Amazon.com Product Description
Sony's TCM-200DV cassette recorder offers a multitude of features which make it an excellent choice for a cassette voice recorder. The two channel, one track recorder promises accurate recording. For recording ease, Sony has installed double recording time and voice operated recording. The double recording time gives you the option of recording at a standard speed, or at half the standard speed, essentially giving you double the recording space. With voice operated record, you no longer have to worry about constantly shutting off and switching on the record button; with the first hint of sound, the TCM-200DV will begin recording. Sony's Sony-Matic automatic recording level control will keep your recordings at one constant level. Play-back editing or transcribing becomes more useful with this feature. If the internal microphone doesn't support your recording needs, simply plug in an external mic into the mic jack.
An essential playback feature is the playback speed control. With this adjustment, you can adjust the speed between thirty percent of normal and negative fifteen percent of normal. This is a great tool for those transferring interviews or lectures. If you find yourself fighting to hear the cassette player via the built-in speaker, plug earphones into the recorder and your troubles will be lessened. In fact, Sony has installed a L/R monaural earphone jack for clear and unobstructed hearing.
There are two options in powering this recorder. The first is an optional AC adaptor. If batteries are more useful, use the required two AA batteries; these batteries will run for up to twenty-five hours. With the LED battery level indicator you can be watchful of remaining battery time. With automatic shut-off, you can be assured that you will not be wasting batteries needlessly.
Other features include: clear voice recording system, cue and review, pause switch, stop/pause release function. The recorder's color is silver.

Works great for a little while........2007-11-27
I used this product for about a year before it started giving me problems. To be honest I used the cassette recorder a LOT, sometimes 8-10 hours a day. So it breaking down in a year probably meant I had over 2000 hours of use on it. After that point though the cassettes stick and don't playback the recordings anymore. I think it's time for me to upgrade to a digital recorder so I can upload my recordings onto my computer.
Great Buy--Very Good Performance.......2007-11-19
I was looking for a cassette recorder to help in the preparation of the written minutes of a condo board meeting. There were 9 people seated around a horseshoe table in a large room. The recorder picked up all the voices and the sound and clarity were very good. I did also purchase the Electret Condenser Microphone that works with this recorder which I feel really enhanced the job it did. I found it very easy to use.
Had this for a year in terrible conditions... .......2007-11-05
I've used this recorder for nearly a year now, and I love it. It is sensitive enough to record voices at 50 yards away. And, it is still clear and crisp enough at close ranges.
It'll hold up in the toughest conditions and strains. For some of my recordings, I've had to be out in the woods or open fields during freezing weather or burning heat. The tapes always come out clear, clean, and enjoyable. (Nature recordings, outdoor events, races, etc.)
As a reporter, I used it for interviews. As a student, I used it for lectures, discussions, and notes. The 2X recording time is worth the price alone. Not only that, but if you have to listen to the full three hours that is possible on tape, but you don't want to drain the battery, there's a 3V adapter plugin at the bottom.
The tape deck has remained secure despite some drops. The deck heads are still smooth, and the gears haven't started squeaking, which is something that other recorders have done in the past.
Overall, if you need a tough, durable cassette recorder, this is the one to buy. I wouldn't buy any other now that I have this one. Sure, you get longer recording times with MP3 and MD recorders, but this is a bargain for what it is.
Oh, and it's great for paranormal investigations... but, that's at your own discretion.
Good Tape Recorder.......2007-10-06
This tape recorder works very well. It picks up multiple people in the room and will play back clearly. I had used another brand of tape recorder that stopped working after two uses. This one is much better. If you can't go digital, this is the tape recorder to buy.
The downside is that it does not come with a cord to plug it into the wall.
Double the price and you still get more than your monies worth.......2007-10-02
This recorder for the price paid is a real GIFT. Compact, excellent sound quality with a mic that goes well beyond expectations. Small enough to carry in your inside coat pocket. If you have the dlightest need, buy one!Sony TCM-200DV Cassette Recorder with Dual Power Source

Memory Helper.......2007-05-07
I bought this to keep in my car so I wouldn't have to try and write everytime I need to remember something while I'm driving. Unfortunately it's cumbersome and not easy to use if you're driving. It's OK but I wouldn't buy it unless you're looking for something inexpensive and not to be used in the car. It's probably fine for classroom use but for driving you would need something different.
Good for voice note, not that good for music practice.......2007-02-17
So-so for me.
I would have given it 5 stars if I use it only for voice note. It does what it is supposed to, and it does it well.
However, it didn't work well for my daughter's violin lesson. The idea was she records herself and/or her teacher, and later she plays along with the recorded thing for practice.
The problem is, the recorded notes sound always a bit higher than originally played on the instrument. I guess the tape speed is faster when playing back than when recording, for some reason. Maybe you wouldn't notice at first, but as soon as you try to play along with the tape it becomes apparent.
Probably I was hoping too much for an inexpensive microcasette recorder, though. I wouldn't blame the manufacturer.
Good performance for bargain price.......2007-01-25
Great deal -- recorder has 2 speeds, is easy to use, compact, and records/plays back well.
Olympus has NO quality control!!!!.......2006-06-19
I bought this Olympus recorder at a local electronics store (circuit city) and had to return the first one, since the record/playback head had a problem staying in physical contact with the tape. The playback volume would drop down in volume since the head was not snug against the tape during playback conditions.
The second one worked okay for about six months, then guess what happened? You've got it - the same tape contact problem that occurred with the first sample occurred with the second. This time the problem was even worse - the recorder failed to record adequately, so that nothing but noise was on the tape. I see that both items were made in China - where quality control is much poorer than either Japan or Korea, at least that's my personal experience.
While it worked, it was just "okay", nothing to brag about.
Does what I want it to! That's all that matters!.......2006-05-17
I am a musician, and I own an eight track digital recorder for completed musical ideas, but sometimes i wake up at night with a vocal or lyrical idea that i just don't want to forget. I can keep this handy little recorder by my bed, that way i won't forget my great ideas. This product does what i want it to do, it helps me get my ideas out so that I don't forget them the next day. I heard that the idea for the opening riff for "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones was recorded as Keith Richards awoke with an idea in his head. It has been said that all that could be heard on the rest of the tape is Keith snoring! lol!! this may not be that very recorder, but it'll do fine by me.

Just what I was looking for.......2007-08-31
My daughter loves these shoe box type recorders and they are hard to find. This is exactly what she was looking for.
Too cheap to last.......2007-03-25
I'm someone who just wants an easy-to-use recorder to conduct interviews, phone interviews, the latter purpose for which I have an adapter. Fine. I bought this recorder in July 2006. I've done somewhere between 15 to 20 hours of recording total on it. Other use includes playback and cueing the rewind - the usual. Well, here it is, March, 2007, and it ate a brand new tape right in the middle of an interview. The heads are clean; the tape was new (and the rest of the tapes in the batch are fine, so I don't think it was the tape). What I think, ultimately, is that this is a cheap recorder made in China where (judging from the other reviews and my own experience) is good....when it works. But obviously, the durability and reliability are questionable.
tape player.......2007-03-09
I like this little tape recorder.I use it for listening to books on tape while I work. The only thing I don't like about it is that it wasn't loud enough to hear over my industrial sewing machine, but with small speakers that I already had it's fine. That probably wouldn't be an issue for most people.I liked the price(under $25.)and how fast I recieved it.I'm sure I'll be using it for many years.
A reasonably-priced, durable recorder-player for everyday use........2007-02-03
I enjoy listening to audio books and music, but I didn't want to spend a lot on a large, fragile, sophisticated system. I just wanted a player I could take to any room in the house, plug in so I wouldn't have to spend a fortune on batteries, and I wanted to buy online from a reputable retailer. I went to Amazon.com because, as a long-time customer, I knew I could find a recorder-player that was reasonably priced, would arrive quickly, and would perform just as I expected. The Panasonic Shoebox has filled my needs perfectly and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it anyone wanting an inexpensive, reliable recorder-player.
Panasonic RQ2102 Shoe Box Recorder.......2007-01-06
Performs as advertised. Sturdy, excellent value for the price. I use it in an automobile that does not have a cassette player built in. It operates perfectly, and has a large enough speaker to sound fine. I listen to the spoken word, not for music. Powered from a small inverter, it works perfectly.

This product is just what I'm looking for. Easy to use, recording and playback is excellent, and very reliable. I highly recommend this Olympus Microcassette Recorder.
Auto-Reverse Sorely Missed.......2007-07-17
Right size, right weight, exceptional mic pick-up.Playback clear and distinct.Good volume.Having not purchased such a device in many years,I overlooked not insuring an "auto-reverse" feature.Rewind also exceptionally "slow". Then again, for the price, not much argument to be made.
i love it!!!.......2007-01-10
i bought 2. i sent one to my husband in iraq. we use them to tape messages for each other. he can hear our daughter, and our daughter can hear his voice, like when he records a story or a song from him. i dont think i could do without this product. its so easy to use too. ive bought recorders before, but they didnt meet my standards. thanks for this product.
This is a good product at a reasonable price.......2003-02-21
This tape recorder is perfect for recording class lectures or conducting field interviews for academic purposes. The only thing you have to watch is make sure you have it on the right tape speed. You have to use the higher quality speed if you want to hear anything in a classroom setting. If the speaker is close and you only want the lecture and none of the student comments or you are conducting an interview both speeds are fine. Overall a very fine purchase

Medeokre.......2007-11-28
I would like to say that for the amount that this product cost, it was worth it. However, there was an excessive amount of static picked up and I was not all that impressed. Fortunatley I will not be using it frequently, so if you plan to I would not recommend you buy this product.
Adequate for simple short recordings.......2007-11-17
If you want to record plain voice or voices for a short time in a situation where the voices are quite clear in a relatively small room, this unit will work fairly well for you. Under these circumstances the automatic level control in recording works well and the playback through the unit gives adequate intelligible fidelity even on the slower tape speed.
The problems with the unit are these:
When the tape runs out on a side there is no indication at all this has happened, no click, snap up of the recording button, etc. Unless you remember to flip the tape you will miss the remainder of what you are recording.
I used a "90" minutes microcassette but only get 90 minutes even on the slow speed, total both sides. I thought you could get 180 minutes or 3 hours at the slow speed.
The voice activated system didn't work for me. It doesn't start recording until about half way into the first sentence. It's too choppy.
The voices have to be near and present. It does not work well in a hall type of situation or larger room. I had better success at this with the old full size portable cassette machines.
The sound quality can be intelligible but at best it sounds like an older telephone.
All told I thought I could get a functional voice recorder for a small price, but will look now at the digital ones. I've been very impressed that digital cameras which take movies have incredibly good, (about FM quality) sound recording. If the digital units are anything like this they will be quite a bit better and worth the money, especially now that they are finally coming down in price.
not what i wanted!.......2007-11-04
I needed a micro cassette recorder that I could use it with headphones and with this one you cannot. When you plug in the headphones automatically the sound goes off and you can't hear anything you recorded quietly with headphones, without disturbing anybody.
micro cassette recorder.......2007-11-03
also another product to findwith a great price......handy not too big
slips into your pocket,good item
Nice unit.......2007-08-10
I bought this recorder to digitize some twenty-year-old microcassettes I recorded on a Panasonic during a trip to Europe. About ten years ago, I bought a Sony microcassette recorder to listen to the tapes again. As far as I can tell, the Coby sounds as good as either unit during playback. The plastic body looks cheap, and the action of the control buttons is not as smooth as those more expensive units, but the electronics seem to be just as good.
I recorded my voice on the Coby, and the playback sounded as good as the other units both through the speaker and through the earphone.
As far as reliability, I transfered eight hours of tape to the computer with no problems.

Very Effecient Delivery.......2007-07-26
After waiting on delivery from a manufacturer, we went to Amazon and received the product within the week. It works perfectly!
This is a good product.......2007-03-29
I do tape transcription several hours a day. I have used/abused the machine for over two years now and it is still running just fine. This is a good product at a reasonable price. I agree with another reviewer, they are getting hard to find in retail stores, so thank goodness for Amazon!
Great service/Fast and accurate.......2007-02-20
Thanks for filling my order in such a timely manner with a perfect new product. The Panasonic Transcriber is becoming hard to find in retail stores as well as being more expensive when I do find them. Thanks for your professional service!
The only machine I have ever needed........2006-10-14
I own this machine and have used it for the past 5-1/2 years. I transcribe several hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I have never had a single problem out of it. Our other transcriptionist uses this machine as well and has for the past several years. I would highly recommend the Panasonic RR-930.
Works very well while it works........2004-01-15
I have worked with quite a few of these transcribers over the years and this would be my least favorite. It works well for a while, but then the rewind and fast forward goes out on the foot pedal and then goes out on the machine itself. Normally transcribers last longer than these seem to. A co-worker has gone through 4 of them in 2 years. We keep asking administration to switch to a different brand, but they say these are cheaper. You get what you pay for, I guess.
Product Description
Here's the Sony "give and take" machine. The sleekly handsome M-2000 "takes" dictation, records meetings, interviews, even phone conversations, using convenient microcassettes in two speeds. Then it "gives" what's been recorded, playing it back for transcribing or just listening. The M-2000 has an automatic backspace that replays the last few seconds for transcribing confirmation, and variable playback speed for greater transcribing accuracy. Compact design needs little desk space. Foot control and listening device are included.
Customer Reviews:
Not so great transcriber.......2007-08-02
I've been transcribing with an Olympus for six years. I needed another machine, so I bought the Sony M-2000...not a great product for the money. Even if you have the volume turned all the way up to 10 (highest), you can't hear the person very well and there's a muffled quality, even with the tone on high. I can't believe the difference in the quality of sound between the two. I'm disappointed with the Sony, and I actually bought it because I thought Sony would be better! Ha!
Sony 2000 Transcriber.......2007-02-07
Excellent service delivering this product as I received it the next day!
Two things I'm not happy with:
Every time the peddle is depressed there is a very loud clicking sound from the machine which is very annoying--sometimes having to backup again and relisten to what was being said.
The other one is...even with the volume turned up at its highest, if the person dictating does not talk directly into their recorder, then it can be very difficult hearing them. My old machine would pick it up much better when the volume was turned up and 95% of the time would be able to figure out what was being dictated.
I rated it a four as no problem if dictator talks into their recorder other than the clicking of the peddle.
My girlfriend just loves it.......2007-01-04
I purchased this for my girlfriend for her birthday because she is completing her masters and needs it to transcribe interviews she's done for her thesis. She was previously using an older model and has fallen in love with this one, so far she is getting the job done twice as fast at a better quality

From a student's viewpoint.......2007-04-12
I actually liked this recorder. I've been using it to record lectures for my AP US history class and its working pretty great. Although, I do agree with the issue of the motor making a buzzing noise, though I can still hear my teacher pretty clearly.
Insultingly Awful.......2007-01-21
I bought this item with the intention of using it to record some of the lectures I attend. The sound quality is really awful- I can barely make out anything that was said. The main problem is that the motor that drives the tape is fairly loud and is located very near the microphone. In other words, there is a very load buzzing noise that you can't get rid of.
I feel like a fool for having spent my money on this P.o.S.
Reporter's Take.......2006-05-19
I bought this tape recorder less than a year ago and I am already in the market for another one. First of all, don't believe the product description. This would be terrible for recording lectures. Even if you are right up against your interview subject, if there is other noise in the room you will not pick his voice up clearly.
Recently, interviews have started to be cut off in the middle with the rest of the tape white noise.
And if you are outdoors, if there is a slight breeze, all you will hear is the roar of the wind. (But no voice.)
Yuck.
