Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hesitated to Buy It - Now I want 3 more!!!.......2007-12-26

I purchased this product for a family member and they absolutely loved it. I hesitated at first because of the price but when they opened it and when we saw the quality, I have wanted 3 more since!! AMAZING JOB

5 out of 5 stars Picture quality is great, software is not.......2007-12-24

Very happy with the picture resolution. Even our old, scanned photos look really good. In fact, we like it so much, we purchased the 7" version as a gift for another relative.

I do have to say the software aspect of this product is not good. It definitely is not intuitive and there are no detailed directions on how to transfer pictures from various formats. This particular model held approximately 60 pictures of varying resolutions (half were 5 megapixel, half were old scanned photos). We needed more memory so we purchased a 1GB memory card. We found we had to transfer the photos on our PC to the camera which contained the new memory card. We thought we could do this via Windows Media Player but it wouldn't recognize the camera as an external source. Therefore, we had to use the Canon camera software to do the transfer. Problem is the scanned photos had to have their resolutions changed before the software would allow uploading from the PC to the memory card in the camera. This was a very convoluted way to load a memory card.

I would highly recommend this product if you only need enough space for 50 pictures. That way, you can load them directly from your PC to the photo frame although that's not even intuitive. You have to create a new folder within the photo frame program, then copy and paste pictures instead of click and drag. Once you get this all figured out it's not bad. I would not give this product to an older person who has to figure out how to set it up. We're giving it as a gift to an older person but since we did all the setting up, it should be fine.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful hardware, terrible software.......2007-12-18

The Philips 9FF2M4 Photo Frame that is the object of this review (and I presume most of the 162 other reviews posted here) is a simply gorgeous hunk of hardware. Its sleek but hefty chrome and acrylic construction and its packaging almost make you think it was made by Apple. And once (if?) you get pictures loaded into the darn thing, it performs equally well (at least mine has... so far -- but read other reviews for more caveats).

That's the good news. Nearly all the rest is bad, or at least frustrating. Indeed, I finally found the clues I needed to get started overcoming Philips' astonishingly bad software by Googling "Philips Photo Frame" + "FRUSTRATION." Philips' poorly written documentation tells you to load photos from your computer using its Photo Manager software. Wrong. That may load a few photos, sometimes, but if your system is like mine (Windows XP with all the security and other patches installed) the process will either fail immediately or stall after loading a few. And once you discover how to work around that bug, your work has just begun.

If you accept the challenge of making it work despite all the obstacles Philips throws in your path, however, you'll find that part of the consumer experience with the Frame is actually kind of fun -- in between my curses and tantrums were any number of moments of wild exhilaration when I found that yet another work-around had overcome the lastest impasse. But if you can't spend the two days consumed by my effort to get the Frame working in time to be a Christmas gift, and you still want to buy the thing, the following notes that I made during my ordeal may be helpful.

Oh, one more caveat: from reading reviews of lots of other digital picture frames it seems clear that Philips has no monopoly on bugginess and frustration. And the most important factor in determining which one to take a chance on buying would appear to be confidence that you can return it when it doesn't work right!

How to make the Philips 9FF2M4 Photo Frame work:

1. Do NOT use it's Photo Manager software to load photos! It may load a few, or it may not. Work-arounds for this and most of Frame's various bugs:

2. Use Windows Explorer to copy the JPG files from your PC to the root directory of the Photo Frame ("Removable Disk I:" or whatever the lowest drive letter of the several ones belonging to the Frame that Windows will see plugged into the computer).

3. When loading has been completed disconnect Frame USB cable from computer. Frame will then say it is "uploading" the images you loaded into its root directory, counting as it goes along, resizing them when necessary, and automatically moving them to the default Photo Frame album.

4. Use Frame's firmware to move photos from the default album to another album on a memory card.

5. Use Frame's firmware to set up the Photo Slideshow options, rename or create new albums, etc. It works OK.

6. If a photo gives the Frame indigestion and it freezes when you hit [Photos][Photo Frame][Default album] and try to "navigate to the right to view your album thumbnail photos" here is what to do:
a. Stick a toothpick in the tiny reset hole (next to Power button). Frame will go black and then reboot itself.
b. Connect frame to computer, fire up Philips Photo Manager software (this much of it will work flawlessly), and delete the offending photo(s) from the Frame's Default album.
c. Load offending photo(s) into PhotoShop, [Save for web & devices...], uncheck the "Optimized" box, and [Save] as JPEG.
d. Now you can upload the "webbed" versions of the files that that froze the Frame into the root directory again and Frame will behave properly this time.

7. When you get through loading photos, even though you did everything right and all the photos seemed to load OK, some may show up as blanks when you view them in magnified form in the thumbnail window. They won't show up in a slideshow either. Not to worry; delete them and reload them into the root directory again. Chances are the second time will be the charm. If not, try "webbing" them (6.c above).

8. To get photos in the sequence you want them, create one or two work albums and shuffle photos from one to another using Frame's firmware "copy to" or "move to" functions.

1 out of 5 stars Mechanical problems - didn't even get to load photos.......2007-12-15

I've read so many positive reviews of this frame, I thought it would be a no-brainer to select it. As soon as I charged it up and began to use it, I noticed the 4-way toggle was dead when pressing to the left. This makes it nearly impossible to access certain menus. Lifting it a particular way with my thumbnail managed to engage it sporadically.

Then the metal stand shocked me - it's either a part from a different (larger) frame or was defectively formed. The frame stands perfectly vertical on the surface it's placed on (i.e., on the verge of tipping over forward). That renders it essentially useless as a table-top display.

I didn't even bother trying to load photos, so have no comment on its overall electronic performance. It's going straight back to Amazon for a refund, not exchange.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier.......2007-12-14

I received mine a few days ago and I'm just thrilled with the quality of the picture. I'm a professional video editor and I thought that I would be disappointed with the resolution. Boy was I wrong!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Set-up, Good Quality.......2007-12-27

As is to be expected from Philips, this Wireless VOIP phone is an excellent product. I set it up in less than 5 minutes and it worked straight away with my Skype account. Call quality is good througout my 2-bedroom apartment (lots better than my T-mobile Blackberry). I definitely recommend it to regular Skype users who don't always want to sit in front of their computer screen with a headset on.

5 out of 5 stars What a breeze! We use Skype even more now........2007-12-27

This phone set up in just a couple of minutes. Now we get all our calls on the one phone - the land line ones and the Skype ones. No need to have the computer on either. The sound is excellent and the battery time is much better than our Belkin wi-fi phone.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Money .......2007-12-27

Have been using the phone for about a month and its truly been a blessing. Living thousands of miles from home the phone really facilitates contact and communication. The phone took no more than a few seconds to set up, and the sound quality is on par with my mobile phone and even a land line. The interface is extremely user friendly and a pleasure to use. Battery life is comparable to any standard cordless phone on the market, I've had conversation of over an hour long with barely a dent in the battery life. As with any new technology their are a few bugs, such as dropped calls and loss of mic, however they occur very rarely and are easily rectified in a matter of seconds. These shortcomings have in no in anyway hindered my enjoyment of the product.I highly suggest this phone to avid Skype users, well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Good phone.......2007-12-25

(+)good look
(+)works beautifully, just hook up and start talking
(+)no pc needed

(-)Battery life poor with speaker
(-)Gets hot after few mins of talk.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent skype/landline phone!.......2007-12-24

I needed a decent skype phone that will not need my PC to be on and which will support also a landline - since having SKYPE phone, landline phone and 4 mobile phones in my home I found to be slightly too much...

I have been using this product for couple of days and so far have been very satisfied. As opposed to some products I have already tried (SMC WIFI phone offered on skype.com), this software (even though it looks the same) works much faster on PHILIPS phone. The phone is very easy to set up and has a noticeable loudspeaker - very nice for conference calls.
I have also bought an additional handset and the set up was very easy. the base station supports up to 4 handsets which can call each other internally. It supports only ONE skype account login - which is "cloned" over various handsets - which I find slightly unfortunate because it would be really cool to allow 1 skype account per handset at time and not 1 account per base. Apart from that this product really rocks! Highly recommended!

an advice for european customers - the charging adapter supports only 120V (and not 120V-220V like many other devices) - therefore the price difference between the US and EU is not very convenient as you need to buy the electricity converters (my case).

This DVD player WILL NOT work with the new iPods . . . anyone interested, stay clear. This problem was identified within the first few minutes with Philips customer support . . . time for Philips to offer some deep, deep discounting since this product is sooo out of date.

This is a nifty little device.
Pros:
- Video display is decent
- Nice case construction
- It played divx from the SD card

- It didn't work with my iPod Classic video (thats an apple lockdown)

I don't really care about the battery life. I will plug it in whereever I go and if they don't have power then I will either sleep or listen to my iPod.

The best part--> I bought this new for $89 at my local Walmart.

4 out of 5 stars Like the Frame.......2007-12-26

I bought this frame for myself for Christmas. I love the look of the frame and the picture quality is great.
The cons are, that there is not much storage without a media card. So get a media card. After I downloaded my pictures to the media card it was a little difficult to figure out how to few them once I plugged the media card in to the frame. It loaded the pictures put it would not show them. I then took out the media card and the pictures were stored in the frame. I thought that was wired since the directions just said to plug in the media card and the pictures are ready to be viewed. I figured that the media card stays plugged in, in order to view the pictures that are stored on it. But you have to take it out.
Also, the stand does not lock in very well and falls of very easily when you pick up the frame.
Overall so, I love the frame. Just some minor problems.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad so far.......2007-12-26

The quality of the displayed photos if very nice. My wife loves it. Its a great way gain access to all those photos that have been sitting on the PC. Setting the resolution of the photos to match the native resolution of the frame (720x480) lets you store a lot more in the frame's memory or an external memory card. It also makes the transitions between photos smoother since the frame doesn't have to do convert the photos on the fly.

A couple of issues though...

The software supplied provides a method of accessing CF card which doesn't seem to work, so I couldn't download photos from PC to the a CF card in the frame using the supplied USB cable & software. The manual didn't provide enough information to get past this issue.

I fell back to copying my photos to the CF card via a card reader/writer attached directly to the PC (no frame). This works fine except windows doesn't seem to be giving me access to the full capacity of the CF card. This is not an issue with the frame itself. I tried two CF cards (1GB, 128 MB), two card reader/writers, and two XP PCs with the same result. So it seems to be an XP issue. XP shows the capacity of the CF cards correctly, but writes fail after about 36 MB on both. If anyone has any insight into this issue, I'd appreciate some assistance.

4 out of 5 stars Good value.......2007-12-26

It is a nice product at this price point. I would have liked if it could be wall-mounted and compatible with my mac but it is not.

Wow! This frame shows excellent images with great resolution. I bought one for my mom for Christmas and was very pleased with the quality of the photos shown. A friend just bought a Pandigital for me and it was terrible due to distorted images. Though you may pay extra, there is a huge difference between this frame and others. Pay the extra money because you won't be disappointed. I am returning the Pandigital so I can buy the Phillips frame.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Apartment reception, finally!.......2007-12-26

I like in an apartment complex in Des Moines, Iowa and receive all my TV programming via rabbit ear antennas. When I switched to HD, I was amazed at how great I could pick up "most" channels without all the static. I had been using a Radio Shack 15-1878 ($33) amplified antenna on my TiVo in the livingroom and on my Elgato EyeTV Hybrid HDTV receiver in the bedroom. It worked okay, but couldn't pick up "all" the HDTV stations without adjusting the antenna. If I adjusted on a per-channel basis, it worked just fine, but with automated recorders like TiVo, I either couldn't get ABC or another weak station.

After reading an extensive review of this MAST510 antenna, I was about to order one to try out. A Google search revealed it was for sale at Wal Mart as well (an option in case it doesn't work for you; easier to return to a local brick and mortar store).

My results: great! On my new TiVo HD recorder, every channel picks up around 80% signal strenth, and it found about 6 new digital channels I didn't even know we had (informercials, etc.). It also picks up the analog stations (with static) better than my old antenna.

This antenna worked great for me -- and solved my problem of having an antenna I could just "set and forget" and know my TiVo could pick up all teh channels I needed.

I recommend, but am always open to learning of an even better antenna.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good, but Adjustable Gain Not So Good.......2007-12-22

This is my second HDTV antenna choice and so far the best performing (for me). My house sits low and surrounded by trees. I don't get good cell phone, FM or TV reception at my location. There must be quite a bit of reflections and multi-path signals because of the surroundings, which is evident in bad windy weather.

But, for me this antenna has performed very well. No video drops or pixelation (although weather has been good lately and not fully tested in bad weather).

The problem with this antenna is that the antenna gain slowly diminishes after several hours. For example, after setting the amplifier about half-way, several hours later it will be at zero. Why? I don't know - design flaw? I tried two and both behaved the same. Someone at an audio forum confirmed theirs also behaved as such.

It's a problem for me because the antenna connects to my Tivo and has to be operational all the time. Tivo can record at any given moment.

If the amplifier gain operated as expected I'd give 5-stars for performance, reception and value. Remember, everyone's situation is different, so your mileage may vary.

4 out of 5 stars A well engineered HDTV indoor antenna........2007-12-18

I purchased this antenna to replace a set of cheap unamplified "rabbit ears" used with a HDTV ATSC(over the air)tuner card in my PC.
The result was a slight improvement in reception.
I didn't get any new channels but it seems the reception is more stable and less "stuttering" experienced.
The advantages of the antenna appear clear though when considering the conveniences in connecting and adjusting it:
- a stable base tat fits perfectly on a windowsill.
- the UHF loop rotates freely almost 360 deg and the telescopic "rabbit ears" can be adjusted independently in any direction. Both without moving the base.
- the amplifier adjusts in five steps via up-down push buttons. The amplifier use is tricky though,it appears each channel needs a different setting for best reception.
- a separate connector allows bringing in the CATV cable and a selector switch is provided to choose either ATSC or cable reception.
- a "brick" type power supply is provided and an on-off switch is present on the antenna base.
- all connections are made at the antenna base; no "hanging" cables used in this design.
Al in all a decent antenna with a better design than similar items.

5 out of 5 stars nice antenna.......2007-12-14

We were getting decent reception from normal indoor antenna / rabbit ears, and this product really "sharpens" up most channels. It also eliminated for us the need to "tweak" settings when we change channels.

Just to note - our reception was already decent with no amplification. This product performed well.

The one thing I don't like about it is the buttons to adjust the gain, and the on/off switch is on the back. Not a big deal, though, and for the price, this is a nice looking antenna as well!

5 out of 5 stars good antenna.......2007-12-08

Years ago I got great results with a couple of amplified directional outdoor UHF antennas. Those antennas didn't work well indoors. This is the first indoor UHF TV antenna I've seen that worked well. There's not much trouble with ghosts and the gain control can be adjusted for minimal snow and best color. There's less audio distortion. Broadcast analog TV is more enjoyable now, and I'm confident that I'll get good reception of digital broadcasts.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Buyer BEWARE!!! DO NOT BUY for newer I-Pods!!!!!.......2007-12-27

This product DOES NOT work with the 6th generation I-Pods! NOWHERE on the box or in the documentation does Phillips make that clear, in fact the unit is stammped "insert 60 and 80 GB I-Pod here". We bought the new 80GB Classic and when we connect it to the player, we could not get the video to work on the DVD player. Initially when we called Phillips they said it would work, but after getting passed to a supervisor they admited that it ONLY works with the old 5th generation I-Pods, and they are aware that they do not state that ANYWERE on the packaging or documentaion, nor did they seem to care. Nice Christmas suprise for our daughter - THANKS Phyllips!

3 out of 5 stars An iPod Classic 160gb CAN BE made to work with one of these units.......2007-12-22

There is a way to make the iPod Classic 160 gb work with the Philips line of Portable DVDs with iPod docking but its awkward and requires the purchase of Apple's Composite AV Cable ($50). Apple installed in the 6th generation iPods what amounts to an electronic lock. When you set the player up to send out video externally it will ask you to "Please Connect Video Accessory". It's looking for the sixth generation Apple Composite AV Cable plug. Somewhere embedded in the plug's configuration is the key to the lock that the player is looking for. Once you insert this plug the movie you have selected will begin to play and all you have to do then is remove the cable and insert the unit into the dock and you should see your video displayed. As i said before, this is an awkward work around and should you go back to the main menu to select a different movie you will have to perform these steps again. For those of you (like me) who were stuck with one of these units, this work around just might make you feel a little better about your purchase. Good Luck!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Promising device fails to deliver.......2007-12-22

This device was a fantastic idea. A portable DVD player that allowed you to hook up your video iPod, and watch your iPod videos on a much larger screen. It could also play movies encoded in Divx/Xvid, which would allow one to cram up to 4 movies onto 1 disc.

Spending countless hours traveling on airplanes and sitting around in airports, this device seemed like a 'must-have'.

So, I got it.

It does everything it claims to do. Divx files play just fine, DVD titles play just fine. The video-out from my iPod works fine.

Which is all for naught... because the screen resolution is absolutely dreadful.

A person can barely read any subtitles, from within any media including standard DVD titles, as the text is blocky and squished together. The picture itself appears blocky and somewhat pixelated.

I've seen plenty of other portables that had screens much, much sharper. I wish this was comparable.

If Philips was able to put a sharper and clearer screen on this device, I'd be willing to pay $100 more for it. With the screen they went with, it's not even worth 2/3 of the price I paid.

4 out of 5 stars IPOD portable dvd player.......2007-12-22

Great deal for the money. Took this on our trip and it worked great. The screen is a nice size and I was able to play all my shows that I downloaded on my IPOD. Picture quality was also great on the IPOD and dvds.

The only problem I had was that the battery did not last very long, but I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys watching Dvds along with IPOD downloads.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best item I have bought all year!.......2007-12-02

This is the best item I have bought all year!!! I have a 30G IPOD and a two year old. Can I say more? Everywhere we go we have all of our movies, pictures, etc. We can plug it up to most televisions anywhere.Great for travel and gives mom's a break when shopping, doctor appointents, etc. This is a must have!!!

1 out of 5 stars Awful product.......2007-11-15

This adapter is totally worthless. I bought it to avoid replacing my factory head unit with a new deck (w/aux input), and I was very disappointed. I returned the adapter and replaced my head unit. Good decision.

1 out of 5 stars constantly flips sides.......2007-11-02

I already have the Sony one, but I needed another for my husband's car, so I tried this one. This product sucks. In my Honda Pilot, it constantly switches from Side A to Side B every 2-3 minutes, so there are long pauses in between while I am listening to my ipod. I am going to buy another Sony one because that one works great.

1 out of 5 stars Not that I expected :(.......2007-10-30

the adapter pops out of a cassette player 5 minutes after playing. checked my player with anther tape - works ok. does anybody know if thia adapter requires a player that reverse cassettes automatically? mine does not do that

5 out of 5 stars Works as expected.......2007-10-06

I bought this 4 weeks ago to take on my vacation to go with my Garmin GPS. It worked great for this. I usually left the GPS connected to it. I liked this setup as I could easily adjust volume and also shutoff the audio directions when I didn't want to hear them. Bonus was that at night we played some DVDs on my laptop and I plugged the adapter into it's headphone jack. The RV' audio was much better than with the small laptop speakers.

Anyway, we were on the road for 3 weeks straight and It is working like a champ.
