I just ordered this and tried it out using my laptop and large screen projection TV in my subdivision clubhouse. It is the perfect solution to conducting training and powerpoint presentations without the need for an expensive PC projector. Easy setup and operation. Only complaint is the short monitor cable and composite cable. I highly recommend this product.
Not exceptional for Video or Games.......2003-04-16
This is an ok video converter, but if you're looking to play video on your TV and have it look the same as it would on your computer, you'd probably be better off getting a nice video card with a TV-OUT port.(or just moving your monitor into the living room) The recommended use on the Startech website is presentations, which it would excel in if you have a large television. The problem with playing video on your PC to your TV it is that the picture 'folds' over itself every once in a while, like a flipbook with a couple pages missing every once in a while. The length of the cords that they include also remind me that I bought this thing for all the wrong reasons. Your television must only be six feet away from your computer(which is not true in the average home). The remote included is tiny(about the size of a letter opener) and the buttons are not easy to press. And believe me, you'll need the remote: every time you plug it in you need to adjust the V and H positions and stretches. Also it is a weak infrared remote, meaning you must practically be 5 feet away for it to give a signal. And forget about putting sound through, it's only for video. Also, when you hook your monitor up through the monitor port on this thing, it gives out a very degraded signal that makes your monitor look like it has a thin layer of fog and bars in front of it. But for the price its ok: it gives out crisp, full color conversions on your television and the fact that you need no software is a huge plus.

decent video for 70 bucks.......2007-05-03
I bought this converter for an old pc with vga out to a new hdtv. Works good, many finite adjustments, although none are perfect. YOU WILL NOT GET NEAR HDTV QUALITY WITH THIS UNIT. It uses composite outputs. Beats s-video. I am using on a new sony 50" lcd projection. I've dialed the text settings, but can't quite get it to where its actually easily legible from 6-8 ft. away on alot of web pages. Strangely enough, videos look decent. Unit carries no audio. Comes with small remote control which works well for vsize, hsize, vcent, hcent, power, others. When computer is restarted, you have to (usually) restart and re-calibrate the unit, which only takes a few seconds once youve got it down. If you do alot of reading, you might want to pass. Better for occasional use. I still use a standard desktop monitor for intensive reading. Easy hook up. Gives basic computer functionality to tv. period.
don't waste your time on this converter.......2006-11-11
I have IBM ThinkPad laptop T40 which I wanted to use together w/ the converter. For me this combination did not work - the converter did not transfer picture to TV in 90% of cases when I restarted my laptop. Even when it worked, I was not able to resize picture on TV.

Can not get the device to output useable HDTV, only a standard NTSC signal. Very disappointing. No user manual, so I am reduced to pushing buttons and hoping I stumble on the correct settings. Hope to get a response from KWorld.

This unit is junk! In my application, I have a video card with an S video output and a TV with S video as well as hi def component inputs. I bought this unit hoping to improve the S video picture quality I already had. The picture quality was actually worse than the S video hook up. I went thru all of the menus, played with all the settings and couldn't get it to appear better than what I already had with my S video connection. The picture was bowed inward on all 4 sides, the colors were all off, the resolution got no better despite using the component video hook ups. I returned it first thing the following morning. And I've been chomping at the bit to post MY opinion on it and tell others not to be duped.
If your PC includes an S video out on the video card, save yourself $100 and use that. If your PC has the ability to upgrade the video card, save yourself $50 and get one with S video output (around $50 if you look hard enough) and use that.
The ONLY applications where I can see this unit being beneficial is if you don't have an S video input on your TV, forcing you to use a composite or an RF connection (this unit supports any of the 4 types of hook ups) on your TV and / or your pc does not have an AGP slot to support a non-proprietary video card upgrade that includes S video.
I read all the reviews I could find on this unit before making a purchase myself. Although, I didn't find many. Most good, a couple bad... all I can say is the good ones must not have had S video.
Only buy this product if it's your ONLY option!!

I wouldn't recommend anybody to buy this item. I tried this item on all my TV and is very poor quality picture. Is very difficult to read any text on the screen. You have to use the zoom option when ever you want to read the text. Even my Son don't like it, when I attached his computer to his TV. It takes awhile to adjust all the options to really get it right and believe me you won't get it the way you wanted. I'm a technician and I deal with video and sound and this item does not perform as advertise.

The other reviewers did not read the first sentence in the description. Your computer MUST have TV-Out capability for this cable to work, which is rare. You cannot simply connect this cable between your computer and TV and expect to get a signal. It's unfortunate that this product got so many 1-stars due to customers not doing their homework.
This cable works great if your computer has the TV-Out capability but if it does not, then you must purchase a VGA to S-video converter in the $30-60 range.
Bad cables and worse video signal.......2007-12-04
I bought this cable to connect a media station PC to my television, but after hooking everything up (and checking to make sure that the cables were plugged in properly), I got a "no signal detected" message from my television.
I connected the PC to a normal monitor through VGA cables and had no problems with the display, so I decided to hook it up to a much older TV, again through the converter. The "picture" didn't even resemble static. It was totally unusable, squashed, scrolling, black and white video.
These sorts of cables used to come with almost every video card sold in a retail store, so I'm not sure what's wrong with the design here. Avoid this product at all costs!
DOES NOT WORK FOR XBOX.......2007-10-16
I bought this product as an experiment, about 90% sure that it would not work. I wanted to connect my XBOX to a 22" Dell Widescreen monitor. The monitor does not recognize the signal at all, as I expected. I have not tested to see if it works as it says, as an adaptor from VGA to RCA/SVID.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! I used it to try to connect my laptop to TV, and all that comes out is static! Save your money. I tried with 2 tvs and 3 different video cables, all with the same result, good money down the drain.

Gets The Job Done.......2007-12-21
I bought this device so I could use my 42" Plasma as a monitor in my front room. I hooked the unit up exactly as the easy to read instructions outlined using the provided S-Video cable and it worked the first time. I did have to make some adjustments to the screen setting for size and sharpness but that was to be expected. The only complaint I have is that when I change inputs on the TV and then come back to the input that the converter is attached to I have to adjust the screen size one tick on the converter so that the PC tool bar shows up at the bottom. The picture is good though. I did watched a movie from Netflix Watch it Now and it looked pretty good. It was not HD quality of course but it was clear and crisp with no wierd anomallies, or grainyness. I was looking at the more expensive converters, but thought I would give this one a chance first. So far it was a good choice.

I was looking to play some video games from my laptop to my TV. I'm pretty computer and electronic savvy with things like this.... However, right when I got it, I set it up, turned it on and..... Nothing but the color lines of the converter... and flickering of my laptop screen (which was extremely hard to make out), The display is not good for the weak of stomach... I tried to adjust the screen on the converter to clear it up but that didn't make any difference... There was no software that came with this, suppose to be plug and play.... Well for me its plug and flicker... I can't believe I wasted my money on this thing. Maybe it's because it's a laptop. I'll try with my main PC and some other systems I have to see if it works there and do a 2nd review. So far for the LAPTOP, (which is what I wanted it to work on), this product and a complete waste of money, and may just sit in the closet as a dust collector.

I had an ealier low rating for this product, well I did finally get the product to work and it looks good on the television screen. Here's what you'll need to do. Set your laptop or PC to the 800X600 resolution next plug in the converter, make sure all other cables are pluged in as well (and definately remember to plug in the USB cable into the laptop or PC that you are using, otherwise it WON'T work), then reboot your laptop/PC. After your PC reboots the screen should display on your Television. Hope that helps all those that had tons of trouble with this. But that is what I did and it's working as designed. No software needed just do the things above and you will be set. Other wise goole "TV OUT" and your PC/laptop brand and it should give you some links on how to setup your PC to display out to a TV using a converter box.

It works. Iamge quality is acceptable. However, it took me a little bit time to figure out. The product design is not very ergonomic. VGA INPUT and VGA OUTPUT port look exactly the same. Be aware that the color of the VGA cord, which is inclued in the package, doesn't match. SUPPOSED TO BE BLUE (CORD) TO BLUE (VGA PORT). IN FACT, IT IS BLUE TO BLACK. Plus, for who wants to watch video on TV, your video card setting is crucial, especially the ATI users. This converter shoud work for any kind of video card if you get the right setting. Enjoy your big screen.

To say this converter does not work would be a lie. It works, unfortunately the one I got did not work as effectively as one would hope! First of all, it is quite easy to connect, no complaints there. However, once it was connected the picture was awful! Actually, I wasn't even sure there was a picture on my television, it was very grainy, one would have to squint to imagine a picture, and after tweaking, and I mean a whole lot of tweaking, I saw a semblance of what was on my computer monitor on the television. The only trouble was that only half of the computer monitor was captured and seen on the television, and from time to time the picture goes out and the tweaking had to be done again. So in the end, the converter is now collecting dust in a corner and not being used because it's too much of a hassle to get a good decent picture from it.

I bought this PC to TV convertor to watch DVD movies from my laptop and use my TV for occasional browsing. You would probably need an audio cable with this product to connect to your TV, otherwise use good Laptop speakers. This product delivers what it says. I bought a wireless keyboard immediately after this product. Will recommend this product to my friends

This item helped me in connecting my lpatop with only VGA card to my TV. I normally use this to watch movie and i dont see any color related issues. Only problem that faced was during the initial set up. Had to try all the Graphics property combination to make it work. Need to do some adjustments with the buttons provided.
On the price part i think it is expensive. The cables provided are very short.

TV signals and VGA monitors are incompatible with each other. The basic fundamentals are theoretically similar, but in application they are very different. There is a big difference in the scanning rates, CRT phosphor pitch, and overall design specs. Its normal the image or color may get little distorted.
