Sony Mex1GP.......2007-11-29
The Sony Mex-1GP is reasonably priced. It plays unprotected MP3 files such as those sold here on Amazon.com. It has a built-in CD-player, am/fm radio, and amp.
The faceplate is removable, and to download MP3 files/songs to it you just plug the faceplate into a Windows 2000 or Windows XP pc's USB port where it acts like a thumb drive or 2nd hard drive. Drag and drop the song file folder into the faceplate and you've loaded your song into your MP3 player. Pretty simple.
I use my Sony Mex-1GP to drive two 6.5" MB Quart door speakers and 2 Infinity 6x9 rear speakers. The built-in amp seems capable of taking all 4 speakers up to their distortion/blowing limits.
The Sony Mex-1GP is easy to install. In my case it re-used the Blaupunkt wiring connector from my previous stereo, so I didn't have to cut/strip a single wire for my Sony Mex-1GP installation. Unplugged the old plastic connector from the Blaupunkt and plugged it into the Sony and I was done. Fastest stereo install ever!
The faceplate control buttons are easy to use (easy to set the clock, too), and I like the analog-style round volume knob.
I have no problem recommending this unit. It's basic, but adequate. Installs easily and downloads songs easily. Looks good in the car. Easy to use. Doesn't need a lot of wiring or a new amp.
Sony MEX-1GP, All the music you will ever need!.......2007-04-15
I love Sony products and this radio is no exception. I doubt I will ever be using CDs anymore with this radio even though it could handle it if I had wanted it too. Between the radio, Sirius, and the Giapanel, I am set. The faceplate holds 1 Gig of music, in MP3 format only. Plenty if you ask me. It will only play WMA files when on CD. Not a big deal. A cable is included and it simply hooks up to your computer and shows as an extra drive on your computer to drag and drop your MP3 files too. Sort by folder if you wish to sort your music into different folders, such as Dance, Country, Etc. Flipping through the folders from the faceplate is as easy as hitting the ablum up or down butons. You also have the typical shuffle and repeat buttons. Choice what you want to display on the faceplate while you listen, be it the time or the track name. I think you can shuffle through your current folder or all your folders if you wish, but I haven't played with that option yet as much. The biggest annoyance I have found with this radio, is that it is very finiky in regards to the satellite radio channels being displayed on the faceplate when using Sat radio. I first had problems with the channels being displayed when I was setting up the Sirius service. I couldn't get the channels to be displayed on the faceplate even though I heard the stations. After speaking with Sony Tech Support directly, I had to use the reset button, which did get the stations to be displayed, even though all my settings were shot. I have found that if you shut off your vehicle before hitting the off button on the radio, your satellite radio channels won't be displayed again until after you hit the reset button on the radio again wiping everything out, having to redo all your settings. This doesn't affect your MP3s that you have stored on your Gigapanel, but you will have to set your clock and radio stations all over again. (sort of a bug) This radio just supplies SO much music, I do not regret getting it. Sony just makes such quality products, how could you be disappointed in one? It is also Satellite radio ready so wether you use XM or Sirius, I don't think it matters, but for those that don't have satellite, Look into it. It is definitely worth the few extra pennies more a month and is fairly cheap if you commute or travel alot,(about the cost of you and a significant other eating at McDonalds once) so my advice is to get it. This radio has a cool blue backlight to it that I like. It also has a fancy plastic case to carry the faceplate around in (which I probaly won't use much), and a remote (fancy, but again, probaly won't use) but there for those looking for that sort of thing. Anyway, I doubt anyone would be disappointed in this radio which you can now find around the internet for about $200. About the only thing I would have liked to see this thing do, is play DVDs, which that isn't what I was looking for anyways, and there is no bluetooth options with it, again not a big deal for me. I just loved the fact that you could store MP3 on the faceplate and that it was Sat Radio Ready. So easy to take along alot of tunes in your car, instead of a bunch of CDs. Check this radio out, you won't be disappointed in a Sony.

OK if you never used TIVO.......2007-12-12
The unit is ok if you never have had a Tivo DVR. If like me you can't live without Tivo then you have to scour ebay for used Directv tivos. Why Directv broke up with Tivo I will never understand. When I wanted to add another DVR to my existing Tivo I let myself be talked into a R15 by a tech who had both and told me the r15 was better. I had it for 2 days and hated it. The most important button for me is the pause button. On Tivo its the 2nd biggest button on the remote, is dead center, and is the only yellow one as well. On the R15 its a tiny button to the left of middle. I returned it and asked for a refurbished Tivo. Two days later a new r15 arrived FedEx. I asked again for a refurb tivo and two days later another r15 came. This happened 4 times before they admitted to me that they can request a Refurb tivo but if the warehouse doesn't have one they send the r15. I went on ebay and bought a used tivo.
I have no idea why Directv tried to reinvent the wheel but I hear the new heads of Directv are looking to rekindle their relationship. One could only hope. I now have 4 receivers in the house. My kids both have the r15 for the last year without any problems.
Bottom line if you never had a Tivo you will probably like the r15. If you have used Tivo you probably will be using ebay.
A Lot of Hot Air!.......2007-11-25
We recently got DirecTV after seeing their ad blitz for 75 HD channels. They brag about their "digital picture and sound," and their great customer service.
The truth is the only way to get digital picture and sound is with a HDTV and an HDMI. Their picture is actually worse than the picture we got with Comcast. Not to mention there is no two year agreement with cable, no picture loss when it rains, you do not have to pay for "leased equipment, and you do not need an ugly dish hanging on your house.
When we purchased our most recent HDTV, we figured we would replace the DVR we had with DirecTV and get an HD DVR to replace it.
DirecTV told us we would have to pay $299 for the privlige of leasing their receiver from them. In addition to this we would have to pay $50 because we were a new customer "and had not established a credit history with them." Also, we would have to pay $20 for shipping and handling and extend our contract for another two years.
Maybe DirecTV thinks it is in the cellphone business because all they want to do is lock you into long-term contracts and make you bleed money to them forever. Their symbol should be a ball and chain because that is what they really are. Cable here I come!
Single worst product I have used in my entire life.......2007-10-20
I cannot even put into words how bad this product is. I was "upgraded" from an original DirecTV TiVo unit because we wanted more space for our shows. What followed was nearly 3 months of frustration and screaming.
In four years, our TiVo had never had a problem. This unit crashed twice in the first 24 hours and two dozen times in the 2 weeks thereafter. DirecTV replaced the unit, twice, and we continued to experience problems. The software was obviously not anywhere near ready for the market and lacked features our TiVo could do for years.
We had to call customer service 22 times during this hellish ordeal. I demanded a TiVo version be sent to me and they admitted that despite the flood of problems this unit has caused, they no longer offer the old version. I ended up buying the R10 model off of eBay and DirecTV paid for it because they could not give me a unit that worked on the most basic of levels.
DirecTV should have never released this product in the state it was and certainly should never have asked anyone to pay for it. The opinions posted online are overwhelmingly negative and I even came across two people that were physically reduced to tears due to this box. I think the fact Amazon suggests the tag "piece of crap" for its reviews sums everything up nicely.
DO NOT BUY THIS or Even Take It as a Gift........2007-09-21
Run from this box. If you have never tried a TiVo, do so. This DVR doesn't come close to the capability of a TiVo. DirecTV programming and service is outstanding, but this DirecTV DVR is incredibly hard to use or understand.
Ignore bad reviews.......2007-09-18
I have owned this product for two years and was shocked when I saw all these negative reviews. There could be several reasons for them:
1. People are blaming the product for their own inability to learn how to use it
2. One person with an ax to grind against DirecTV has created 40 different Amazon accounts and written 40 different negative reviews to make his or her point
This DirecTV DVR is reliable, convenient and easy to use. This unit gets a solid **** (4 stars) from me. Could easily be 5 stars were it not for the whopping two times I had to hit the reset button after power outages. My, what an incredible inconvenience that was. NOT.

Very Versitle Head unit.......2007-12-12
This is an excellent Sony product - great feel to all controls, excellent support for a wide variety of media and on top of that, Video and 5.1 surround sound. Sound quality is excellent (mine is driving Polk Momo's via an MTX amp). Only two complaints...why is it that in the process of creating new products does Sony forget to include those small details that made earlier products so nice. For example, the display on my older Sony unit could be configured to replace the "Source" indicator with the TIME...that way you can see what time it is without having to push buttons...this one doesn't...my older Sony allowed for programing a "Label" for radio stations (call signs or marketing buzz)...this one doesn't allow for this at all. I know, a bit "picky" but hey, I liked both features a lot. Those "picky" things aside, this is a GREAT unit...can't wait to get an LCD panel to match with the unit...may even get the front and back even though I have a truck :) I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!

It handles the basics.......2007-10-13
One of the best kept secrets about HDTV is that it's a broadcast standard, not a satellite or cable format. In fact, they compress the signal to get more bandwidth, while the free over the air signal is the full digital signal sent to those companies. HDTV exists in just about all areas where you can get a tv signal with a regular antenna. This box lets you get those channels.
Congress mandated that HDTV sets have built in tuners by now, but earlier "HD ready" sets did not have to have them. In order to get true HDTV, you need to get a box like this for those sets. Radio Shack sold these, and not many people bought them. Then they cleared them out for $99 each, and anybody with basic cable was able to get more channels, a much cleaner signal, and could use it with an old NTSC TV or an HD ready one.
If you have a recent HDTV, you don't need this. If you have a "regular" TV and can get snowy channels, your signal is probably good enough to get perfect signals that are far better than analog cable or traditional over the air broadcasts. Digital signals are either strong enough or weak enough to get, and if you get them, then there is no snow and no ghosts.
This model does the job reasonably. It does not give you analog channels, so if there are any in your area that are not also available in digital, you have to use your old tuner too. Most ones that come built into HDTVs let you mix and match signals.
If you can get this reasonably cheap, it's worth it to upgrade from analog. The remote does not work well unless aimed very carefully, and it's not compatible with most universal remotes. If you leave the unit on long enough, the firmware bugs will freeze things, or make the channels appear dead. Switching the unit off and on will fix that, and it's not an everyday problem.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
Precision Cinema Progressive technology uses a 12-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with 54 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player's picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.
DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 reverse pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for a simpler connection to a compatible AV receiver (but be aware that digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).
Precision Drive 3 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less than perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs. Past generations of Precision Drive technology were only able to compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took more time and limited the amount of correction possible. This newer system simplifies the process by moving just the lens (instead of the entire optical block) for faster and more accurate error correction.
As soon as you hook up the DVD player, a special Quick Setup screen appears ready to guide you through configuration, step by step, screen by screen. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for up to six discs.
Other playback features include 10-second instant replay, DVD/CD Text display (with applicable discs), a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ (equalization), custom parental control memory for 40 discs, as well as Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes.
