Excellent replacement Solid Design Simple to Use.......2007-02-03
This remote is an excellent replacement for the standard peanut shaped DirecTv remote control. I am using it to control my Hughes HD TiVo DirecTv receiver, A Sony HD 42" LCD TV, a Sony STRDa5ES DTS surround sound home theater receiver and a Sony 400 disc DVD changer. This one remote allows me to control all of these devises without a complicated macro monster screen and I can operate everything in the dark because of the easily identified (by feel)buttons on the remote. The buttons have a very solid feel but it may take a day or so to re-orient your fingers to the new locations compared with the pld DirecTV peanut remote.
I do not like touch screen remotes because of the light they emit and the tediousness of needing to directly look at the remote, identify the touch screen button and then touch it, and then re-focus on the television screen. With a simple remote like this you can just do it all by feel.
The RC-23 remote is solid in your hand, lays flat on your side or coffee table and seems less apt to break in a fall than the original DirectTv Peanut remote. I would recommend this as a worthwhile replacement if your peanut remote is not performing as it once did after a few drops or spills.

Be careful to get what you really want.......2007-12-21
I ordered this item ANTonline through Amazon. This item says it is a backlite RF reomte but what they sent was a plain RC64 that is exactly like the oem remote that comes in the box. If you really need a RC64RB which is backlite and radio operated I think you will better served to get it directly from directv for $25.00.
AMAZON was impressive taking care of this tranaction. Amazon made this right even though the shipper Antonline refused contact to deal with this issue. Nice job AMAZON!
wrong remote.......2007-12-07
this remote is not RF as advertised, it a plain IF and will not work if your receiver is in a cabinet. it came from Antonline. I notified Amanda, their service mgr. she asked for the upc code which i gave her that was weeks ago, so far I have heard nothing. have emailed her and am getting stoned walled. don't do business with this outfit. dshadoan

This remote is a nice compliment to my current remote for my Directv HDDVR RC23. It has larger buttons and is slightly bigger in general that the RC23 remote.
So the BAD thing is that the remote described on this page is not exactly what you will get. The remote I received is not RF capable and does not have a backlit keypad.

Even though this item is listed on the Amazon site as a Universal RF remote, it is NOT RF capable. I spent thirty minutes trying to program it for RF before I finally called DirecTV and discovered that the RC64 is infrared only; the RC64R (the last R stands for RF) is the RF version, and that's not what is being sold here. If you need RF to work the unit in a cabinet, as I do, this remote is worthless.

Check your receiver model.......2007-06-12
DirecTV has not installed RF remote software on the non-HD receivers. So this won't work with a standard definition DVR or receiver even though there is a port on the back of the receiver for a RF remote antenna. I called for approximately 9 months and they kept telling me the software update was coming soon every time I called, but the dates for the software upgrades came and went with no RF remote capability added. We even tried to force the software update to download to make sure I had the latest software, and I did and the RF capability still wasn't activated.
The RC23 is the replacement remote for the non-HD equipment and does not have RF capability. Get yourself something like the Powermid X10 remote control extender if you want to use RF capability with a non-HD DirecTV receiver. If you complain enough to DirecTV they will credit your bill or maybe give you some free movie channels for a while to compensate you for not activating this capability. That might defray some of the cost of the remote control extender you'll have to buy.

I was so upset when I accidentally ruined my remote control that came with my DirecTV TiVo. Now that I have this one, I would never want to use another remote control. It is so user friendly. My mother just bought a Hughes DirecTV TiVo and we are going to replace her remote with this one. It is very easy to read and controls other electronics too.
