I expect a Home Theater In a Box (HTIB) to have surround available for more than just the internal functions like playing DVD's. Only Left/Right audio inputs are supplied via the Aux input for connection to a Satellite or Cable box. Digital Optical Audio is reserved for the PT1050, which costs $100 more.
If you plan on using this system for TV viewing, save your money and buy something with better capabilities.
Good for the price.......2007-12-22
Just setup my system two days ago. Setup was not terribly difficult but I have some experiece. Placing the receiver for the wireless speakers away from my 2.4G phone was necessary. I would not have thought the reciever would cause a problem. I moved it about 6 feet. My wireless 54G network had some problems. I have a Linksys WRT54G. It defaults to channel 6. I changed it to channel 11 and it works fine now. I'm writing this report on it now.
The sound difference is fantastic compared to regular sound. The bass really booms quite well and the highs are clear as crystal. The sound quality is really pretty good but not on a par with a high end component system that cost two or three times what this system costs. For the price I think it's great. I have it in a very large room 25'X50'. I expect that if the room was a bit smaller it would really shine. The upvert on Gladiator was fantastic. It didn't do as well with older DVDs pre 1998.
I'm am satisfied and very happy with this purchase.
Good Sound, Bad User Interface.......2007-12-16
Bought this unit 2 weeks ago. My experience is mostly in component systems, not HTIBs; I bought this unit based on online reviews from this site and others. Here are my observations:
Strengths: Sound quality was good. Decent clarity at both low and high volume levels. Bass from subwoofer was well matched, not overwhelming. More than enough power from speakers to fill an apartment, or small-mod living room/TV room. Easy setup -- only had to look at the manual once for the wireless surround setup. Yes, you CAN adjust both time delay and volume of all speakers.
Weaknesses: User interface and iPod interface. In the attempt to make the UI menu-driven, many functions that are single button-pushes on component systems (subtitle, language) require 3-4 buttons to operate. Kind of a drag if the lights are down low and you're fumbling with the remote. Speaking of the remote, it's not very well set up -- I keep on having to refer to the print manual to find out what the buttons do. Would love to have some TV channel controls so I can toss out my TV remote. Finally, the iPod interface is definitely something that was obviously rushed to market. The SCPT950 (and 953 and 1050 for that matter) is ONLY capable of playing the entire library by artist IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER. No playlists, no menus, no nothing. Just linear play. Quite a pain when you have 500-1000 songs on your ipod.
Have not tested: HD video output (only have a 480i TV).
Overall, would definitely do a bit more research before buying again. Sound quality is quite good, but the user interface is annoying for technical-minded people.

The set up was easy. I love the sound effects for the t.v. and dvd but I wish it the volume could go up higher for parties. THe CD and DVD player section takes a while to play when swiching over. Overall I give this a 85%.
Glorified 5 disc CD player.......2007-11-24
Has only one HDMI input & NO other digital inputs.
All audio features such as speaker balance, speaker level, etc. needs to be done from CD/DVD source. (ie) can't do it while watching Sat. TV. or HD TV.
DVD functions such as pan or zoom has to be done via a clumsy on screen menu. I have cheap Phillips system that allows one to do this via remote buttons.
The only positive that I have for this system is that the wireless speakers do work fine with no popping or interference.
I wish I had not bought this unit!

Lasted ALMOST a year..........2006-10-16
I received this product in a raffle less than a year ago. At the time it was selling retail for $400US. It worked ok, except I could never get it to record VHS or play sound from the TV or cable box. The only time the audio worked was if you were playing something in the unit itself, like a DVD or VHS tape. Well, here we are barely 10 months later and the DVD player quit working. I went to the support area of Panasonic's website, to see if there was a service center nearby, and selected the model # from a drop down menu, and I get the message,"unable to locate a matching model #." I wouldn't recommend any Panasonic product to anyone. All they seem to care about is making the sale. They make it sound like you're getting more for your money, but the quality isn't built in, and there's poor support when your unit breaks. If I had paid US$400 for this unit, I'd be hot under the collar. That's my opinion.

I like the sound and the unit looks good. I haven't figured out how to route the TV sound through the VCR. And when I put on a DVD, the sound is mostly from the rear speakers. Any help would be appreciated.

I have one of that system 'a la' Panasonic and it is great from all points of view! I love it!
I saw some unsatisfied guys (about Panasonic) and i want to say something about that. I think they don't know that the best technologies in electronics are from Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer and other big japanese brands (trust me, my dad is working in a service center in Romania and i know the technological difference between a Panasonic amplifier system and a Jvc one, for example) . The faults about they're systems are because those systems are made in other countries than Japan (Korea, China, Usa...)and those countries are not so specialized like Japan, that is why most of them have problems. So don't blame Panasonic becouse some stupid american, german, romanian, korean... don't know nothing about do a great job for their customers !!!

WE think the product is great. But the instructions are horrible. They are very high level and confusing. Calling tech support only resulted in a recommendation that the unit was broken and needed to be returned to the service center. Luckily I called a home theater company who spent two hours programming the unit and correcting a connection. My advice is that if you run into problems, spend the money for a professionl. It's very worth it.

My display also quit working just after it went out of warranty (1 year). There is obviously an issue with these. Since Panasonic is not addressing it, I suggest you avoid this one!

Just like many others are complaining the display stopped working a few weeks before warranty expired. I did not have a chance to call tech support to get it fix and now they won't fix it. I thought panasonic made good products and in fact they were on top of my list until now.
Fails after a year.......2007-03-11
The 5 CD changer refused to close after 1 year two weeks. I eventually had to forcefully push cd tray # 1 back in and just use trays 2-5. (Yes I know you are not supposed to force it back in, but I ran out of options.) After two more weeks the LED display went out. All I can use it for now is sound. The lack of a display makes its really hard to tell what mode you are in or how loud the speakers are. Looking for a replacement.

Do not buy ANY Panasonic Products. My Home Theatre that I bought was the SC-HT830V. I paid nearly $400 for it. Exactly 1 year & 2 weeks after buying it, the display quit working, and no sound came out of the speakers. One year after spending $400, its worth nothing.
And, of course, their customer support were nicely saying..."I'm sorry, sir, but since it is out of warranty, company policy says we can't do anything." So, despite spending $400 (which is a lot to me), they would not do a thing because I the system broke 2 weeks too late.
Therefore, they lost a customer...for life. And I urge you to stay away from them.

I purchased this system 1.5 years ago from Walmart. Not a bad price and the sound was ok (while it worked). Some set up issues and arrangement problems due to short cables but all in all OK for the price.
However: little did I know that six months later, after not all that much use and sitting in one and only one location, it absolutely refused to put out sound! NO SOUND AT ALL except for the first few seconds playing a CD. That's it! After that, nothing.
Six months of use is all I got for my money. Panasonic refused to answer my questions via their website. ARGHHHH!

PANASONIC MAKES GARBAGE!.......2006-04-11
HOME THEATER? - PANASONIC MAKES GARBAGE! (Consider before buying any Panasonic product.) I bought a DVD Home Theater Sound System, Panasonic Model SC-HT900 (more expensive than the 670 model) less than three years ago and the sound has gone out! The product had normal use and good care by two fifty-somethings. Panasonic has a service center over an hour's drive away. After patronizing me as though I was an idiot, the Panasonic customer "care" person on the phone would not offer any breaks, other than a "slight discount" on the purchase of a newer model (equivalent to a retail sale). What gall - attempting to capitalize on their failed product! I have been told it's not worth the anticipated cost of repairs. So after spending $500 on a product that looks brand new, two years later I have to trash it? My last surround sound system was a cheap RCA; actually lasted exactly three years (longer than the Panasonic) before it failed. We should not buy products from companies that do not take responsibility for their products. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY PANASONIC!
Wish I knew then what I know now........2005-07-02
Recently purched this "hearing aid" for my husband for father's day. I truly like the look and felt I couldn't go wrong with the Panasonic brand. It took a few hours for me to attach wires but could not get it working. I enlisted the aid of a college tech person to get it up and running but I still have two cables with mini plugs that we cannot find ports for. The Subwoofer contains the amp so all the speaker wires are attached to the back of the Sub and a heavy duty cable attaches the Sub to the DVD. What this means is that the Sub must be placed beside the television. I cannot hide it next to a chair or sofa. Panasonic support told me to go to Radio Shack to see if I could get a longer cable or an extension as Panasonic did not make one. Had I known about this arrangement with the wires I would definitely not have purchased this model. Hiding the Sub is an important feature for me. But the sound is good so I have no complaints.
Mixed thoughts.......2005-01-06
The sound quality was amazing, eventhough I didn't get crank it up to a good level. DVD player portion broke after 2 days, would only display "wait" as soon as it was turned on and could not do anything except oddly being able to change the equalizer mode. Had to manually pull out trays to get my dvd's back so that I could return the unit. I will give it one more shot because of the namebrand,sound quality and good price.

The surround, satellite, and center channel speakers are all magnetically shielded so as not to interfere with your TV's video signal and are wall-mountable for easier installation.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SC-HT830V is ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The result is remarkably crisp movies that look as good as the films in your local multiplex. Further video enhancements include a selectable aspect ratio; a Cinema mode that reduces glare, softens resolution, and improves detail in dark scenes; and a depth enhancer that reduces image background noise and ensures true-to-life skin tones.
The DVD player/changer is compatible with a wide range of other disc formats as well, including DVD-Audio, DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW, as well as HighMAT, JPEG, MP3, and WMA file formats. The incorporated High-Performance Media Access Technology (HighMAT) provides an enhanced method of storing, arranging, and playing back personal digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable discs such as CD-RW media. The DVD-Audio compatibility, on the other hand, is particularly pleasing to audiophiles, as the super-high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) discs offer multichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.

At least I'm reviewing the system in question and not the SC-HT700 or another Panasonic system with a VCR, as two of the other reviewers did.
I've had this system for 2 years now, and I'm quite happy with it. It's been very reliable. Sound is decent, for what it is: a home theater in a box. Sound options are good: Dolby digital, Prologic, ability to accentuate the center channel, equalizer, etc. It's not for audiophiles, but is quite adequate for my ears. Recording on DVDs and DVD-RAMs is better than my old VCR recording (duh). The flexible recording option is nice, as the machine optimizes compression based on the set recording time. I now use the system to record off my DVR so that I can unload the hard drive, and it works well for this, producing compatible DVDs. It has a satisfactory number of inputs: I have off-air and satellite TV, VCR, and network music stream hooked in, and my son uses the front inputs for some games.
Overall, a good system for the price.
