And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-100 will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To transfer information to or from the WS-100 from a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, it's easy to download images, documents, and other files.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include adjustable microphone sensitivity, which lets you adjust the recording level to meet your needs; an easy-to-read LCD display; the ability to erase single or entire files; and a pair of stereo earphones.
The WS-100 runs for approximately 13 hours on a single AAA battery and weighs a mere 1.9 ounces. It's also backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

For the price of this unit I expected better clarity in the playback mode. It sounds very scratchy. I am disappointed with it.

First, let me say the speaker is not for listening in a crowded room. It's small and why would you want to listen, without earphones, to something this small in loud surroundings? The speaker is fine in a quiet room.
I found the mic to be amazingly sensitive. I use the lo setting. The hi setting picks up everything. I have used it outside in my hand, inside my shirt pocket and indoors in my hand and it is simply great for recording.
I love the usb capability. That makes it so simple to grab the file and pull it onto my Mac. I use "Switch" to make the file an .mp3 file. I then load it into garageband and edit it for my podcast. I am very pleased with it.
I have recorded over an hours worth of audio at the High Quality setting and the battery is still showing full. I love this little guy. I got a refurbished one and it's great. Should have bought this a long time ago.
I will place it on the pulpit and use it to record my sermons and then upload them to our podcast. The quality is THAT good.

This digital recorder was exactly what I wanted because of the long period of taping that it has. Also, the tonal quality is great even for a large room. I took it to church with me yesterday to try it out and it worked perfectly.

I recently bought the Olympus WS-100 to record notes while I was learning a foreign language. While I listen to CD's I wanted an easy way to record new phrases and words to review later.
The WS-100 is working out great. First, the features:
1. The unit records in high quality, standard quality and long play modes. You can get approx. 4, 8 or 27 hours of recording. I have found the standard quality to be the best compromise. While the longer record mode can be usable, the quality really drops here. I can't imagine using that mode for lectures. It's just about usable dictating right into the microphone.
2. The built in speaker is about what you would expect. Not great, but works ok if you recorded in one of the two better modes. It's a little more difficult with the low quality mode though.
3. The built in USB adapter is great. I plug into a Mac running OS X and it mounts just like a flash drive. The files are WMA though so you can't play with iTunes. You will need Windows media player or flip4mac. If you're running Windows, you will have the windows media player so you should be able to play.
4. The unit has a clock which will time stamp the files, however, you can't see the time information on the unit itself for your recordings. I have gotten in the habit of starting a recording with the date/time. Not a big deal, but it would nice if you could display this on the screen since the information is there.
5. You can't moves files between the 5 folders.
6. The quality using headphones is very good. If you use the low quality mode, it makes the recording much more usable than using the built in speaker. Keep in mind, this is not a stereo unit, although Olympus makes them.
7. I'm still on the first AAA battery after a week so I can't comment on battery life, but the reported 13 hours seems reasonable. Buy a couple NiMH batteries and you should be good.
8. There is no alarm features like some units have. I don't think I would ever use this but it's not an option.
9. The unit is very slim and easy to use. I have fairly large hands but I don't have a problem with the little buttons. I like the record button right on top. It's easy to grab and hit record even if you are in the car since you don't have to take your eyes off the road. You can then hit it again to pause or start the recording so the unit does not distract you.
Overall, a very nice recorder. I actually bought a refurb unit for about $20 less and it works great.

This easy to use recorder is fantastic if you're like me and wish you could replay a conversation.Sound quality is pretty good,at least through headphones-the built-in speaker is useless.Great if you have a PC-you can burn your recording to a CD(I don't know about Macs-maybe Windows for MAC would allow you to do the same).Takes so little energy,I've recorded half a dozen hour-long sessions and the battery indicator still shows full.Nice little piece of equipment!

Great portable entertainment.......2007-09-20
We have had our 2 Archos 500's for exactly 1 year and they have been heavily used and loved in our house. Perfect for traveling, going out to restaurants - we actually get to eat our dinner because of these pocket miracles!
I have been so impressed with how durable the units are. Our kids are age 6, 4 and 2 and as you can guess these poor units have been handeled with sticky hands and dropped countless times, and the units kept on ticking. Wouldn't you know it that it would be me (the adult) who would drop and break one of the pocket dishes. Since the unit was just shy of a year old it was still under warrenty. I called the customer service number on the Archos website and get this - A LIVE PERSON ANSWERED THE PHONE AFTER 3 RINGS! No press 1,2 or 3, just a real nice person who quickly helped me and emailed me my RA number. My unit is being repaired now, but we are still enjoying our other pocket dish when we go out to eat, in the car or plane.
If you have Dish Network it is so easy to hook up to your DVR and download onto the unit. We do not use the external speaker, but it works great with a headphone splitter so multiple people can watch and hear.
Got kids....Got a Dish Network DVR? This is the perfect traveling accessory! Amazingly super sturdy and extremely friendly customer service. Bravo Archos!
Super fine .......2007-07-13
I got one for my daughter about 10 months ago for photo storage while traveling. It worked just great until 2 days before she had to fly to Italy. Photo download is almost automatic if using a flash card reader and a mini-USB plug. I ended up getting an Archos 604 wifi for her trip ( a really neat unit but everything is extra- no built-in mini-USBs, no A/V jacks, no AC charger, but a trippy touchscreen and 30GB is a LOT of room= about 1000 photos + 400 songs + 12 movies, and still less than 1/3 full), while sending the AV500 in for warranty repair. The AV500 had a squashed 100GB drive from a swollen THICK battery- stay away from these batteries. ONLY Archos can replace the hard drives- has to do with HDD/firmware serial numbers. I just got it back after 2 weeks and the drive was replaced with a 120GB drive, but the right button worked intermittently (I opened it up and cleaned the contacts on the circuit (film) board = now OK. DO NOT do this if you have any warranty left- send it in. There are plenty of horror stories about warranty work quality, but they did right by me- this time! Video quality is perfect for me- great contrast, good resolution for my dvdfa3 480x272 vob-avi converted files. Audio playback/volume is outstanding (for me). The one tiny speaker is a joke.I haven't tried any video camera recording, so can't say yea or nay. I like it! It's a little bit thicker than the new Archos stuff, but you get everything in one small box!

I PURCHASED THIS PVR ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO , SO FAR I HAVE BEEN VERY SATISFIED WITH IT, MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS WHY NOT THIS PVR NOT HAVING A FM TUNER ON IT, \\\? IT IS WELL MADE, AND I AM HAPPY WITH IT, THE BATTERY LIFE IS GOOD TOO, I LISTED TO MY SONGS FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS AND STILL HAD ABOUT HALF JUICE LEFT IN IT. GOOD LUCK, BUY IT , AND ENJOY IT.WELL, I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT I PURCHASED THE EXTENDED BATTERY FOR IT SO IT IS ABOUT TWICE HAS LIFE IN IT.

Just like one of the previous user/buyer mentioned, it looked complicated but was really an excellent device once you get to figure out how it really works...my only problem now is how to record tv shows directly to this device and I would have given it a 5 stars then...I have to add that customer service did a good job when I needed assistance too...
Save your Money.......2006-10-01
If you are looking for a DVR that you can use with your Home AV system and take on the road, save your money and do not buy this device. The menuing system is HORRIBLE. Why they invented button icons instead of using standard conventions is beyond me. There should be one SELECT button, but there are several, depending upon which menu you are in. Just changing the sound from headphones to internal speaker is difficult. The internal speaker is OFF when it looks like it is on, and ON when it looks like it is off. You must also keep movie file size around 1gb or the playback will only show up to that point! Hooking it up to a home system works, but can be tricky depending upon the number of inputs you have on your home theater system. It is a cool device, but the drawbacks make it not worth the price. I'm a total techie, and this device stays in a drawer because it is just too difficult to work the device.

Quite complaining ..........2007-02-04
When reading these reviews, be careful. There are a lot of people out there complaing that this device wasn't able to replace an entire DVD collection, or that the video isn't high enough quality to play on a TV. Quit your complaining! This device is to be used to store and play video ON THE DEVICE.
The product description never states that you can use this device to replace your DVD library, or that you'll be able to hook it up in a movie theater and watch a movie on a 30x50-foot screen.
This device was made to do what it says ... to store and play back movies ON THE DEVICE.
Now, for the actual product. Yes, you can record video directly on the device. Granted, if you hook this thing up to a VHS player, or even a DVD player, you are actually encoding analog-quality material. Yes, I will repeat myself, even if you hook up a DVD player, it will not be digital quality. If you want true digital quality, encode your DVD with your computer, and transfer the file to the Archos! You'll get better quality video and audio without sacraficing hard drive space.
If you plan on hooking this thing up to a 31" television, expect loss of video quality! It's a no brainer! Same thing happens if you take a small .gif file off the internet and try to print an 11x14 out of it. It get's pixelated.
If you're looking for a good, solid and reliable device to replace your clunky "portable" DVD player, then this is the device for you. Granted, you have to encode your collection and load it on to the device before leaving home, but that's the price you pay for the convenience of not having to lug around your DVD library.
Is the interface as thought out as an iPod? Definitely not. But let's face it, Archos is NOT Apple. Apple does what it does very well. That's why the iPod is so popular.
Look, the bottom line is, this device does what it says it does. It stores video, music and photos, and plays them back. If your looking for something solely to replace your DVD library, buy an AppleTV. If your looking for something that plays music, then buy an iPod. If you want something to store photos, buy a friggin photo album. If you want to schedule and record TV, buy a DVD recorder or a Tivo.
This device does three main things (Movies, pictures, music), and it does so pretty decently. Don't buy this if your expectations are too high. If you are buying this in hopes to replace your iPod, tablet DVD player, digital picture frame, Tivo, microwave oven, 50" plasma TV, sister-in-law, etc., then you're setting yourself up for a huge disappointment.
Buy this device, toss on it a few movies, songs and family pictures, and take that vacation you've always wanted. At least this way you'll have some entertainment to pass the time during your trip.

I got rid of this after a few months of recording DVDs. I had hoped to replace my DVD with this digital storage, just like I did my CDs. But the resolution on the Archos is so poor (even when you set it to record on its highest resolution, which eats up considerably more storage space)that it broke down into pixels on my 27 inch LCD TV. It works great if all you intend to do is watch it on the Archos player or a tiny TV screen. I guess I should have expected this since the Archos only record thru analog. I also found the recording process very tedious. It is a simple matter of hooking it up to the DVD player and recording, but you have to wait through the 2 plus hour DVD to turn the unit off. You can set it to turn off automatically after a set amount of time, but that dead space at the end of the DVD recording while the machine waits to turn off also eats up your storage space. Overall, a great idea whose time has yet to come for replacing my DVD collection.

I purchased this a couple of months ago and love it. It is well made and the attention to detail that went into everything from the products design to the little things such as giving you batteries for the included remote control really sum up the feel of the product. It is well done. The video compression on the fly for recording off a VCR works great. The ability to pop in movies that one rips off a DVD and then recompress and play works well.
It holds my music, my videos. It's a super fast hard drive.
I purchased it after seeing a friend who had another archos product with a smaller screen. This one is perfect. The screen is just the right size.

Tips:
-If your on Windows, get the newest copy of VirtualDub and the DivX codec to really make your movies fly. You can use it to recompress DVDs and captured video (if you have the time)
-If your on a Mac, get Handbrake
-If your going to be displaying video on a TV that your capturing, tweak the contrast and saturation levels as well as the audio levels while viewing the "TV out" of the Archos, that way you know what your getting!

I began to love this item for about 4 months..I researched up everyone else's reviews and such to check on faults and other cons about it. I found none...until One day my archos's battery died completely...I even tried another spare power cable then...it just never came back on...so I sent in my player to archos support not too long ago...and hopefully they've fixed all the problems with it...
Other than the battery problem...the player was the best electronical deveice I owned...I had over 100 videos on there and 3 thousand songs...it pretty much consumed my life...

D-VHS Appears to Have Been Abandoned.......2005-10-18
On the one hand, the JVC D-VHS units are actually state of the art. I own two different units and they do a great job.
The key for any buyer to think about is how you want to use it. If your plan is to record OTA HD programming then these are the only game in town. If you want to build up a library of pre-recorded D-Theater titles, forget about it.
Problem is that buying one now is sort of like buying the latest in 8-track players. JVC, along with the studios, appear to have abandoned the D-Theater format. The quality of the D-Theater tapes is spectacular, better than CD and even higher bitrate that broadcast HD. Unfortunately, the last titles released were "Master & Commander" and "Passion of the Christ". Those will probably be the last ones ever. Even blank D-VHS tapes are becoming harder to find.
Most of the better D-Theater movies are no longer available. This will leave you shopping at that big auction site. You will find mostly stuff not worth owning. You will also find that some rare titles such a Bourne Identity and Alien are selling for prices that defy any sort of logic. Look at what you can purchase these on DVD for and multiply by 10 or 20 and you will get the idea. You would really have to be insanely obsessed with seeing these pics in HD to purchase them at that price. Of course, with BlueRay or other HD DVD right around the corner, those tapes will soon be worth less than a buck on the same auction site.
JVC HMDT100 DVHS - Timer Problems.......2004-12-10
JVC HMDT100
Received a JVC HM-DT100 unit November 2004 and all seems to be in good working order, at this time, except the recording program/event timer.
The timer does not function properly in regards to weekly program event (repeat) timing/recording. I am continuing to evaluate.
I have performed several power resets and carefully read the manual several times. Any leads to solving this problem OR a JVC contact (toll free number if you have it) that is not a droid would be helpful. If JVC does a recall, I would appreciate any information related.
The quality of HS HDTV recording is very close to HDTV quality. The playback is almost 1:1 to the original.
I am reluctant to obtain another unit until this timer problem is resolved.
If you get one of these units, read the manual carefully and take your time learning and setting up the machine. It is somewhat complicated. This aint your "grocery store special" VCR. If you get scrambled garbage or a locked up image, do a disconnect from power for 5 seconds and then reconnect to AC power. I have had to do it about six times so far to resolve lock ups and problems with the timer and tape speed settings.
If other users have suggestions or known solutions to problems with this machine please leave that information here in a review.

Buggy Card...HORRIBLE Software.......2007-10-30
I'm an experienced PC builder. I build all my family's computers as a hobby. I've successfully installed some tough (compatibility wise) hardware & software in my time. This ATI TV Wonder card was a worst case scenario by far. The card worked to different degrees with different "trial" software (Intervideo, BeyondTV, SageTV, etc). The card did not function completely and/or correctly with any software, especially the ATI Cataylst Software. The ATI Cataylst Software is a total disaster when paired with this TV Wonder card. (I used to have an ATI AIW Pro 9600 video card that worked OK with the Catalyst Software...don't know what's happened at ATI.) I called ATI after 3 days of frustration and their Tech told me to return the card to Amazon. I started the RMA process immediately. This card is not for the fainthearted or inexperienced PC user. (For comparison, I also have a Hauppauge WinTV card that performed, and continues to perform, flawlessly, on my PC.

I installed this card and software on a machine with a fresh install of WinXP (Pentium 4 3GHz, 2GB of RAM). The Catalyst software is sluggish, has a horrible interface, and randomly crashes. The playback in unwatchable--this card stalls and stutters at random. It's terrible for sports. Keep in mind that I am not using an antenna--this is straight from a ground cable from Comcast! Do not waste your money on this card.

After purchasing this product I found that the installed software doesn't work with Vista. After calling ATI, they told me a newer version would be out later this year. I found that HDTV shows didn't play or record well with Windows Media Center, but worked great with other programs that I'm using a trial for a trial basis.
I ended up getting the free ATI remote and that works very nice. Looking back I'm not sure if the hassle I've faced with this card thus far is worth it or not. I'd suggest everyone wait for the next gen cards to come out, because they'll probably work much better and with much less hassle. Maybe when ATI releases a new version of Catalyst Media Center many of the problems will be fixed, but for now we'll have to wait for that light at the end of the tunnel.

OK if you never used TIVO.......2007-12-12
The unit is ok if you never have had a Tivo DVR. If like me you can't live without Tivo then you have to scour ebay for used Directv tivos. Why Directv broke up with Tivo I will never understand. When I wanted to add another DVR to my existing Tivo I let myself be talked into a R15 by a tech who had both and told me the r15 was better. I had it for 2 days and hated it. The most important button for me is the pause button. On Tivo its the 2nd biggest button on the remote, is dead center, and is the only yellow one as well. On the R15 its a tiny button to the left of middle. I returned it and asked for a refurbished Tivo. Two days later a new r15 arrived FedEx. I asked again for a refurb tivo and two days later another r15 came. This happened 4 times before they admitted to me that they can request a Refurb tivo but if the warehouse doesn't have one they send the r15. I went on ebay and bought a used tivo.
I have no idea why Directv tried to reinvent the wheel but I hear the new heads of Directv are looking to rekindle their relationship. One could only hope. I now have 4 receivers in the house. My kids both have the r15 for the last year without any problems.
Bottom line if you never had a Tivo you will probably like the r15. If you have used Tivo you probably will be using ebay.
A Lot of Hot Air!.......2007-11-25
We recently got DirecTV after seeing their ad blitz for 75 HD channels. They brag about their "digital picture and sound," and their great customer service.
The truth is the only way to get digital picture and sound is with a HDTV and an HDMI. Their picture is actually worse than the picture we got with Comcast. Not to mention there is no two year agreement with cable, no picture loss when it rains, you do not have to pay for "leased equipment, and you do not need an ugly dish hanging on your house.
When we purchased our most recent HDTV, we figured we would replace the DVR we had with DirecTV and get an HD DVR to replace it.
DirecTV told us we would have to pay $299 for the privlige of leasing their receiver from them. In addition to this we would have to pay $50 because we were a new customer "and had not established a credit history with them." Also, we would have to pay $20 for shipping and handling and extend our contract for another two years.
Maybe DirecTV thinks it is in the cellphone business because all they want to do is lock you into long-term contracts and make you bleed money to them forever. The
