Customer Reviews:
Looks like junk, but works GREAT.......2007-12-05
This is not meant to be a long-term, set it on your desk, solution. Its a quick cable to transfer data off a hard drive or between hard drives for an upgrade. I've used this with SATA, IDE and laptop IDE. All worked great. I was able to plug the USB device into either my Windows or Mac computers. Very happy with this product!
Its great for cases where a laptop gets destroyed, yet the hard drive is fine. I know someone who spilled water on their laptop, and pretty much fried it. But the hard drive was fine. Using this device I copied the hard drive files to her new computers.
I've owned devices in the past that can do this, but the 3-in one interface setup is awesome.
Definitely a "function over form" rescue device.......2007-07-27
I'm nonplussed at reviews mentioning how it's being used as a full-time connector for a SATA or IDE drive. It's clearly not aimed at that market at all. This is a kit designed for rescue/ recovery operations of someone else's HDD. Case in point: me.
I wrecked the partition table of my primary work HDD. All in-situ attempts failed, so I brought the laptop home, mounted the HDD to my SATA cable kit, and ran the excellent TestDisk tool from Christophe Grenier. My partition table recovered, I wrote it to disk and bright the HDD back into the laptop. I'm back up and writing this from the work laptop now (don't say anything).
I would never look at this complex jumble of wires and adapters and think "well, I'll just hook it up and let it go for a few years". No, sorry, incorrect application, despite the instruction manual showing you how to do it. This is a stripped-down kit designed to travel with your rescue ops laptop when making a house call, like to Grandma's PC. I find it's easier to run virus scanning, defrag, etc when the HDD is controlled by my known-good laptop.
I withheld a fifth star because it's a complex mess of wires. I don't know how one could make it look elegant and preserve its functionality, but whoever can do it merits the fifth star. Wholly recommended product for rescue operations.

must have.......2007-06-27
This is a simple, wonderful device. It is intuitive and flexible and a potential life saver.
Function over Form.......2007-04-11
I have many drives from various old computers lying around [ide and sata] that I need to access from time to time. This cable isn't pretty but its extremely useful. Thus far I haven't had any trouble accessing data on either ide or sata drives. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars only because I've been using it for such a short period of time.
Excellent for data transfer.......2007-01-04
I've used this device on dozens of drives already including, SATA, PATA 3.5" and laptop drives and in all cases, it works great. This is my most useful tool in my toolbox for fixing PCs. A "Must Have" if you work on computers frequently!! Great for transferring lots of data!

"Just works" No problems........2007-05-13
Only reason I don't give 5 stars...
Could have one of those spring loaded retractable cables. And WHY does everyone package stuff in those plastic bubble package things? It is such a hassle to get the product out of the package, and then it just becomes trash. Why not just use a little cellophane bag with a cardboard tab on top? That would be more environmentally friendly, lighter, and easier, and cheaper.
Very useful device.......2007-05-07
I work as a SAN and storage administrator. Much of the equipement I work on requires the use of a serial port to set up and maintain. Newer laptop computers, unfortunately, aren't equipped with serial ports. So, I bought the USB to RS232 converter to meet my needs. This product works great. It's easy to setup and works just like a built-in serial port. The converter comes with a driver disk. Although Windows Vista drivers were not specifically included on the disk, the Win32/XP drivers worked fine with Vista.
Garmin eTrex Vista.......2007-02-23
This worked perfectly for connecting my Garmin eTrex Vista to update firmware and to reload the marine database, and save/load area maps (XP Pro).
Good Price for Getting Use Out of Legacy Peripherals.......2007-02-16
The DB9M dongle is well built and does it's single task well. The added extender cable is also a nice bonus. This device allows for a male RS-232 (COM*) cable to be attached to a USB port. While the adapter is a female connector, it oddly has screw rods as if it were a male. This in no way affects the connectivity, but simply prevents some devices from being attached with their own screw rods (unless they are very long).
The included drivers are on a 80mm miniCD, so most slot-loading drives will not be able to use them. Using a tray-loading drive and copying the needed materials was no problem for me, though. Drivers for most any version of Windows as well as OSX are included. I was able to connect my Garmin Forerunner 201 GPS unit via Serial cable to my Intel iMac without any trouble using this device.
usb2 to db9 converter.......2007-01-22
I use this product with Tiki Navigator navigation s/w to connect my garmin gps 76 map to my laptop. This product was recommended by Tiki Navigator to use because it was previously reviewed as performing perfectly, which it does. It installs easily and with the blue led allows you to see if power is still connected. Highly recommended!

Did the job.......2007-12-10
Worked fine to transfer all data from the hard drive before sending my laptop in for repairs. I didn't need to go through driver installation procedures on the enclosed disk, just plugged it in and it was ready to go.
Works, sort of........2007-12-08
I have three IDE drives to try this on.
The Seagate 160G, never could get it to work.
Maxtor 160G, works every time.
Western Digital 120G finally got to work after setting drive jumper to Master with slave. Would not work when set to Master standalone.
Didn't try the ESATA.
Manual is the typical chinese translated to english type and doesn't have much in it.
Question you need to ask yourself if you're thinking of buying this is, do you feel lucky?
Good product.......2007-09-06
I use it with my laptop to access external IDE drives.
Flawless installation, good access speed.
I have not tested SATA yet.
Power supply is a little bulky, similar to a laptop's.

"Easy Installation"- not at all.......2007-12-18
The installation information was very specific and easy to understand. However, the inclosed CD did not contain anything near the files described on the instructions.
At least they did have a web site that did contain the described file for XP.
There isn't much to say about a serial-to-USB adapter.......2007-09-17
There isn't much to say about a serial-to-USB adapter. It works. The product was shipped to me in a timely matter. Great transaction. Thanks.
Does not work with Vista.......2007-08-24
The product did not work with Windows Vista and the manufacturer, CP Technologie (NOT Lexar as listed), refuses to provide the correct driver. Refusal to provide a driver is clearly stated on their web site. Zero customer service, zero support so I just wasted my money.
Works as Stated - Easy to Install.......2007-03-11
I needed this cable to use with my Garmin Rino 120 because my new laptop didn't have a serial adapter. My first try was to use a similiar product from Radio Shack, but I found the Radio Shack product was very confusing to use and was unstable. I ordered the CP Technologie product from Amazon and it worked great! Also, the CP Tech product was less than half the cost of the Radio Shack product (including shipping).
Extended life for my Palm Vx.......2007-02-18
This device is great for allowing my palmvx to be used via USB. Only downside is the style of the cable: metallic/steel wire under transparent encasing. I'd prefer if it were solid black/opaque white.

Good Deal.......2007-05-24
I bought this for my husband and he loves it, no problems and loves how it looks. User friendly.
Works but with some issues.......2007-04-05
I purchased two of these cases for two 500GB internal SATA drives. I wanted to use them as external drives. The cases cost a little more since they have a dual output - USB2 and eSATA. I thought the eSATA might come in handy if laptops start supporting it.
LIKES: I like the compact size and dual output nature. They are significanly smaller than products that come with cases already and are not that much bigger than the internal drive. The aluminum case does seem to keep the drive fairly cool but I added a small muffin fan blowing on the outside of the case to keep it closer to room temperature.
DISLIKES: Due to the compact nature, the power switch is on the back end (the end where the cables and power brick connects). The drive indicator/power light is also there. I managed to unsolder the LED and mount it on the front through a small hole I drilled near the edge. I ran three wires along the internal edge within a ridge and it all works well. However, for the cost this should have been done. I also had trouble with cheap parts. In particular the connectors on the USB cable did not fit well - they were loose and I kept getting write fault errors. I replaced the cable with a higher quality one I had around and so far it works fine.
In the end, I probably would have purchased a drive with a case already built in and skipped the future compatibility. By the time eSATA makes it to laptops (if ever), the drives will probably be ready for an upgrade anyway. I do not know if the eSATA will be that much faster due to the drive limitations (see eSATA on Wikipedia). Also, I don't know if, and what is the penalty for conversion from an SATA drive to a USB2 port.
Absolute Junk.......2007-04-02
Absolute junk. once you get the drive installed (for which there are no instructions - the instruction booklet only tells you how to install the drivers for various operating systems that no one has anymore), it is VERY difficult to get the computer to recognize it subsequent times. I had to reboot several times each time I want to see my data.
It is what it is.......2007-02-07
I needed a SATAII external enclosure because I accidently bought a SATAII hard drive instead of a PATA drive. I plugged in the wires to the drive and hooked it up to my computer. It worked just as advertised.
The only drawback is that it slightly more difficult to open than my metal gear box that I previously had. The screws are tiny (eyeglass size) and you have to take most of them out to remove the cover. The cover also does not fit just right without some effort. This minor inconvenience is worth it to me to get a good priced enclosure that does what it is supposed to do.

Good Product.......2007-03-08
A good product. Easily detected and installed on a WinTel platform.
I would have like it to be a bit more robust and steady hardware wise since the cable to the adapter head does not seem to be firmly connected
Works with eTrex.......2006-06-30
Used this to connect my Garmin eTrex with serial adapter to my USB only laptop. Installed with no difficulty and works as it should.
Performs as it should.......2006-06-17

Didn't have even to install the driver. WinXP recognized it as "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3)" to (COM6). Recomended product.
