Much BETTER than expected!.......2007-12-27
Well, the day finally came. My old Pioneer dvd player officially is DOA. Seven years later, it is now time to replace. Did lots of searching around for something similar to what I had. Biggest must for me from what I already had was the optical audio out. This was the least expensive model I could find with this option. Regardless of it being able to upscale dvds using the HDMI cable, this is was what I was looking for. I have a large collection of children's dvds and my two year old LOVES to help me get them out of the case and put them in the player. With the pioneer, it read every little finger print and scratch. The SONY reads right over a lot of the problems... even before I clean the dvd. Overall, I am very satisfied with this player and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for a replacement NON-BLU RAY player.
Plays like it should.......2007-12-25
I've only had it for one weekend, but I am happy with it, and have become familiar with all of the features. Learning curve on all of the setup options aren't too tough to figure out with the good printed manual.
I love the thin profile. It is only about 2" tall. Looks sharp and doesn't take up too much space in my crowded audio pier.
It does what it was made to do: it plays DVDs well. Picture is sharp on my 106" projection screen. As good or better than other players I've owned. Color is good and image is sharp and bright. Like other reviews have stated, it is a bit slow to load.
It is nice to have the option to use HDMI, especially since the player will output the 5.1 digital signal through the HDMI cable along with the video signal. Fewer wires are always good. Buy a cheap HDMI cable at amazon along with the unit rather than going to a store. HDMI cables are very overpriced at most brick and mortar stores (a decent cable should not be over ~$15). HDMI is full digital, not analog, so a signal is a signal. Monster cables don't matter with digital signals.
The player comes with the useless triple RCA yellow-red-white composite cable that is good only for very poor quality video. You will need to buy a good quality component cable or an HDMI cable.
I can't speak to the up-scaling because I'm using it with my 480p theatre projector. I didn't try it with my HD monitor. Honestly I can't imagine why it would be any better than letting the monitor/television upscale it for you. HD monitors upscale 480p signals fine.
The one thing I don't like is the same thing I don't like about every player I've ever owned. When DVDs end they return to the menu and repeat forever, while the motor continues to spin the disc. You only have to turn off the monitor and amplifier to make the mistake of allowing the thing to run for hours/days looping the menu over and over. Why manufacturers can't make machines that will shut down after a few repeats of the menu is beyond me (or allow the menu to exist in a small RAM chip where it doesn't have to spin the disc infinitely). This is how my last two players died. Make sure it is really off or it will die in no time.
A good player. Not a great value at $90, but not terrible. You can get a nearly identical Sony player without HDMI for $20-$30 less. Decide whether HDMI connectivity is worth $25 before you go with this one.
Good for now.......2007-12-24
This DVD player is a good value and has the HDMI jack which goes well with my Sony Bravia. I will wait to see who wins the DVD HD format (Blue Ray or HD/DVD) & then upgrade.
Great DVD player for the price.......2007-12-24
This is a great little DVD player that will upconvert (HDMI cable required) all by itself. It works very well with my harmony remote too. The best part is that it offers fiber-optic output for audio.. so for the first time I am getting true 5.1 surround instead of the onkyo make believe kind. The remote is a run of the mill sony device that hasnt been updated in about a decade. I dont use it (get a harmony, they are AWESOME)!
Why not 5 stars? its a bit on the slow side and the automatic resume function is not as easy to use as you might think. I dont expect (and I wouldnt use them..) cables to come with anything like this, so no points lost for that issue.
All in all, I like it and I would buy it again
Good functionalty, except for very poor controls.......2007-12-22
Like many components made nowadays, this unit is handsome, but not very functional in design. The controls are hidden, and are black, just like the entire front. The tiny symbols on the keys are invisible unless the room is well lighted and the viewer is very close, and the user must be above the level of the player to read the symbols, because they are only on the upward-facing surfaces.
In the dark, nothing at all is operable. There are not even any distinctive parts which one could feel by touch. So, all in all, this control set-up must have been designed by modern artists (as of the 1960s), not by engineers with any practical sense; and I guess that alternative designs were never tried out in practice.
There is a remote control (yes, another remote control to clutter your room), but it also does not work in the dark without a flashlight.
I guess that Sony should not be singled out for these failings, because most modern entertainment equipment is similarly designed to look good, but be impossible to use under normal operating conditions (i.e., in a darkened room). Ultimately, I guess that we tasteless and impractical customers are to blame.
This unit does play, and seems to work well. Once you get it going, you can then turn down the lights and watch, but be prepared to get up and run around turning on the lights if you wish to operate the controls.

The Sony Portable DVD Player.......2007-12-15
PROS: All of the accessories that come with this DVD player are great the remote is cool. The swivel screen is very cool to i like how you can play cds and mp3 and all that kind of goodness. The two headphone jacks, the a/v in and out options is nice with the hook up to a tv set or monitor is a great idea too.
CONS: This Machine is very good all round the only downside to it is the picture quality. What I mean by that is that the LCD screen is liney what i mean by that is that you can notice the vertical line (at least I do). The other thing that i noticed is that you have to have the screen in the direction of you otherwise it looks as though the picture is too dark or whatever.
Sony DVPFX810R.......2007-12-14
I love my sony DVPFX810R. The swivel screen is great. This versatile player is compatible with the following media formats: DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, and MP3 and I have had no problem with any of hte formats so far. My only complaint would be the battery life.
sony portable dvd player.......2007-12-07

A very good buy........2007-12-06
Bought this for xmass for my son and family to use on long trips. I will have to see how good it is after xmass. Came fast and looks very nice. Happy Holliday's.
***NOT IN STOCK***.......2007-12-02
This unit is not in stock and is not shipping. I have had my shipment delayed 4 times with no guarantee of receiving before Christmas. If you are ordering as a Christmas gift, do not order from Amazon. I have purchased many items from them and they have been terrible with this order and only after 4 delays they now tell me this item is backordered. I think it is only fair potential buyers know this before ordering. If I get my unit I will update this review. My original order was back on November 17th and I still do not have it and no date given after multiple discussions with customer service.
Product Description
The DVP-NS57P/B DVD player features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, providing sharper images for a better viewing experience. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Sony's Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include fast/slow playback with sound, and custom parental control.

new Sony DVD player .......2007-12-24
this DVD arrived within 2 days (surprise!), even the box was immaculate after shipping and the player can play my own newly recorded DVDs. I was very happy with this item and its good price.
Waste of Time & Money.......2007-12-19
Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD Player Black
I am the second reviewer to have opened a Sony DVP-NS57P/B Progressive Scan DVD player that did not work right out of the box because the player displays "Cannot play this disc." I have checked the region codes for consistency and all other steps recommended by the product manual to no avail. I have tried to play over 10 commercial DVDs as well as a few DVD-ROMS that work fine on other DVD players in my household and none work in this product.
Buyer beware, this DVD player was no bargain for me. An awful waste of time and money instead.
Best DVD Player under $50 I have found although NOT DIVX compatible.......2007-12-18
With the sole exception of NOT being DIVX compatible, this DVD perfectly met all my other needs and was under $50 too. The remote has nice buttons that stick up good and are found by ease with my fat fingers. Quality is good, with the sole exception that if you don't have the remote good luck using the buttons on the machine they are poorly labeled, flush set, and almost impossible to find. In my opinion they should have labeled them much better and made the buttons easier to press because lets face it, everyone loses their remote sooner or later.
Great deal, looks and works fine.......2007-12-08
Bought this to replace a Denon player that stopped working. This seems to work just as well, and it's cheaper. Option of showing photo.jpg's is a plus I hadn't factored in when I bought the unit.
Product Description
The DMR-EZ47 offers high image quality in both recording and playback, easy operation, and improved networking capabilities. It comes equipped with the HDMI terminal, which allows easy, single-cable connection to compatible equipment. The DMR-EZ47 also offers Panasonic's proprietary VIERA Link functions for linked operation of other AV devices, and these functions are now even more convenient. It is now possible to control an optional DIGA recorder, when connected to a Panasonic VIERA TV, using VIERA's remote control unit. This provides convenient control over frequently used functions by using only VIERA's remote. By pressing the VIERA Link button on the remote, a DIGA menu screen can be accessed directly from the VIERA Link menu screen, to make recording settings or play a DVD. By combining intelligent i/p Conversion and 1080p Up-Conversion technologies, DIGA's 1080p technology renders high-resolution 1080p images from DVD movies and TV broadcasts to compatible TVs. The Accutune high-precision analog/digital tuner achieves stable signal reception even under poor signal conditions, such as when signals are reflected by surrounding buildings. The Accutune Digital Tuner is a high-performance hybrid tuner capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. It uses a signal processor to effectively control noise and distortion, and its proprietary matching circuits allow it to transform and separate digital broadcasts into the appropriate digital or analog signals. With the built-in Digital Tuner, this will also allow you to record one digital broadcast program while watching a second program. The Tape input signal is automatically detected and optimized using Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) to provide an easy way to even more beautiful digital recordings from VHS tapes. Customer Reviews:
Great DVD Recorder/VCR Combo.......2007-12-26
This unit has completely lived up to our expectations. The quality of the play as well as the playback of recorded materials is excellent. If you're in the market for a DVD/VCR combo with a DVD recorder, then I would highly recommend this product.
Includes many key features, but misses a few basics.......2007-12-26
I bought my Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK after looking at Sony VX555 and comparable Toshibas. I was sold on the overall quality, built-in tuner, and ability to allegedly easily copy my old VHS tapes to DVD. If you price shop a bit, you can get this Panasonic for less money than the Sony or LG VCR/DVD combo competition, even less than the price Amazon has listed (for now).
The Panasonic was easy to hook up, works well, has a lot of features and is an overall good purchase. However, some of the basic functions you would want in a DVD player are either difficult to find, are not intuitive or don't exist.
A few examples: Obviously, most dvds are divided into chapters. Most players allow you to watch a chapter that seemlessly moves into the next chapter. For some reason, the dvd player does not allow you to rewind/reverse into the previous chapter. Each time I hit the
<
< button, it goes back to the beginning of the chapter you are watching, not into the end of the previous chapter and beyond. Very annoying.
If you are watching a dvd and hit the pause key, it will keep the image on the TV screen indefinately (and not go to a screen saver like most dvd players). For a plasma TV, this can easily cause a burn-in image on your screen. Annoying and potentially expensive. You have to hit "STOP" to get to the 'screen saver' and even then it is a still image with the same potential problem.
If you are watching a dvd and you want it to continually repeat [useful at parties where you want a concert or performance to repeat while entertaining], forget it. This unit will only let you repeat a "Chapter" or "Title." Not really even sure what the difference between the two are the way this unit functions, but if you want to repeat the entire "disk" (or the whole movie, etc.) I don't see how it will happen. Maybe someone out there will tell me. Sony, by contrast, has a Repeat A>B, Chapter, or disk feature.
The dvd player does not show "time remaining" on the display. It will show you how much time has elapsed in a chapter, but does not show you how much time the entire disk has left. A simple, but useful, function inexplicably omitted.
The memory card function is pretty straightforward. You insert your memory card and in a few moments, the unit recognizes it in place and opens a screen to shows the first image on the memory card. The problem, however, enters when you want to navigate through multiple photos (as most people would do). First, it takes an inordinate amount of time to load each photo. Then getting to the next grouping of pics seems impossible. Why not just load the pics (quickly) then show a set number on the screen (or fill the screen) and either allow you to hit "next" or "back" or play a slideshow with no other input? Panasonic makes it too complicated.
Perhaps I need to "practice" it more but when I attempted to burn a dvd from a VCR tape, it recorded only one hour of the 6-hour VHS tape. The instructions led me to believe that the unit would detect whether the dvd did not have enough space or that the vcr recording was not at the correct speed setting. Nope. After I 'finished' the dvd, it just cut off whatever didn't fit after an hour. Very frustrating, partly because now I guess I have to burn several dvds in trial and error to make sure I can burn all my old VHS tapes onto dvd... which is why I bought this unit.
Finally, I still don't know the value or function of the "submenu" other than to replicate what is already on the remote.
This is great unit if you want to upgrade your entertainment system with a new vcr, dvd, that can play/display your camera memory disk photos. It adequately combines three functions into one unit and does each one relatively well. However some key features that would make it really user-friendly and easy (and intuitive) to use are strangely missing. Sony does a better job of providing key capabilities with an intuitive layout and identifiable/logical features.
PROs: combines three important features (dvd, vcr, memory card viewing). Near univeral remote to control cable box channel, TV volume). Easy set up. Easy one-button switching between functions. Built-in tuner. Upgradeble/compatible with higher end systems/HDMI functions. Fast dvd reaction time, despite annoying audible clicks as it functions. Good fast-forward/reverse functions. In expensive compared to other units that do less.
CONs: Easy, intuitive, navigation and status features (e.g. time remaining) are lacking. Rewinding between dvd chapters is difficult. Disk repeat feature is missing. Memory card reading is slow and not easy to navigate between pictures. No dvd screen-saver when paused. Hit-or-miss recording of entire VHS tape to dvd. Really need to ask yourself if you have the patience to learn its quirky functions, and if you really need to burn dvds from VHS tape vs. just playing them independently.
Excellent Choice.......2007-12-18
Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK Up-Converting 1080p DVD-Recorder/VCR Combo with Built In Tuner
This product met all my expectations. Easy to use. I'm a 70 year old
female and I can understand the directions, which is no small feat. I
have copied some of my VHS tapes to DVD and they came out perfect.
Great for transferring home movies to DVD.......2007-12-17
My only reason for purchasing a DVD recorder was to transfer 8mm and VHS home movies to DVD and after reading various reviews on DVD recorders, I decided to purchase the Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK. This recorder is simple to to set up, simple to operate and the DVDs come out great. I have had the unit for about a month and transferred several VHS tapes to DVD +R media with terrific results.
So Many Problems--Where Do I Start?.......2007-12-17
Although this unit has a great set of features & capabilities, it has so many fundamental problems that it's given me nothing but headaches. I even bought a second unit to compare & found that it had *the same problems*! This is not a case of me getting unlucky & buying the 1 bad manufactured unit--these are flaws in the software & programming itself!
Many calls to Panasonic customer service (after looong waits & painful menu navigation & customer service reps who were not very helpful) resulted in 2 firmware upgrade discs being mailed to me in 8/07 & 11/07. They didn't fix the problems.
My unit is now at the local Panasonic authorized repair center, awaiting new parts, which will leave me without my player for about 3-4 weeks in total, if I get it back when they claim it will be done.
In no particular order, here are the problems:
1 - The unit freezes up frequently. I'll walk by, look at the clock, see that it's way off, press every single button on the unit & the remote to try to turn it on or get it to respond, but nothing happens. I have to unplug it & plug it back in to be able to use it again. It has missed recording so many scheduled TV shows because it froze up. The period of time between freezes ranges from a day to a month--totally random & inconsistent.
2 - While watchng DVDs, the big status window in the top right of my screen pops up occasionally, reminding me that I'm in DVD mode. Duh. This is very annoying. Sometimes it pops up every few minutes. Sometimes I can watch hours of movies with no pop up. Again, random.
3 - The SD card playback is sooooo slow that it's useless. I'm using a 4.0MP camera, with 2MB file size, and the time required to flip from picture to picture on the card makes a slideshow utterly impossible.
4 - The one-touch dubbing from VHS to DVD has given me huge headaches. First, it will abort the dubbing if you have a segment of static snow on your VHS in between the items on your tape. I'm trying to copy tapes of personal videos to DVD for archiving & easy access & sharing, but I have to babysit the machine to keep restarting the dubbing process.
5 - After dubbing a tape to DVD & following the directions carefully, I am unable to make the chapter manipulation menu appear. So, I'm stuck with chapter breaks every 8 minutes and cannot add/remove chapters, so I'm unable to make an easily-navigated DVD menu.
6 - After I figured out that I can manually stop my dubbing after each segment on my VHS tape, I had many hours invested & was on my way to making a DVD that had all the breaks in the correct locations to be able to generate a proper top menu. But then I came across one portion of my VHS tape where the machine refused to dub properly. 3.5 minutes into this section of tape (which is just like all the other sections, recorded on the same VCR), the unit stops recording, tells me that it's dividing the recording, rewinds the tape a bit, then starts recording a new DVD segment. This puts an illogical & unpleasant break in what is supposed to be continuous footage, and it adds an unnecessary chapter to the top menu. I tried this twice, with the same result. The manual shows that this should not happen.
7 - Unfortunately, unlike every other DVD player I've seen, the menu button on the remote pulls up a menu that lets you go to the DVD top menu. Usually the menu button on the remote just sends you to the disc's menu. Silly.
This product has given me so many headaches & made me *very* frustrated. When I get it back from the repair shop, I hope that Panasonic will give me some sort of refund, because I don't see how swapping out a circuit board will be able to fix what appears to be poor design & programming...but that's all the repair shop could recommend as a fix...
Product Description
The DVP-NC85H five-disc DVD player offers 720p/1080i upscaling through an HDMI connection (High Definition Multi Media Interface). HDMI allows the transfer of uncompressed digital audio and video signals to other HDMI equipped components, providing an uncompromised picture. It also features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, which delivers accurate and vivid images to the television. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include a 12bit/108MHz video DAC (digital to analog converter), and 24 bit/192KHz audio, providing high-quality video and audio processing for vivid images and crystal clear sound.
Amazon.com Product Description
Store hours upon hours of entertainment in Sony's DVP-NC85H/B five-disc carousel changer. This versatile unit plays DVDs and a variety of older disc formats, such as VCD and SVCD, as well as your favorite music CDs. And since the unit supports HDMI connections, you're sure to get the best picture possible.
HDMI Compatible
High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly to a digital television. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector.
An added benefit of connecting the DVP-NC85H/B to your set with HDMI is that the unit can "upscale" commercial DVDs, which are rendered at 480p resolution, to a digitally interpolated 720p resolution, which makes for a much sharper picture.
For analog sets, the DVP-NC85H/B includes a 108 MHz 12-bit digital-to-analog converter for sharp picture and clear action. It features composite, S-video and component video connectors, as well as optical digital, coaxial digital, and RCA analog audio outputs.
Precision Cinema Progressive
While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. This makes the picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because the technology uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle the differing pixel behavior. It also uses separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts.
Precision Drive 3 System
Sony's DVP-NC85H/B delivers excellent picture and sound quality--even from damaged discs. How? The unit's Precision Drive 3 system allows you to playback some DVDs that may have been damaged or warped without a degradation of picture quality. This feature comes in handy when watching rentals or other heavily used discs.
MP3 and JPEG File Playback
The DVP-NC85H/B plays MP3 sound files and JPEG photo files. Simply insert the disc and use the remote control to navigate through your folders to your files.
Customer Reviews:
I really love this player!.......2007-12-21
After over 40 hours of play time thus far, I just love this DVD player. Some might think it's slightly slow but I am not that impatient! I think it works extremely well and the only slight drawback is that it does make some mild mechanical noise while loading or waiting to be loaded. This is not a big deal at all and it stops as soon as a disc is loaded. It's totally a minor thing. I can't believe that I was able to get this fabulous 5 DISC SONY DVD Player for $120!! Merry Christmas to Me! ;-) (yeah!)
Great Picture, Great Sound & Easy To Use.......2007-12-12
I bought this unit to replace several CD players and a single disc DVD player. It is all I hoped it would be. I've got it hooked up to an HDTV and a Home Surround Sound System. Picture and sound quality are great. The system was easy to kook up. The manual is fairly straight forward. The multi disc feature makes it easy to load up on music and sit back and enjoy without the need to swap out discs. I'm not into random play, so negative comments in some other reviews had no impact on me. I bought it based on the features I knew I would use and wanted. The price also was quite good. I would highly recommend this unit until an HD version comes along that can match it.
Buy this instead of a CD changer.......2007-12-02
My Denon DCM-390 died after 3 years. Just up and died. (It had replaced Denon's earlier, cheaper model that had lasted for ten years (it was cd-r's that killed the beast).
When my first Denon died after 10 years, I upgraded. I trusted the brand. And HDCD! (woo hoo cares.) It was always glitchy, anyway.
3 years. $300. I paid $200 for the one that lasted 10 years!
So I painstaked over this purchase. I wanted a disc changer. Our Music stereo is completely separate from our DVD/5 channel surround sound setup (we don't do network television).
Why consider a DVD changer to replace your CD changer?
The higher bit-rate sampling? The cheaper cost? The wider compatibility? The flexibility when your dvd player finally dies?
What the hell, I thought, let's try it.
(Sorry Amazon) I bought this one directly from Sony. Refurbished for $95 with a 3 year replacement guarantee.
After my experience with the higher end (not super-high end, I know) Denon, I was more interested in how long will it last than how perfect will it sound.
Yippee! It sounds better than the Denon ever did. Even with the HDCD discs.
Sure, it takes longer to load--it acts more like a DVD player than a CD player--but, man, it sounds great through my Denon amp and Polk speakers. It sounds even better through headphones.
I was tempted, almost convinced that I needed to spend another $200 at least to get a quality CD changer (with a 1 year limited warranty). I was sure there must be a reason the Cd changers cost so much more than the DVD/CD changers. I'm glad I didn't.
I'll be happy if I never hook this thing up to a TV. It sounds great!
good dvd player.......2007-11-19
Good upscaling dvd player. A big improvement over my old non-progressive player. Haven't had any reliabilty issues yet, but only had for 2 months. I am enjoying this machine!
Works perfect as I expected.......2007-11-05
This player was a replacement for my 1992 Sony that was quite similar to this one. The 1992 worked well for years and had slowly passed away. The new one works perfectly as I expected. The controls are on a bevel slanted towards the top though and not as easy to see and use as my old Sony. But still a very very good product.

Tech Talk
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface).
This is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV or monitor.
Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive. This feature detects image changes at the pixel level versus other types that detect image changes at the scan line level. Separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image to achieve sharper backgrounds and moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.
SACD (Super Audio CD). Super Audio CD is a high-quality audio disc standard in which music is recorded in the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) format (where conventional CDs are recorded in the PCM format). Using a sampling frequency 64 times higher than PCM and with 1-bit quantization, the DSD format provides both a wide frequency range and a wide dynamic range across the audible frequency range, providing music reproduction that's extremely faithful to the original source.
| Sony's 3:2 Reverse Pulldown |
|
DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 reverse pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. |
|
Film and video use different numbers of frames
Conversion from 24 frames to 60 frames can cause motion blur, horizontal lines that flicker on and off, or an unnatural shimmer. |
|
3-2 pulldown
The traditional method for converting film images to video for television: Take one film frame and split it into three video frames. Then take another film frame and split it into two video frames. The video frames are classified as odd or even.
DVD players and other electronics then take the 60-frames-per-second video, and send it to a TV for viewing. |
|
3-2 reverse conversion
The process of converting 3-2 video back to movie-quality images at 24 frames per second. This allows the DVD player to combine the correct film frames, reproducing the film's original picture quality and texture. |
| Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive technology |
|
Precision Cinema Progressive technology uses a 12-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with high-bandwidth, 108 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player's picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. |

Best way to deal with growing DVD libraries.......2007-12-27
So, I started out with wall-mounted DVD racks. Then I moved on to floor standing racks. As my collection grew, eventually I ditched the cases and went to large folders to hold the disks. This worked really well, but after a while I found I could never find the disk I was looking for, and spent way too much of my life flipping through pages of disks.
And then I found this. For me, it has been absolutely terrific. I now have four of these inexpensive players holding 1600 discs. That's a lot of titles!
Each player (and remote) can be set to use one of three separate IR code sets, so you can use up to three of these players together in one system without worrying about them responding to commands sent to the others. They don't link together, so if you want to use three players, you'll need a receiver or switchbox with enough inputs to hook them all up as they act as separate DVD players.
They are really, really massive. I have a lot of space on my shelves, and they just barely fit. Check the measurements carefully and make sure you have a place to put it. A standard audio rack will probably not be big enough, unless you can put it on top of the rack. There is a bump that comes out of the left rear side of the player that houses the disc retrieval mechanism. So, the player is even deeper than it appears at first glance.
Also, after your player is loaded with disks, don't expect to move it again. A fully loaded player is a heavy thing, and shifting it around could cause the disks inside to dislodge. If that happens, you'll be opening it with a screwdriver to get the disks back in place. (Yep, I learned this one the hard way!)
I don't bother with the built-in disc explorer. Yes, you can enter in titles using a keyboard, and I did this at the beginning, but it just doesn't work very well for browsing through the titles. Mine never lost any of the information I entered in, but since I'm no longer using the player to keep track of that, I wouldn't really care if it did.
Instead, I use DVD Profiler software to keep track of the discs and their locations. It makes it easy to look for something to watch, and after I choose something it keeps track of where it is so I can watch it. This is a better solution than trying to use the changer to browse titles.
If you don't want to purchase software, a spreadsheet will work, and is still faster and easier than the built-in organizer. Plus, you can easily back up your title list when using software, which is a big advantage.
The one big flaw this player has is that it starts playing a disc when you first turn it on, every time. This doesn't sound like much, but it is very annoying.
To get around it, press Open while the player is off. It will turn on and open the door, and won't play the disk. You can then select the disk you want. This only works from the front panel, however.
To get around it from the remote, turn it on, wait about ten seconds, then press the disk explorer key. It will bring up the list of titles and stop playing the disk.
So, there are workarounds for the annoying things about the player. They are inexpensive, hold a lot of disks, and are a better solution to dealing with ever-growing DVD libraries than anything else.
Recommended.

Sony DVPCX995V 400-Disc DVD Mega Changer/Player
This is a terrific product. I bought 4 of them for myself and adult children and they arrived within 48 hours. We are all very happy with it.
Love it....easy to use when you find shortcuts.......2007-12-26
Actually, you don't have to load everything again just because you add a new disc. Allow the new disc to begin playing, hit stop, go to the folder, then you will be able to type in the info for the new disc, or add to what the machine read off of the new disc if applicable. Loading each time is way too time consuming and unnecessary. We just got this player and we love it.....we never bothered watching many of our DVD's before, now it is so easy to enjoy them. Another hint, make a spreadsheet of all of your DVD's and their slot #'s. Keep this handy when getting ready to view a DVD, then you don't have to scroll through everything to find what you want.....
Great investment.......2007-12-25
I've had this unit for about a year and half now and overall I'm really happy with it. I was a little concerned at first because of the reviews about losing all of the disc explorer information and scratching of the discs, but I have not experienced any of these problems. The only complaint I have with the unit is the load time for the discs, and the load time for the disc explorer (although in reality what difference does an extra 30 seconds really make!).
I originally had this dvd player hooked up via component cables, but it is now on an HDMI cable. Considering that I'm not a videophile in any sense of the word, I can't truly see much difference between the two, but overall the player puts out a very clear, sharp picture.
I would absolutely recommend this dvd player to anyone with a large dvd collection and a desire to keep the discs in good condition and archived, and I expect that another one will make its way into my home theater setup very soon.
one month with the DVPCX995V.......2007-12-24
I would like to correct a bit of misinformation in my first review of this product. In order to scan the folder inventory you must first set the tv-dvd selector to disc exploror position. you must then push the enter folder button which will bring up the titles you have entered in the folder. By pushing the up or down arrows and holding them down you can scan at the rate of 100 titles every 40-45 seconds. I don't know if this is recommended but it ddoes speed up the selection process.

Not Too Bad For What I Need.......2007-12-21
This DVD Recorder could get a little complicated if you start getting into the extra features. But for what I bought it for it works great. The only complaint that I have is that it takes forever to turn on. I guess that's what the quick start is for. I havent really had a chance to go through all of the features. The manual is pretty big, meaning there are lots of instructions for all of those features (I'll give Panasonic props for that). I was expecting the manual to be divided up into different languages but it's not. It's all in English. So, I guess whenever I have extra time after the holidays to read up on all the extra stuff I will come back to update my review. But for now if all you want to do is record programs onto DVD's to clear space on your Tivo, this is the product to go with. I have found that Panasonic usually puts out excellent products.
Not all its cracked up to be........2007-12-15
When I called panasonic to find out the unit's capabilities, a Panasonic sales rep said that still pictures could be recorded and played on CD's, DVD's, and DVD RAM's. This unit cannot play DVD's of still pictures. With CD's the unit will not play back recorded still pictures in the order recorded.
Very Disappointing..........2007-12-11
My old DMR-ES10 broke so I decided to buy an EZ27K. I do not need to rehash many of the complaints previously listed. The review by Calvin mirrors many of my experiences with this unit. I want to add that Panasonic has inexplicably removed some conveniences that users of previous models will miss.
Top of the list is the removal of the text preview window in the title naming area. You no longer have a window that shows what the title of your chapters look like on a finalized disc. If you have a title that is longer than one line you will not be able to see where your word splits and runs into the second or third line. This may seem small until you see the jumbled mess that your finalized disc titles look like. Additionally, they removed the convenient feature of memorizing titles to recall for future use. I had a list of frequently used words in my old recorder and now I have to type them every time. Not such a big thing but it is frustrating to lose a convenient feature like that unnecessarily. My third convenience complaint is the front display. The front display is very poor compared to previous models. At a minimum the display should, at all times, show the type of dvd in the unit, the record mode selected, the dvd time counter, and the state of the dvd (play, rec, stop, etc.). The display on the EZ27 only shows one of these things at a time with no feature for toggling through the others. If you want the information not shown on the front display, you have to press the "status" button on the remote and view it on your TV. Panasonic went from having one of the most informative front displays to the worst I have ever used. I looked at the manuals for all of their current models because I would have exchanged my EZ27 for one of the others if it had these features, but all of the current Panasonic models are this way.
I thought I could put up with some of the quirks that other reviewers have listed, but the things I just listed were the final straw for me. I don't have an HDMI TV so an older model works well for me. I returned my EZ27 to the store and bought a brand new DMR-ES15 on eBay for $70.
Glitchy Performance.......2007-11-30
I'm still a little nervous about this purchase. I have 'scheduled' about 6 programs to record. Only 3 of the 6 have actually recorded the program. I watched it closely the last time it failed. The set blinks as if it is starting to record, but the timer never starts ticking off the time, like it does when it records successfully. Hmmmm ... anyone's guess as to whether it will record that future program. When it does record, the picture is very good. I have a 1080 37" LCD television, and I had previously read that the upconversion is over-rated. I disagree. I have watched the same DVD on this new Panasonic with a HDMI connection, and it is a noticeable improvement over the same picture from my old Sony DVD player with the standard connection (no upconversion). However, if I had to do it over, I would probably wait for better technology. Or look into recording those occasional HD programs on the computer.
Great Recorder.......2007-11-16
My experience so far with this dvd recorder has been great. The interface is extremely easy to use and setup recordings. This is my 3rd unit of the later generation Panasonic recorders and all 3 have been great. The first one I got a couple of years ago was not good even after doing firmware updates. Even took it in for warranty repair where they replaced the drive but didn't solve the problems. But again, the last 3, even one that has the vcr combo have all been great and I would highly recommend these units now.

Help!!!.......2007-12-18
Ive seen some reviews on this and its all on the recording and tuner. I havent tried recording yet but the Tuner makes my analog Cable excellent even with just the Tv turned on and not the dvd recorder. However my problem is with playing DVDs. None of mine play. It says cant read disc. These are computer made as well as store bought. Any one have this problem and is there something I missed I need to hit. Honestly my 40 buck dvd players play everything no problem. Why do higher end ones always have problems playing all types of dvds? Thanks
Good, but could be better.......2007-12-11
I chose this recorder due to the good reviews it got for the tuner. I have a EDTV 42" Plasma monitor wanted a good picture when watching the game.
It has pretty decent functionality, the tuning of digital channels is a bit slow, some channels are fairly quick and others do take 4 or 5 seconds to tune in.
The picture does look good and the HD channels look especially good.
CONS:
Slow tuning on some channels
Aspect ratio is not consistent, I have to manually adjust the WIDE, NORMAL, FULL settings to get digital channels to look proper (may be my monitor)
Menu for editing channels is terrible, when I autotune off cable, it picks up about 80 digital channels, of which only 5 or 6 work, this forces you to manually delete unwanted channels, you don't get to see the channels when doing this and it is a tedious time consuming process.
Finally, when changing channels, there is a "delay" sometimes when passing digital channels, it will get "stuck" and try to catch up, which means if you tune into a digital channel and quickly press up or down, it takes a few seconds, then jumps around wildly to catch up. Also on occasion, some of the digital channels need to be switched back and forth to work.
Love it!.......2007-12-04
I bought this product after reviewing several DVD recorders. It does exactly what I wanted. I have several videos that I wanted to put onto DVD and this was easy to do with this product.
It is a little slow to start up, but that is a small price to pay for the wonderful DVDs it creates!
Panasonic DVD Recorder.......2007-11-26
An excellent product. Relatively easy to set up and very easy to use. This unit replaced a VCR, and we are very pleased with the result!
crapped out after 5 months.......2007-11-05
After 5 months this unit has started giving me errors on blank DVDs after I record 1 track, which effectively means it doesn't work anymore.
This is the second Panasonic DVD recorder I've owned. This first was the DMR E75V, which I bought about 3 years ago. Both of these units had good quality in the 4 hour mode - when they worked. It crapped out after 3 years and hundreds of discs, but was never 100%. It occasionally failed when finalizing the disc - about 5% of the time. It ultimately would not recognize the disc as the proper format, even though it was the proper disc. On the E75V Many of the discs I recorded from the 75 hung up also, maybe another 3%.
So, it's Deja VU all over again. I'd hoped they would have improved on the design over the past 3 years, and because of the good recording quality, I decided to try it again. I got burned. I guess I'll try another manufacturer this time.
