high failure rate.......2007-12-09
I just bought two spindles of these a couple weeks ago and just cracked into the first spindle. Out of the first 7 discs I tried only 2 actually burned. I gave up after getting 3 bads in a row. I've never had trouble like this with my DVD burner before. I plan to try to return both spindles.
fair price for fair/average quality.......2007-12-07
I bought these Sony DVD-Rs after not being able to find my preferred media, Fujifilm at a local Best Buy. All they had were DVD-Rs made in Taiwan which are nothing but junk based on my experience. I saw that these Sont DVD-Rs were made in Malaysia and bought them hoping for the best, not having experience with any media made in Malaysia. Well the first 4 attempts at burning disks turned out nothing but errors, 4 disks in the trash. I was pretty pissed and was ready to take these back to the store but then decided to make one last attempt and try burning at a slower speed than rated. (Mind you, I have burned over 700 DVD-Rs at 16x speed with no problem using Fujifilm DVD-Rs on my pioneer DL DVR burner.) I tried burning the next disk at 8x speed instead of the rated 16x, and the disk burned succesfully. So I hesitate recommending these unless you get a good price like I did. I paid $13 for this 50 pack at Best Buy, half what amazon is charging. At that price, I think the caveat of having to burn these at half their rated speed is a fair trade-off. But if you want true 16x rated quality disks I would stick with disks made in Japan, which are really difficult to come by these days.
Wouldn't work with my DVD burner.......2007-10-15
My DVD burner would not recognize any of these DVDs and I've never had a compatibility problem before. I've always had success with burning DVDs until I tried these...I had to return them.
Not very good dvd's.......2007-10-06
Half of the dvd's end up as coasters. Not good for video at all. I've tried 2 different burners & get the same problems. TDK & Memorex work a lot better for me.
reliable, affordable DVD-R media.......2007-08-18
Sony makes a very reliable blank DVD-R that can handle up to 4.7 GB of data. Moreover, these blank DVD-Rs are capable of recording data at speeds up to 16x. The data I record onto these lasts for years, proving the test of time. I have used these as data discs, discs to record video and discs to record audio. Great!
The DVD-R discs are compact and easy to store, although I would recommend storing them in slim jewel cases instead of paper sleeves. It's just better protection for your DVD-Rs that have data stored on them. While the discs are still blank, store them in the circular case on the spindle that they came in. Don't store these discs, burnt or blank, in rooms that become very hot; this causes damage to any brand of this type of disc and you could lose data over time.
There are two caveats that many other people note about any brand of this product: when you are burning the data onto the blank disc, don't be surprised if you see that the data is burning at a rate slower than 16x. This can happen if your burner doesn't have the capacity to burn faster, or it may be a quirk. I am not a professional so I cannot be certain of precisely what causes this phenomenon; but I assure you that the extra minute or two (tops) that you wait to get your DVD-R completed is worth the wait. In addition, DON'T write on these using Sharpie ink pens. The ink can seep through the top coating of the DVD-R disc and slowly but surely compromise your data--and you wouldn't want that, now would you? If you need to label the discs, label its' jewel case using a post-it note. At least that's what I do.
Overall, Sony blank DVD-R discs store data reliably over the years and I believe that an extra minute to burn the data onto the blank disc is well worth it in the event that it doesn't actually burn at 16x.
Use them in good health!

Works every time!.......2007-12-16
I love this product!
I'm not sure why this has only has a three star rating. I have burned over 150 DVD's in the last few months and haven't had a single Sony brand DVD fail. I have tried the other brands and receive failure rates up to 25% as well as playback issues on burned DVD movies. Now the only DVD-R's I will use are Sony. I use a LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive on Vista Professional.
Inadequate packaging.......2007-12-11
Whether it's Sony's fault for constructing a flimsy case, or Amazon's fault for inadequate wrapping, this product arrived with the case in shards. I put in a replacement order, and its condition upon arrival was worse. I'd hold off ordering this until one or the other or both are corrected.
Made in Taiwan........2007-11-27
I've always bought Sony blank media for my burners. Sony discs are fast, reliable, and made in Japan.....Quality stuff. I Just picked up a 100 pack and noticed on the label that it said made in Taiwan? Did Sony go low rent with their media? Needless to say I'm a little upset. Now anyone who burns media will tell you that Japanese manufactured discs are the way to go. I use to buy Memorex (Memosux) discs, burned fine, after 2 years I started to get data loss on my discs. After reading the forums on afterdawn I found out that cheap media, particularly stuff from China, is manufactured using the substandard dyes and other low quality materials. Basically the discs lose the data that's stored on them over time. DVD's are supposed to last 50 - 100 years, lets say you have the birth of your first child on a DVD disc, wouldn't it suck after a couple of years if the disc lost the data? This is why you buy quality media, Made in Japan stuff.
Now I don't know how Taiwan rates compared to China, but when I see cost cutting I see poor quality. Sony media is reliable, but I've been using the Japanese manufactured discs, these seem to be good but how long they last remains to be seen.
Buyer beware, if your looking for Japanese made media, look elsewhere. Taiyo Yuden discs are supposed to be the best, after I burn through these I guess I'll buy those.
Nothing Unusual .......2007-09-13
Have gone thru several of these spindles for business use. The tyipcal number of bad discs is pretty low...
say 5-10 for each set of 100. The average has been about 5 per 100. Of course reviewing the discs does not take into account the quality of your burner. I also have no idea if Sony makes their own discs or if they purchase from one of the other disc manufacturers... Welcome to the consumer shell game. At any rate, so far so good and the percentage of bad discs is reasonable.
Best DVD-Rs Available.......2007-09-11
I have had a lot of bad experiences with "cheap" DVDs offered as "loss leaders" at places like OfficeMax and Best Buy. Don't go cheap on DVDs. You will regret it.

Just like Memorex it says 16x but.............2007-02-09
When will I learn to not try these other brands that claim 16x capability just because they're on sale. DVD Identifier even listed 16x as possible but when I actually tried it, you guessed it.....coaster. 4x for stable recording. I mean it this time, it's Verbatim or nothing for me.

Blank DVD Discs.......2007-01-27
I was somewhat disappointed with my order because in the picture of this product (Sony DVD-R blank discs) it was my understanding and I thought I saw the picture showed that the speed was 8x. However, I received 16x. I did not realize this until I had opened one of the packages. So, I will keep it, but will be more cautious when ordering again.

Worked great for me.......2004-12-03
I bought this media, but in the 10-pack (cheaper that way).
I burned it in my generic DVD player, and have had absolutely
no problems. My sister can't play them in her DVD player,
but it's an older model that doesn't play any recordable
media (DVD-R or DVD+R). But at home, in my 3 players and
my computer, they play perfectly. I suspect that the other
reviewer that had such trouble with it was doing something
wrong.
Very Bad Media.......2004-03-26
I bought this Sony media because I thought it would be the most compatible with my Sony DRU-530A burner. Unfortunately, every single DVD-R in the pack could not be read by any DVD burner. Please stay away from Sony DVD-R, buy Memorex instead.
