Amazon.com Product Description
Your home computers are networked wirelessly, but with all the digital photos, video and music your family has been collecting, they're all running out of hard drive space. And what's more, you and your kids each need access to a printer. With the Belkin Network USB Hub, you can give each computer on your network direct wireless access to up to 15 devices, including an external hard drive to store your family's digital media and a printer that everyone on your network can share. With this convenient, easy-to-install device, the days of purchasing separate printers and peripherals for each of your computers is over.
Share up toFifteen Devices Wirelessly
The Belkin Network USB Hub allows you to give every computer connected to your network access to up to 15 USB devices. (The Hub itself will connect directly to five devices, but it also lets you "daisy chain" three additional USB hubs to it, so that you can connect a total of 15 USB devices to your network computers.) While the Hub is specifically designed for printers and mass-storage devices, it also works for most other USB devices, including most standard webcams, keyboards and mice, multifunction machines, scanners, and media readers.
Enjoy simple setup and operation right out of the box. View larger. |
Included software manages all the devices attached to the Hub. View larger. |
- Sharing up to 15 USB devices wirelessly, including printers, digital cameras and scanners
- Backing up and accessing data from a shared external storage device
- Playing music from an MP3 player connected to a USB dock (using USB speakers)
|
The perfect solution for connecting to your USB devices and drives from a wireless laptop. Note: The Hub requires a a wireless router, which must be purchased separately. View larger. |
You can even dock an MP3 player and play music through your USB speakers wirelessly. If your device has a USB connection, chances are that everyone on your network can access it wirelessly. (Some high-speed devices, such as high-definition webcams and video docking stations, may not be compatible with the Network USB Hub.)
Once the Hub is set up, you simply plug your USB devices into one of its five USB ports, and the Hub seamlessly installs software that makes USB printers and other devices appear to be connected to your network computers. The convenience of this direct USB-connection emulation requires that only one user be linked to each device at a time. So if your daughter is editing video on the external hard drive, the software lets you contact her to request that she disconnects from the drive so you can access it. With printers, the Hub automatically disconnects users after completing a print job, so that other users on your network can print.
Quick and Easy Set Up
Even if you don't have an external hard drive or other peripherals you want your computers to access, the Belkin USB Hub is one of the best ways you can share a printer on your network. It not only effectively functions as the industry's first reliable print server, it's also one of the easiest to install. Set-up takes less than three minutes with the included CD. Simply insert the set-up disk, and in five easy steps you'll be ready to go. If you have the Windows firewall activated on your PC, the Hub will automatically detect it and ask you if you wish to allow it to work from behind the firewall. (Users of other firewalls must manually add the device driver to their list of allowed programs.)
While the Belkin USB Hub works best with the Belkin N1 Wireless Router (a router is not included with the Hub), it will work seamlessly with any existing wireless router. The distance and quality of the connection of your computers to your USB devices will depend on the quality of your router and your Internet connection. And aside from having a wireless network and USB devices you want to connect to, the only requirement is that your computers are running Window XP or Vista.
NOTE: The Belkin USB Hub connects directly to your existing wireless router. The Hub does not have routing capabilities, and does not include a router. You must purchase the router separately.

JUNK (especially for Mac users).......2007-12-20
This is just a terrible product. The hardware seems okay, but the software required to operate it is just terrible. You can only connect to a device if no one else is using it. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of wireless networking? Thanks, but I'll save myself $100 and just walk over to the dang thing and unplug it for that.
Also, the speeds are so slow. I mean REALLY slow. Using a brand new blazing fast Vista machine, my transfer took under two hours with the devices connected directly to it. I then did the same thing except going through this Belkin Wireless Hub - TWENTY FOUR HOURS!! Just awful.
Now, Belkin claims that it supports the Mac, so I bought it. It doesn't support the Mac. At all. The drivers on the Mac crash both my Mac Book Pro and my wife's Mac Book EVERY SINGLE TIME we use it.
However, I did give Belkin one star because this is a great idea. So 1 out of 5 for the theory. I'm just not paying $100 for this worthless trash in practice. Mine is getting returned tomorrow. There are plenty of other companies that want my business that actually support their products.
look ma, no wires!!!.......2007-12-18
Great device. Easy set-up. The system integrates with your wireless network seemlessly with the included software. One sore spot is setting up your firewall to accept this new device. The Belkin website offers solution for many of the most popular 3rd party firewall programs. If you turn off your firewall during set-up and then turn it on after setup is complete this seems to resolve this issue.
It is so cool to move my laptop accross the room and still be able to control my usb speakers & printer.
Works perfectly for me, very cool little device.......2007-12-13
When I got a new laptop, I decided I was sick of dragging cords around with it so I decided to make my house wireless. I wasn't sure what was out there as far as wireless USB hubs... I found one that operated without a wireless internet router, but it was more expensive. When I came across this, I decided I'd give it a try.
Setup wasn't too bad. I don't even think I followed the directions right but it works perfectly anyway. There's plenty of documentation for different setups.
I run my printer, external hard drive and wireless mouse/keyboard receiver through it (obviously for the last one, the receiver has to be within range of you, as usual). The router I'm using is a little Belkin g-band unit. When you connect to the wireless on your computer, it will automatically detect this and start connecting your devices, which takes a few seconds.
It's a nice design--small, but with enough weight to stay put, flat so you can put something on top of it.
Overall, I'm quite happy with it and I'd definitely recommend looking at this first if you're trying to find a wireless solution for your USB devices.
Belkin Network USB Hub.......2007-12-02
Received the item in the mail on Friday. Started right away to get it up and running. Got to where it would see both my webcam and printer on all pcs but wouldnt let me do anything with the printer. It is an HP V40. So i went to the Belkin website and updated the firmware and the application software for this unit and after that it was an easy setup for each pc. I really like this item and got a deal for 89 dollars after rebate.
Excellent product for what it does.......2007-11-13
I would have rated this product five stars or even ten if I could but for the absence of a single sentence in the quick start guide. To begin, I purchased this item over a month ago and had no luck installing it. It connected to the server but that was it. I could not see the devices I connected to the hub on the network. I tried a number of configurations but nothing worked. I gave up after a few hours and uninstalled everything and put the hub away chalking up the failure to my own incompetence. I did not try tech support because and this was confirmed by my review of the comments here I knew it would be a waste of time. A few weeks later I tried again with similar results. So I put everything away on the pile of my other hardware failures never to be resurrected. Yesterday I ran across a listing posted by C-Net of 15 outstanding products and the hub was one of them. So I thought I should try it again since CNet thought so highly of the product. No luck, same results-no connection to the other computers on the network. This time I decided to look at the CNet review to find out why they liked the product so much. In approximately the third paragraph I read the following and this is a paraphrase 'the software must be installed on each computer that wishes to have access to the hub.' I stopped and read it again in disbelief. Now I do not claim to be a expert in computerspeak but I do believe I can read an English sentence with some comprehension so I can say that that information was nowhere in the quick start guide. It does say install the software but I figured it meant install it on the computer to which the hub is connected. Well, long story short, I did what the review said to do and VOILA everything worked. I had connected two hard drives and a printer to the hub and the hub transfered each of them to the other computer where I installed the software. I was pleased. There are still deficiencies such as the asking permission to transfer ownership of the device which could be a major issue in an office environment but for me it is merely a matter of getting up and walking over to the main computer and clicking the yes button. The printer was already set up as a network printer but I connected it to the hub anyway. That did require the installation of a printer driver on the satellite machine which for me was a minor inconvenience. Also the hub has five ports but the spacing is not the best. If you have standard USB connectors, five should fit but if you have flash drives with USB connectors you may lose a port or two because of the width of the flash drive. This also may be minor but I should point it out. I also cannot attest to the reliablity of the device since I have only used it for one day. I can say that I attached a flash drive to one of the ports this morning and it connected immediately.
Perhaps the software installation instructions are placed somewhere in the manual which I did not read but I did read the quick start guide and I looked at the online help section to no avail. Maybe I missed it and I will hold out that possiblility but it's good to know that the device does work as advertised.

Customer Reviews:
Does the job better than most.......2007-10-14
I bought this unit after an unfortunate experience with the Sima VS502 A/V switch. It's been a happy change.
The AR5000 A/V switch has five inputs. Four are located on the back panel, the fifth is on the front panel. There is one set of Audio/Video outputs on the back panel.
All five inputs have a connector for S-Video. Three inputs (1, 2, and 3) also accept component (RGB) video. Two inputs (4 and 5) accept composite video via the yellow RCA-type phono plug.
There is no accommodation for RF video input.
Inputs 1, 2, and 3 accept audio input via digital coax and digital fiber optic connectors. Inputs 4 and 5 accept audio only via stereo L/R (White/Red) phono inputs.
The output connectors consist of one set of RGB component video connectors, one S-Video connector, and one RCA-type composite video connector.
Video Handling:
The AR5000 automatically upconverts composite video and S-Video to component video.
That is, if S-Video is presented to any of the five inputs, there will be an upconverted video signal available at the component output connectors.
And composite input presented at inputs 4 or 5 will also be available at the component output connectors.
For convenience, composite video presented at inputs 4 or 5 will be available at the S-Video output connector.
If upconversion isn't required, the video output connectors will always reflect the type of video input presented.
So composite video connected at inputs 4 or 5 will be available on outputs as composite video, and S-Video presented to any input will always be available at the S-Video output connector.
There is no down-convert from video component input to S-video or composite video. So component video signals at inputs 1, 2, or 3 will only be available at the component output connectors.
My major requirement for an A/V switch was to be able to present inputs in a mixture of both component and S-Video.
I wanted to have just one type of video connection to my monitor -- component video. So I needed to have the switch upconvert S-Video to component.
The quality of the upconvert from S-Video to component is quite good. At least, I was not able to see any noticeable difference between an S-Video input connected directly to my monitor, and the same S-video input connected through the switch and output in component video to the same monitor.
I wasn't expecting any video improvement, just wanted to make sure there were no artifacts introduced in the upconvert. There did not appear to be any.
This is the area where the SIMA unit failed miserably, and the reason I had to return it.
The upconvert quality is such that I would not consider using a separate upconvert device costing more than the price of this switch alone.
Audio Handling:
The AR5000 switch will automatically upconvert stereo L/R audio inputs. (Those audio inputs are only available on inputs 4 and 5). The AR5000 will make the audio available to both the digital coax and digital fiber optic outputs on the output side.
Obviously, this L/R audio is also passed through and available at the audio L/R output connectors.
There are not many A/R switch units that will also do audio upconvert, and this is a really nice feature.
Strangely, however, the unit does not cross-convert digital coax audio to digital fiber optic audio.
It's strange because this is one final feature that would allow the switch to be able to present video and audio to an external device as one type of video input and one type of audio input.
So, if you have mix of devices that can only output audio in digital coax or digital fiber optic, then you'd have to have those two types of audio output connected to your external device, e.g. a receiver.
Your alternative is to use an external audio coax-to-fiber optic or fiber optic-to-coax cross-converter.
In these days of easily programmable universal remotes this isn't such a big deal, but it would have been nice if AR had just gone the extra yard and made a digital coax audio input also available on fiber optic audio output, and vice versa. Then it truly would deserve the title of an A/V switch. The SIAM VS502 did offer this feature -- but unfortunately that was just about the only feature I liked that worked.
Cosmetics:
The unit is well built, fairly compact, and looks smart in its silver case. There is decent switch "feel", and the A/V connectors appear to be fairly solid.
The switch does require power, delivered via a regular power cord.
And the unit does generate a little heat, and that is dissipated through a grill on the top of the unit. So obviously you should not put anything on top to block that air flow.
Switching Inputs:
You can switch inputs manually or via remote control, but there is no remote control provided with the unit.
Instead, the unit allows you to use any remote that you choose and "teach" it how to switch inputs. That "teaching" process is very easy.
In my case, what I did was to choose an old remote from some defunct piece of electronics, and I chose 5 buttons at random on that remote to switch the five inputs on the AR5000.
Then, I also taught my Logitech Harmony universal remote what those five codes were, again using the old remote, and after that switching inputs was simple.
I actually like the fact that no remote is included. For me, it would be just another piece of electronic flotsam lying around doing nothing, since I'd always want to use a universal remote to control all devices anyway.
Not providing a remote also keeps the selling price down, and I'm sure it eliminates some support problems.
Conclusion.
Yes, I'm very happy with it and would recommend it to a friend.
I'm not unhappy that digital audio is not cross-converted, because for me it isn't a problem. But I do think that it's a negative on the selling points side.
in addition..........2006-03-16
It appears it can't convert from digital optical to coaxial, so all the devices you want to use with the switch have to be the same, or whatever you connecting the output to has to be willing to accept coaxial audio sometimes and optical other times.
I'm also not a big fan of the way it switches devices. You have to teach it an IR command, but what if you are using it with a device that doesn't have a remote (say a game console, for example). Now you have one more device to adjust because they didn't want to include a remote.
I haven't noticed signal degradation, though I haven't used it much yet. Over all I'm pretty disappointed because what I got doesn't match the description very closely. I should have done more research.
Though I
poor picture quality.......2006-02-23
I was not impressed at all. I have more components than jacks on my television, so I eagerly awaited the arrival of this switcher. After following the directions and installing the unit, I noticed severe degradation in video signal. It is now sitting somewhere in my closet.
Gets the job done, misleading description.......2006-01-11
I have only used this for a few days, but it gets the job done. However, the description is VERY misleading. Here's why:
1. Only THREE component inputs, the rest are S-Video and composite
2. Component inputs only allow digital audio in, and S-Video and composite only allow L/R RCA. Be wary, as I had something that was component video and analog audio, you will need to get an analog to digital converter to plug it in.
3. There are two outputs, 1 component with digital audio out, and 1 S-Vid/composite with analog audio out.
4. Only S-Vid/composite/analog will come out the analog out, the signal does not go out both outputs at once. I wanted to have digital going to my stereo, and analog out to my TV if i just wanted TV sound, this DOESN'T WORK. This system does not do digital to analog conversion.
5. The optical audio out plug was loose on mine and had to tape the cord on the back so it would stay in.
All in all, it did the trick, I luckily only needed 3 component ins, but I will never be using the S-Vid/composite in. I would say go for something cheaper that doesn't have up-conversion since you can't have component in with analog audio (one of the reasons I wanted the upconversion).

never got them.......2007-12-21
Postal delivery never got to me. Post office insists they delivered but I never got the package. Reported to Amazon and got credit for purchase without any hassle. Cables never showed up.
Just what I needed.......2007-12-14
Simple and straightforward. I needed a nice long cable to reach my printer. This works perfectly and was about 1/4 the price of what I found at Best Buy.
Couldn't be happier.
works great.......2007-12-13
matter of fact, there is nothing much to go wrong with any USB cable. There is no 'fidelity' of signals and such applicable here, unlike the audio-video cables. I bought this cable to connect my printer to my PC. All I had to do was connect one end to the PC and the other to the printer - no manuals to read or nothing. If you have a USB printer (any brand/make should work), just go for this. This is almost the same price most local stores sell 3-foot cables for. 10 ft is good enough for just about any computer desks (most people get away with just 3 or 6ft. Just measure your set up though before you order).
Works like it's supposed to at a fair price!.......2007-12-01
I am currently using this cable with my printer and have no complaints. Last time I bought a cable that was ridiculously overpriced at CompUSA for $30. It's was even the same model! Go ahead and buy this cable, don't go to the local computer store and pay $30 for something that is worth less than $10.
excellent value and quality.......2007-11-12
Belkin makes a great USB 2.0 cable to connect computer hardware together for the ultimate computer experience! The cord is cheap, backward compatible and it does the job very reliably.
I recently purchased a new printer and used this product after having used it to hook up for old printer to my current computer. The cable made hardware recognition and setup remarkably easy as data was transmitted incredibly fast between the printer and the computer.
Hey, I'm no computer technician expert who can speak in fancy "computerese" terms; but when people say this USB 2.0 cable does the job and more they truly must mean it. I have no complaints about this cable.
I highly recommend this product by Belkin for people who need a USB cable. It sure is inexpensive; and you get great quality and value for your buck.
Get one today if you need it--you won't be disappointed.

Belkin power strip.......2007-12-27
It works, but I regret this choice. I overlooked the short cord (2 1/2') which limits it's usefulness. The orientation of the outlets makes it a poor choice for use with converters, since most will cover 2 outlets.
Belkin Surge Protector.......2007-11-13
This product is priced reasonably and is shipped out fast. It has worked great to this point.
not bad.......2007-11-07
there is no light indicator whether the device is switched on/off. the switch is also in an awkward position to easily reach. other than that its fine and working.
Works fine...!.......2007-09-21
This inexpensive little surge protector is working just fine, thank you! If I want to save some money next time I need one of these babies, I'll know where to go for one.
Almost no complaints.......2007-07-09
The 6' cord is nice, and otherwise not really any complaints...
except the on off switch is in a kinda awkward place, and its hard to tell wether its on or off.
