Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. Other DVD functions include bookmarking, picture zoom, parental lock, and a screen saver.

The SLV-D350P also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The VCR section offers 1-month, 8-event advance programming, and your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the front panel for hassle-free connections. Its 4-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. Its 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode. Commercial skip makes it easier than ever to zip past commercials and unwanted "coming attractions," jumping forward 30 seconds for every press of the commercial-skip button.

The AV receiver decodes not only Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals, but Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Logic II, as well. Dolby Pro Logic II generates 5.1 sound from any stereo source for enveloping simulated surround sound. One each optical and coaxial digital-audio input grant direct digital access to a satellite receiver, minidisc player, CD player, or other compatible device. The unit's FM/AM tuner offers 30 station presets: 20 for FM and 10 for AM.

The speakers are video shielded for distortion-free placement near (or, in the case of the center channel, on) your television. The center-channel speaker, which handles most dialogue and 70 percent of a movie's sound, is slightly larger than the four (left/right and surround left/right) other satellites, and the bass-reflex subwoofer uses a large, 8-inch woofer for delivering the powerful low-frequency effects for which it was designed. You get what you pay for.......2006-04-07

I've had this unit for approximately a year now. I purchased it along with a Sony 42" Grand WEGA RP-LCD.

This system is good for a small room, but it is not nearly loud enough for a normally-sized living room. The satellites don't become effective until you have the volume cranked to the 60s (out of 70) and the subwoofer doesn't pump out nearly enough bass.

It's obviously tailored towards a casual user, which is perfect for the price. Wish I had just gotten something louder.

Also, this system has 2 remotes: 1 for the receiver, and 1 for the DVD/VCR. You have to use both unless you get a universal.

The Good:

The Bad:
- WEAK POWER
- 2 remotes: 1 for receiver, 1 for DVD/VCR
- Subwoofer is sub-par. Not enough bass.

NEAT!!!.......2005-08-19

I looked at this at Best Buy and I say "WOW!" It has terrific sound quality and the picture quality on the VCR/DVD is okay. It has digital cinema sound, Dolby digital, Dolby pro-logic, Dolby pro-logic II, and last but not least, it has DTS surround sound. The buttons on the remote (for the VCR/DVD) are very small along with the words on the buttons. The subwoofer is very powerful. I said to myself, "I hope the pictures on the wall don't rattle and fall off." The center speaker also has a very nice sound quality. Use the sound fields located in "movie" for cinema-like sound. Overall, I recommend the system for the sound quality.

Overall, a nice unit. Not as powerful as the wattage would imply.

Some caveats:

- The DVD player itself is quite loud; during quiet passages of music or movies, it's a bit intrusive

- The VCR and DVD units are slow to respond to the keypresses of the base unit or the remote, which is somewhat annoying.

- The amplifier smelled quite "hot" during the first few weeks, which made me worry about reliability.

But I've had this unit for almost 6 months now and have been generally pleased with the performance and features, especially for the price.
