I thought that a car fire or toasting his Garmin is not worth the meager savings, or the risk that his homemade rig could go terribly wrong, so he will have a proper power source for his Garmin this Christmas.
I took one star away because I do think it should have been priced less for what it does.
WAY OVERPRICED.......2007-10-09
No matter how much I want continuous power to my Garmin I just can't pay that much for a little power cable that costs probably $1 to make. It's the principle of it.
Instead I did some research and discovered a nifty little item called a USB car adapter for as low as two dollars! - then I can just use the USB cord that came with the unit! Only the wires needed for supplying power are used and not those for the data (they are separate wires in the cord). For more info do a search on Wikipedia for USB, and Goggle and right here at Amazon for USB car chargers.
I found a great dual charging unit elsewhere for $15 including shipping. With the dual unit I can charge my eTrex Vista HCx and phone or PDA, both at the same time. Just make sure the power output is 4.75 to 5.25V, that's the USB power specification. All but one of the units I found where in the proper power range though one was 7.2V, which is too high.
BTW, the little connector at the eTrex is also a USB connecter, just a different type (shape) then you may be used to. They call it a `mini USB,' while the larger one on the other end (of the cord that came with the unit) is a `USB type A', the same you typically see for computers and flash cards. It doesn't matter though, they are just differently shaped connectors that do exactly the same thing.
Don't pay Garmin's outrageous prices. Get a USB car adapter and power your eTrex through the USB cord supplied with your unit. It's the same as when you plug your unit into your computer's USB port and the computer supplies the unit with 5V power. Enjoy

Cable delivers power (as one would expect a power cable to do). No particular "features" to note other than the cable length seems to be quite ample to reach from the lighter socket to the device.
Garmin Power Cable for Etrex Vista C........2007-06-27
The Etrex Vista C uses a USB port connection to the computer, and the power cable matches the GPS end of the cable. It functions well, supplying power as needed. However, the cable attaches at 90 degrees to the back of the unit. Thus, the GPS cannot lie flat on the dashboard, in contrast with the previous Etrex Vista model.
The user must either buy the Garmin window mount, or come up with a way to hold the GPS unit off the dashoard. I use a dry kitchen sponge wrapped with a strip of rubberized drawer liner. I would have preferred the cable enter the GPS unit parallel with the back.

This adapter works great with the eTrex... It allows you to set the display lighting on all the time while driving... A big plus for visibility. And it saves on batteries.
The only negative I've found so far is that the USB connector fits my blackberry, so I thought I could charge it with this cable. This power adapter must have some curcuitry to detect the load being drawn, though. When my blackberry's power level is low, the power cable switches off every time I plug the phone in to get recharged.
Overall, no problems using it with the eTrex.

I ordered the car adapter that was listed with the GPS unit I was buying. I did not have an occasion to use the adapter until yesterday, 20 NOV 07, 31 days after ordering, and was I surprised. You sold me an adapter that does not work with the model I bought. It is also past your return limit of 30 days, so I am SOL. I'll just find some place else to buy from in the future.

I really love my Garmin Rino 120 GPS receiver, the only downside is it tends to eat batteries fairly quickly. Well with the adapter, all the time I am in my truck I keep it plugged in, viola! No worry about batteries. The cord on this unit seems very robust and is extra long, so its not a problem to put your GPS receiver where you want and not have to worry about the power cord not being long enough. I would ***highly*** recommend that you get the window mount for your Rino 120 and use it with the DC power cord, it makes for a great team and you will never lose your Satellite signal from placing your GPS receiver in a cup holder (which is I what I used to do before buying the window mount kit)

I don't know why amazon has this listed for the Rino 5xx series radios - they require more power and use a lithium ion recharable pack to get it. This adapter is for the 1xx series radios designed around disposable batteries. YOU NEED A DIFFERENT ADAPTER FOR THE 5XX SERIES - THIS IS A WASTE OF MONEY FOR THOSE RADIOS. Amazon should know better.

The item is fine. It was the wrong DC adaptor for the Garmin unit purchased. It was listed along the Garmin unit as the correct one for the unit. It was for another Garmin line of products. I'm sure it worked well on the correct product.

Garmin continues to amaze me with their technology. The Etrex is one of the most basic GPS units that you can buy (also the cheapest). Without the cable, the Etrex is wonderful for nearly all GPS needs that arise. But with this cable, the Etrex is extremly powerful! With free software on the internet, you can send/receive information quickly from your computer and GPS.
The power option on this cable is also very convenient for long trips. I use my GPS in my vehicle quite a bit, and it is very handy knowing that when you get out of the vehicle, the disposable batteries within the eTrex have not been used. A dead GPS is worth absolutely nothing!
If you are just getting started into geocaching or other types of basic navigation, the eTrex and this cable is a very satisfying combination. The only reason that I gave it 4 stars is that the connector pin that attaches to the GPS tends to slip out with a minimum amount of force (not the cables fault). Depending on how you look at it, this is also a convenience if you need to disconnect the cable quickly.

This cable, though listed under accessories for the Garmin eTrex Vista C, does not fit this gps. Works fine with the older model eTrex so I won't lower the overall rating but want other Vista C owners to be aware. It is a listing error, not a cable error.

The way this cable should have been made is with the Y connection near the cigarette lighter adapter instead of near the GPS. If the gps is placed on the dashboard, you have a cable stretched across your passenger seat to the laptop which gets in the way but I have used this cable and it works well.
