Customer Reviews:
Decent device.......2007-12-05
This is as good as any linksys product. Works up to expectations. Easy install. Put it in your system and forget it.
GREAT UNIT!!!!.......2007-11-03
This unit works great! It was easy to set up and has given me no problems. I should've gotten one sooner!
Good with vista.......2007-10-31
I bought this card because it was VISTA tested, and sure enough it works great. It took me about 10 min to get it sorted out. The installation directions are straight forward, but are pointless. I allowed VISTA to do its 'thing.' The signal is not at full strength, but I can download and surf the web still!!! My router is on the other side of my house.
Not For Me!.......2007-10-27
Installed and re-installed several times with no success. Did not work for me and got refund. Amazon was great as always and these things happen. Re-installed my original adapter. Thanks Amazon!
Intermittant connection = terrible.......2007-10-03
Do not buy this piece of junk. I recently set up an office for one of my clients and I wanted to save some money so I bought the less expensive linksys WRT54G and the matching linksys pci cards with speedbooster. This set up has not been consistent since day one. I am replacing the entire thing with a netgear router and netgear cards.

Amazon.com Product Description
Add a zesty style to your mobile computing with the stunning good looks of the deep black Sony VAIO VGN-CR240E/B notebook PC, which offers unique eye-catching features, impressive attention-to-detail, and an amazingly thin and light profile. Aside from its jaw-dropping good looks, it's also an entertainment powerhouse. The instant AV Mode feature enables you to start watching a DVD or listening to music with the push of a single button--without having to boot up the system--and the convenient, built-in multimedia control buttons also let you control all playback functions.
This notebook is powered by the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, which offers a top-of-the-line 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 2 MB L2 cache. The Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, as well as excellent battery management. It also includes Intel's 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. A built-in 1.3 megapixel digital web camera lets you quickly snap photos and participate in live video chats. Other features include a bright 14.1-inch XBRITE-ECO screen, 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum capacity), multi-format/dual-layer DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard 34 slot, and both Memory Stick and SD memory cart slots. It also comes with a biometric fingerprint reader for added security.
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
- Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
- Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
- Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
- Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.
- Hard Drive: The 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. However its 4200 RPM speed is a bit slower than current standard hard drives. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 82-key keyboard (2mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad. Playback controls include play/pause, stop, forward, rewind, AV mode, mute, volume +/-, capture, and display off.
Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 14.1-inch WXGA high-definition screen, with its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle.
Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 358 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments).
This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (no PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- Video output: 1 VGA, 1 S-Video
- 1 ExpressCard/34 slot
- Memory Stick/Memory Stick DUO slot (with MagicGate functionality)
- Secure Digital memory card slot (compatible with MMC cards)
- 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.
Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.
Preloaded Software
Includes Sony Click to DVD (for easy DVD creation), Microsoft Works SE 9.0, Microsoft Office 2007 (60-day trial), Symantec Norton 360 All-In-One Security (with 60 days of Live Update).
Dimensions & Weight
This notebook measures 13.2 x 9.8 x 1.67 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 5.5 pounds.
Power
It's powered by the VGP-BPS9A/S rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of between 2 and 4.5 hours (depending on usage).
What's in the Box
This package contains the VGN-CR240E/B notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty, and Sony offers 1-year of toll-free telephone technical assistance.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect.......2007-12-25
This is the best laptop I've ever seen for this price range, everything's working fine and it's quite powerful. The only thing that may be considered as a lacking part is a microphone for a webcam. As for everything else, it's great.
Great laptop, Sony services could be better.......2007-10-30
I just received this laptop last week and so far, so good. It is quiet and remains relatively cool. It is a decent size and weight, just on the border of being lightweight. It handles tasks very quickly and the display is nice. Battery life is good, if run in the power saving mode, but performance and display are sacrificed.
My only problem with this laptop is the lack of support from Sony. You pretty much have to stick with the OS installed (Vista Home Premium) if you want all your hardware to function correctly. When I first received the laptop, I installed Vista Ultimate, only to find out that there is no software/driver support available yet for the OS. I received no recovery disks with the laptop, but a hidden 5GB partition is in-built to recover you laptop back to factory settings as long as you don't format your hard drive.
The laptop comes loaded with bloatware which can take a few hours to sift through and remove. Some of these are required to have hardware function (i.e. Protector Suite QL for the biometric fingerprint reader), but most are useless or are trials. I suggest proceeding with caution when deleting anything as it takes a few hours alone to restore back to factory settings if you happen to delete something that was a necessity.
*EDIT*
It's been almost a month since I got the laptop. I've so far had no hardware or software issues with it. I have noticed that responsiveness in the keyboard is decreased when the mouse touchpad is enabled, probably from accidental mouse movement. One of the things I wanted to point out was the prime location of the USB ports. There is on located on the front right hand side of the laptop which is perfect for wireless or corded mouse USB adapters. I've seen a number of laptops with inconveniently positioned USB ports that make it kind of a hassle to use your mouse. I also wanted to point out the responsiveness of the laptop when coming back from standby. As far as sound is concerned, the inbuilt speakers certaintly not loud enough to overcome a loud conversation around you or a lot of noise, but in a quiet environment, they are more than enough. They're located on the sides of the keyboard, so the sound projects upward instead of toward you, which I find to be the only downside.

Customer Reviews:
E-510.......2007-12-26
Before I bought this camera, I searched the web for equivalent products. I was slightly biased in that I already owned a Olympus camera (E-300). However, what I was looking for was a camera that had 10 or more mega pixels, and had image stabilization as I planned to use it for nature photography; animals don't stand still. Light weight was not a as important but nice to have.
This camera met all of my expectations. The image stabilization works quite well. I had one surprise; the lenses were also lighter than their predecessors. I highly recommend this camera.
Excellent camera meets professional needs........2007-12-24
I waited a long time before switching from a 35mm film SLR Canon camera to a digital. I asked many photographers, read online reviews, and browsed through many magazine articles. Then I spoke with Keith Lazelle, a superb nature photographer from Washington State, and he told me he switched from film to digital with an Olympus Evolt 500, because he was then able to use his other Olympus lenses with an adapter. I figured if it was good enough for such an excellent photographer, it would be good enough for me! I have not been disappointed.
The Evolt 500 with its 2 lenses are more than enough for my needs. I love to take spontaneous shots of wildlife and waterways, and this camera has been an absolute delight. It took me a while on the learning curve for all the digital stuff (and I'm still learning), but overall it is very easy to use, and images turn out very sharp.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and have been in the field photographing under plenty of rain and cold weather - and while I always have an extended hood on the lens to protect it from rain drops, I am not always successful in protecting the entire camera. I have never had any moisture/condensation problems.
I highly recommend this camera to anyone either beginning to use a digital SLR or to a professional.
Excellent machine!.......2007-12-24
I've had this camera for just over a month and have just started to scratch the surface of learning what this baby can do! I am very impressed with the quality of the body and the kit lenses that came with it are awesome, giving me everything from an 28mm wide angle to 300mm long lens, with incredible macro capability from each. I had been using 35mm for many years up until I went digital 7 years ago, and this camera by far is the best I've ever owned. I agree with other reviews I have read, the camera has difficulty in low light with the auto focus function, but this is easily fixed by using the manual focus function, easily accessable through the display on the back. I did extensive research on DSLR's before purchasing, the Olympus had the best features, especially being able to use the rear display for live framing, which no other DSLR offers. I have been an amateur photographer for 40+ years and highly recommend this camera!
Good camera - value for money.......2007-12-24
The live-view and image stabilization features are really helpful. For the price, it is a value for money deal.
Always buy a 2GB card along with the camera.
evolt 510.......2007-12-23

Customer Reviews:
WOW.......2007-12-16
Firs, thanks for FAST delivery. I think it was only two days before I recieved my package.
Product is excellent, right to the piont, easy to use, and ACCURATE calibration. I did not try the PrinterFix yet, but I guess it should be good.
I recommend this product,,,,, great value for the money.
Easy monitor calibration at the right price.......2007-11-16
I installed this product on my PC and there were no problems. The most difficult thing was figuring out the monitors directions for adjusting the color settings. The calibration seems to have worked perfectly, or at least, as perfectly as I need for my purposes. I had been getting prints that did not match the monitor which wastes paper, ink and time. I am a little sorry I didn't buy the spyder2 pro instead of the suite. I bought the suite thinking that it would have provided means of calibrating my printers, but it doesn't offer much in that direction. Also, Spyder3 is already out, but I figured I didn't need professional level calibration and this product was much less money.
Works as advertised, but tedious.......2007-08-06
The monitor profiler works great.
The print fix plus software is a print tweak, repeat affair. I needed five tries to get close on the first paper I tried.
Buggy. When it works it's great, IF you can get it to work........2007-08-02
Works great, but MANY people have had a hard time getting the computer to recognize the device. Software will often say "Please plug in your sensor", when the device is already plugged in!
IF you get it to work you will be VERY happy with the results-- just be prepared for an endless series of downloading drivers, re-installing, re-booting, etc, etc.
Glad I bought it!!.......2007-08-01
For the longest time my photos did not print out the way it looked on my monitor. After doing a little research I got the Colorvision Syder2 to calibrate my monitor. Its easy to use. Within minutes my monitor was calibrated. I gave it a test and immediately printed out a photo. It was exactly what I was looking for. It printed out great. Monitor calibration is what I needed and the Colorvision Spyder2 did a great job.

Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process).
Optimized for mobile performance, it's powered by the 1.9 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other features include a large 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), 54g Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD drive (which can also burn CDs), NVidia GeForce Go 7150 video card with up to 287 MB of shared video memory, Bluetooth connectivity, multi-format memory card reader, and integrated Webcam for easy video conferencing.
It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: The 1.9 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB DDR2) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
While this notebook is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14.1-inch display (1280 x 800-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen--taking up less space on your desk. Video is powered by the integrated NVidia GeForce Go 7150 graphics/video card, which provides up to 287 MB of video memory shared with the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications.
The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which includes both super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

Customer Reviews:
Nice design, performance, avg battery life........2007-12-24
Just got it from Amazon about a month and a half ago; haven't really crashed tested it yet, but I have a pretty good idea what to expect from this beauty.
Pros: Sleek design (good WOW factor); thin and light as advertised; good load of tech specs (USB's, HD, Ram, Lightscribe, bluetooth, wireless, webcam/mic, etc.); good performance (not one reboot or slowing down, even after upgrading to Vista Ultimate); nice screen definition.
Cons: IMHO, not long enough battery life; no fingerprint reader (becoming quite a standar nowadays); touchpad needs a little more precision.
All in all, great laptop both for work and entertainment; this is my first one with integrated webcam/mic, and that's a charm for skyping or IM. The screen resolution is fantastic, and performance has been above average. I use the Office 2007 package, Project, Visio stuff, not much of graphics editing. In other words, business users can't go wrong with this, even if it's portrayed as an "entertainment" notebook; just get Vista Ultimate and you'll be ready to rock and roll with this machine.
Have a good one,
Miguel.
P.S.: Might as well consider buying a Bluetooth mouse (sincronized perfectly without proprietary software), a Quickdock station and an additional AC adapter. Just makes it easier to work when in the office.
Great price for this laptop, problem with camera and vista.......2007-12-19
This is a great laptop for me, is powerful and small, excellent almost for all.
The only inconvenient is the web cam. The web cam has good resolution but not always is found for windows... I don't know why. But when switch the status device to disable and switch to enable again (in windows hardware manager), windows can to found the web cam device again. I think that is other bug of windows vista.
HIG
Works like a charm.......2007-12-09
I use it for graphic design, web page creation, surfing the Internet and a variety of business functions. Original machine came with 2GB of RAM and I bumped it up to 4GB to handle all the design apps that are running on it (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Dreamweaver). To this date I've been completely satisfied.
In addition, the screen is gorgeous, the touch-pad is perfect, and the operation is very smooth. Some people aren't happy with Vista, but if your system can handle it, it's actually quite nice (once you get over the tiny learning curve).
I travel by train to and from work every day, and I use this laptop on the road all the time. While it's certainly not bomb-proof, it can handle most normal wear and tear. (If you need something virtually indestructible, you might want to check out a Lenovo).
A couple of quick notes:
1. HP puts a bunch of additional software on their factory computers. I'd highly recommend uninstalling most of it to speed up your system. If you're not sure how, most places will do it for you for a small fee.
2. HP customer service is notoriously bad (I haven't had to call them yet, but I've heard lots of stories). If you're not a technical person and freak out when something goes wrong with your machine - you might not want an HP. However, if you're comfortable with diagnosing and fixing most problems (or have friends who are), then you'll be just fine.
3. For the price, portability, overall aesthetics and impressive specs, this computer is a actually a pretty great deal. Until I have any major problems, I'll continue recommending it to most users with similar needs.
HP CUSTOMER SERVICE SO BAD, THINK TWICE.......2007-12-07
I am in the throes of the worst customer service experience of my life. 11 hours on the phone, 2 weeks, appeal to case management & I am no closer to receiving warranty replacement for hard drive that failed after 3 months. Judging from web content, this is the typical story for HP customer service.
Great option.......2007-12-04
I bought first a Sony laptop, it was more heavy and the system worked badly... I returned it and bought this HP, I love it!
I use it at home, I chat, skype, gmail... not much more... I'm a basic user!
Customer Reviews:
The best 4.5 megapixel camera on earth!.......2007-12-05
I've owned the SD9 and now the SD14. The only two lenses I own for the SD are the Sigma 150/EX Macro and the 10-20/EX zoom. I shoot predominately Canon (1Ds/2, 1D/2, 30D and assorted lenses) but have a soft spot for the Foveon X3 technology, which produces a "look" that is difficult to replicate using a non-X3 "CFA" sensor (the type used in all other dSLRs).
First, don't be caught up in the various hyperbolic statements by Foveon/Sigma marketing and X3 zealots. The SD14 is really a 4.5 (not 14) megapixel camera. Photographs are two-dimensional (flat) representations. An 8x10 photo is still 8x10 even when you stack three red, green, and blues ones on top of each other. The SD14 has "only" 4.5MP in an X/Y space, which is all that matters. It's *how* the SD14 captures each one of those pixels that gives it an advantage over cameras with similar resolution. When it comes to resolving detail, the SD14 is roughly equivalent to the current crop of 8-10MP digital SLRs, and due to the unique nature of how its sensor captures those details gives it an edge to some believers. I like to use the SD for macro and some landscape photography, but since my acquisition of the 16MP Canon 1Ds Mk2 the SD14 has gotten little use. The SD14 easily matches both of my 8MP 1D/2 and 30D for both genres of photography, and in some ways produces images more to my personal tastes, but the 1Ds is clearly superior (as it should be for an $8,000 camera body).
If you like the unique results the SD14 is capable of, and your style of photography does not require advanced features like fast shooting, a high-performance AF system, and some other features found in most competing brands then the SD may be just the thing for you. Since landscapes don't run around and most macro subjects don't either it is perfect for these tasks -- especially at its current low price around $800. However, if your photography style is mixed and you may just as frequently find yourself capturing quick, fleeting subjects, or you need a deep buffer with a fast frame rate (ie: a responsive camera) then the SD14 is definitely NOT the body for you. The autofocus (AF) system is generations behind those in even the low end of modern dSLRs such as the Nikon D80 or Canon 40D, and leagues behind the current crop of high performance offerings like the Canon 1D or Nikon D3 or D300 series.
In short, most 10MP cameras can and do offer more compelling features, etc with likewise similar image quality, but for a narrow set of parameters the Foveon-equipped SD14 brings a "uniqueness" to the image capture that no other camera can offer. If that is your primary criteria then I can recommend the SD14. Unfortunately, much of this advantage evaporates once the image is put to print.
So, thumbs up if you're a landscape or macrophile. Otherwise the average customer would be better served by most of the more capable brands' offerings.
Sigma SD14 user for 8 months.......2007-12-03
After 8 months of SD14 usage, I still consider my earlier review posted on dpreview.com website as accurate. The SD14 has had various firmware updates as well, making it in my opinion an even more versatile camera. For example, you can now shoot ISO50 with extraordinary detail and virtually no noise in shadows, especially an advantage to landscape photographers.
People not truly familiar with the Foveon technology will argue over the megapixel rating, but in actual usage, the SD14 can and does equal image quality coming from much more expensive or 'higher' MP-rated cameras. The Sigma forum at dpreview.com has links to such comparisons.
My earlier review:
The SD14 is smaller in size than previous models SD9 (2002) and SD10 (2003) but still somewhat larger than the 'smallest' other brand DSLRs. The SD14 is solid and well-balanced, thus for me much easier to hold and hand shoot. My favorite new feature: SD14 has a new toggle control on the back to select ISO, shooting mode (RAW or various settings of in-camera JPEG), RAW-JPEG resolutions and white balance. You can see these from the specification sheets, so I won't detail the settings' options. But in use, it is very easy to check, choose, and change your settings without digging into menu trees. The built-in flash is useful (and SD14s also of course support external flash units).
I believe most photographers are drawn to the Sigma SD14 by the high image quality produced by the Foveon sensor; in this, the SD14 is in a class by itself. Fine image quality and details captured are extraordinarily good. While a beginner can put the SD14 on "P" mode (automatic mode) and shoot satisfactorily, this camera allows photographers to grow into its (and their) full capabilities. It doesn't have pre-set 'modes' (sunset, landscape, portrait, sports or 'child' modes as some other DSLRs today), it is more a clean, classic photographers' camera.
In sum, controls and settings are simple to use, and the image quality is extraordinarily good.
Isn't it about the picture?.......2007-09-11
I own this camera and it is true that it isn't the most elegant body on the planet, nor is it feature rich. It struggles at high ISO settings and its LCD display is sub-par. The fps speed is slow and it takes a long time to write to the CF card from the buffer. You are stuck with Sigma lenses and I cant say that the 14.1 MP rating is s true 14.1 MP. But at the end of the day, when used for what it is intended - to take pictures - it produces the most beautiful and stunningly real, film like, dynamic, true color results. If you want features and functionality but lower quality pictures, go ahead and buy a CCD or CMOS sensor driven camera. If your after the best digital pictures available, shoot with the different cameras and review the results in a blind test. Chances are you will be a Sigma owner like me. That is what I did and I chose the Sigma.
~ ~ ~ Sigma SD14 Problems, ERROR d7 1E ~ ~ ~.......2007-08-17
. . .After writing a 6 line email to SIGMA about a problem I was having, A Rory tech wrote back asking many ?'s
I had forgot to include the ERROR code (d7 1E). In my Second Email I only wrote, "ALSO, THE ERROR : d7 1E, is a reacquiring error.
The next day I received "Marcus please send your camera to our service department for further review."
Now waiting to hear from O'donoghue . . .08.17.07,10:29AM/per UPS they received on 08.08.07.
look past the marketing hype.......2007-08-12
the thing sigma isn't telling you is that the touted 14 mp resolution is only interpolated. pop photography tested the lens and found the actual resolution to be closer to 8 mp, not the 14 as claimed. thus a cheaper d80 or rebel xti has more resolution than the sd14. besides the slow fps rate, the camera also suffers in high-ISO performance -- a d40 would do better in this department -- and is spotty with jpegs, although it's clearly meant for shooters who shoot 100% RAW images. there are other quirks which seem to make this more of a cult/niche camera than an out-the-park home run that will compel nikon and canon users to sell their gear and convert. hopefully these flaws will be addressed in the next model. it's probably no mistake that the price has dropped precipitously since introduction; it's currently about $450 under MSRP, under $1200, which is about right, since it is clearly not as full-featured or intuitive as a d200 (or even a d80 for that matter). the one good thing is that sigma does make some good glass (like the 105 macro, the 30/1.4, and the 50-150/2.8), although you really have to be a true believer in the foveon chip to only want to use sigma lenses. while i own the sigma 15mm fisheye and 50-150 (and am eyeing the 30), i like being able to use other offerings from tamron, tokina, and of course, nikon, on my dslr. nikon users may want to look at the fuji s5 pro instead for its expanded dynamic range and nikon f-mount. that one is also slow, but built on a d200 body, so you get the weather-sealing and other features for your $$.

Customer Reviews:
Great scanner, but not without flaws.......2007-12-03
Folks buy this scanner mostly for scanning transparencies, and expect "drum scan" performance levels from it. It simply does not deliver anything anywhere close to drum scan. That said, for large format film, this is the cheapest acceptable option and the results are pretty darn good if you know what you're doing. For medium format and 35mm you should purchase dedicated scanners, this one simply won't cut it.
So, to recap, great scanner for large format slides and flat reflective originals. Look elsewhere for decent scans of 35mm, MF slides or negatives.
Epson V750-M is nice, but 4800 dpi is marketing hype.......2007-11-22
In October 2007 my lab bought an Epson V750-M scanner. This is my second experience with it, having had a previous lab buy one in May 2006, soon after its introduction. The SilverFast software is ok, but I usually use Hamrick's VueScan Pro ($90, www.hamrick.com), because I often want its 16-bit "raw" (tiff) mode, where the data goes straight to disk (gamma = 1). I also have a lot of use for the V750-M's infrared scan mode, which is easy to set in VueScan Pro.
The 4800 dpi mode is just marketing hype. You would need your specimen to be in perfect focus to make use of this setting. An 24-bit RGB 8.5x11 inch scan is 1.3 Gigabytes, so a 4800 dpi scan would be 4x that size! Even at 2400 dpi, I needed to put a pile of copier paper on top of an archival warped photo in order to flatten it reasonably well (I bought the V750-M specifically because it has a large gap between the glass platen and full size transparency lid - I have thick objects to scan). On the positive side, at 2400 dpi, the way too fine to read by eye inscriptions/miniature photos on a colleagues family tree was easily read on the computer monitor after scanning (I further improved the readibility in Photoshop by switching to 8-bit monochrome mode, unsharp masking [filter menu - sharpen - unsharp mask: 100%, 5 or 15, 0], and contrast adjusting so that min and max intensity sliders were at the X-axis asymptotes of the histogram peak in Image - adjust(ments) - Levels.
Of course you 9or I) should not be scanning full page specimens at 4800 dpi. Professionally, I am a light microscopist, and one application for this scanner is to scan biomedical microsope slides. I have previously scanned and posted on the Internet a "whole slide image' of a mouse ( http://home.earthlink.net/~tiki_goddess/ ) using a Microtek 35mm slide scanner (Microtek 4000tf/Pathscan unit). The slide scanner does a much better job focusing and resolving fine details than the Epson V750-M. That said, unsharp masking improves the apparent sharpness of slide images from both scanners, with the Microtek being superior (also a bit more expensive at time of purchase 2 years ago).
The optical density range (a.k.a. Dmax) is ok, but a bit hyped, as tested using calibrated optical density step tablets and Edmund Scientific neutral density filters.
The Epson V750-M is far superior to any flatbed scanner from several years ago. If you are going to use it at high resolution (2400 dpi or higher), buy lots of computer RAM (RAM is cheap!), though recognize that Microsoft Windows (all versions) does silly things allocating RAM for applications.
Printing high resolution scans - there are now plenty of commercial and academic facilities that can print large enough posters to take advantage of your high resolution (i.e. 2400 dpi) scans. For example, my University photo place (http://calder.med.miami.edu/biomed/graphics.html) charges $8/square foot for archival quality prints on their Epson Stylus Pro 10600 printer ("up to 44" wide" in one direction, can be a very long banner in the other direction if you want). My calculations are that the family tree artwork I scanned for a colleague (~16x10", left and right scans merged in Photoshop) should look great printed full height on the Epson (i.e. ~64x40", for about $200 - not counting the price of an appropriate frame for his living room wall).
Doesn't have holder for 110 film.......2007-11-04
I should have read the item description a little closer, but I assumed that for $750 it would include mounts for a lot of older film formats that were popular in the '70s and '80s such as 110 film. I have a box of old photo's & negatives that I was planning to scan, but I won't be doing it with this scanner for 2 reasons:
1: Positioning each individual negative film strip manually on the flat bed is very time consuming. And without a holder, some of the negative films that are curled or twisted produce a distorted scan.

The 35mm film negative mount and automatic scanning feature works beautifully. You can load up 4 negative strips, click 'scan', and the scanner will scan everything and separate each picture into its own file. They need something like that for 110 film - then it would be feasible to scan and archive all of my old family photo's.
Otherwise the scanner is excellent - I would have given it 5 stars, but for $750 on Amazon, I expected it to include negative film mounts for major film types that have been popular in the last 20-30 years. If you only have 35mm nega
