Customer Reviews:
For the simple traveler.......2007-12-28
I am a simple traveler so this is PERFECT for me. I get lost very very easily. This nuvi does the trick. Of course, it doesn't have new roads preloaded, but it gets me where I need to go. I love the voice directions. This is great for someone who needs an inexpensive gps.
Garmin Quality = Highly Recommended.......2007-12-27
A great no frills portable GPS! Garmin's base model combines inovation and simplicity.
It's like having a phone book and a map of the United States right at your fingertips!
With a price of $170, it's hard to beat. If I was going to buy another one I would shell out the extra $50 for the 4.3" screen, it's a lot easier to see.
If you're looking for a simple navigation system that anyone (even grandma and grandpa) can use.....trust Garmin!
Excellent, for the price!.......2007-12-27
A great GPS for the price. Bought two of these for less than other models. Does the job and can clearly hear the directions. The visual is as clear and easy to use, right out of the box.
More than shortest route required.......2007-12-26
I have one thing to add to the other reviews on the Garmin 200. Despite generally competent performance it tends to be VERY STUPID in picking certain routes. Apparently it goes for the shortest route without giving any weight or consideration to the nature of the roads themselves. Thus, going from Blacksburg, VA, to Roanoke, VA, it selects a narrow torturous
state road, which one drives at one's peril, especially at night, instead
of the fast, safe and efficient US 460 - Interstate 81 route which any informed person would take. I have been reluctant to put it on my wife's
vehicle for this reason.

Buyer beware!.......2007-12-25
I just received this product today. I ordered it in new condition but I believe it was used. The product came from the amazon returns center and when I opened the box, none of the pieces were wrapped in plastic. The main unit itself is a little scratched. I will probably return this...buyer beware.

Great camera.......2007-12-26
Just wanted to say that this camera has it all. It works out in any situation. If you are looking into purchasing this camera, well worth the money.
Great Camera!.......2007-12-26
This camera was the talk of our Christmas parties this year, as it is just so easy to use. The large display allowed even our old eyes to see if we needed to retake those important shots. This is a must-have camera for point & shoot folks like us!
Canon SD870IS.......2007-12-26
Crisp clear pictures, faithful colors. A big improvement over my old Canon S110. I miss the optical viewfinder.
Need Help & Suggestions w/ Canon SD870is.......2007-12-26
I've used this camera for 2 weeks now. It looked really nice, but I am having some troubles with it. When taking pictures at night outdoor (or even indoor with low lights), there are couple of vertical lines appeared on the LCD screen. Is it normal? Do I have a defective camera? Please help!
Crisp and Clear pictures!.......2007-12-26
I've had 3 canon cameras now.
My SD450 which my girlfriend has takes great pictures as well, but it's night and day when you get your hands on this beauty.
First off, that 3 in. LCD screen is just incredible. You can see everything in great detail with it's screen size.
And the pictures are sweet as well.
You have like 12 different preset scene modes for night, beach, foliage, pets & kids, etc. etc... you can't blow the picture for the life of you.
I'm still learning everything, but it's easy to navigate with the scroll wheel, like on an mp3 player....
Look, Buy it and you won't regret ever reading this review.....
I only buy canon digital cameras, because their simply the best looking and best software package , and of course the images are stunningly clear!
Cheerio!!!

Customer Reviews:
Faster flash photos than Nikon D40X.......2007-12-27
If you are looking for a camera to take a lot of indoor photos with flash (of your young children like we do), the Canon is much faster with flash photos than the Nikon. My mother-in-law has the older, 7 megapixel Canon, which takes awesome photos. We went to the store to get the newer Canon, but ended up taking home the Nikon since we were told the menus were easier, the glass of the standard lenses was better, and it came with more free stuff. We compared it to mother-in-law's camera over the holiday, and the Canon was much faster. We have since exchange our Nikon for the Canon XTI, and see a huge difference in the speed you can take flash photos. Luckily, we did this in time for the photos of Santa's gifts on Christmas morning. :)
Excellent camera, especially for the price.......2007-12-27
The Rebel XTi is Canon's prosumer/semi-pro DSLR, but it takes absolutely fantastic photos. Your investment in lenses is protected because you can mount any of the EF or EF-S series lenses on the XTi. If you decide to upgrade to another Canon model then your lens collection can go with you.
The Rebel is very pleasant to hold (I have large hands); it feels sturdy and well built. It weighs very little; hand-holding is very easy and comfortable.
Boasting a plethora of configuration options including a mirror-up mode for macro shots, the Rebel produces extremely noise-free images all the way through ISO400. ISO800 is entirely usable, but exhibits some noise. Image quality is excellent; the large resolution means that you can crop your photos and still get 8x10 prints.
Like all DSLRs, the XTi allows you to work directly with RAW files. If you prefer, you can shoot in JPEG+RAW or just JPEG. RAW files are about 10MB, so make sure to get a large memory card. I can fit about 760 RAW shots on an 8GB card. The camera makes intelligent decisions in its automatic or semi-automatic modes. That said, my best shots have all been in aperture priority or full automatic mode.
As a first foray into DSLR photography, this is an excellent buy. Don't get it just for megapixels or to say you have a DSLR. I used a Canon S3 IS for years with excellent results. By no means do you need a DSLR to get high-quality images or flexibility. Better image processing and interchangeable lenses are what set DSLRs apart from even prosumer point and shoots. Speaking of lenses, I don't recommend the kit lens; instead you might look into the 28-105mm lens or the 17-55mm IS lens - both from Canon.
Worth the price.......2007-12-26
This is my first DSLR camera. I bought this to learn photography. I would say that this camera is worth for the price. I would suggest to buy just the camera body and go for a better lens. This camera has decent enough features for a DSLR. This does not have the live preview option though.
Best DSLR Camera.......2007-12-23
I am more than 100% satisified with this camera. I knew about the features well before I purchased, so no regrets. I would refer and prefer this camera to all those SLR lovers.
Great value and still so versatile!.......2007-12-23
Canon has thought out this camera well and put a good
collection of useful features from its higher end DSLRs in this
model. Consequently, this camera has all the features that would keep
a budding photographer fulfilled for quite some time. In addition, the
great price allows you to spend more on good quality lenses, bounce
flash, and other accessories.
The useful features:
- Excellent picture taking: low noise sensor, ISO 1600 is quite usable. Fast
startup: camera is ready to shoot almost instantly at the press of
the shutter. Fast drive: 3 frames per second. With an Extreme III CF
card, one can shoot 27 shots before the camera becomes busy.
- Great user interface: One key access to white balance, ISO,
auto-focus modes, metering, drive, and AF points. These are all so nicely
laid out in the back of the camera. The grip is fine but could be a
bit more rounded. Light and compact.
- Ability to separate focus and exposure buttons with CF4 custom
function. This feature is poorly explained in the manual, but when
used with AI Servo AF, it makes the camera do less work and helps
you take great pictures. I also use custom white balance a lot. RGB
histogram, overblown pixel highlights, mirror lockup to prevent
camera shake are other useful functions.
The body is one quarter or even one-fifth of the picture taking
apparatus. The second quarter is a good lens (spend as much on a lens
as you will on the body), and half is your own dedication and skills
in photography. Invest in a bounce flash like speedlite 430ex or you
will be stuck taking pictures at home at ISO 1600. Buy some
photography books like Understanding Exposure.
Happy picture taking with this excellent body!
Customer Reviews:
Problem with the power switch .......2007-12-27
Got this camera kit from Amazon after reading reviews from a whole bunch of places about this camera. However the power switch was faulty. To switch on the camera I had to open and close the battery compartment every time while keeping the switch in ON position. The switch never worked. So sent it back. The return process was easy though, and I got my money back withing a week.
Now I have ordered a Pentax K10D. Hope it will work fine.
Flash problems with D40s and D40xs.......2007-12-26
I bought the Nikon D40 10 days ago and the flash stopped working. I did some research on the internet, and apparently it is not an uncommon problem. I would have really liked the camera otherwise. I will return this camera.
Superb! Perfect for a SLR beginner!! .......2007-12-26
For many of you point-and-shoot users who would be looking at D40 reviews right now in search of "good but not so complicated" SLR just like I was a month ago, I have one thing to say: THIS IS IT. Perfect for SLR beginners just like me. Regarding the kit lens, for a person like me- who will never go into the pro world but perfectly be happy with a camera that I can play with- it just does its job so well. I just like taking pictures of my family and making visual records of my daily life, and the kit lens is perfect for it. I'm pretty sure some people upgrade their lenses accordingly after buying this one, and really, unless you're all going for professional and dying to take really good scenery pictures and etc, i'm more than happy with what I have. The size is also perfect. It's just a perfectly portable size and I don't have a problem carrying it around with me all the time. No, it will not fit in your purses. Yes, it's so easy and light-weight to carry around considering it's SLR. The battery life is quite pleasing to me as well.
Okay, to be short: If you've been using point-and-shoot and now looking for a transitioning amateur SLR camera, D40's what you've been looking for!!
Everything I expected.......2007-12-24
Wanting to move up from a point and click camera to a DSLR, I researched the information on the internet about Canon, Sony, Nikon and Olympus cameras. I wanted a camera that takes good quality pictures in low light situations. My Olympus D560 and Nikon Coolpix 200 both take decent outdoor, normal light conditions, but not in low light conditions. Many reviews were helpful and it came down to a decision between Canon and Nikon. The D40 felt better in my hands from the standpoint of weight and ergonomic layout of buttons. The D40 has excellent refresh rate when the built-in flash is used, which is horrible on the point and click cameras. I am still learning how to use all of the manual and P-S-A modes but the tests I have done so far give excellent picture quality results. The low light test pictures have been great in auto and manual settings. I need to get a tripod to achieve better long-exposure pictures to get the quality of pictures others have posted in reviews. I would recommend the D40 for people wanting to enter the DSLR world. The best advise and information came from Ken Rockwell's site: http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm
His site also lead me to Amazon for the best price when I decided to buy. Thanks Ken, Amazon and Nikon.
Second purchase of this product.......2007-12-24
I bought the Nikon D-40 for one of my daughters last year to make periodic digital pictures of my latest grandson. These could then be emailed to us for printing or achiving. The pictures have been excellent, and my daughter has been complimented many times from others that have seen them. She has compared her pictures to some made by a professional photographer, and she believes some of her pictures are superior. My wife uses a D-50 which also delivers fantastic pictures. Even the lower resolution of these cameras does not detract from the images produced. The real beauty of the D-40 is that it can be a simple camera to use or provide the features a more experienced camera buff might desire. I have now bought a second D-40 for my other daughter. This should illustrate my satisfaction with the camera.

Customer Reviews:
Super Camera with 10x Optical Zoom.......2007-12-27
Took this camera with me for the first time on to a trip to Peru. The Leica 10x optical zoom lens allowed for superb wide-angle (28mm) landscape photos of Machu Picchu, terrific portraits at mid-range (100mm) zoom, and nice telephoto (280mm) candids of people and animals. Its ease of use was evident by never having to open the user's manual. Unlike ultrazoom cameras from other manufacturers such as Sony and Olympus, this Lumix is actually pocketable though I prefer to keep it in the optional soft leather case. Resolution is quite good except without flash in low lighting.
nice camera.......2007-12-26
I bought it in a satisfied price, and the camera is in good condition. I'm not a professional in photography, but the clear CCD and wide-angle make it cool.
Pansonic TZ3 camera.......2007-12-26
Product was as shown and was delivered as promised. Good price quick delivery. Would buy again.
Wow, what a camera...........2007-12-25
This camera has so many things going for it. More modes than you can shake a stick at. The price on Amazon when I purchased it was at least $40 than everywhere else. The thing takes great quality pictures and video. The view screen is top quality and huge. It's got awesome zoom. It feels solid in your hands as well. My previous camera was a Sony Cybershot. Problems cropped up with that camera within a year. This camera is a rock. You can tell they designed this camera with regular people taking pictures on vacation, or of kids and stuff like that. You can't go wrong with this product if you want a compact point and shoot camera.
Great camera for the money........2007-12-24
This is a great little camera for someone like me who likes to just shoot and point, and for my husband who like to get a little more technical and use all the settings this camera offers. Pictures are great, easy to use - screen is big and easy to view. Would recommend for everyday picture takers.

But it's not just the broad geographical coverage that makes the TomTom ONE XL-S special. The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 4.3 inches, the TFT display offers an expanded widescreen view of brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics.
The device also features 32 MB RAM and 266 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest. Memory expansion is made possible by an SD card slot.
The ONE XL-S provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are issued at a speed-sensitive volume, so as your vehicle's engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening. And because voice instructions are available in over 30 languages, just about anyone will find the TomTom ONE XL-S to be an invaluable system.
With its touch-sensitive screen, the TomTom ONE XL-S puts programming and operation literally at your fingertips to make sophisticated technology simple. The built-in database offers thousands of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. The ONE XL-S will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the ONE XL-S lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. Other display features include a compass mode to assist you with directional orientation, and an anti-glare screen for optimal viewing even in direct sunlight.
The 4.3-inch (diagonal) 3D driving view offers a clear picture of the road and maneuvers ahead (actual size). |
For additional navigational features to assist with trip planning, the built-in Bluetooth connection provides access to TomTom PLUS subscription-based services, so that you can tune in to the latest traffic and weather conditions, as well as download additional city maps, voices, points of interest, and much more. The ONE XL-S adds to these capabilities with FM radio-based RDS-TMC traffic information as an available accessory (not included).
Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 3.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches, the TomTom ONE XL-S can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom ONE XL-S is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle's cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.

great product.......2007-12-28
Have been using this gps for only a month, but worked right out of the box. Easy to use. Definately like the voice diections. Even if you still make a wrong turn, it racalculates right away to get you back on the right track.
Returned it........2007-12-27
I got this as a Christmas Gift. I returned this item. I am a Mac user and found the Mac software was poorly designed and trailing far behind the windows software in features. The Mac software crashed 3 times. I borrowed a friends windows laptop and was finally able to get to the free map software update feature. It was not updated because the unit already had current maps (I question this -- there is a thirty day limit on free maps -- what are the chances a new map will be available 30 days after Christmas?). A lot of work to find that out! However, the software updated some features of the unit and the voice part completely stopped working. Restored from backup and it was fixed. Reapplied updates and the voice broke again. Restored from backup again. Unit came with nearly full memory - might be related to problem. This is a UK manufactured item. All items for cost (such as maps etc) are in british pounds. I'm sure that the brits might be used to looking at prices in US dollars ( don't know), but be assured that the reverse is in no way true. TomTom has come on strong in the US market, but I think these guys are not serious enough about this market, and they are having a bit of a problem with SW quality control. I predict they will loose the US market because of a lack of attention to detail. Maps in my area (southern california) are out of date. Tried to route me over a 50 ft deep drainage ditch where there is no street, never has been. Next I will try the Garmin Nuvi 650 at the same price. I'll let you know.
Tom Tom XLS.......2007-12-27
First of all, I received the Tom Tom XL within a very short time after it had been ordered.
The XLS is a fine GPS with most of the features needed. I particularly like the way it zooms in when the vehicle slows down or approaching the next programed turn. Speach to text works well with only some mispronunciations with strange street names!
It is easy to used and very intuitive.
I would really like a paper manual to be included with the purchase. It is easier for me to take my time reading it and highlighting the features for subsequent reference. You nearly need a ream of paper to print out the on-line manual !!
A feature I would like is to have the ability for the GPS to provide current altitude. Any GPS is capable of doing this. Why is it not available on the Tom Tom XLS?
When are more computer voices going to be available?
I would also like the unit to have a longer battery life than the 2 hours. Apart from my own personal wishes, the GPS works well, is accurate and locks on to the satellites quickly.
TomTom XL-S A Step Up with Text to Speech.......2007-12-26
Looking for a GPS with Text to Speech, the TomTom One XL-S is great. I have a TomTom 520 Go also, and I realy like the Unit telling me the street names instead of just turn ahead. Graphics on the 520 are a little better, as it knows when I turn into a parking lot, the ONE XL-S shows me in a grass field (sometimes it places me back on the street). All in all this is a real great unit for the price. Size is great, you can slip it into a pocket. There is a lot of different aftermarket mounts for the ONE XL.
Excellent GPS with great features .......2007-12-26
I got the TomTom XL-S during Thanksgiving. This is my first GPS device purchase and I am very happy with its features and performance. It contains some neat and useful features. Text-to-speech is accurate and possibly the best feature in this product. I dont look at screen now while driving , I just listen to the directions from Tom Tom, which are correct, clear and announced well ahead of time. The extralarge screen on Tomtom XL-S makes it an additional plus as it is easy to view.
All in all TomTom XL-S is really an excellent choice. You will not be dissapointed. I have used Garmin and Magellans before and both are not as intuitive and user-friendly.

Customer Reviews:
A great DSLR for the price.......2007-12-24
I purchased one of these about a month ago along with a 55-200mm second lens. I started my photography hobby "back in the day" of developing my own film, doing my own color and B&W prints, etc. and loved my old film-based Nikon and RIcoh cameras. But as my life got busier with family etc I let that hobby go. But with the advent of digital cameras with good quality and good apps for computer editing I got back into. At first with the lower end cameras like a Canon G2 and Powershot models. They were convenient but photo quality wasn't that good and they struggled with many tougher situations. Plus my hold SLR hobbiest self objected to the lack of creative control. With the newer DSLRs that are available around $600 I took another look and felt the features and quality were ready for purchase decision. After comparing with the XTi from Canon I selected the Nikon because I found it's features easier to use and comprehensive. And most important the quality of the images is superior to the Canon. Canon's consumer lenses just aren't very good (at least not compared to Nikon). While I see some people are dinging this camera for sports I've had good luck using it for action shots. Unless you are considering buying a lens above 300mm I don't think the lack of in-body AF is going to be much of a real concern. Now, on to the best feature. In my tests the Nikon absolutely smokes in the Canon in start up time. With the Nikon, you can take a picture IMMEDIATELY after turning the D40x on. This is a huge feature for me and one of the reasons I wanted a DSLR. Also, the multishot mode works very well in capturing action. I'm really happy with this camera for the price!
Terrific camera.......2007-12-24
I don't usually write reviews but this camera is terrific. Easy to use for a non-professional, great pictures, long battery life between charges, and no noticeable lag time between shots.
excellent.......2007-12-23
This is absolutely an excellent camera. It is fast and the flash recharges rapidly. The picture quality is excellent. The battery life is at least 400 pictures.
Great camera.......2007-12-22
The camera works great. There are a lot of functions that we still need to learn about, but for now the Auto function works fine.
Exciting Camera.......2007-12-21
I spent over 6 months looking at cameras and this is the best I found for the money.
