Capture high res video AVI files.......2007-09-20
Pinnacle manufactured great high end video boards for professional capture, overlay and editing... then they went after the home hobbyist. That's why their products all suggest you capture your home vhs tapes and burn them to DVD. That's when their reputation went south. The software crashed systems and was hard to set-up.
It has not improved much but some users are able to download drivers and patches to make the editing\DVD software work fine, and report no problems. If you know how to do this, this product will work for you.
You'll notice from the other reviews that half the reviewers rate it high, the other half, low. Some low ratings are from Pinnacle problems but many are because the system itself has too little RAM, too many background programs or has not been defragged.
So why my 5 star rating? I capture from both analog (RCA TV type connectors) and firewire (camcorder DV) uncompressed AVI at 720 x 480 then edit it in Premiere. It's easy to do and results are great. The capture software controls most camcorders and previews footage. You can capture a TV program and make fun of it on UTube. Capture controls are easy to use and allow tweaking of input. Just make sure you go to the Pinnacle support knowledgebase site and download any recommended drivers, etc.

Pinnacle is notorious for crashing........2006-10-23
I've worked with various Pinnacle Studio versions since last decade, and they've all had two things in common:
1. When the program works, it's superb.
2. The other 50% of the time, it crashes frequently, and hard!
For years, Pinnacle had designed the market's top, novice-affordable video editing/authoring platforms, but for some frustrating reason, they just can't seem to keep the bugs out. This verson is no exception.
Lately, the competition in this market has mushroomed, and there are better alternatives available for the same price. At last, others have emulated the Pinnacle platform while eliminating the work/creativity-killing bugs.
My advice? Shop around. Google the competition. But save yourself the frustration and steer away from anything Pinnacle.
Resulting MPEGs work only with Pinnacle.......2006-08-16
The capturing from VHS worked fine. Pinnacle 9 creates MPEG files from your captures. However, the DVD creation options are -horrible-. After the captures were done, I had several MPEG files that Pinnacle had created. I sold Pinnacle (and uninstalled the software), and then bought a separate DVD authoring tool with which to create DVDs from Pinnacle's MPEG files. To my horror and then I discovered that no other tool can edit the MPEGs. Windows Media Player can -play- the MPEGs, but nothing can edit them. Not Windows Movie Maker, not Adobe Premiere Elements, not Sonic MyDVD, and not Muvee. So, I had to buy Pinnacle's software all over again, just so I could convert their (secretly encoded?) MPEGs into a format that other tools could understand: WMV.
The only part of this product that is solid is the capturing video.

Do not buy anything from Pinnacle. Their software deceptively leads you to believe that you need to purchase further programs to burn DVDs. I did so and got incorrect activation codes twice before requesting a refund which they have refused to give even though the product does not work and meets their advertised return policy. I have filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission for deceptive trade policies and knowingly offering defective products.

Comment on Fat 32 file system.......2005-12-17
One of your reviewers mentioned about the limitation of Windows 98 not allowing more than 17m55sec of video to be recorded at one time but that now with XP its ok. I think I would like to add that in my experence the problem really is that Windows 98 runs with Fat 32 file system and has the limit of capturing only 17m55sec of video whereas NTFS file system which was used on Windows ME and later doesnt have the same limitation problem. I recently purchased an Immoega? 250gig drive with a USB connection and this had been formatted with Fat32 so all I needed to do was bring up Disk manager in the Control Panel and convert it to NTFS and I was away with it capturing to it's max.

I Purchased this mainly to make home movies and cut a CD. The software that comes with this is very good. Compared to any movie making software this helps to make movie using time line, story board. The good piece was editing. The Editing of movie by dividing it into multiple pieces was good. the software also come with a provision to make the movie in VCD, SVCD and DVD formats. I recommend this for naive users like me to make quality movies/

This is by far the easiest-to-use, most intuitive, best bang-for-the-buck video editing package out there.
Some people will tell you that other programs have more features, more flexibility, render faster and are even more stable. These people are all CORRECT. However, that doesn't make those other packages better for the amateur. They should tell you that 100% of the features needed for the typical video project ARE included in Pinnacle Studio. They should tell you that Pinnacle Studio is so easy to use that you don't even need a manual, while those other programs have such archaic commands and buried menus they'll take months to figure out. They should tell you that professional video editors who have the more expensive programs often use Pinnacle Studio for all of their basic editing and then switch to the expensive ones only to do complicated special effects and rendering. Why? Because Pinnacle Studio is that much easier to use.
So why do some other packages cost hundreds more? Because they allow you to create your own complicated layered video and audio effects, edit on multiple monitors, and render finished video effects in real time, which can be 10 times faster than Studio. If you are a professional who always has 5 projects going and edits video all day every day, those things are worth the extra price.
A couple of notes:
The 18 minute limit that another reviewer refers to is an old WINDOWS file size limit, applicable to any video program. If you are running Windows XP, this limit no longer exists.
Finally, forget what the Apple commercials tell you. Video editing and rendering is not so simple that a kindergartner can do it. It's the most resource-intensive thing you can ask your PC to do. If you aren't comfortable enough with a PC to be able to close competing applications and monitor how much hard drive space you have available, then you should not try video editing, even with a simple program like Pinnacle Studio. If those things don't intimidate you, then take the plunge with this product. You'll have a blast.

Had no problems installing and then editing movies with trv-27. Also burning VCDs is quick. The software they ship helps you cut a home movie real fast. I would recommed this. I gave it 4 stars since I expected the software to have some more features.
Get a Mac Instead.......2002-09-15
Why waste your time trying to make your Windows PC do what it was never meant to do. I looked at this board and then decided to get a Mac instead. Since then, I haven't looked back. The Mac comes with the necessary consumer software to start making awesome video out of the box.
You can add sound, special effects, transitions, etc... There are even plug ins from third partys for additional effects. If you outgrow iMovie, you can always get Final Cut Pro.

These guys are right I've been working on a project for quite a while I tried to transfer it to AVI and I lost all of it.
It took so much time that I'm workin on a MPEG version.

Software crashs often using Windows XP. The worst piece of software I have ever purchased. Ended up with Sony Screenblast 3.0 which works great.

I bought the Studio 8 AV because of the excellent reviews (not on this site, but probably sites that are paid off by Pinnacle). The software itself is not that intuitive, and the manual is average at best. The software comes with a card you can install in your PC to download videos via 1394 protocol.
The main problem with this software is it crashes every 10 minutes. For a decent sized project, it will crash 10 or 20 times before you get finished.
Other than that, the MPEG encoding is good, delivering superior video results on your DVD.
I would avoid this software like the plague because Pinnacle obviously does not invest enough money into QUALITY, like making sure the software isn't as full of as many holes as a moth-eaten sweater. It even crashes when you click on the HELP tutorial.
Too bad... and the hype you read about this product is totally is amazing, in comparison to how bad this product is.
I'm thinking of launching a class action suit on behalf of all the users that got ripped off buying this product.

Initially I believed this worked reasonably well. That is if you put up with the capture freezing periodically. However, after owning it for two months (and therefore stuck with it), I find that it will capture off my DVD player perfectly, but it will not capture at all from my VCR. There simply is no video in the preview box and it does not capture. Pinnacle's "support" is poor. Forget speaking to a person. I am currently waiting to hear a response from email, however I suspect that it won't be helpful. If it was not for the expense I would simply throw it away. It is beginning to take up so much time. All for wanting to transfer tapes to DVD. I did end up buying a Panasonic DVD recorder with a hard drive for that purpose. It works well, the only draw back being the inability to edit beyond creating scences.( which is great to edit out commercials)
capture NIGHTMARE.......2003-07-26
Everytime my source video has a scene change the capture hardware hangs, producing a stuttering image of the last frame sucessfully captured. The MovieBox manual says that during video "dropouts" the MovieBox "will wait for an interference free signal" and that this "can take a few momements" to acquire the new signal. It suggests that the unit be reset or power cycled if it does not properly reacquire the signal after it has stabilized. Since this issue occurs at every scene change you will need to babysit your capture so you can reset your hardware and restart the capture each time you turned off your camcorder during the original recording. The included software is good, but the hardware is fatally flawed - and the manufacturer is trying to sell it anyhow!
PINNACLE S MOVIEBOX DV CAPTURE ( 210100250 ).......2003-06-29
I bought this product to copy old vhs movies and copy my analog camcorder hi 8mm tapes to mpe(dvd) format. Like the other review says, the hardware is a piece of junk and in my opinion should have never been allowed to be sold to the public. It still amazes me how companies get away with this and still stay in business. The software seem ok Pinnacle Studio 8. I have a Dell 8300 running xp pro with sp1 installed, 512 memmory and 200mb harddisk, ati 9800 video card, siig 1394 firewire card. I have a high end sony hi 8mm camcorder. The bottom line is that when you capture video and you have a scene transitions(ex. tape a scene of my kids one day and then next day I tape a nother scene - normal use), it HANGS up(the video goes crazy and it starts making all these popping sounds). My first scene was 5 minutes and then it hung up. I could never get it to capture more than 5 minutes. I tried for hours to make it work and I have 20 years experience as a computer developer. I then started researching this product and found no good reviews, they were all terrible. The moviebox usb is going to have the same problem because of the mpeg encoder chipset in the box, it just does not work. If you want a great production, then the anwser is the Canopus ADVC100(approx $250.00 street price). I bought it the other day and have burned 4 hours of old vhs and hi 8mm movies to the .avi format. You can buy other Canopus products that do mpeg hardware encoding with variable bitrate, but they are in the $500 range. If you want to edit movies, you should be capturing the video to .avi(need a lot of disk space), editing it, and then converting it to mpeg-2(dvd) fromat. Editing in MGEP format does not work well. The Canopus worked flawlessly with hunderds of scene transitions. I could not find one bad review on the Canopus product. It is plug and play. I have used Microsoft Movie Maker 2 and Pinnacle Studio 8 to capture the video. Hope this review was helpful.
This product is junk........2003-06-11
This product is junk and so is the bundled software! I purchased the Moviebox in order to convert old VHS, VHS-C and Video8 to DV. When I hooked it up to my Computer (Windows XP) I couldn't capture more than 5 minutes (max.) of footage before something went awry (video would hang on a single corrupted frame, audio would cut in and out and or reverberate very annoyingly). Pinnacle tech support gave a whole list of things to try which didn't help.
Next I attempted to use the box in standalone mode (not using a computer at all) going from a Canon Video8 camcorder through the Moviebox and out to a Sony VX1000 DV camcorder. I am able to capture but it requires constant (and I mean constant) "baby sitting" because it hiccups on average about every 10 minutes. There is no way to just set it up and leave it run while you go about other business.
Bottom line is don't waste your time or money on this product! I'm returning mine right away.

A great companion to my new Sony TRV340 camcorder.......2002-08-31
As a computer professional, but first time PC/digital video user, I rate this product highly for several reasons.
The over 1/2" instruction manual is well written. The short automated tutorial is very good too. The video capture card (IEEE, i-LINK, whatever you want to call it) has 1 internal and 2 external ports which is handy. The cable is actually long enough to use. It configured easily in Windows XP Home.
The software detects every thing with ease and has a cool feature when connected to my new SONY TRV340 (see my review for it) that allows control of the camera from the screen.
I have captured Digital-8 video and video converted from my VHS tapes via my SONY into the PC and easily edited the video into some very nice home movies. Some of the special effects are very slick.
I have had no problems as mentioned by others in inserting from multiple captured videos. I have made up to hour long movies so far. It has more formats to output to than you would ever need and I haven't had one single failure (capturing, editing, or writing) yet. I must say it delivers everything it promises and is suprisingly user friendly.
