Did the job.......2007-12-10
Worked fine to transfer all data from the hard drive before sending my laptop in for repairs. I didn't need to go through driver installation procedures on the enclosed disk, just plugged it in and it was ready to go.
Works, sort of........2007-12-08
I have three IDE drives to try this on.
The Seagate 160G, never could get it to work.
Maxtor 160G, works every time.
Western Digital 120G finally got to work after setting drive jumper to Master with slave. Would not work when set to Master standalone.
Didn't try the ESATA.
Manual is the typical chinese translated to english type and doesn't have much in it.
Question you need to ask yourself if you're thinking of buying this is, do you feel lucky?
Good product.......2007-09-06
I use it with my laptop to access external IDE drives.
Flawless installation, good access speed.
I have not tested SATA yet.
Power supply is a little bulky, similar to a laptop's.

Good enough but could be better.......2006-10-08
I bought this device to capture pictures from my Camera on a trip to Africa. I ended up taking over 5000 photos and stored all of them on this device.
My configuration:
Connecting Device: Digital Camera Cannon S3 IS
Connecting Device: USB 1.1 Card Reader UCR-61
Memory Card: 1GB Brand Unknown SD Card P/N SD-M01G
Memory Card: 4GB Transcend SD Card TS4GSD150 (150x)
Memory Card: 8GB CF (My friends)
Hard Disk: 80GB 7200rpm Hitachi Travelstar HTS721080G9SA00
Battery Case: No-name included with enclosure
Batteries: "RECHARGE.ABLE" 2500mAh Ni-MH from Walmart
Power Supply: 5v included with enclosure
Overall: Acceptable with limitations.
Good: Very small and compact. Worked pretty well and did what it was supposed to. Transferred pictures as advertised. Worked as a normal USB hard drive. If they did a firmware update to fix the lockups, it would be highly recommended.
Bad:
Occaisionally when transferring with the 4GB card from the camera (USB 2.0) the device would lock up and not complete the transfer. I'm guessing that this is speed related since the card's specified read speed is 22.5MBs (180Mbps). When I dumped the same card from the USB 1.1 reader it worked fine. In fact, it never locked up when using the USB 1.1 card reader.
When using the USB 1.1 card reader the performance was horrible. 1 1/4 hours for the 4GB card and 2 1/2 hours for the 8GB card. Reliable but slow.
The battery case only provided juice for 15-20 minutes. Since I was using a 7200 RPM drive, it would start clicking when it wasn't getting enough power. And no, the lockups described above weren't related to power. When they happened I was using my friends 80Wh monster battery. The battery case was poorly designed and it was difficult to position the batteries so you could close the lid. The lid release was hard to press. Unfortuntately, you can't gang multiple battery packs together. A nice feature would be a voltage regulated battery pack that would take 6 or 8 batteres. Then you could run them till they were nearly dead instead of just until they wouldn't hold 5v.
In order to do the data transfers from the USB connection camera/card reader the enclosure requires that the drive be formatted using FAT32. Unfortunatly, WinNT kernels (WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, Vista) are artificially limited to only formatting 32GB. In order to fully format FAT32, you have to use either Win9x (Win95/Win98/WinME), Linux/Unix/BSD, or some Win9x version of DOS. Win98 and before won't recognize the USB interface so you are stuck with WinME (I used a virtual machine) or Linux . StarTech does not provide Win9x drivers. When I first got the enclosure, my drive had previously been formatted as NTFS. I used WinME in a virtual machine. I reformatted using the existing NTFS partition (no fdisk). That would appear to work when the drive was acting as a USB hard disk but as soon as I transferred pictures from the camera or card reader the FAT on the drive would be corrupted (garbabe file names, garbage directory names). StarTech tech support couldn't offer any suggestions other than "it should work". And they didn't understand the WinNT problem. Eventually, I deleted all the partitions on the drive, repartitioned it, and formatted it. Then everything was fine.
The 5v power supply was great. Spun the 7200 rpm drive right up (it frequently won't start on USB power, even with the double USB connector). And perhaps more importantly, it has a wide range of input power, 50-60Hz and 100-250V, so no problems with international power.
It was hard to know when it was done tranferring files, since the only indication it was done, was the lack of a blinking data light (green). If for example, you left it alone using the battery case and came back 1/2 hour later, the drive would have stopped spinning for lack of power (see 15-20 min limitation above) and the green light would still be lit. No way to know if you got all the files before the hard disk quit. Also, when the data transfer to the camera would lock up, or the drive would spin down (or not spin up) there was no indication of an error. In fact, the only time the error LED (red) ever came on was when I hadn't connected the USB cable. Some better status would be very nice (success and fail).
Would I do it again? Probably not. I bought this primarily because I had a SATA 2.5" hard disk laying around. For only a bit more money you can get a wolverine with a status LCD including the hard disk.
If you get a wolverine, make sure you get one that transfers fast, we had three in our party. One that could read cards and display pictures (nice big color display), one that only had transfer status LCD (fast) and another one with only transfer status LCD (slow). The slow one transferred at about USB 1.1 speed. Beware. The internal batteries were a pain, i.e. only good for about 20-30 minutes (see USB 1.1 speed for 4GB & 8GB above).

The PlayStation3 SUCKS!!!!.......2007-07-26
My PlayStation 3 died, I tried to use this to recover my family videos from the internal HDD. The device was able to communicate with my PC but didn't allow me to extract the data. I recommend using a converter that allows you to connect directly to the IDE port.
Good luck, E!
Product Description
With simple installation and configuration, this is the perfect SATA storage solution! Now, you can add any 2.5" or 3.5" SATA or SATA II drive to your computer without even opening the case. It's as easy as plugging into an available USB port, or if used with Windows 98SE the added step of driver installation. Able to support hard drives sized 80 Gigabytes to 500 Gigabytes, USB2SATA offers data transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps, making it ideal for adding storage to an existing system, or swap files to and from a portable drive.

Portable disk interface.......2007-10-30
Keep this tiny brick in your toolkit and you will always be able to get data off that crashed PC. All you do is unplug the drive to controller cable and plug the adapter in it's place. Plug in a 4-wire power cable and your drive is a USB drive that your laptop can read or backup. Great for anyone doing PC support in the field, pays for itself the first time you don't have to take a machine "back to the shop".
does not have a power adapter.......2007-10-06
I have a laptop that was damaged and I was hoping to use this adapter to recover the data from the HD (SATA). The description of the item says nothing about it requiring a power adapter. Once I got the item and opened the manual you could see a big WARNING: In order to use this device you had to open up your computer and find a 4-pin power cable and connect it to the adapter. Now this wouldn't have been a big problem, if I wanted it connected to a desktop computer. Instead I wanted to connect it to another laptop I have. Out of luck. I suppose it will do the job for you if you can provide power using a 4-pin cable but I gave it 1 star since it was misrepresented. It may deserve more but it just waisted my time. I'm returning it and getting a Bytecc USB to SATA. It is about the same price and it comes with its own power supply.
Customer Reviews:
I have not been able to get these working, at all........2007-12-20
I have not been able to get either one of two of these units to work at all, either with IDE, ATA or SATA...period. My computer simply does not recognize the drives and then SITS there forever TRYING to recognize the drives. I have tried with three different IDE/ATA drives, two different ATA CD-ROM drives and have not been able to get them to work, at all.
Very usefull tool for PC nuts.......2007-10-26
I love this thing. Will hook into just about any kind of device you can find and allows you to quickly hook up devices so they can be used on the fly.
I would suggest a better brand name though as this one came with limited info. The sightly higher priced version come with a power adapter as well that you can use to supply power to your Harddrives and other devices you want to use with it.
Works great with IDE, but not with SATA.......2007-10-05
Great product if you want to use it with IDE driver, just plug the power and the cables and you are set to go. But don't buy it if you want to use with a SATA drive, have tried for several hours to get it to work, but cannot get the HD to get recognized.
USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA adapter.......2007-09-30
worked perfectly and got the job done. that said, I did not evaluate the SATA side of it, only the IDE connection so far.
It works and is very useful for Computer Technicians.......2007-09-23
It works very good.
I tested the cable with a CD-RW unit and a PATA hard drive and it works. Even I tested playing music with a standard compact disc and the music was playing clean without any noise or jumps in the audio track.
This item is not Plug and Play or Hot Plug for the device attached, what I mean is that you must restart your PC to let the OS recognize the unit attached.

$1,500?.......2007-09-09
My computer went "POW" and that was it. Dead. So sad. I removed the hard drive (after unplugging any power anything), and imagined heading off to Geek Squad or Disc Doctor to have that last month of files unloaded -- that last month that I didn't back up...aaaAAARgh!
I was quoted prices from $500 to $1,500 to take a perfectly good hard drive -- that wasn't the part that broke on the old computer -- and retrieve the data.
This adapter costs less than $20. My new computer arrived. I attached these cords to the drive from the broken system -- the connections are obvious -- and attached the USB connection to my new computer.
It appeared as a regular old drive on the new computer. I highlighted and dragged from old to new. Done.
$1,500? Or $500? How about under $20. You do the math.

Saved by the converter.......2007-01-05
I ordered this product due to a disagreement concerning the replacement of my Macbook pro, one of a hundred with a rare logic board issue. After 4 months of use and final papers due right around the corner, I desperately needed to salvage the data on my hard drive, something that was not covered under AppleCare. I removed my hard drive and hooked it up to a friend's computer with this product. It was very easy to set up, no drivers required (for mac) and it quickly backed up my entire hard drive with no issues. I plan on taking out an old laptop hard drive of mine and use it as an external drive using the connector when i get the chance...
Handly little gizmo.......2006-07-29
Great for when you need to mount a SATA hard drive in a hurry without bothering with an external enclosure. (Mind you not many external enclosures support SATA internally anyway.)
I bought this converter because bad RAM crashed my PC and corrupted WinXP. Since I had to re-install Windows I upgraded my primary SATA hard drive, but I forgot to pull some important files from the old one. Enter this SATA-to-USB adapter. I just plugged in my old drive, it mounted like any other enclosure, and within in minutes I had copied my files.
Note that this device comes with a power brick that has a SATA power connector (not pictured). What's a bit odd is that the power supply has no power switch -- you just plug in your drive to power it up, and unplug the cord to power it down. This is not a problem, of course, but a switch might have been a practical addition.
The actual USB 2.0 performance seems good. I didn't benchmark it, but I had no trouble moving large 1-2GB files, which shouldn't be a problem with any USB 2.0 interface in principle, but I've had USB 2.0 enclosures that choke with big files or flake out from time to time. But not this one, apparently.
And excellent little gizmo.
awesome..........2006-07-04
no other word, awesome, excelent tool.
forget about opening your case, pluging the harddrive to your sata controller, and booting up. it is all on the fly, plug the sata to usb to the drive(sata and power), connect it to the pc, and plug the power to the UPS, and you are ready to extract, add, even format the drive.
