It provides a USB connection to your computer and allows you to connect one phone for your land-line and Skype phone. Falls short in not having VOIP circuitry built-in that allows you to make Skype calls with your computer off. Still, good value for the price and I will use it when I travel.
Zoom Skype Interface May Work But Zoom Wouldn't Show Me How!.......2007-09-29
I asked for a Zoom electronic interface to mate with the skype phone on my computer. It was supposed to allow me to make skype calls using an ordinary home phone plugged into the interface. I followed the directions that came with an included CD, to the letter. I was able to produce an alarm-like dial tone on the home phone. But there were no instructions that told me what to do next. I tried simply dialing a number but that produced no result. Zoom did not have an 800 number, but one you had to pay for. I dialed it twice with my skype phone, but could not use its tone-activated automatic menus, so had to use a snail phone to reach them. I was put on hold for long periods. Later, I was told to leave my phone number and I would be called later. I never received a call back, nor did was any recorded or live promise to call me back ever fulfilled. I reached a technical support person on one occasion. He somehow got it in his head that I was using dial-up to make phone calls. I was not. I have DSL. Then he told me that he didn't know how to make Zoom work with a Skype phone, but would put me in contact with someone in the technical shop who did know how. He either put me on hold for a long period after which no one ever picked up, or told me he would have someone call back. I was not called back ever by anyone at Zoom despite several promises. Two other attempts to talk to Zoom technicians, were met with mechanical voice instructions to leave a phone number and I would be called later at that number. I never received a callback from Zoom from leaving those instructions. I tried to google online instructions from users who had encountered zoom-skype phone interface problems and solved them. I found a lot of folks on forums who had problems, but I found NO solutions on any of those forums. The Zoom Skype phone interface is simply a product that is not even being honestly offered in the marketplace. In the end, I sent the product back to Amazon and received a full reimbursement.

OK for telephony - too distorted for music.......2007-12-23
The human voice has a limited audio frequency range ; music may range from 10 to 30000 Hertz. I had hoped this tiny USB device could do yeoman's work connecting to self-powered external speakers. Nope ~ guess again, dude. I have requested an RMA from the Amazon Seller; they have obliged. Next, from reading reviews on the big A, I am going with the Griffin iMic USB adapter. Even an audio pro gives it very high marks.
I never tried this adapter for telephone applications; I bet it will work just fine for the price. In fact, my seller's ad copy only talks about this particular use.
Like they say, you get what you pay for.
Worthless on a Mac.......2007-12-16
If you want extra audio for a Mac, don't buy this. The system recognizes it, but the volume control is useless and all you get is severely distorted sound regardless of settings.

I tried to use this as an easy way to plug in my headset though I still have speakers. My game is not clearly confused and will no use either the speakers or USB sound card. My sound works normally for other applications like iTunes, but my game is not able to resolve this problem.

Under Linux (Ubuntu 6.06) it produced audio with no configuration needed, but there was no functional volume control: the volume was either on full (volume level >= 8 out of 64), or completely off (volume level
< 8). At full volume it was far too loud for headphone use. Doing attenuation in software introduced distortion/noise.

Louder background static.......2007-12-27
I have been using this adapter for several months now. The installation was pretty easy. However, like the user who gave it two stars, I am experiencing background static. Unlike that user, however, this static is loud enough to drown-out the voices on calls. This makes the phone almost useless. The static cannot be heard on the other end of the conversation, just on mine.

This is a great product that is very easy to install. It took my a little while to figure out why I could not hear the phone ringing when I called someone. They also couldn't hear me. After checking the SkypeMate forum, I adjusted the settings under Control Panel >>> Sound and Audio Device Properties >>> Voice. You want the Voice Playback and Voice Recording options to be set to USB. Now it works great and I am no longer tied to my computer when making calls.

I had to return the d-link dph-50u because it didn't work for me. The installation of this adapter is very simple and quick. Although the software user interface appears to be cheaper than that of d-link but this adapter actually works! I've tried it on both windows XP and Vista. So far so good.
