Expensive, but great stuff.......2007-11-16
The main points about the creative suites are that the latest ones are usually not necessary - once you have one, it usually suffices for all that you need and upgrading is not a top priority. They are excellent, but IMO far too expensive - unfortunately if you need Illustrator, Photoshop, and Flash - the Creative Suite is the way to go since it is at least less expensive than buying them each individually.
I think they are great products, but I also feel they are very pricey. They are worth it in that there is little else in terms of option (yes, gimp is a free Photoshop replacement - but I still prefer Photoshop in ease of use, and Illustrator is my preference for vector graphics regardless of any other option so far, and I don't know of any other way to make interactive Flash movies/games without owning Flash itself).
Personally, the other stuff that comes in the Creative Suite is useless. Especially Acrobat on a Mac - perhaps I am just not a PDF power user since just using Mac's built in PDF creation ability works just fine for me.

Why do I need to calibrate my TV?
Right out of the box, your new TV is still set at the factory's default settings. Calibration can greatly improve performance. Your TV can only deliver maximum performance when it's calibrated to work perfectly with your video sources (such as cable and DVD) and with the room's lighting conditions. Color settings can drift over time, so calibration is recommended for older TVs as well.
What are the benefits of calibrating my TV?

I used the SpyderTV to calibrate my 2 yr old Panasonic plasma (which I had originally calibrated with the Avia DVD) and I thought I was watching a brand new TV when I was finished. The software is easy to use. I strongly recommend calibrating in a dark room as indicated in the manual. I does make a big difference.

Used on Sony Bravia LCD and got same results as factory default settings except for tint which was badly biased to red. Managed to get a better picture using trial and error (by varying things like backllight and sharpness which are not evaluated by spydertv). Tech support is a joke. Don't waste your money!
Color Blind.......2007-04-24
I'm in the midst of auditioning LCD panels and the local ISF certified guy wants $350 per panel to calibrate them. I like TV and everything, but there's just no way that I am going to spend $350 on TV that I might possibly keep.
Still, the store settings on any two panels have two problems. First, they are amped up beyond compare as the TV vendors compete to be "who's the brightest" on the lit showroom floor. Sitting in my living room, they are far far too bright to watch. Second, they display colors totally differently. It's just hard to compare to 2 sets that are calibrated so differently.
Now the TVs that we are looking at cost a pretty penny, and it seemed that a couple of hundred dollars to inform the decision was a good idea, just like the hundred dollars for an HDMI splitter seemed like a good idea. The splitter was a good idea, the Spyder TV Colormeter not so much.
I calibrated 2 panels with this product. Two things are true about the calibrations. First, they do not look at all the same. The Sony panel has red shifted flesh tones while the Sharp looks cold and sterile. Second, they look way way worse than before the calibration. After 20 minutes of watching Casino Royale, it was time to revert back to a toned down version of the factory defaults for each.
At first I thought that I had not followed the instructions right. Maybe it was not dark enough. Maybe the sensor was not positioned right. Having done the process several times, I can state categorically that while the colorvision Spyder TV may not deliver good results, it is consistent in its delivery of bad results.
I simply cannot recommend this product.

I own Visio versions since the very first version before Microsoft bought the company.
Visio is a great product for makng organization charts, floor plans, diagrams, strip maps etc.
This latest version is designed to work in Vista and with the latest office product versions.
One thing I noticed is that this version of Visio lacks the current office 2007 interface. So it kinda of feel like it is one version behind.
I wish that microsoft would finally go ahead and just make Visio a permanent part of the office package. Also they need to just have one version. Why do they have the profession edition that comes with a few extra templates (none of which are worth the price). I have own both versions of Visio and I find it very frustrating that if you want to do a quick electrical diagram you have to buy the professional edition. The professional edition offers very specific type templates such as electrical, electronic, architecture etc.
The software shipped rather quickly. I had one minor installation problem where the upgrade would not install due to previous version I own.
I had to go to the microsoft web help site. Fortunately I found why it would not install and fixed the problem. I tried upgrading from a very old version of Visio on CD ROM and the software couldnt not find the dll file to validate. I got an install error message. I went to Microsoft help and discovered I had to point the validation tool to another directory on the CD ROM. Not sure why microsoft didnt build it into the installer.

Not quick and simple.......2007-05-05
I bought this product to do a quick and simple task: Query an Access database with a date range from the user, and put the filtered data onto a spreadsheet. Many, many hours later, I still don't have an acceptable result. I have broken down and ordered two books, something I don't think should be necessary for such a simple task for someone with a decent programming background.
The biggest problem with this product is its documentation. There is a huge amount of information available, but it is very disjointed. Searches yeild all kinds of unrelated material. Examples seem to be marketing driven - show off the product's many glitzy features instead of providing simple, straightforward answers.
I am sure that given adequate investment in learning, this is a very powerful tool. But unless you want to make a career out of it, stay away. I have programmed Excel in Visual Basic, built Windows applications using Borland c++ builder, and written many thousands of lines of c and c++ under Windows and Linux, and never had as much trouble as I have with this product.

But is absolutely not compatable with Vista, contrary to what it says. Also while you can use it on a USB 1 port it skips quite a bit. The enclosed software works fine and is fairly easy to use. Overall a great product for any version except Vista

I've had this unit for a couple weeks and although it's not too bad for the price, I wished I'd spent a little more and got at least the next model up. I bought this for one simple task - converting VHS tapes to digital format and also burn them to DVD, with scenes.
I did *not* use the TV portion of it at all. I just wanted the ability to capture VHS tapes, and this was cheap and just happened to come with the ability to capture TV/cable. From what I could see, the TV capture software seemed like it would be good - it will allow you to look up the scheduling of your cable TV provider and schedule your show recordings.
But my review is based on just capturing tapes through the RCA jacks on the back and then to PC through USB cable.
Setting it up was easy for me, and should be easy for just about everyone with intermediate computer skills. The documentation for the process is OK but could be better - wasn't a problem for me, but could be a little sketchy for a novice user.
PROS:
- Fairly easy / quick installation on PC
- Easy to connect to external device, like a VCR or CamCorder
- Definitely captures video right to your PC through USB port
CONS:
- CapWiz software seems a bit buggy, and you can't use most other (better) third-party captrure software with it.
- CapWiz software is not very intuitive if you plan on marking your movie into "scenes" or "chapters", and you can easily lose your progress if you're not careful
- Biggest disappointment for me was that out of nowhere it suddenly stopped being recognized by my PC. Unfortunately the fix is not as simple as just popping the install CD into your PC. No, I had to completely un-install the software/drivers from my system and then re-install everything from scratch to get it to recognize the device again.
Overall I think this is a decent *cheap* solution for someone who just wants to capture straight video and not do much else with it. For the most part it works, but the software is of questionable quality, as is the video quality even on the best setting.
Still, I would purchase another product from ADS. I have several friends who've been using the ADS capture products for a long time and have been very happy with them.
I would recommend spending a bit more money and getting the next higher model or even one higher model than that.
