Be Aware Before You Buy.......2007-10-01
My Desktop is only a 140 GB drive, so this 320 GB machine sounded great for the price. Once again, as an illiterate geek, I was disappointed to find NO instructions except how to plug it in. When I did get the main window to open, I used "SETUP" to install the software. But this is no simple 'drag and drop' situation. It also comes with two (1 month with option to buy) programs called Memeo Synch and Memeo Backup. This just made it all the more confusing. At the present time I have download about 19 GB of information, but it took literally more than 24 hours. I expected to just install and walk away with everything installed in less than 3-4 hours. If you are familiar with computer backup systems, you'll probably love this, but if I can't figure it out in the next few days, I'm taking it back.

I've had this external drive for about a month now, and it works great. When I first receive it, I used the pre loaded backup software that comes on it to setup nightly backups of my PC. That took about ten minutes. I highly recomend this product.
Problems also with Windows.......2007-06-10
After I connected this device to my computer I discovered it was not formatted. The setup and backup software was supposedly on the unformatted hard drive, no CD is supplied.
I contacted customer service by email (the "Australian" phone support turned out to be a Singapore number) and I was advised to download the software from the web site.
I did so, only to find it did not work--it was for the 500 gb machine.
I emailed support again, I'm still waiting for a response.
I ended up formatting it using Windows and downloaded a freeware backup program, which did not work. I downloaded another one, Cobian, which does work.
Too early to say how good the drive is, only time will tell.
The one star for the setup experience.
It took around 90 minutes for a 60 gb backup on USB2, and I will consider getting an eSATA card and cable.

I bought this drive because it was priced well for its capacity. I tried installing it on my Mac according to the quick install guide included with it. First I tried using Firewire, but the drive never mounted, nor did the drive turn on automatically as the directions said it would. Then I tried using USB and the same thing happened: nothing. Before returning it, I tried using the company's support page. There are a lot of knowledge base answers but nothing I could find pertaining to my problem. I then tried contacting them using their question form. After filling everything out and having paid special attention to all the required items, I was greeted with the message that my submission had failed. I tried to go back and correct whatever the problem was, but alas that was impossible. I will not be purchasing this company's products in the future.

EXCELLENT DATA STORAGE!.......2007-12-17
I have three of these: a 320GB Essential (the first one I bought about 2 years ago), a 500GB Premium and (lately) a 750GB Professional. (I avoided the 1TB version due to the universally bad reviews it received). Their different colored lights help me keep my files separate and organized - and always backed up.
I have mostly good things to say about all of them: they are stable, silent enough to operate at home and can be formated to either Fat32 or NTFS to suit one's needs. I formated to NTFS before using it (but make sure to back up the contained files and utilities first).
My only complain is that when more than half-full, it takes some minutes for my PC to verify all the files contained and be able to use them. Utilizing the FireWire only slightly improves the time delay.
Regarding the complains about crashes and data losses: there is of course the possibility of this to happen to any data storage medium. Had I not had a flawless experience with my previous MY BOOKs, these concerns would had prevented me from expanding my...library. However, keep in mind that this is NOT a PORTABLE External HDD. It does not contain a solid-state flash drive, but instead a regular HardDisk Drive. So, moving it from place to place, shaking it (and even carrying it in a backpack) may not be the best way to ensure smooth operation.
On this note, can anyone trust any delivery service or company NOT to shake or drop it during shipment?

I have had my MY Book for over 6 months. A review done when a product is fresh out of the box doesn't tell you much about the longevity of the machine or how it functions down the road. I was SO EXCITED to get this. I have tons of photos and video that I wanted to back up and remove from my computer. Thankfully I backed all of my photos up on DVDs too. They are gone from the external drive. One day there was a cyclical redundancy thing going on and I could not access my folder. Since then I have had other issues, many that people have mentioned already. I really don't want to have to go out and get another external drive, but this one truly is not reliable. Half the time I go to access it my computer thinks it is not there (both with firewire & USB) There are disk write failures all of the time and I never know when the drive will actually work.

Had this for about 7 months and thought everything was fine. Then my PC wouldn't recognize it. Then it started making clunking noises. And that was it. I tried the home remedies (overnight in the freezer) but it never came back. I found out just how stupid I was. I had stuff stored on it that was not backed up anywhere. Cost me $1300 to get my data back from a data recovery service. So if you buy this drive, don't count on it.

Hate not to be part of the unanimous 5-star refrain, but the problem with the glowing reviews for this low priced cable is the concealed charge (you'll notice that one seller has the cable listed at 1 cent with a minimum $4.98 shipping fee). At least with Amazon Prime there's nothing deceptive, no pretense at "giving away" the item. Also, if you go to a cable sold directly by (rather than through) Amazon, you'll pay a couple of extra bucks but have a greater selection. Why settle for a 6-foot cable when all you need is 2 or 3? Why settle for grey-colored cable when in your heart you know you want black? Or silver-colored in place of the psychological assurance (if not superior performance) of gold-plated connectors?

I was always a bit suspicious of the quality or the original dock that Apple includes with the Shuffle. Its cheaply made and I've heard stories of bent clips on the Shuffle that makes docking it impossible, as it will no longer fit in the dock. This one doesn't have any of the liabilities that the original has. Its better constructed and the input jack plugs directly into the headphone slot w/o need for a form fitting dock as with the original. Best of all, is the price. While the substandard Apple replacement is $29 plus shipping, this one shipped is around $5. The only issue I have with this transaction is that I wish I would have bought two, so I can have a backup.

The USB Adapter for the iPod Shuffle fills a product need created by Apple. The reality is a similar adapter should have been included with the Shuffle instead of the mini-doc. Or, a standard USB port connection should have been used. Either way, this is a handy accessory for your iPod shuffle, and it works with both 2nd and 3rd generation models.
Pros
This unit is not only smaller than the Apple shuffle dock, it's also cheaper. It's very convenient to have as a backup. Price wise this adapter tends to be the best at less than $0.50.
Cons
Clearly this is a low end accessory. Failure rates are inevitable, so at these prices it pays to buy a few to have a backup. Additionally, secondary USB ports and USB hubs may not work with this one, so you have to use a main port.
This unit is worth a try. If you have the Shuffle, though, it pays to get some version of this adapter.

Good for the price of 5 $ including shipping. Delivery exceptionally fast. Arrived in 3 days. Only problem is that it fits a bit loose into the USB port of my new laptop. Had to press 2-3 times to make sure contact is right.
Worked fine with iTunes software for Windows Vista machine. Charging and data transfer pretty fast.
Great replacement for your dock!.......2007-06-05
was rather surprised when the dock that came with my iPod shuffle broke on me. Even more surprised when I saw that Apple wanted $29.95 to replace it. Heck, that's almost half of what the Shuffle cost to begin with. And if the first one broke so easy I don't want to take a chance.
So I surfed around and saw this handy dandy thing. I got it pretty quick and it works like a charm! And what's better, you can carry this around with you much easier than the Apple dock and it's not going to die on me.

This SD card reader is perfect for what it does and for the price! I use a PDA and laptop constantly and interchangably. The PDA takes SD cards. I use my SD cards and this USB reader as a flash drive so that I have the same files for my PDA and laptop all on one drive. It's fast and simple, portable and very cheap. Highly recommended.

Works fine... when it's not overheating.......2007-10-06
I didn't need a card reader for everyday use, so cheap sounded good. I paid $5.50 shipped, so if it didn't work, no big loss. So with VERY low expectations I plugged in the super-short 1' USB cable and waited for XP to recognize the reader. It did. I inserted my SD card into my "best guess" slot because there are no instructions at all and it looks like the card will fit into 3 of the 4 slots. I had success on the first try, but I've been building computers for years so I may be more "advanced" than the average user (go figure). But after a while I started getting error messages in XP saying the device failed when I wasn't using it. So I picked it up and it was VERY hot. Being such an "advanced" user, I unplugged it. After it cooled I plugged it back in and it worked fine. So my superior intellect tells me I should keep it disconnected until I need to transfer data. Also keep in mind I have no idea if the cheap contacts are ruining my cards every time I insert them. By now, most of you should be thinking, "maybe I'll just buy a better built reader". ;)

Unreliable.......2007-08-12
I recently purchaed this All-in-1 memory card reader which is based on the Alcor Micro AU6371 USB 2.0 single LUN memory card reader chipset. I have used it to read, write, and format Secure Digital cards from several manufacturers of sizes from 64MB to 2GB and it has worked well most of the time. Unfortunately there are issues with the memory card reader locking up randomly, sometimes without there being any memory card in the device. It had locked up once while writing a large video file to a 2G SD card which resulted in a corrupt file system on that SD card and required a reformat of the card. When the card reader would lock up, it would become extremely hot and also once made every USB device on the same hub unresponsive and require a power cycle. Most of the time when it would lock up, unplugging its USB plug and reconnecting it usually resolved that particular lockup problem but sometimes it would require a power cycle of the host computer. I recommend looking for a different multi-card reader. Don't get this one.
it works, but sketchy.......2007-08-02
i bought this because i needed a memory card reader for my new laptop. it was super cheap and i didnt care if it was name brand or not. it works, doing what its supposed to, but it sounds like it scratches my sd ultra 2 2gb memory card when i put it in and out. that scared me into thinking it would eventually scratch it to become unreadable, so ive quickly learned spending more money for a better one is what i should have done in the first place. if you dont mind the minor details like that, then this is still a great product.
Works Great With My iMac.......2007-07-03
Plugged in my camera's memory card, connected the USB cable, and imported all my pictures. Just what I needed for an older digital camera that has no USB capability itself. No software to install, no directions to follow.
Even with a USB port on the camera, this handy little device allows me to swap memory cards in the camera and go right back to shooting pictures. This lets everyone view the shots on the iMac while I go on taking shots.

Pay cheap get cheap.......2007-10-14
I tried to not pay the high prices for a Microsoft charger but this charger worked great the first time. The second time it almost broke my zune player. I got a battery symbol on the player and it won't turn on. I then went to hook the zune to the computer usb port charger and the symbol went away and it charged fine. I will not use this junk charger again in fear of breaking the zune. They say they accept returns but they dont reimburse shipping. It will cost more to ship it back then I would get back for the device.

If you're looking for an ac wall charger for your zen vision m, this is the one to get. I have had it for 3 months now and not one problem. It charges incredibly fast. Approximately an hour for a full charge. It's amazing. And another plus is that it connects directly to the zen. There is no need for the extension that is required to connect the zen to the usb cord or a/v cord. This charger is perfect!

There is not even an installation CD because all the included software loads automatically from the hard drive the first time you plug it in. Disappointing.......2007-12-11
I already had a 500GB My Book Pro Edition that I bought about a year ago, and wanted to take advantage of its storage capability, so I picked up one of these 320GB drives to use as my primary backup drive.
Well, it did have that odd hum, unlike my other WD drive, but it seemed to be working just fine, so I didn't worry about it.
This last weekend, we had a power outage due to an accident on the main road. I was out at the time, so I wasn't aware of this until I got back. When I restarted my computer, my 500GB drive also started up just fine. Nothing from the 320GB drive, however.
I decided to reboot my computer, just in case. Nothing.
I checked the power connection. Good. I checked the FireWire connection. Good. Everything plugged in to what it should be. Still, I disconnected and reconnected, just in case.
I rebooted again. Still no response from the drive. This time I checked the power switch. No response.
If it weren't for the fact that my other WD drive is operating just fine, and that both drives were plugged into the same UPS/surge protector, I'd be tempted to blame the power outage.
Oh, and I've owned this drive for six weeks.

I've only had this drive a short time, but so far I've had no problems. The 500GB MyBook received some less than favorable reviews, so I purchased the 320GB drive. It was easy to set up, and the included backup software is convenient and simple to configure. At first I had it connected to my computer by USB, but when I purchased a Firewire card to connect a digital movie camera, I reconnected the MyBook drive to Firewire without a problem. I strongly recommend an external hard drive for daily backups and an occasional disk image, and the Western Digital MyBook 320 GB drive is a good choice.

WD MY Book Premium 320GB.......2007-11-12
This external hard drive was a great addition to my PC. 2 months after I started using it, my PC hard drive crashed. Since I run a small business with the PC, this was potentially devastating. After installing a new HD, I recovered within a couple of days because I had my data backed up. I highly recommend backing up, at least daily. This is an easy way to do it because you can schedule when and what type of backup you want either manual or automatic. The only warning I have is that there is not a lot of documentation that comes with the unit and the online support is not easy to access.

If I could give it a half star I would. I bought this drive at BB during their labor day special and returned not one but two. The first drive I brought home had both FireWire ports DOA. It worked fine using the USB but I prefer FireWire so back to the store it went. I thought that maybe it was a fluke so I opted for an exchange. The second drive seemed to work fine using the FireWire port so I thought cool, now let me integrate it into my FireWire daisy chain. Oops not a good idea, none of the other drives I attached after the My Book mounted. I thought it was strange so I unmounted the My Book drive unplugged it from my computer and plugged it in all alone using the other FireWire port. No worky. I plugged it in using the first FireWire port I tried and it was good. So the second drive only had one functional FireWire port. Back to the store it went since I need to daisy chain multiple drives and I ended up getting a full refund. That was two out of two drives that were flawed. I am not buying another WD product. Fool me once...

I got a Micro SD adapter for my one gig card and the adapter would NOT match up w/ the USB device. They also took 2 days past the delivery date. I'll NOT be buying from them again.

This is a good and inexpensive memory card reader. I have used it with Sony regular and PRO DUO memory (no additional adapter required for PRO DUO). I have also used it with my SD card that fits in my COMPAQ IPAQ and other PDAs (as well as my Dell and Toshiba laptops). I think it is a great product for the price.
The product does have a wide profile, so if your computer USB ports sit perpendicular to the ground, you'll need some space between your computer and the ground (or surface on which the computer is sitting).
