I have a useless (to me anyway) Firewire 800 port on my Powerbook. This little baby lets me connect my Canon digital Firewire 400 camcorder to it through the adapter. Works like a charm. My Firewire 250 GB external HD doesn't like it for some odd reason, but I bought it for the camera and other standalone Firewire 400 devices, for which it works well.
I also like the fact that it is a small, hard, single piece of plastic. No wires or parts to get easily bent or something. Sonnet makes good products.

It works on a MacBook Pro. I used it with a Seagate External HardDrive and also a Mini-DV Camcorder. Both worked fine. And it was a good price.

I need an adaptor to plug a 800 cable into a 400 plug. I got just the opposite. Okay, i have enouh cables, I can switch configuration. Once I got that done, I started getting multiple "you have unplugged this device without warning" errors. Found out that the end of the sonnet cable has a flare to it that prevents two cords from being plugged into together.

I originally bought a firewire cable at Best Buy for $36.00 and then realized that my PC did not even have a firewire port. I found this product on Amazon and got it for $17.00 shipped. It gave me the PCI firewire port card and the cable. The only issue I have had is that when the video is being captured a few times the video on the PC got choppy but when I burned to DVD it came out fine and a few timed it did not recognize the camera the first time but I just replugged it and it came up the second time. Overall great deal for the money.

I just recently purchased a DV Camcorder and I needed to purchase a Firewire port along with it. Found this for very cheap and I have been very happy with the performance. The reason I give it 5 stars is because the price is low and it also comes with it's own Firewire cord.

Too bad that Adaptec has discontinue making this drive enclosure. You can use any IDE drive with this enclosure and the interface on the enclosure comes with FireWire and USB all at a very cheap price. If you have alot of spare IDE drives laying around and not in use, this drive enclosure is a great fit.

When I bought a digital camcorder, it wasn't long until I started wanting to be able to edit video I'd taken and burn it to VCD for my parents. The only hitch? I use Linux exclusively - I don't use the Windows OS anywhere, anyhow, or in any way. So, without going Mac, there was only one solution: find out what it takes to get video into my Linux system. The simple solution was to buy a firewire (ieee1394) interface card, plug it into my camcorder, and be happy - and that's just what I did.
At the time, this card was the only one explicitly named by the Linux1394 project (which does the official development for the ieee1394 module) available at the store I was in at the time. So, I chose it, took it home, and installed it. Using this for video is pretty straightforward - just compile your kernel with ieee1394 and video4linux support, plug in the card, and things work fine. I hear that Redhat 8.0 actually handles this without manual kernel tweaks, and includes DV capture software. If you're on an older version of the kernel however, be aware that you may encounter frozen firewire subsystems (requiring reboot) or, at worst, kernel panics when using the ieee1394 subsystem - particularly if the camcorder that's plugged in gets turned off or loses power (even if it's not recording at the time). To be fair, I doubt this was the card's fault, because so far the 2.4.20 kernel hasn't exhibited these symptoms.
Later on, in order to import analog video into my system, I also purchased a Dazzle DV Bridge, which works just fine in combination with this card.

Can't complain about the product even though it isn't working on my system. This is the second Firewire board addition I have tried and each has caused my system to freeze up solid.
Since they were from two different manufacturers, I am beginning to believe that is not the fault of either board maker but perhaps is the fault of the motherboard manufacturer or the BIOS firmware. Though the motherboard I am using (Mach Speed PT88AS) is supposed to support firewire, I just don't believe that boards from two different companies are both defective. I just wish Addonics had more information on their system about how their board operates. All they say is that drivers are provided by Windows XP SP2 but don't discuss any potential problems with motherboards or BIOS firmware.
