nice features, works great very convenient but one the sides keeps falling off because it's 1mm too short. not enough of a big deal for me to send it back.

It definitely does work, i'll give it that. I have a 3.5inch 500GB or so PATA HD in the thing, plug it into my laptop via USB. No errors or anything after weeks of heavy use.
The fan seems like it rubs a little. When you first turn it on, the fan spins noisily, and there is a little banging sound as the blades seem to rub on something. I have had this happen to other cooling fans, and they don't last long when they are rubbing, so I'm not very confident this one will last. It sounds sick, sick as in not healthy. Within a minute or two of powerup, the fan slows down and is less noisy and irritating and sick-sounding. And the hard disk does work.
The case has held together, but you can push the sides and it kinda flexes in, which doesn't inspire confidence but is probably structurally ok.
When I have moved the case/hard disk while powered on, it has "crashed" if I tap it the wrong way, causing me to have to turn the enclosure off and on to get it working again. I don't mean a hard tap -- I mean moving it setting it down onto a cushion (following me and my laptop) but without being very very careful to slowly position it onto the surface where it will lay. A little extra shock absorbtion in the case would help this I bet. I have a regular 3.5" HD in the thing and I know they don't like to be moved, and if you just want to plug this in to a stationary computer and leave it forever, you should be ok.

This item worked great for me. Easy to use. The cooling fan helped keep the drive cool when I was scanning for viruses and defraging.

This HD enclosure is a great tool, especially if you need to extend your HD with USB. However, it is made from a metal frame that screws together and the metal is not cut correctly so some of the side panels will fall out.

I purchased this case as a replacement for an OWC Mercury Pro DVD Burner With a failed firewire chip-set.
(I do not recommend OWC products)
This unit has a number of good features.
1) It has a built in power supply so it uses a standard power cord there is no clunky power brick on the cord.
2) It has an Oxford 911+ firewire chip-set.
3) It has a cooling fan
4) It has an on-off power switch a nice feature.
5) The unit comes with cables. It has 2 firewire/1394 ports and 2 USB2 ports. There is an included disk with drivers.
The case has a 2 piece metal top and bottom covered in plastic.
the sides and front plate are plastic and snap in place. while I prefer things that bolt together, I had no trouble installing the DVD deck or assembling the case.
I have been using this unit for about 6 weeks and have burned 30 DVDs with no problems. I believe this enclosure is a good value. If I needed another External case I would purchase this one again.
Some Notes: I use this on a G4 PowerMac with OS 10.4 Tiger.
I only use the firewire ports. I don't use the USB.

Quick tips:
Jumper must be set to "master" mode for all 3.5" & 5.25" drives (except 2.5" notebook drive)
A diagram of the jumper can usually be found on the manufacture's product label
Plug in all necessary cable and adapter before turning on power
Once the drive powers up, then plug in the USB cable
Hard drive with existing data should be recognize immediately
New hard drive must be formatted and partitioned
Format new drive under XP: Go to Control Panel > Computer Management > Disc Management - Under "Disc 1", Right Click and Initialize. After initializing, Right Click and Format and format wizard will appear. Please follow the wizard instruction to format drive.

This product allowed me to retrieve otherwise lost information from 2 hard drives that were unbootable. It worked flawlessly on a IDE and a Laptop drive.

I've had one of these enclosures for over a year and been really happy with it. I find the performance to be a little better with the firewire connection than USB if a 1394 port is available but I have not had any intermittent errors with either of the drives I've used in it. I have transfered many large files without a hitch.
The biggest advantage of this item from my point of view is that the seamless metal construction really seems much better and more durable than anything like it I've looked at. It uses a lightweight switching power adapter, so I can carry the entire setup in an old 'zip drive' bag.
No tech support when it fails.......2004-11-05
It resets intermittently and I can't copy more than half a gig without it aborting. I've sent 4 emails to their tech support and still haven't received a response. I would not buy an Argosy product again.

A very good 3.5" enclosure from IOGear........2005-07-29
It is a very sleek toy, IOGear has done a good job creating that thing; it is almost the only enclosure which supports HDD over 280MB. I recently changed my 300GB HDD to the Hitachi's 500GB and it works just fine, assembling the thing is easy enough and doesn't require much, the only thing the kit is missing is a firewire 9Pin to 6Pin cable. After trying several other enclosures I definitely decided to use that one although its plastic cover is not the lightest one available.
