4 out of 5 stars slow starter.......2007-05-22

small channel display and very slow to turn on until warmed up. Ditto for channel changing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value, brilliant picture, nice feature set........2007-05-06

I've had this for about six weeks, and I can tell you that while the brand isn't very glamorous, and the speakers don't produce the best sound, this is a very versatile TV with an amazing picture, and I love mine.

First off, mine is connected via coax to a small indoor antenna, and I get all four networks in HD, and around 12 other channels in my area (in both regular def and HD). The onscreen program guide works well. There are a lot of inputs, including Coax, DVI, HDMI, D-SUB (VGA), S-Video, and Component. The remote is simple and effective, and the picture quality is bright with great color. It's a very smart buy.

I have had no problems with picture quality or the remote. This is a great low cost widescreen HD TV.

Amazon.com Product Description

Save space in your entertainment center and enjoy vivid, colorful video with the 27-inch Westinghouse LTV-27W2 LCD TV, featuring a super-bright, HD-ready widescreen display and a stylishly thin, wall-mountable and frame-ready design. It has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner and it's capable of displaying high definition TV signals with an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box. In addition to HDTV functionality, this set can also be used as a PC monitor via the DVI and VGA inputs. It comes with a tabletop stand that's removable for wall mounting (with optional hardware).

The LTV-27W2 has a 1280 x 720-pixel resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, 16ms (millisecond) response time, 170-degree viewing angle, 550 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating--perfect for viewing colorful details in even direct sunlight--and 600:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) It's capable of displaying 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i high-definition video.

It features Faroudja's Emmy award-winning DCDi deinterlacing and scaling technology to up-convert standard video in DVDs to HD resolutions. DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) technology eliminates the jagginess that conventional upconverters introduced to diagonal edges in video. FaroudjaÕs unique DCDi algorithm identifies all the moving edges in a scene and adjusts the angle of interpolation at each pixel so that the interpolation always follows the edge instead of crossing it, eliminating staircasing or jagged edge artifacts.

The 3D comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image.

This set also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. Other video processing features include 3D-de-interlacing and progressive scan conversion, low-angle interpolation, and 3D digital upscaling (often beyond HD resolution). Other convenience features include an adjustable backlight for ambient lighting and power savings, picture-in-picture capability, closed caption decoding, and V-Chip parental controls.

It has two bottom-mounted stereo speakers that produce 18 watts of total audio power (9 watts per channel). It offers the following connection options:

Tech Talk
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

DVI (Digital Video Interface) provides an uncompressed transfer of high definition video from a digital video source to a digital display device. This universal standard for connecting flat-panel monitors is also used for data projectors, plasma displays, and digital TVs.

What's in the Box
LCD TV, remote control (with batteries), tabletop stand, power cable, printed operating instructions

5 out of 5 stars Greta deal on a fabulous TV!.......2007-10-30

Elegant style, decent sound, superb HD picture describes this offering from Westinghouse. If you are looking for a main set in a big house, I probably would not buy this screen size, but for an office, den bedroom-more than adequate. This is my third LCD purchase of a Westinghouse product, and I would love to see a 60" with companion sound be offered. I am a professional videographer and I purchased this unit for color-quality check of my video projects and it fits the bill handsomely-and I got it refurb from Ecost for $300! Watch out though-mine came with no manual of power cord_I am currently resolving this dispute from Ecost, so no biggie. Got it in three days standard DHL service!

For the above reasons, but it.

1 out of 5 stars Same Problem! Power Source dies Right After the Warranty Runs Out.......2007-04-03

I just had EXACTLY the same problem as another reviewer. I bought the TV in February of 2006 and in March of 2007 (1 month after the warranty runs out), the tv died. Westinghouse tech support suggested I buy a new power cord which I did and it still didn't work. They then told me it is probably the power supply module and I should send it out to be fixed.

The Westinghouse tech support people were very nice but told me since it isn't under warranty I'd have to pay to fix it. I agree with the other reviewer who said this is far too expensive a tv to be a throwaway. It makes me very suspicious when products die just outside their warranty periods, especially since this exact same thing has happened to someone else. I own a few other Westinghouse products that have been fairly reliable, it could be that this specific model is defective. If thinking about purchasing this model- I definitely would NOT.

1 out of 5 stars Great While It Lasts but Get an Extended Warranty.......2007-03-21

I purchased this tv in February of 2006. Approximately two weeks after the manufacturer's 1-year warranty expired the tv died as well. Apparantly the tv's power supply module bit the dust.

I tried contacting Westinghouse through their on-line support web site. After getting no response from their e-mail system I contacted the company via their support telephone network. To the company's credit I was able to connect with a representative almost immediately. The agent was extremely polite and sounded sincere when he said he regretted that he could do nothing for me because the unit's warranty had expired. Instead he suggested I contact a local "Geek Squad" agent since Westinghouse has an established agreement with the organization and they are "familiar" with the product.

Given this turn of events I would be very circumspect about purchasing this or any other Westinghouse electronic product without an extended warranty. The item is far too costly to become a throw away, yet at the same time one needs to be careful not to be taken to the cleaners by repair organizations.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Money.......2007-02-22

I have had this TV for about a year now and I must say that I am pleased with the set. You cant beat what you get for the price in terms of inputs.

The picture quality with DVD wired via a component input is great. The SD picture is so-so.

I did notice sometimes the voice and the pciture do not sync but only when I play certain DVDs

But overall I am happy with the set

4 out of 5 stars GOOD TV FOR THE PRICE...........2006-10-04

I HAVE OWN THIS TV FOR OVER A YEAR.NO PROBLEMS SO FAR...THE PICTURE
IS EXCELLENT IN HD AND DVD; MORE "NATURAL" THAN THE EXCESIVE "TECHNICOLOR"
LOOK MOST TV'S FROM WELL KNOWN BRANDS HAVE.
CERTAINLY THE SOUND FROM THE TV ITSELF IS VERY POOR;BUT WITH THE MONEY I SAVED NOT BUYING THE "TECHNICOLOR" FROM THE OTHER BRANDS;I GOT ME
A GOOD SURROUND SYSTEM FOR DVD'S AND FM.
THE AFOREMENTIONED SYNCRONIZATION PROBLEM BETWEEN THE PICTURE AND THE
SOUND IS TRUE;EVEN WITH SATELLITE TV.I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT AND IS SOMEWHWAT
DISTURBING.
MY FINAL WORDS ARE:IF YOU HAVE EXTRA CASH ON HAND AND LIKE ARTIFICIAL
TECHNICOLOR PICTURES;BUY THE FAMOUS BRANDS...

Westinghouse W32701 27" Widescreen LCD Flat Panel HDTV-Ready TV

Amazon.com Product Description

Sleek and modern in its silver casing, Westinghouse Digital's W32701 27-inch widescreen LCD television will amaze you with its ability to render sharp, vivid images from standard- and high-definition sources alike. The set features a built-in DVI terminal for direct-digital connection with PCs and DTV receivers, and its widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio is specially designed to match the dimensions of your favorite DVD movies and HDTV broadcasts.

The 1,280 x 720-pixel W32701 features an ultrathin, 7.9-inch profile with a 170-degree viewing angle that makes it possible to view a clear picture from almost anywhere in the room--perfect for gatherings and family movie nights. The TV is compatible with everything from standard 480i to 480p, 720p, and full 1080i HD pictures (built-in image scaling adjusts 1080i signals to match the set's 768 horizontal lines).

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p or 720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), screen life (no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning.

The W32701's exceptional 16 millisecond response time (the time it takes the screen's pixels to update themselves with fresh data) delivers crisp images for fast-action moving video and video games. The set also displays the broadest possible range of colors, and with its 500 cd/m2 brightness, produces vibrant images in almost any lighting condition.

Westinghouse Digital's advanced, two-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) functions give you everything from mixed-mode PIP for watching TV and working on a PC concurrently to split-screen viewing and the option to resize and relocate the PIP window. PIP abilities even extend to image swap and audio swap, which lets you switch the sound between the PIP and main screens without rearranging the video windows.

Other connections include an RS-232C control port, component-video (one HD and one SD), composite-video, S-video, RF, and PC (RGB). A headphone jack fosters private listening, and a dedicated subwoofer output lets you enhance your listening with powerful deep bass frequencies. The set's built-in speakers give you stereo audio (with 8 watts per channel) from inputs or broadcast programming. A surround-simulation algorithm produces spacious surround sound from the set's built-in speakers or headphone jack.

What's in the Box
TV, pedestal stand, and user's manual.

1 out of 5 stars Appalling Customer Service.......2007-02-14

Never buy a product from Westinghouse Digital. I purchased a laptop from them and it arrived with major hardware problems. Upon discovering the problem with my computer, I attempted to obtain an RMA number and my call was NEVER returned. Without this number you cannot get anything serviced. After I called 3 times over the period of two weeks, someone finally told me the number and the address. They received my package on January 9, and I have not heard a single thing since then (February 13). Furthermore, everytime I have called to inquire, I have been on hold for an unacceptably long period, and when my call was finally answered, the response was that they knew nothing and would get back to me, which never happened. I have been without my computer for a month and a half now, with no end in sight. It is a gamble to purchase any product from this company, since any factory defect may lead you to lose complete track of your property and spend countless hours on hold and listening to excuses.

5 out of 5 stars Wide Screen Reality.......2005-02-23

The only bad review for this is by someone who doesn't understand Wide screen TV.

A 4:3 TV is a 3-4-5 Right Triangle. Divide the Diagonal measurement By 5 then multiply that number by 3 to get the picture hieght, or by 4 to get the width.

A 16:9 TV is a 16-9-18.36 Right Trangle. Divide the Diagonal measurement By 18.36 then multiply that number by 9 to get the picture hieght, or by 16 to get the width.

Rule of Thumb:
17" Widescreen = 15" 4:3 Picture Height
23" Widescreen = 19" 4:3 Picture Height
27" Widescreen = 22" 4:3 Picture Height
30" Widescreen = 24" 4:3 Picture Height
33" Widescreen = 27" 4:3 Picture Height
44" Widescreen = 36" 4:3 Picture Height

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for the Money.......2005-01-10

I've had this LCD HDTV for about 2 months and have to say that it's not bad for the price. The good points are the TV display is exceptional. Being an LCD, it has a small foot print. You can't beat this LCD TV for the price, it's a great value. The bad points are it doesn't have a universal remote and there is not a universal code for the TV. If you want to use another remote, you have to use a learning remote. It doesn't have a DVI or HDMI ports. This won't matter though if you use component ports. Overall, a great buy on an LCD HDTV.

5 out of 5 stars Great picture / Great Value.......2004-12-01

I shopped for a new TV about a year and got lucky to find this product drop in price to $1,299 last month just as my old 27" Trinitron went dark. What a great value! My Son said it was just like watching TV at BestBuy. Our cable box is also an HDTV tuner so we get over 30 HD channels and you can't get any better picture than this. We're hooked up to a home theater speaker system and going through a lot more popcorn than ever before. I went nuts and bought the new Westinghouse microwave with the barcode scanner and every kernel is popped to perfection now.
I've still got to finish setting up the cable box remote to run everything.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-04-09

So far so good iv'e had this unit about one month and I'm delighted so far.
Strengths: Great picture(Awesome), compared to plasma tv's, not much of a difference. Sound quality is great as well, with built in 8' speakers and integrated surround sound with a subwoofer connection as well.

Weak Points: The remote control is a lil' more complicated than most but if you have a universal remote you'll be okay. It is a bit on the heavy side(about 50lbs) so wallmounting is questionable but if you have the correct brackets you should be fine.

All in All a great value, a lil' cheaper that others in it's catagory. For those who download movies off of the net, it's Ideal for PC use as well as Sat and Cable.

1 out of 5 stars Bad TV plus poor customer service.......2007-07-18

I definately would not buy this TV again. An entire column of pixels failed on the screen and I now have to live with a permanent verticle black line on my screen (panel). Of course this defect occured one month after the 1 year mfg. warranty ended! I contacted westinghouse customer support and they essentially said that I'm on my own. They suggested that I contact their authorized repair company in Denver ( I live in california) about repairs. The repair company said that Westinghouse will not supply new panels to be used for repairs (something about it's not cost effective for older models). I contacted westinghouse again and presented them with my dillema: for $700, I got a TV that went bad in 13 months. On one hand you won't repair the TV because the warranty has lapsed by one month. On the other hand I can't repair the TV becuase you no longer supply the the part (screen) I need. Needless to say, Westinghouse did nothing to help me out...

1 out of 5 stars Low Price = Low Quality + Poor Service.......2007-06-22

I bought this model LCD TV on 9/06 and was pleased with the price and performance. But slowly odd behavior manifested, such as random booting. Then the remote became unresponsive, and the only solution was to switch the TV off/on. Then the remote failed completely, and we couldn't even use the case buttons to power off...we had to pull the plug and restart. A call to Crutchfield (the seller) was made, and a replacement exchange was made in November to my satisfaction.

Well, the replacement unit began its own abnormal behavior within 3 months. It seems to be heat-related, as the screen display will de-stabilize (and become un-viewable) for about 20 minutes after powering on, then clear up after 10-15 minutes. It doesn't matter what the source is (OTH, DVD Player, or computer), the picture goes crazy for approximately the same amount of time.

Called them again, but Crutchfield won't provide a second exchange.

Calling Customer "Service" at Westinghouse, they suggested relocating the TV to a different circuit in the house, stating that "these units are very sensitive to electrical current fluctuations". Well, I tried to relocate the TV throughout the house with No Joy. I purchased a dedicated UPS/Line Conditioner...no luck. Attempts to improve the cooling resulted in no noticeable changes. After these trails, Westinghouse suggested factory-authorized repair (at my cost to ship). A quick Google reveals many horror stories related to people's experiences with Westinghouse's repairs (or lack of completing them). Sorry, I'm not going to spend any more time (except to warn others) or money on this sorry excuse for a television. What else am I to do...move out of my 2-year old home to accommodate a "sensitive" TV? None of the other electronics in my home have any problems.

Every night, the wife gets a garbled-screen reminder of how I made a bad choice in trusting Crutchfield and Westinghouse. And despite being a bona-fide Geek, I find it very disturbing to be woken up in the middle of the night by the TV having switched itself on.

I cannot believe that Crutchfield still sells this, and any other model, from Westinghouse. I will no longer be purchasing from Crutchfield, as they can no longer be trusted.

The Westinghouse brand name has been subverted...please stay away from it!

        1 out of 5 stars Worst TV.......2006-12-29

I bought a Westinghouse LCD TV from Best Buy and it did not work from the first day. The picture froze after 30 minutes. It would not turn on without being unplugged and plugged back in. The picture quality was awsome while it was on though. I bought a Best Buy 4 year service plan and they could not find parts for this TV to service it. If it breaks, it cannot be fixed. I returned it for a refund and Best Buy did not refund the full amount of purchase, even within 30 days! Do not buy this TV!

2 out of 5 stars Was great for four days...........2006-11-28

but on the fifth day, it started acting up. First many bars down the canter. After I unplugged it to try and re-boot it, I got "only" one bar. Talked to Best Buy, and they said "it happens", and that I was lucky it was w/in the 14-day exchange period. Lucky me. What will happen with the next one on day 15, I wonder?

        4 out of 5 stars A Welcomed Surprise..........2006-10-17

I have to say I was very wary as many of you might be when it comes to purchasing a product with a company with little to nil track record. But I did my homework. Scanned all the techie forums, read up on it, and decided even with the problems that might occur (most of which can happen to any LCD TV of any brand) I felt it was a safe buy.

And so far it has been. I've had no problems whatsoever. No dead pixels, no white lines or uncentered, all inputs work accordingly. Haven't checked VGA yet because I need a cord but will soon. There is a line on the side but this only shows up when watching NBC in HD. And mainly only noticeable when it's showing standard aspect 4:3 ratio like commercials and what not.

I don't really have the budget to get something high end, but then again there's nothing wrong with this TV, it can easily compare with any other good TV. If you think HD broadcasting looks brilliant wait till you watch upconverted DVDs in 1080i or HD DVDs. I picked up the Toshiba HD-A1 from Amazon as well and that's another smart purchase. I just wish it had another HDMI input so I could hook up the PC via HDMI to DVI. But I'm ok with sticking with VGA just to not have to keep switching cables and only selecting inputs by remote.
I say if you have the cash to spare go for it. And get an extended warranty either way. It's worth it. Obviously if you have more money to spare you'll go with something more well known. But as a regular joe like myself, it definitely met my expectations and more.
