Brilliant when set up.......2007-12-27
It's sensibly laid out with buttons covering a large range of functions so you don't have to remember where you programmed things.
The touch sensitive remotes aren't all that good because you don't actually 'press' a button. Having used both I agree with that. A good feature of this remote is that the function flashes to when you press a button to let you know which appliance you are controlling. It also 'merges' control between controls so, say if you only want to control the volume of the TV, don't program the volume with anything else and it will only control the TV volume, whatever the control surface you are using. (Hope that makes sense).
Set up is OK, but you should pre-plan which button is going where and also identify which things you actually use on your old remote. If you do that before you start the setup, you'll be fine.
The programmable system control buttons aren't that good. They don't have a duration control for how long the signal is sent so my Panasonic TV won't turn on because the signal it receives isn't transmitted long enough for it to react which means I still have to turn the TV on then select AV then change to CBL for the digital box which is a bit of a drag. Having said that it's so much better having one remote instead of four.

This is terrific. It hardly worked right with any of my devices just by entering the code, but once programmed with its learning capability (which is VERY simple to do) it works like a charm and controls everything, even the most obscure functions. Just terrific. Don't pay 5 times the price for something that will do no more that this. My only complaint is that it is not backlit, which means you have to navigate by touch in the darkness.
Oh, I forgot to add that Amazon's price is terrific too.
Great moderately priced remote.......2007-12-14
This remote is perfect for my system. It is a step up from the similarly priced One for All remote we had before. We just have a TV, VCR, DVD player, and 5.1 Surround System, and this remote handles all of the functions very well. It is extremely easy to program, the learning function works well, and the remote feels very nice in your hand (it feels solid).

Not only are all your remotes reduced to one, all that previous button pushing is history, too. The 'learning' function is a snap to figure out. Here's my 'time for bed' example: one press of a system control button turns off the TV and DVD player, turns on the satellite receiver, tunes into preferred satellite station, tunes amp to satellite band and selects amp sleep mode. Nighty-night!
Ergonomically, it could benefit from a more rounded base; it would be more comfortable to hold. Aside from that minor quibble this remote is a very good bargain.

Worth it to get the Sony Brand cables.......2007-12-21
For those who don't know, HDMI and component cables offer much better image quality (clarity, contrast, sharpness) than standard cables (called composite) that are included with the PS3. There has been a trend to manufacture "cheaper" (less quality) component cables as of late, because most people with are opting for HDMI, those who have HD tvs (which i don't happen to have.) I tried a third party manufacturer's ps3 component cable and not only did i get some "static" in the picture quality, but the sony cable produced a much better image. This is because the Sony brand cable is a high quality product (OFC copper and gold connectors.) A component cable will make a huge difference in your movie and game play experience, and I would definitely suggest getting a good one, like this one from Sony, versus other "poorer" quality cables offered by other companies.

These cables look and feel high quality and give a high quality picture. You will need to adjust your contrast/brightness settings once you use these cables to get the best picture.
For some reason when I hook up the Ps3 to my tv via HDMI I get terrible color banding.
So I was forced to buy these for a fix. I was expecting a big picture downgrade, but you dont lose much. HDMI however is better, crisper and sharper picture. I've seen some tvs hooked up with cheap component cables where the color looks washed out and theres picture problems. Thats not the case with these cables, you get the feeling that these component cables deliver the absolute best component picture possible.

I need another pair!.......2007-12-26
I work in remastering music from vinyl to cd and needed another pair of headphones for my room with the turntable instead of draggin my MDR-V600s from one room to the next. So I asked Santa for a new pair of headphones and looked up a website online with a pic of a pair of Sony headphones that looked close to what I already had. Wow! What a difference I was hearing even compared to my 100 dollar V600s! The cups have a nice tight fit and silence the outside far better than the V600s. The sound has MUCH more brilliance to it and cleaner bass...I may have to dig up some of my favorite cds now and see what I've been missing! I also may be looking for another pair of these now so I have them in both rooms! My only concern and disappointment is in the wire hanging from the sides of the phones, couldn't Sony embed the wires inside the headloom like the V600s? Just makes them look cheap in my opinion. You simply cannot go wrong in purchasing these phones.

These were recommended to me after I gave a mixed review to the Sony MDR-V600s. I've never been as impressed by my V-600's as the Sony MDR-V6 phones that I lost. The earlier pair seemed trimmer, lighter, with a "cleaner" sound--no gratuitous boosting of the bass. My impression is that, although still being sold, Sony's support for the MDR-V6 is minimal and that their closest equivalent is the MDR-7506, not the V600s. The 7506's sound less bass heavy and feel less constricting. In fact, the specs indicate an even lighter weight and a shorter cord (best for radio announcing) than the MDR-V6 phones. And it doesn't hurt that they're available through Amazon Prime--which is not the case with MDR-V6's. (The 7506's are my favorite Sony's, even though the phones I've been going to the last few months--despite all my other Sonys and Sennheisers--are a cheap, admittedly fragile, pair of Koss UR40s--hardly professional but lightweight and great-sounding, until the head-band breaks or the thin light cord gets pulled loose).

These cans are great for anything with low amp power. They are easy to drive and nice and punchy. The high end can get a little brite on some recordings, but overall the best $100 phones on the market.

If you're used to buying $10 earbuds, these might seem exorbitantly priced. However, if you appreciate quality sound, you won't be disappointed. They sound great and are very sturdy. Much more durable than the Bose headphones in the same range.
The spiral cord and screw-in 1/4 adapter are a nice plus.
I use them for mixing audio and video and have been very happy with the results. They are also pretty comfortable to wear. A big issue for long sessions.

I need a set of headphones that are light and comfortable for wearing for several hours at a time. The Sony headphones fit the bill. Sound quality is excellent and overall build quality comes up to what you expect from Sony. The price does not break the bank either.

Could be perfect... but VISTA..........2007-12-26
Short and simple... Everything about this laptop screams attention to detail. For those who are familiar with Sony's VAIO line, you are not going to be disappointed except one thing - Visa. Aside from that blemish, the 2 gigs of RAM is more than enough to multitask with minimal slowdown. The 200 gig hard drive is good for almost all your docs. and multi-media files. (If it's not, get a external drive) It's light, and durable for normal use, e.g., taking it to cafes, school, libraries, work in your backpack or satchel. Gaming is doable, however, for the hard core gamers you might want to take a pass. The best thing is the price. I went to the Sony web-site and even call Sony direct and they couldn't beat the price I got from Amazon, i.e., with tax and shipping added in. I'm still debating on reinstalling XP, but there is no doubt about getting this laptop. -D
Best laptop I've ever owned.......2007-12-20
I have nothing but good things to say about this Sony model. I was so impressed with it that I bought a second one after having the first for 3 months and may buy a third. I'm using both to develop and test high-end graphical analysis and diagnostic software for medical applications. There may be issues for some users installing old software applications because they are not supported by the Vista operating system, but this would be true for most new computer purchases. It is fairly difficult to find any laptop with XP installed and if you do find one, there is usually a waiting period to have it delivered and you will pay a premium price for it.

Since I bought this computer I have had it in for servicing more than anyone should expect. seems to crash or stop working for no reason and sony service can never explain why. Sony promised extras like a backpack and walkman which I never got. will never buy sony product again.
a lack of video card.......2007-12-19
This system received a two from on one premise: onboard video card. A lack of "true" video card causes this laptop to be useful no more than basic video, lackluster gaming, and a slue of other graphically non-intensive operations. If you are looking to buy this for a student, stay clear. This laptop would be fine for limited business applications (office suites and email for example), that is about all.
Why are new Windows computers vehicles for advertising?.......2007-12-02
As far as features go, it's hard to beat this notebook - the dual-core processor and 2 GB ram suggests that it should scream. But it doesn't, for two reasons:
The first is Vista. Compared to XP, there's nothing much new under the sun. Sure, there's some GUI candy, but that just makes it run slower. I've turned it off as much as I can. Indeed, I'm currently looking for a copy of XP to install.
My biggest complaint is the CRAP that's loaded on here. Sony has "utilities" that are nothing more than thinly-veiled 60 day trials. Microsoft doesn't get off the hook either: They've got trial versions of Office. This is all good, if you're new to computers, but if you just want to get down to business, expect to take about 3 hours to get all the bloatware off. Note to vendors: This is MY system, not yours. It is not another medium to sell me junk. So, this is the last Sony I'll buy.
Compare this to Apple's OSX: You start the system, personalize it, and you're working from a new install in 10 minutes.

I bought this set for my family room for this holiday. It sounds great if you play a lot of pop music. The 8" base is quite powerful condisering its size. I am happy with all aspects of this system except the front speaker. I will replace it with a polk audio double channel one to make a perfect system under $300 budget.

This is a very nice system and a great value.
The sound quality is excellent and plenty of power to fill an ordinary living room. The Sub woofer is big and ugly, but it sounds great. If you like driving bass, this is a good sub. It isn't super-loud, but more than enough power for 99% of sane people. I live in an apartment, and I keep the level at about 60% of full-volume. I ran it at full power for a while, just to test it, and the sound didn't distort.
It has a ton of connectors including optical audio and HDMI, which should future-proof it for a while. The video switching is great because monitors never have enough inputs. This is not only a great addition to the audio portion of you setup, it helps you organize the video signals.
There doesn't appear to be any signal loss when switching video through the unit. I was a bit worried about this because I have a very long analog component video cable running to my ceiling mounted projector. I'm not sure if it amplifies the signal, but adding the switch and 6 feet of cable to the signal did not harm it.
It's very intuitive to hook everything up if you are familiar with everyday video/audio gear. It included speaker wire, composite video/audio cable (unshielded red-white-yellow RCA cable), digital coax audio cable, remote-batteries, good manual, and packaged very well. It also includes a small microphone that you use to auto-adjust the sound levels once everything is hooked up: a pretty neat feature.
One caution: if you saw this at Sony's site first, the Sony site specifications are wrong. Sony advertises on their site that this has a built in disc player. It is obvious to most that it doesn't, but I wanted to clarify this in case you read the specs there.
You can download the manual in PDF at Sony's site, which does include accurate info including a diagram of all of the inputs on the rear of the unit. Just search at Sony's site for the model number.
A good value at $200. Recommended.

if your not picky , these will still sound bad, i don't recommend this set, the receiver is fine but the speakers just don't cut it, you will find yourself replacing them.

I selected this system over others primarily for the HDMI ports so that I do not have to use multiple cables for video and audio but discovered that the y are only pass-through for video. I invested in a DVD player with HDMI port and changed my cable box for one that has HDMI. All are connected to the system using the HDMI ports with an optical cable from the cable box for sound. The volume on the system is maxed out but the sound from the speakers are low when using either DVD or TV. It is not worth the trouble and cost to return it.

Let me start by saying this system has wonderful sound, especially for its price. Don't be fool by the claim that it has HDMI. It only has HDMI "Pass through", which is esentially worthless. You'll wind up running an HDMI cord to your TV, and an optical to this system. You didn't really think that you could get a full HDMI capable system for this price, did you?

The Sony D380P is fine for young kids to watch all their favorit VHS and DVD movies. It is a Christmas present for grandkids and I can tell more about it after it is opened. It does say it is NOT A RECORDER.

I got this for my kids' room. Needed an inexpensive DVD/VCR combo. I set it up last night, and watched a dvd with them, and found that it's quality is above what I expected for the price. The only complaint I have is the image quality when inactive (the sony screen when a dvd isn't playing). It flickers, but not noticeable when it is in play mode. It also could be the TV, as it is old and tired, so I can't say for sure that the unit is to blame.
The rewind feature is great (Flash rewind a whole VHS is 120 seconds) and overall, I am happy. This may not be what you want if you are building a dynamo home theater system, but if you just want to play some movies and get a decent quality out of it, I would recommend this one. The remote is easy, and can be programed to work with most televisions as an alternative to two remotes (not a Samsung, though, so be forewarned if you have a samsung television).

Option packed for the $$$.......2007-12-21
I purchased this receiver to untangle the web of cables that spanned the space between my audio rack and 60" SONY XBR rear projection HDTV. After removing all of my existing cables, I was thinking that I would be able to make HDMI connections between the Cable Box/DVR, Upscaling DVD player, and the receiver, then make one HDMI to DVI connection to the TV. HOWEVER, when that is done, Audio drops out at the receiver level (which seems quirky, but is documented in the manual), so I needed to pick up audio with optical cables. The automated audio setup is really sweet, using the provided microphone and a tripod, and this program picked up two out of phase speaker connections that I had to correct.
Sound is terrific, and we feel like our Home Theater experience has been enhanced by this purchase.

I've had this system for one week now and I can say with confidence that it is one excellent unit. The set-up was easy and the speaker setup was quick and efficient. The system sounds great. I had visitors over and every one of them notice the quality surround sound. The instructions were also easy to read and it clarified a lot of my questions and concerns. I had an old Kenwood receiver, I can definitely state, the performance and sound is overwhelmingly superior.

Easy to set up. My only disappointment was with the HDMI out. You can not use an HDMI to DVI conversion cable. You will lose all sound if you do. To take full advantage of the new unit I'll have to wait until I buy a new TV.
Great Amplifier but one huge problem!!.......2007-11-13
This does what it does very well, actually better than very well if one considers the relatively low price. However, what Amazon and Sony don't tell you (except burried in tons of tiny statements) is that IF you use the amplifier's HDMI output to feed signals to your TV, the amplifier will ONLY transmit video signals (from your cable/sat box and DVD) if they come in via the HDMI input. In other words, if your DVD does not have 'HDMI out', and you connect it with the component or yellow video cable, the Sony amplifier will NOT NOT transmit (the tech tern is "up convert") the signal to your TV. For such a connection to work, you will have to connect the amplifier to the TV via normal cable instead of or in addition to HDMI.

A great value in consumer electronics. Purchased mine from Amazon for less
than $300 dollars and could not be more pleased. Easy to program however it will be necessary to spend some time with the Instruction Manual in
order to completely familiarize oneself with the myriad capabilities. Mine
arrived with an inoperable input selector however this was corrected under
warrenty by a local authorized repair facility and the support that I
received from both Amazon and Sony was EXCELLENT. All of my components are
connected via HDMI and the 3 input sources that this unit provides are
sufficient. Sound in my opinion is excellent however I'm no audiophile.
I'm driving a set of Bose 301's as main with a pair of Infinity SM65's as
surround. Bose VCS-10 center channel and an Advent ASW1200 subwoofer.

I wanted a simple battery-powered FM radio to pick up a local low-power station. I have had problems receiving this station with many other radios, but this one does the job with flying colors. I suspect that part of the reason for its good performance is that it uses analog tuning and is monophonic.

If you need a simple, clean cut radio, this is it. The 4" speaker does
a good job of clean reproduction. Don't expect deep bass and shrill heighs,
though. Just good FM, and fair AM reception. Weather and TV are OK too.
Remember that TV audio will disappear in two years when the FCC will implement the new digital TV broadcasting.
A big plus, this radio has built in power adaptor. No bulky outside gitzmo.
Size is right, tuning is good with light indicator. A great radio for the
price. If you want more, then look at the new stereo HD radios. Best bet for
this is the small but great Radi-osophy HD 100. Check it out.

Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive. This feature detects image changes at the pixel level versus other types that detect image changes at the scan line level.
