Somewhat disappointed.......2007-12-13
While the installation of the card and software was easy enough, I was never able to get it to properly recognize my Lacie 1Tb external Firewire 800 drive. The problem could lie with the drive -- the Lacie tech said they work with some PCI cards but not all. The real disappointment was that in the process of hooking things up, one of the three ports came loose and disappeared back into the chassis -- a sign of sub-standard workmanship. Probably a good card for the money, and still functional (well, 2/3rds functional)with other firewire/i-link components, but I'm going to have to pay a bit more for a card that will work with my drive (which works fine, albeit much more slowly, on my USB 2 port).

Belkin Firewire 800 Cards.......2007-08-29
The Belkin Firewire 800 card is an outstanding product however in the specifications and product description it does not explain that the card is not downward compatible to 400 speed without additional cables or firewire 800 drives which are expensive with limited availability. The product as shipped is not a simple plug and play with most firewire 400 configurations. To use the card you must acquire either a conversion cable or a firewire 800 drive.

Often I associated Belkin with cheaper, not-so-functional behavior. This cable, however, performs well, even better, than a thicker Zip-Linq cable I had purchased for the same purpose--and it cost less. Kudos, Belkin; shame on ZipLinq. We'll see how it holds up over time...

Crashes Computer When Hot.......2007-05-19
This product works great in my 17" Macbook Pro when it is NOT required to perform any labour intensive task. I reguraly work with Pro-tools LE and as a result my Macbook Pro can get quite hot. Using the Expresscard to move audio in and out of the Mac to reduce buss load for Pro-tools actually causes the Macbook to become super overheated. So hot in fact that the Mac simply stops working. The audio stops, the whole screen freezes and the Mac will not respond at all. (I had to remove the battery to reset it as the power button would not respond.) I've never seen such a crash before! So if you are intending to use this card in a Macbook Pro with a program such as Pro-tools LE which is very CPU intensive, I recommend not buying it.
Have Vista - Don't bother.......2007-04-27
I'm running a nice Dell laptop with Vista Ultimate. I bought this firewire card to connect to a new external SATA drive that supports Firewire 800.
Transfer rates are about 1/8th the speed of USB2.0. I'm hard pressed to get it to max out at 1MB/Sec when my USB easily hits 9-10MB/sec.
I just got off the phone with Belkin support.
"Oh, we use the built-in vista drivers."
I asked, "Do the default vista drivers support Fireware 800".
Answer, "No, they only emulate Firewire 400 support".
"When are the drivers for Vista going to be ready?"
"I don't know. If you need Firewire 800 support you should probably return this one and get another kind."

Belkin used to make great gear. This has put me over the edge. I'm done with Belkin.
Stay Away - this does not work with my MacBook Pro 15" .......2007-01-30
I have to say I am very unimpressed by the support from Belkin on this product. It is the only product to ever crash my MacBook AND that has no support documentation on the Belkin site.

Plug in card (card comes up as unknown vendor)
Plug in Lacie Firewire 800 drive
This pushes the card in which releases the card - which give you a grey curtain effect and a message saying power of your machine due to a crash.
I now have to pay to have this wondrous piece of technology returned.

Works with my MacBook Pro 15" with powered devices but was very sad to find out that it does not work with my 2.5 inch firewire external drive which is powered off of the computer. There is a power input (no help in knowing how to work it) on the side of the device. Adding power from a USB port lit up the drive but would not spin it up. I don't know if it is a power issue or an interface issue with the firmware on my external drive. Belkin's site is useless as there is no support info, extremely limited info on the product, and they don't respond to email. I would have rated them even lower but I have to take responsibility for buying it right out of the chute.
Will not work with Dell Inspiron laptops.......2006-12-30
I previously purchased a SIIG Firewire 800 Expresscard. After several weeks with SIIG tech support I'm told it is a known issue that card won't work with Dell laptops. So ... i phoned Belkin TechSupport before buying this card. They tell me they know of no such problems. Well, card gives exact same problem as SIIG! Works fine on Firewire 400 but the minute you use 1394b (Firewire 800) drivers, my Dell Inspiron 9400 bluescreens and reboots! Emailed and phoned Belkin tech support but no response/solution. From my experience, Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705's can't support Firewire 800.
Update: after almost 2 months of trying to get a resolution from Belkin, they advise their product development team is "still working on the problem". Would I recommend buying a Belkin product, no way, that level of customer service is a disgrace.

Cute, but dysfunctional.......2007-12-04
I spent a half hour trying to help a couple friends pull footage off a Canon HDDV camera. Not having worked with this camera before, we went through a ton of settings in Final Cut Pro trying to figure out why it wasn't recognized. I glanced at the setup, "Is this the FireWire cable? What the... it's not shielded is it?!"
After swapping in a standard cable, all was well. Dealing with cable voodoo is bad enough already without this madness. Don't torture yourself by buying 'cute' cables.

Works as advertized, but not what you expect..........2007-08-14
The Belkin 3 port FW800 hub works as far as it goes. But it is NOT what you expect. You wold think a three port hub would connect your computer to three devices; nope, it connects your computer to TWO devices; there are three ports, so you computer goes to one, and disc drives (for example) go to the other two. So it is not much better than a daisy chain from a FW800 drive.
The main reason to get this would be for more power for FW powered devices, and possibly to isolate two devices so that if one failed or was powered off, the other would still function.
I gave it four stars because it does what it is supposed to; just a caution to buyers.

This is indeed a three port hub, perhaps it would help the others if Amazon showed a picture of the connections.
The other reviews miss the point. When I buy a 3-port hub for 1394, I expect three ports. 1394 is not a hosted interface like USB where a hub would connect a single host to multiple targets. This is more versatile, like an ethernet hub, where 3 ports is just that, 3 ports. Try connecting two computers through USB, it will not work. This hub can connect three computers together, and they can transfer data as in a network, only at 800 Mb/s, just shy of GBe, but way faster than 100 base T. Here is a bit of technical information, a three port hub is simply the Texas Instruments Physical layer chip and a power supply. Any manufacturer will make a good product, select it for price or looks, this one is the cheapest I have found. Yes, I am an engineer, no, I do not work for Belkin.

Given that one of the ports is used for the input, to call it a 3-port hub is misleading.

I have not had a chance to really test this hub, but 1 of the 3 ports must be used to connect to the computer. This leaves only 2 hubs for device connection. In my way of thinking this is a 2 port hub. Any hub I have owned in the past has a dedicated port used to connect the hub to the computer. It is advertized as a X port hub where X is the number of devices you can connect to the hub.

This is my second Pure AV Silver Series four- to six-pin firewire cable. The first was purchased for personal use and the second for my video students because the transfer is so fast and clean. Pure AV Silver Series is by far the best video transfer Firewire cable for the money.
