Amazon.com Product Description

Get the sharpest and clearest images possible from HD and standard TV with the 50-inch Samsung HL-S5087W DLP television, which features a full progressive HD 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution digital format converter for all inputs (and true 1920 x 1080p picture via HDMI). A contrast ratio of up to 10000:1 captures blacker blacks, crisper whites, and images that burst into life. And the high-speed of the DLP chip, with millions of tiny mirrors that switch on and off over 15,000 times per second, delivers a precise, razor-sharp picture. It has a built-in analog/digital (NTSC/ATSC) tuner, offers both HDMI and component video connections, . It also features a smaller footprint than other high-definition TVs (with a "hidden speaker" thin bezel), fitting where many other large-screen HDTVs won't.

Samsung's DNIe™
Samsung's DNIe™ (click for demo) technology offers digital perfection in naturally presented, crystal-clear images that uncover even the most minute detail.

Motion Optimizer: The visual data are automatically broken down into signal and noise and adjusted through a combined spatial/temporal process to eliminate noise and blurring without the slightest damage to the original signal. This guarantees the viewer a picture of astounding sharpness, whether the scene is still or moving.

Contrast Enhancer: DNIe has done away with the unwanted side-effects that conventional contrast enhancement can produce, such as noise boost-up and flicker by developing an algorithm that recognizes over 1 million criteria for applying contrast. Its detail contrast enhancement technology can automatically analyze up to 70,000 local images within a frame, treating the viewer to a picture rich in contrast even in the tiniest details.

Color optimizer: For each scene the color optimizer calculates the saturation of red, green, and blue in the input signal and adjusts it to the shades that the human eye accepts as natural. Even a conventional process like white tone enhancement produces more striking results when when used with DNIe. The end result is a palette of vivid hues and pure white tones to satisfy the most discerning viewers eye.

Detail enhancer: Many viewers complain of the unnatural effect that conventional uniform detail enhancement produces by relying on artificial amplification of the input signal. In contrast, DNIe automatically analyzes the portion to be amplified, detecting and re-processing any noise or defect to bring the viewer a startlingly sharp and lifelike image.
DLP (which stands for Digital Light Processing) uses an optical semiconductor to recreate source material with a fidelity analog systems can't match. While other technologies lose a certain amount of light in transit, the microscopic mirrors in a DLP projection system bring more light from lamp to screen. It also features better color uniformity over time--no burn-in, screen aging or color-shifting possible. It's the leading display technology for products like small portable conference room projectors and professional venue entertainment systems.

This Samsung DLP television employs a Texas Instruments DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors. The DLP chip is faster than any HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on and off 15,000 times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast moving images. It also offers Samsung's Cinema Smooth Gen 7 1080p Light Engine, which creates a picture with no visible pixel structure for a captivating, theater-quality experience. You'll get up to a 10000:1 contrast ratio with outstanding colors and deep black levels.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3-line digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. Samsung's Cinema Smooth 3:2 pull-down film mode corrects for the artificial frames created when films are converted to DVDs. The result is a clearer image without the subtle motion artifacts caused by 24-to-30 frames per second video conversion.

Samsung's 2.6-inch color wheel spins at 14,400 rpm for smooth, fast motion video, and has five color segments for more accurate colors. It achieves film-like transitions without pixel breakup found in slower color wheel designs and slower switching LCD microdisplays. Air Bearing technology also makes it whisper quiet.

Samsung also worked closely with Microsoft to create a special Game Mode that optimizes image quality, sound and response time for more realistic video game play--with just a single touch of a button. The Game Mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response and enhances the sounds of your games.

Other features include:

High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. It produces 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts total). This set utilizes Samsung's Dual Acoustic Chamber System technology, which isolates each woofer and tweeter in its own chamber. DACS is a revolutionary, computer-simulated technology that enhances lowrange sound performance, sharpens mid-to-high-range sound quality, and improves overall sound clarity. It offers the following connection options:

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

SRS TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

What's in the Box
Television, remote control, AAA batteries (2), warranty card, registration card, owners instructions, power cord, cloth-clean.

Warranty
It's backed by a 1-year warranty on parts (including lamp) and labor, with in-home service backed by Samsung toll-free support.

1 out of 5 stars Great TV that broke 1 yr later..........2007-11-17

I WAS really impressed with this TV, loving it like crazy, great clarity in HD mode. Unfortunately, 14 months into it's life, the light engine started going bad. Wound up with a 2 inch black stripe on the right side of the TV. Service man said lots of light engine problems with these, not worth it to repair. Thank God I bought a 4 yr service contract!!!

5 out of 5 stars we love our DLP TV.......2007-10-02

My husband has been looking at DLP TVs for over 5 years and no matter what new technology has come out, or how they have fixed up the plasma's and LCDs he has in the end still decided that DLP is what he wants. The picture is just plain better on a DLP than on a plasma and the picture is at least as good as on the LCDs for a significantly lower price. We have owned this TV for almost a year now and have absolutely no regrets. We picked the Samsung brand because every time we ever went looking at DLPs we always felt that the Samsung picture was the best of any other DLP brand. I do want to add that when we got the TV there was 1 pixel that stayed white. I called Samsung's warranty dept that day (Christmas morning) and they had a local repairman out to our house within a week. He confirmed the problem and ordered the replacement part - was back the day after they got the part, installed it and we have not had another problem. The thing that most impressed me about this warranty service, though, was that Samsung actually called me up about a week after the repair was done to check to make sure that the repair was done to our satisfaction and that the company they had sent to help us was courteous, helpful and professional. Wow! In this day when it seems that business' motto is now, "the customer is NEVER right" I was extremely impressed with Samsung's customer care! Thank you Samsung - we are now loyal customers!

3 out of 5 stars Great picture quality, suspect product quality?.......2007-09-16

I've had this TV for a little over a year now. I purchased it to upgrade from an earlier Samsung DLP in order to get the full 1080p experience for games and movies on my Sony Playstation 3. Overall, I have found the picture quality to be phenomenal. I have tweaked the display settings (but not the service menu settings as some have) to get the right picture for my different sources and room lighting conditions and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Several months ago however, there was a faint line in the corner of the screen as though something were obstructing the light path from the lamp. Irritated, I ignored it hoping it would just go away. And actually, it DID go away after a week or so! However, now I am worried that something plastic melted, drooped into the light path, and finally sank below the light path. What will the long term reliability look like? I am not certain...

Also, just recently the set has begun turning itself off randomly. About 2-3 times per week with heavy usage. More heat problems?

In my opinion, the new trend towards higher and higher definition displays has resulted in lower and lower manufacturing quality. DLPs do not offer the rock solid reliability of traditional CRT sets, which have had decades to mature as a consumer product. These sets are hot, they are plastic, and they consist of brand-new proprietary chip designs and software on all-digital components manufactured by the lowest-bidder. Your mileage may vary, but caveat emptor.

2 out of 5 stars DLP just not quite comparable to others.......2007-06-25

I (like many others who post) did TONS and TONS of research before shelling out the big bucks to jump into the HDTV pool. 2 years to be exact. Last fall, this 50 inch DLP from Samsung sounded like the way to go. Good reviews, affordable, new color wheel, 1080p (future proof), no risk of burn in, etc.

Went ahead and bought it in May. I was disappointed. SDTV simply looks god awful on this thing. Sharpness, color, you name it, it looks way out of whack. Grainy, dull, ugly. And let's face it, there's still a lot of SDTV to be watched out there. Also, rainbowing not totally fixed like product description claimed. Worst of all, quality control issues at Samsung. My set (bought at a brick and mortar) had these watermark like stains running along the top and bottom of the screen. Read a lot about this on other sites, as well as faulty light engines burning out after just several months.

Ended up returning and going w/ the new 50 inch plasma from Panasonic. That set rocks! SDTV looks far better, not so boxy of a set, only a little higher price tag. The trade off is 1080p. The Panny doesn't have it. But before all you out there start thinking of 1080p as the second coming, I suggest you do a little research into noticeable difference in 1080p, screen size and viewing distance. Unless you're an avid gamer (I'm not) or like to sit 5 feet from your 50 inch screen, it might not be so special after all.

As far at the Samsung again, HDTV looked very good, but not as good as the plasma. Plasma is just the way to go for HDTV as far as I'm concerned.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding HDTV and Purchase.......2007-06-09

Purchased the Samsung HL-S5087W 50" 1080p DLP HDTV direct from Amazon November, 2006. Excellent delivery service and setup. The unit has exceptional picture and color quality. Amazon reduced the price a week after my purchase and refunded the difference to my credit card account. Amazon and Samsung are class acts and I highly recommend a Samsung purchase from Amazon.com
