Customer Reviews:
Decent HD Camcorder.......2007-09-30
I purchased my HC3 several weeks ago to film a family wedding. I didn't really intend on purchasing an HD camcorder, but I got a really good deal on a closeout and went for it.
Having shot quite a bit of VHS and 8mm tape in the past, the images from this camcorder are unbelievable. Even downgraded to DV format, I'm amazed at what this little camera can do. I'm also very impressed with the auto focus and white balance. I reprogrammed the small "manual" button to do AE-shift and it worked perfectly. Even in very strong backlight or high contrast shots I was able to quickly dial in the exposure. Very very good.
I also used the still image capture feature quite a bit. Despite being a camcorder, the images I got were almost as good as those taken with my small Casio EX-Z. However, they weren't nearly as good as the shots from my Canon G. My only complaint on the still imaging is a significant release delay between pushing the button and capturing the shot.
The only thing I don't like about the camcorder is the steadyshot feature. I was hoping for more. Long-zoom shots were not nearly as corrected as I had hoped. I don't have expereince with the Canon or other steadyshot models, so I can't compare. Still, I was hoping for more. If you're going to do a lot of long-zoom video with this camera, because of its size and low mass, you'll need a tripod or steadicam.
Low-light performance is average. I've seen better.
Also. I purchased the Sony Bluetooth wireless mic and videolight. These were great. I can't say enough good thinga about the wireless mic. It worked perfectly. The videolight is terrific for its size and weight. It won't give enough light to fill a room, but it does a great job for what it is.
Mini DV is Nearly R.I.P........2007-08-22
I must agree with an earlier reviewer, that this camcorder is not worth the asking price ..... especially now, since Mini DV seems to be a dying technology. Don't get me wrong; for what it is, the HC3 does a great job, with quality video and relatively easy operation. But the tape mechanism, as I've had to discover the hard way, is very delicate and it is getting harder to find people to service these machines ..... unless you want to send it directly to Sony and spend over $500. Ouch.
What happened in my case was, at one point the camera prompted me to insert a cleaning cassette for dirty heads. Never do this. I got one, it became stuck, and caused damage to the camera's tape eject mechanism. It ended up in the repair shop for nearly three months because, as they informed me, it is getting harder to acquire parts for these cameras, despite their being only 1.5 years old! One of the reasons for this, I believe, is the popularity of the newer DVD and hard drive recorders that are replacing Mini DV camcorders. Though the downside of that is compatibility issues with standard editing software, at least for now .... that's the technology race for you.
Anyway, I know this isn't really the best example of a product review. I was very happy with the little I was actually able to accomplish with this machine, but if you're going to spend this kind of money on a camcorder, I'd have to recommend one that captures to disc; it makes for better backup, and compared to the high maintenance of a tape transport-based unit, would definitely spare the user enormous expense and headaches on a device that will probably prove unreliable (not to mention obsolete) a year from now. Especially once the capture formats become compatible with non-linear editors.
NOT worth over $1000.......2007-08-16
I happened to get a great deal on this camera at $500. It has more than been worth it for that price, but there are several shortcomings that keep it from being worthy of the premium price range at most retailers, and the interests of mid to pro level videographers.
First of all in terms of manuel control, there is very little to be said. It is, for the most part, non-existent.
You can set the small wheel to adjust the "exposure" and the focus, but that is about it, its also very easy to jiggle the frame when using the wheel.
Apparentlly you can shut auto shutter off, but sadlly after doing so, you aren't given the ability to adjust the shutter speed.
White ballance can be set manually, but you will need to go into the extensive menues to do so, and the camera resets to auto each time it is turned off.
Low light situations are a problem for anyone that is going to be filming indoors whitout any extra lighting.
My personal most inconvenient problem with the camera is its complete lack of inputs. For me its a real shame because i need to do a lot of signal captures from different sources, which means I can't bring along this cam for a good amount of work. Also audio is a pain because of this, At the moment I'm having to record to minidisk, and even though the quality is better, allways having to sync up in the edit is becoming a bit of a pain.
Aside from all these things, this camera really does create wonderful images under the right conditions, and with its size, its incrediblly convenient if you want to get great shots without having to lug around a huge kit.
Great Camera, Needs Audio Help.......2007-05-22
Obviously Sony created this from the HC1 to appeal to more consumers that don't give a rip about having shotgun or wireless mics. I don't regret getting this. My son's birth is all in HD and looks tremendous. As I got better at editing, I started getting work from clients to do video (I am a web and graphic designer), so I immediately saw the need to have a camera with better audio functionality, so I purchased the HC1 as well, and now I use both...the HC3 for video only and as a backup camera. The HC3 is great to get started in videography, and hard to beat for great home movies. If you don't have a Mac with Final Cut (Express or Pro, it doesn't matter), then don't bother getting this camera. Get a nice DV camera that you can edit with some cheap $100 movie editing software. If you want to do it right, get a Mac, and everyone will think you are a friggin genious because your movies look so good.
Overall, a great camera. No motor noise with Sony's shotgun mics (I've tried them all). I will say that if you get this camera, you MUST MUST MUST get Sony's Bluetooth mic. AWESOME quality, and you can use for interviews and weddings. Really good.
Sony HDR-HC3.......2007-04-30
I was very pleased with this product. The ease of use, great video quality make it worth the high price tag. It also takes great still pics. I saved about $300 on Amazon and got my camera in 1 day, just in time for my kids Xmas program. With the MiniDV format your not bound to the Bluray format but you can make stunning high def DVDs if you invest in some software and a burner.

HDV Recording Format
From the innovators in camcorder technology, Sony's HDR-HC1 camcorder is the industry's smallest and lightest HDV1080i consu-er level camcorder and player. Now you can record all your memories in true high-definition video.
Switchable HDV/DV Format Recording
The HDR-HC1 is capable of recording and playing back both high definition and standard definition video recorded on a standard MiniDV cassette.
Real-Time HD Codec Engine
A Sony developed Real Time MPEG Encode/Decode system with reduced energy consumption and compact size to fit inside a personal camcorder. This system provides efficient MPEG2 compression and recording and playback of clear HD images at the same bit rate of the DV format, so that high-definition video can be recorded on the same cassettes as are used for MiniDV recording.
10x Optical/120x Digital Zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* Lens
From the authority in lens technology, the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens provides a high-quality 10x optical zoom which maintains image clarity and color while reducing glare and flare.
Zoom in and play back with the easy-to-use touch-screen display that features hybrid LCD technology for accurate viewing in bright light.
|
2.7-Inch (16:9) Hybrid Touch-Panel SwivelScreen LCD Display
Provides excellent viewing clarity with improved resolution. The 123K-pixel LCD display makes images sharp and detailed during playback or when monitoring recording. The hybrid LCD screen provides accurate viewing in sunlight or bright light, virtually eliminating the "washout" common with traditional LCD screens.
Super SteadyShot Image-Stabilization System
Picture-stabilization system uses motion sensors to detect and compensate for camera shake without compromising picture quality, as some other digital stabilization systems do.
Manual Zoom and Manual Focus Ring
Selectable zoom and focus ring provides precise and detailed control over the amount of zoom and the overall focus of the image with just a turn of the rings. Fast, intuitive framing when zooming and finely detailed focusing are easy with the natural feel of the rings.
Continuous recording and playback time for the HDR-HC1, as well as picture quality in still image mode.
|
Expanded Focus Indicator
The camera's LCD image is magnified, temporarily, up to four times its original size without any loss of distortion. This allows the user more finite control while focusing the camera for greater detail and clarity.
Cinematic Mode
Perfect for creating your own movie masterpieces, the HDR-HC1 Cinematic mode lends film-like (24 frames) effect to your recordings.
i.LINK2 DV Interface (IEEE1394)
A high speed bidirectional digital video/audio communication between two compatible devices equipped with an IEEE1394 interface, including camcorders, digital VCRs, and PCs.
Shot Transition
Allows for a smooth automatic scene transition. Settings for focus, zoom, iris, gain, shutter, and white balance can be set to the A/B button, and a smooth transition will take place according to the set time. This function enables the focus to gradually shift from the front of the screen to a deeper part of the screen. Thus the iris enables a smooth change of depth of field.
Tele Macro Function
Useful for shooting close-up shots without having the camcorder casting a shadow on the subject. Images shot in the Tele Macro Mode will have the subject properly focused with the background unfocused so that the subject stands out.
Active Interface Shoe
Provides a location directly on the camcorder on which to add optional accessories while providing power and two-way communication to those accessories.
Built-in Pop-up Intelligent Flash
For added clarity and detail when taking pictures in low-light situations, the built-in flash improves pictures and reducts shadows.
What's in the Box
HDR-HC1 HDV 1080i Handycam Camcorder, power adapter/in-camera charger (AC-L15), InfoLithium rechargeable battery (NP-FM50), wireless remote commander remote control (RMT-831), lens hood, lens cap, AV cable, component video cable, USB cable, shoulder strap, 16MB Memory Stick Duo Media.
Customer Reviews:
Marvelous camera.......2007-07-12
This model has been succeeded by newer ones; however, I found the quality of both movies and still photos to be superb. Transferring the video into the high definition software on my Mac was easy (the camera is one of relatively few with Firewire, IEEE 1394, or iLink - all the same - output that the high definition software requires), and the results are superb. Although I don't have a high definition DVD recorder, the quality of the standard DVDs I burned from the HD source were absolutely great.
Even the built in microphones were good. I recorded a brief concert by my brother, a Cathedral organist, using only the camera - the sound was marvelous. Yes, a studio could have done it better - but I had all I needed in the palm of my hand.
NOT a pro camcorder.......2006-12-07
First let me just say, this is NOT a pro camcorder!!!
WIth that said, this is one of the best investments I made for making memories. I had HDR-HC1 for about a year and used it moderately, and have been very happy with the results.
Pros: 1. Great picture.
2. Very light. Your arm will not get tired.
3. Easy to use. Just put tape in and you are ready.
4. Easy to connect to MacBook. Plug and play.
Cons. 1. Needs more zoom.
2. Build in mic not too great.
3. Short battery life.
4. Small view angle.
There are some drop outs on the video, but i think that is because I use "the" cheapest tapes I can find. Even so, I only noticed one drop in 12-14 tapes.
Good luck.
Almost perfect camera........2006-11-28
After reading that this was the "best of it's class" camcorder at camcorderinfo.com, as well as reading all the reviews I could find, I bought it. Now that I've had it for many months, some comments: It's a great camera, HD is awesome, and it has alot of features. Nothing to complain about other than 1) auto focus is problematic, especially in low-light, and 2) low-light quality isn't even as good as my 1999 Digital8 Sony was. Taping in Night Vision is almost useless as it goes out of focus so easily.
I'm still blown away by how great the day video looks when imported into my iMac. HDV is a pain on older computers (my 1.8 Ghz iMac G5 took 2-4x to import, but my Core 2 Duo imports realtime). Note, importing in iMovie involves reading in the HDV and converting it to an intermediate format -- higher end apps can import real-time and edit that (converting on the fly).
I do like the camera -- few complaints -- but I'm still irked that Sony uses a non-standard hotshoe. All my old Sony add-ons (IR lights, etc.) could not be used on this. But, the active hot show has great benefits (like the bluetooth mic that plugs up and gets power and audio from the hotshoe -- nice).
Anyone want a used Sony HD video camera?.......2006-11-12
Save your money. I've owned this camera for a little over a year and, quite frankly, I can't wait to put it on ebay and try something else.
The biggest challenge with the camera are it's little quirks that, over time, get in the way of filming. For example, Sony for some reason has chosen to put the button that switches between video, still photos (which are awful) and video playback right next the the record on/off switch. It is *so* easy to toggle it when preparing to shoot. And the next thing you know you're scrambling to get it back into video mode. And you've lost your shot.
The video camera has a an exceeedingly long start up time and a seemingly random length transition from standby to record. It could take a second or it could take ten seconds. And since this thing chews through battery life, I've always been reluctant to leave it on, for fear I'll end up with the dreaded "blinking battery" and no spares. So I struggle to capture the events (mostly high school games) that I bought it for. It pains me to think of how many times I've pressed record and then missed the great catch or kick- watching the word "Standby" flash in the viewfinder as the camera struggles to enter record mode.
Finally, the colors, even in bright light, look washed out to my eye. My old 3 CCD panasonic G4 looked *so much* better. I've tried adjusting the white balance, color balance... you name it, with limited success. But why does it have to be so hard just to get decent color? And the low light performance is even worse.
I could go on... I was sucked in by the idea of cheap HD and a leading edge product. Yes, the picture detail is better than standard DV, but that only matters if you can actually get the shot.
Great camera for the price.......2006-09-19
First of all, let me say that I am a 16 year old aspiring filmmaker. I used to use a little cheapo 1CCD camcorder that I got way back in 2002. The picture quality sucked, and last July it finally went caput and died on me. So, I went camera shopping for about 3 or 4 months.
Finally, late last November, I settled on the HDR-HC1. Considering my price range, and the fact that it shot in HD (and TRUE widescreen, for that matter), it seemed like the perfect camera for me at this stage in my career. So far, it has delivered for me even better than I expected.
Pros:
1. Finally! A camera with true widescreen!
2. Excellent picture quality. Sometimes I have to convert the HD video so it will fit on a DVD, but even then it looks absolutely stunning. It almost looks like film. I was extremely impressed.
3. It's small and lightweight. Easy transportation.
4. Manual focus ring works great. This is another thing that I was somewhat peeved on with my old camera. I like to make a lot of short films. Because of the zoom ring, I am able to put focus on certain aspects of the frame (an old movie technique that still works great). The only way that the ring could be better is if they labeled it with some markings.
Cons:
1. The battery life is pretty bad. 40 minutes doesn't do justice for a camera like this. For compensation, I bought the Sony NP-QM91D. It delivers me about 4 hours of battery life. Granted, it takes a while to charge, but it's worth 4 hours. The only drawback is that this battery will cost you an extra $100 dollars.
2. Yes, the camera is a little front heavy, but the extra extended battery will fix this.
3. The viewfinder. This is something that really ticks me off about this camera. I was really disappointed with Sony over this. With the big battery that you will need to purchase, your viewfinder will basically be rendered useless. The battery sticks out so much that, if you want to use the viewfinder, your nose and the battery will be spending a lot of time together. The least Sony could have done would have been to allow the viewfinder to extend out, but, sadly, this is not the case.
4. This camera doesn't perform the best in low light conditions. When you shoot in low light, the image becomes very grainy. This kind of disappoints me as I shoot a lot in very unpredictable lighting conditions.
5. The tape deck is located at the bottom of the camera which means that you have to turn the camera upside down to load and unload the tapes. In other words, you can't change tapes if the camera is on a tripod or connected to anything else while filming. This normally isn't a problem, but if you're shooting live on a tripod and your tape starts to run out, the only way to change it is to disconnect the camera from the tripod, change the tapes, and then reconnect it. This is a fairly time consuming process that will make you lose a substantial amount of footage, so be careful on how much tape your camera has left while filming.
Overall, I would definitely give this camera some consideration. For the price range, it works great.

Customer Reviews:
Sony HVL-HIRL Night Shot.......2007-12-22
This light connects to the hot shoe of the Sony HDR-CX7. It contains both the visible light, and the IR light for night shooting. Its a great accessory, that I dont leave home without. You dont want to find yourself in a situation without enough light.
The visible light itself provides a fair amount of light considering that it runs off of the camera battery. The illumination is only good for around 5 feet (+/- 3 feet). It is very compact, and easy to install(once you get the hang of it).
The IR portion has a intensity level switch that lets you control the amount of IR light illuminating the subject. It also has a setting to automatically turn on and off depending on the amount of light needed.
Its another great buy if you are looking for a visible and IR light in one for the range of shooting within a 5 to 8 foot radius.
Nice little light........2007-12-07
It takes a little practice to put in on the camcorder, but once you do it a few times, you will have no problem.
Runs off the camera battery so you don't have to worry about power for it. The Sony cameras have good low light performance so the regular light does a pretty good job. The night light function puts out infra red to go with the Sony NightShot setting.
Note that this is good in normal rooms or gatherings on your patio. Even a wedding hall. But it will not illuminate a stadium in either mode.
Good Video Light but very pricey.......2007-11-25
Im using this HVL HIRL video light with a Sony HC7. Nightshots do get enhanced brightness (though not very much brighter that the unaided HC7 nightshot capability). Having said that, I must admit that it illuminates a roughly 3 ft (1m) circle more of the surroundings than with an unaided HC7. The visible range video light is not any brighter than a fairly powerful spot light which one can get in Radio Shack / Auto parts retailers.
So all in all, its a good compact video light but I'd not want to pay anything more than 30-35$ (I shelled out $75+ since I had no clue of how useful it actually is). So my advice, just dont buy unless its below $35.
The Sony HVL-HIRL is awesome!.......2007-11-18
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R119UAL7SOBZMN I'm a member of a paranormal investigation group so IR nightshot is a must. What came with my camera (Sony HDR-HC5) was good but not as good as it could be with this attachment. I can already tell a drastic increase in the night shot capabilities. This is definitely recommended by me if you need to do anything in low light such as film paranormal anomolous activity or even just tape drunk uncle Jimmy running around the yard at night.
Here are product links to my setup to help you know what it works well with:

Versatile yet diminutive light.......2007-10-31
My first impression upon opening the box was that this light is quite small. I purchased it for use in wedding videography. It works well for short range (10-15') such as interviewing party guests. It's not intended to cover a long distance. The IR feature is a great extra. I also like the fact that it draws its power from the camcorder battery. Fewer batteries to charge and track simplifies my job.

Used this TeloConversion lens this year for deer season and was extremely please with its performance. At 500plus yards I could bring the deer in close enough to tell his horn size. Got some really great videos!

Product Description
Bring the audio in your videos to life with the ECM-HGZ1 shotgun microphone from Sony. Used with a compatible Handycam(R) camcorder, the ECM-HGZ1 synchronizes the audio to the camcorder's zoom for audio that is distinct for both modes. In telephoto mode, the microphone focuses on the audio straight ahead of it, isolating the subject matter. In wide-angle mode, the microphone broadens its recording range, so no sound occurring in the frame is missed. The ECM-HGZ1 is designed to work with your camcorder's Active Interface Shoe, so it is easy to connect and simple to use. It is powered by the camcorder, so no need for a separate battery. Included Accessories - Storage Pouch Materials - ABS Plastic / Color - Graphite Silver
Customer Reviews:
No Difference.......2007-10-15
There is no distict difference between using the regular built in camera microphone vs. the shotgun microphone. We tried it at every setting and it made absolutely no difference at all. Save your money.
Poor Quality All The Way Around.......2007-10-03
I was very disappointed with this mic. I wanted to be able to do interviews at a construction site. Even though we were several 100 yards away and there was little machinery running at the time, the audio was poor. I had a constant hiss in the audio. The mic is very light weight and feels cheap, almost like a "toy" mic. Since SONY makes sure you can use only their mics, you don't have much choice. I am thinking about getting their wireless mic, but after seeing the quaility of this one, I'm a little hesitant to buy another SONY mic.
Pretty good for what it is.......2007-06-10
I was looking to buy this microphone for my DCR-HC90 and after reading the reviews already on here, most people seemed to either give 1 one star saying it was useless or 5 stars saying it was great, which of course I found quite frustrating.
Anyway, now that I've got one and have played around with it, I'm quite happy with it. Using the 'gun' setting on the mic really does cut down on surrounding atmos etc which is what I was after, if you're looking to film an interview, even in a relatively noisy location, this should cut down a fair bit on everything other than the person you're pointing it at.
Of course this mic won't give you a completely professional result (which I think some people were expecting) - then again, this isn't a professional microphone. It is simply meant to be a step up from using the in-built mic - and it is.
The 'zoom' function I was not overly impressed with, and don't really use it. Before I even tried it I knew it was more of a gimmick than anything. Pure and simple, you're not going to get crisp, clean audio if the mic is a long way away from the audio source, simple as that. I've been using it mainly for interviews so far where the person is no more than about 5 or so meters from the camera - in this situation the mic works fine.
In regards to the quality of the audio itself, it's pretty much the same as the in-built mic (which I actually think is quite good for a cheap camera), and with the levels of all the surrounding noise brought right down I was quite happy with it.
All in all I am quite happy with this mic and think it is pretty good for what it is and how much it costs. It is definitely an improvement from the built in microphone and if you're looking to do basic interviews or things like that, for the price I think it's pretty good.
Finally, you would want to note (and this is where I got caught out) that this is a MONO mic that will record to the left channel only. You will have to duplicate the left channel in your editing software to have it coming out of both left and right channels in your finished product.
Cheers.
Sony ECM-HGZ1 with DCR-DVD505.......2006-10-29
This product didn't appear to add any appreciable sound benefit; the sound from the ECM-HGZ1 appears to be the same as that recorded with the native audio of the camera itself. I wish I had not bought it.
No Difference with a Sony DVD 203.......2006-06-12
We use our videocameras to tape preschool classrooms for observations. The hope was to use the microphone to isolate conversations.
To test the microphone. I went to a Noisy Starbucks, huge lines, moderate music and tons of conversations. I recorded on the video cameras mics, then used the zoom mic then used the gun feature. I aimed the microphone at the barista yelling out the coffee orders. In all instances, there was no difference in sound quality.
I then went to the Sony Style Store in the Mall and had her open a different Microphone and allowed her to install it. She read the package from a distance and then we listened to it in all three settings. We could not find any difference.
I checked the camera instructions and there was no setting for the external mic. Once the mic is attached and turned on, the external mic is suppose to override the on board mic.
I am still insearch for a gun mic for a digital camera. Many of the new camcorders with hard drives and DVD drives do not have a MIC input or Active Interface Shoe. I would rather want a MIC input so that I can use a more powerful mic rather than being at the mercy of Sony to create one for their shoe.
Overall, I am stuck. If I record something interesting I will probably have to try to enhance the audio portion while editing. (The camera shots great video)
