3 out of 5 stars A bit of a miss for audiobook lovers.......2007-12-11

There are some important considerations for audio book lovers that are unclear in the product description -- the lack of bookmarking and ebook support. I purchased this because I am a big audiobook fan and would rather have an audiobook playing throughout the house than music or tv. I am an Audible.com subscriber and have found that Sonos does handle Audible.com content well. However, I also have a significant collection of audiobooks in mp3 format (especially those not available on Audible such as the Harry Potter books).

Unfortuantely the Sonos player is missing the ability to bookmark non-Audible files -- a feature which is commonplace in mp3 players such as the Creative Zen (which offers bookmarking) and iPod (which remembers position on mp3 files). I've examined Sonos' support discussion forum and found that users have been requesting this feature for over a year now. Mp3 book owners should beware. You'll be spending a lot of time fast-forwarding and rewinding in order to find the spot where you left off.

Sonos also doesn't play the protected wma file ebooks you can download from NetLibrary.com (which is offered as a service by many local public libraries).

So the Sonos system is still lacking quite a bit of functionality desired by audio book lovers. Your only option is to download the book to your mp3 player, then hook the mp3 player to the Sonos line-in plug. However, I found this did not work well for several reasons. First, I had to always go to where I placed my mp3 player in order to pause or restart, and the volumne of the line-in seems considerably lower than what the Sonos can do by accessing the files directly. So even with my Creative Zen and Sonos cranked up as high as they will go, the volume is still too low for me.

In short, audio book lovers should take a second look before deciding if this will meet their needs. A simple set of remote speakers attached to your mp3 player may give you better functionality at about 1/10th the price.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing System.......2007-11-26

This is an amazingly effective product. This bundle had everything I needed to get started. I used the ZP100 with the living room sound system and tied in 2 sets of our door speakers with that player as well using a "speaker switch." I used the ZP80 with the system in the bedroom. The setup was done within 60 minutes with the bulk of the time spent installing the desktop software and indexing the 60 days of music that we have. We did purchase a cradle from Best Buy as it was definitely a missing component. At some point, we'll add on new zone players to extend the system to every room in the house and add a NAS device to hold all the music.

My only complaint is the high cost of each zone player. The cost is quite high but you do get a quality item that works without fail. We have had the controller unit lock up a few times but that problem was resolved very quickly by rebooting the device by holding down the mute and music buttons for a few seconds.

Overall, this is a high quality product and dramatically better than any other music distribution product I've tried.

5 out of 5 stars I love our Sonai - Sonoses?.......2007-10-19

My husband wanted to get the Sonos a couple of years ago and I was a bit skeptical. After a short time, I was convinced. I LOVE the Sonos system! We transferred our entire CD collection to hard disk and can access it all via the Sonos remote. There is also internet radio and having a subscription to Rhapsody, we are able to listen to just about anything we want to at any time. As you can see, I am a big fan.

I would also like to add, unlike most in-home systems you can easily take this one with you quite easily if you should have to move to another abode. It is also very versatile - if you decide you don't really need it in one room, you just move it to another. Worth the $ in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Add Rhapshody, and you have the best multi room system around.......2007-08-25

Perfect for me, as I have a surround sound receiver for one room, and need a powered amp to drive my outdoor speakers. Thank you Sonos for listening to your customers.

5 out of 5 stars Man you gotta get one of these!.......2007-07-12

Fantastic product. Pipe music wirelessly to every room in your house and when you're finished setting that up, send the tunes out to the garage and to the hot tub. I have 6 amps and plan on adding three more, so as you can see I'm hardly objective about the system. And why? Because it just works, and works perfectly. I have access to my entire hard-disked music library via the color remote and when I'm in the mood can stream music via internet radio or via Rhapsody etc. Let me cut this short by saying if you have the cash, this is the way to go. Easy set up, flawless operation. Couldn't ask for more.

The ZonePlayer 80
With the ZP80 you can wirelessly stream the music you have stored on your PC or Mac to your home audio equipment -- your home theater receiver, stereo system, powered speakers, and more. Just connect a ZP80 to any amplified audio device in any room, and that device is instantly and seamlessly part of your wireless music system. You can even play the same song in different rooms or different songs in different rooms.

With up to 32 ZP80s set up in your home, you can use the full-color Sonos Controller to wirelessly control all those devices from the palm of your hand. Sonos liberates the digital music that's stored on your PC, Mac or network attached storage (NAS) box and wirelessly streams it to any ZonePlayer in any room. You can access music stored on up to 16 devices on your home network, plus Internet radio, subscriptions to online audio services like Rhapsody and Audible.com, and even music coming from an external audio source, like your favorite CD player.

You can also use a ZP80 to retrofit a conventional multi-room audio system with home-run speakers or as a wireless extender to increase the wireless range of your Sonos system. No matter where or how you use the amazingly compact ZP80, the digital and analog outputs will deliver superior sound to every room. And because it's designed to minimize noise and distortion, the music you hear will sound virtually identical to the original.

The ZP80 features optical and coax digital outputs for superior audio quality, so it's ready to connect to your high-end home theater or stereo system. There's even an analog audio input for connecting a CD or MP3 player directly to the ZP80, and you can listen to that music on all the other ZonePlayers in your house.

Sonos In Depth
The ZP80 is just one part of a complete Sonos Digital Music System. To make your system complete, you'll also need the Sonos Controller, which is included with this bundle. With a wireless Sonos Controller in hand, you'll have instant access to all your digital music, plus Internet radio, subscriptions to online audio services, and even music from your favorite CD or MP3 player. Use the Sonos Controller to access your entire digital music collection and Internet radio from the palm of your hand. Turn off the upstairs music while you're downstairs. Change the song in the kitchen from the den. The controller's full-color 3.5-inch screen lets you see album art, browse playlists, get detailed track info, and more. To start listening, just pick a room, pick a song, and hit play. The Controller also allows you to queue the right tunes for the right moment; you can build, edit, and save playlists right from the palm of your hand.

With Sonos ZonePlayers in the rooms of your choice, you can play the same song in different rooms, or different songs in different rooms. As mentioned, you can have up to 32 Sonos ZonePlayers throughout your house -- from the bedroom to the backyard. Connect your first ZonePlayer to your router and all the others work wirelessly. To expand, purchase more ZP80s, or choose the ZP100, which features its own built-in amplifier. Or better yet, choose both for the ultimate in multi-room music.

If you choose to extend your system with a ZP100 you can use your own speakers with it, or connect a pair of Sonos SP100 Loudspeakers, which are aesthetically and acoustically designed to look great with your Sonos Digital Music System. You can also add more Sonos Controllers to your system to give more people in your house access to your music library.

Sonos Setup
You don't need to be a professional installer to set up a Sonos system, or a technical wizard to use it. Sonos was designed to work right out of the box. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection and a router to get started. Then, unpack your components, lay them out in your home, and the result will be music to your ears.

Software
Sonos offers desktop software for PC and Mac that's as simple to use as the Sonos controller. Designed with a user interface to accommodate a larger screen, the Sonos Desktop Controller software for PC and Mac will guide you through both set up and music sharing. It offers all the same functionality as the Sonos Controller, but instead of being in the palm of your hand, it's all on your desktop.

Use the software to set up your system, as well as music sharing. It also helps you set up music folders on your hard drive so they can be shared across all ZonePlayers. The software provides control of your Sonos Digital Music System from your desktop, and you can use it to add and edit your choice of Internet radio stations. <

Rhapsody and Sonos
Now you can hear more music, in more rooms with Sonos and Rhapsody, the #1-Rated Digital Music Service. Sonos connects directly to Rhapsody via the Web, so you don't have to download an application or even turn your PC on. Instead, all that music (millions of songs + ad-free radio) is instantly accessible from the palm of your hand—to play in any room you choose.

With the Sonos Controller you can browse the entire Rhapsody Music Guide, everything from Top Artists, Albums and Tracks to New Releases and editorial recommendations. You can even view track information and album art. And whenever a new song is released, it's in your hands and ready to play—in the bedroom, bathroom or backyard.

Rhapsody features
Instant, plug-and-play access to millions of songs and ad-free radio on your Sonos system

Free Rhapsody 30-day trial The minute you took your new Sonos® system out of the box or updated your software to Sonos v2.0, your free 30-day Rhapsody® Trial was ready to go. Now, it's your turn to start listening to all those songs, all over your house.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-08-19

I bought the Sonos as an easy way to get sound through our 100 year old house, but found that the wireless feature is only the starting point. The sound is excellent and the seamless integration with Rhapsody means that you can listen to "every record every recorded" at the click of the wheel.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Music System.......2007-08-18

I purchased this bundle about a year ago, and I have not regretted a single day of ownership. The system flawlessly delivers digital music throughout the entire house. The controller is intuitive and convenient. The key to this system is having a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that contains your music collection. Without one you are required to keep you PC on to deliver the music.

Sonos has delivered a number of music service trials over the past year. This would include trials for Rhapsody, Pandora, and most recently Sirius. The Sirius option is awesome. It is too bad that subscribe to XM, or I would be eligible to add the Sonos service for only $2.99/mo. Perhaps once the merger is approved.

A side bonus to the system is that it can deliver Internet capabilities to any room with a zone player. I have a zone player in my office, but I do not have an Ethernet jack. I can surf the web flawlessly using one of the two available network ports. The system uses AES encryption to protect wireless traffic.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic.......2007-03-31

I have tried to do this over the years with other products....with limited success. This one works perfectly. Very well engineered and thought out. A breeze to install. Rather exensive, but worh every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding.......2007-03-05

The ideal solution when you need a system that can be used by a technophobe. Sonos is by far the cheapest "whole house jukebox" system available. Established home automation vendors, who usually offer their wares through a network of custom installers, are scrambling to compete, because Sonos offers a system that is significantly better and easier to use than theirs at a fraction of the cost. Moreover, instead of requiring custom programming it's simple enough that it can be configured by anybody with a minimum of home networking experience.
It is more expensive than low-end network music players such as the Roku Soundbridge or the Slimdevices Squeezebox. Still, don't forget you're getting two zone players out of the bundle deal, and a remote that will make just about any gadget freak green with envy. What other system will let you browse your whole music collection (including album art) effortlessly from the comfort of your sofa? It's so intuitive that your most technophobic friend will be able to use it in under five minutes (it might be difficult to get them to give it up!)
It's great to pass it around at a party and get people to add their favorite tunes to the play queue.

Note that one limitation of the Sonos system is that the first box has to be connected to the wired Ethernet LAN. Since it was not practical in my case, I used a Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP wireless bridge (available at Amazon) to hook it up to the wireless home LAN. It was easy to configure and works great.

A seldom mentioned feature of the Sonos boxes is the audio input; you can use it to distribute the audio from a satellite radio, for instance. The alarm clocks are also very useful, and internet radio is great. You can also get a subscription with the Harmony internet radio service if you'd like (Sonos comes with a free trial subscription).

Despite its apparently high price, the Sonos system is an amazing bargain, because it's so feature-rich, extensible and easy to use. And if you have any technophobes in your house, there just isn't any other choice, so what are you waiting for? The only question is, wich combo do you want, the ZP-80 or the ZP-100?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2007-02-06

After using the Roku system for a few years, I upgraded to the Sonos. WOW, it was like going from a Pinto to a Bently. The Sonos product is top of the line, easy to use and setup and the controller is impressive and powerfull. The wireless capability is more than adequate.

The only caviat is that this won't play protected AAC files from iTunes, but we knwe that Apple wasn't going to let that happen anyway.

I would give this product line 10 stars if the option was available.
