HP Ultrium 3 WORM data cartridges will not allow any user data on the tape to be over-written. The drive is able to distinguish a WORM data cartridge from a RW data cartridge using two independent methods. WORM identity is encoded in the LTO-CM; this is different information to the RW tape. The WORM servocode is different. Both sets of information are written at the time of cartridge manufacture and ensure that a drive can never identify a WORM data cartridge as a RW data cartridge.

HP Ultrium 3 800GB RW data cartridges provide the highest capacity and best cost per GB of any tape technology available. The number of tracks on the tape that can be used to store data has been increased to 704 and higher coercivity means improved linear bit density allowing more data to be stored in the same amount of space. HP Ultrium 3 800GB RW data cartridge minimizes network interruption by being capable of protecting over 500GB/hour of data and storing up to 800GB compressed on one piece of media.
