Amazon.com Product Description
The Pioneer KURO PDP-5080HD is a plasma television featuring an exceptionally bright and clear 50-inch screen. With a 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen, this television would be an ideal centerpiece for a home theater system in a medium-to-large-sized room.
Outstanding Video Performance The PDP-5080HD sports a resolution of 1365 x 768 pixels (WXGA), and can display the 768p and 720p formats natively. The black levels on plasma screens are generally superb and this unit is no exception, with blacks that are an intense, deep black and a picture that has very high contrast as a result.
The KURO PDP-5080HD has exceptionally deep blacks for a high contrast picture. View larger. View product details. |
Connect a flash drive to the built-in slot and view photos on the large screen. View larger. |
The display features Pioneer's new ASIC video processing and scaling, which upconverts standard definition and other video resolutions for viewing at the display's native resolution. A variety of noise reduction circuitry ensures a distortion-free picture at all times. Users can manually adjust the color temperature, gamma, and the levels of noise reduction circuitry and filters to fine tune the picture to their exact specifications.
An optical light sensor automatically adjusts the picture for optimal viewing depending on the ambient light in the room, compensating for night and day and for the content of the video, such as sports, movies, or news. The PDP-5080FD also has a film mode that eliminates motion judder and provides smoother playback of film content.
The PDP-5080HD is capable of remembering six picture settings for various A/V selections, with Movie, Game, Standard, Dynamic, and Optimum modes, as well as a user-defined preset. You can also set one of five aspect ratio presets in case you're watching standard-aspect 4:3 television. The television can also be set to auto-size when zooming is necessary.
Connections for all your Components
The PDP-5080HD has a large complement of inputs, including four independent HDMI 1.3 inputs (two with analog audio). Additionally, it has two component inputs, three composite inputs, and one S-Video input. There is a USB connection that can connect a storage drive for viewing of photos. A built-in CableCard slot enables the PDP-5080HD to work with cable services without an extra decoding box. An ATSC and two NTSC tuners are built in and fully integrated for use with picture-in-picture and picture-side-picture modes. The television has outputs for Dolby Digital/PCM, audio, subwoofer, SR+, and headphone. The TV Guide On-Screen programming guide is included as well.
Breathtaking Audio
The PDP-5080HD features a detachable bottom speaker with an integrated digital amplifier that improves the clarity and accuracy of the sound. The amplifier provides 17 watts of power for the two-way speakers and supports SRS WOW/FOCUS/TruBass surround sound.
The PDP-5080HD is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

Picture can't be beat.......2007-12-21
When I saw the price drop on this product due to the fact that Pioneer came out with a 1080p version this year it became a no-brainer to purchase this TV. At 50" the advantage of the 1080p is not worth the extra $$$.
The only small thing I have seen so far is sometimes the audio and the video don't sync perfectly. I have yet to hook up my reciever, so I will see if that corrects the problem.
Bottom line: For the current price, this TV can't be beat.
Pioneer makes the best TV's.......2007-12-19
You get what you pay for. Regular 50" are abt two thousand, pioneers are abt three. Is it worth the price? In my opinion yes.
Here are my $.02
- Minimalistic styling
- Excellent black levels, puts any other TV(including CRTs, to shame)
- per input picture settings
- 4 HDMI imputs!! (trust me, 2 just ain't enough)
- low power consumption(abt 395 watts), low for its size.
- It uses a thin glass technology, so the reflections are singular compared to the double reflection that you get on other plasma screens. Note that it has a anti-reflective coating like others as well.
- 60Hz/72Hz refresh rate, so blu-ray or hd-dvd at 24 frames will be displayed pristine at 24x3=72. No 3:2 pulldown required.
- grabs the TV guide from the antenna, over the air.
- PC input
- orbiter technology so burn-in probably will never happen.
- superior sound with sub-woofer output
- removable speakers if needed
There's a reason why every review(including mine!), consistently rates it excellent.
An awesome TV but....still leaves some things to be desired.......2007-11-28
As far as picture quality goes, this TV is top notch, maybe almost too good. Even on HD DVDs, noise can be seen on this TV during some scenes, especially those showing brightly lit outdoor areas. Part of the reason for this is that my viewing position is only 9.5 feet away, perhaps a foot or two too close. Unfortunately due to the layout of my house there is nothing that I can do about this. Its definitely a point to keep in mind when considering a TV of this size. The only other gripe that I have about this TV is the way the remote functions. It does not have discrete on and off buttons, making it impossible to set up convenient macros on my universal remote. Also, if one bumps a channel key or a number pad button, the TV immediately switches to antenna mode.
On the positive side, the black level is awesome. Blacker than any of the competition. The color saturation is beautiful, the picture quality is great, even when viewing non-upconverted DVDs, and it has more inputs than most people would ever need. I would definitely recommend this product.
For those who want the best TV..........2007-11-24
Anyone who's done any research on hi-def TVs will know that Pioneer makes the best TV in the world (and they price it accordingly). For those who can afford it, this set will make you very happy. Even this 720p set will put 1080p sets from other manufacturers to shame. For most people, a 720p set is a much better value and you will not be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. The only true 1080p content available is Blu-ray or HD DVD and you will still be hard-pressed to see the difference between a movie on a 720p set vs. 1080p. The quality of the TV and its video circuitry is much more important. In fact, SD content will look better on a 720p set vs. 1080p set because the video processor will not have to do as much to "stretch" a SD image over fewer pixels. The reality is that most people will still watch a lot of SD content on their TV for the next 3 to 5 years.
I saw this TV in a "shootout" against other manufacturers and it was no comparison. If you want the best, get this TV and enjoy!

No hassles, no worries with Amazon, worth the extra few bucks.
Absolutely amazing TV.

Amazon.com Product Description
The 50-inch Pioneer PDP-5070HD plasma television delivers large, lifelike images right out of the box, thanks to the built-in ATSC (digital) tuner that can pick up over-air high-def channels with an optional antenna. You can also hook up an HDMI-capable cable or satellite set-top box and enjoy the highest standard of high-definition audio and video--with only a single cord connection. Nicely compact, it features a bottom mounted speaker design that makes it easy to fit into a home theater cabinet with a smaller footprint.
Pioneer's exclusive Crystal Emissive Layer is sandwiched between the plasma glass and the individual light cells. This advanced layer helps conduct energy more efficiently so that each cell can be charged and discharged three times faster than before. Pioneer's Advanced Continuous Emission IV (ACE IV) works in conjunction with the Crystal Emissive Layer in the glass to reduce the visual steps between levels of color, making color transitions smoother than ever before. It also offers both vertical and horizontal ribs that help keep the light focused and concentrated, and prevent it from bleeding into neighboring cells. This cell structure means a brighter, sharper, and more accurate image that consistently reminds you of the reasons you bought a plasma TV in the first place.
The PDP-5070HD features a 1365 x 768-pixel resolution (meaning that 1080p signals via the HDMI connection will be downscaled) and a wide 160-degree viewing angle. This Pioneer PureVision plasma TV uses Pure Drive II, 10-bit all-digital processing that maintains a digital path throughout signal processing. This streamlined Pure Drive process provides an optimal picture with virtually no video noise or loss of quality. Other video processing features include Dynamic Range Expansion (DRE) to further reduce video noise, Advanced Pure Cinema 3:3 pull-down for smooth, natural reproduction of film content, and color temperature adjustment.
This set includes the TV Guide On-Screen interactive program guide, split screen and picture-in-picture (PIP) capability, AV memory selection presets (standard, dynamic, movie, game, and user configurable), aspect ratio control, and V-Chip parental controls. The Home Gallery feature enables you to view photos using the integrated USB mass storage connection.
High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the sides of the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. It produces 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts total). This set offers the following connection options:
- Composite AV (RCA): 4 in (1 side), 1 out
- S-Video: 3 in (1 side)
- Component Video: 3 in (1 side)
- HDMI: 2 in
- RF: 2 in
- PC VGA: 1
- Digital audio output: 1 optical
- Subwoofer output: 1
Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
- Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
- TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
- The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

the perfect vision.......2007-12-08
Hi,
I bought this Pioneer disply unit for my hometheater screening.
i wont talk about how good is this unit as many readers covered that but i will talk about a question that many are asking allot, which is better, the Plasma or the LCD display unit?
Its a tricky question and since the questioner needs to know a quick answer its simply its .... hold on I wont say it now, you must read to the end.
History wise both formats date back to the sixties and even before that time since they where only theories on paper.
You know what's funny about the both formats? in all the since fiction movies they made from the twenties up to the mid eighties, there wasn't any flat screen shown in the space ships or command controls, instead, the CRT screen was the only display unit used. It seems that all science fiction writers didn't had a clear vision for the future display units. Even the great Star Wars movie portraying a very advance civilization had only CRT's.
Now back to our time and question.
Both formats have inn's and out's:-
1- The LCD is best suited for bright places, the plasma display is not, but then not all rooms are very let like the showroom's. Plasma will pass this argument.
2- The Plasma is the best display for moving action and sport channels, the LCD is getting there with new display units from Sharp and Sony.
3- The Plasma have that third dimension 3D look, the LCD totally lacks it.
4- The Plasma have the problem of an image burn in (the channel's logo) if you keep watching the same channel for many hours, the LCD has no problem at all, however many Plasma units come with image burn protection and you need to check out the model number in the net to find if it will do that.
5- The Plasma consume a little more electricity and generate more heat than the LCD panel.
6- Both units can display a very sharp and clear pictures, however the Plasma may have a slight notch over the LCD.
7- Many Plasma units are on sale now with prices lower than the LCD units.
Most LCD display units have a similar and sometime even better contrast than Plasma units, however that was only visible in the showrooms due to the high level of the brightness generated by the showroom's florescent lamps, which have a very negative display on the Plasma display units.
There are allot of other issues that makes the picture of each format Excel's above the other like pixel numbers, contrast level, display usage life and even dealers support, so try to check on those when buying a display unit.
If you watch movies allot, then get a Plasma unit.
If you watch allot of TV shows with resident logos, the buy a LCD unit.
Overall if you want the best out there, then buy the new Kuru plsma disply unit made by Pioneer as its best display ever made to date.
Regards
Riyadh
Still Fantastic - One Year later.......2007-10-17
We spent a lot of time researching HDTVs and where to buy them.
We are very happy with the Pioneer PDP-5070HD and also very happy that we purchased it from Amazon.
Beware of the online resellers, make sure you ask them upfront whether they are an authorized Pioneer reseller. Amazon is. The websites often imply one thing, but when you talk to a person, you find out the truth.
Be sure that whoever you buy from can deliver the manufacturer's warrantee. I talked to 3 online resellers who tried to sell me their own warrantee to replace the Pioneer warrantee. I also had a number of online resellers try to sell me the "upgraded" delivery services for hundreds of dollars.
Amazon delivered the TV at no charge, in under a week. The delivery people called in advance to confirm the delivery time, they came when they promised, they were very professional and carried the TV up a flight of stairs.
The TV itself is outstanding. It has eye-popping HD and almost as importantly, renders the old style low def standard TV channels excellently as well. A number of other HDTVs have big problems showing standard def pictures. Whatever HDTV you buy, make sure you compare performance of both HD and standard def programs.
It looks great in the room as well. The deep polished black color looks very classy and is easy to clean.
The cable card feature is great. You can save a bunch of money because the TV doesn't require an HD set top box.
One minor complaint. We use the V-Chip to filter programs for our children. When the V-Chip filter is enabled, it can take about a second or two after you flip to a channel before the show appears. After the kids are in bed and the V-Chip filter is off, the channels change instantly as you would expect.
It's what I expected.......2007-09-16
This TV is exactly what I expected-- it has a great picture with sharp blacks, vivid colors and high definition. Some of the "local" channels still stink as the picture will only be as good as the feed received.
I really like the extra stuff on this set. The split screen or picture in picture is fun. I like using it when watching two different sports games at once. The snapshot can work when you want to see whether there was a fumble or if he was out or safe at first base.
I have heard that the speakers are great, but I doubt I will find out. They're still in the box. I hooked this set up as part of a theatre system in my basement.
I think plasma TVs are a little pricey. 2000 bones + is a lot of cash to watch television. This might be worth it.
Excellent TV.......2007-09-10
Worth every penny. Excellent picture from any angle and no problem with glare or sunlight. I didn't hook the sound bar onto the monitor, so I can't review it.
720p never looked so good.......2007-08-08
I wavered between the new 1020p 50-inch plasmas and this one and decided on the Pioneer after looking at the different setups at Best Buy and looking at reviews on Amazon and CNET. The new Panasonic 1020p has a brighter picture but it's a lot more money. So I bought this on Amazon even though I was leery of purchasing such an expensive and large item online. I've bought plenty of items over the years on Amazon but nothing like this.
I was impressed by the Eagle delivery (it arrived in 3 days under free shipping; the guy brought it into my house and helped me set it up). I set it up to make sure it wasn't damaged, that everything worked and there were no dead pixels. Everything was perfect.
It's a better picture than what I saw at Best Buy, where it was displayed next to other high-end plasmas and LCDs. Higher priced 1020p plasmas and LCDs have a brighter picture, but under normal viewing circumstances when you are 10-plus feet away from the TV, it's hard to see much of a difference between a 1020p and this Pioneer in sharpness, contrast or rich color. So if you are a videofile, 1020p's will go down in price in 08. But if you don't want to wait and want to save some money on a high-end plasma, this is hard to beat.

Customer Reviews:
Don't buy this radio for Sirius Satellite Service..........2004-02-24
I've liked using this radio so far, and have used it with Sirius successfully, but I would advise those looking for a new radio and want it to work sith Sirius Satellite service to look at Kenwood, Audiovox or another brand that offers Sirius ready units. I've tried to put back this unit in a new car I just purchased that replaced one that had been stolen (and had replaced this head unit as well), and found that the process of finding a receiver to work with this head unit is near impossible. The CR-SRT100 receiver that is necessary for Sirius service with this unit has been discontinued by Panasonic and is only available at places like Ebay. Also, some of the newer satellite radio antennas like the TERK SIR3 are geared to work with a single input receiver rather than the dual input receiver that the CR-SRT100 is. The splitter necessary to connect these antennas to this hard to find receiver is equally hard to find as well. You will spend a lot of time trying to find these parts if you try goind down the route I did. This isn't a radio that you can just take to Circuit City and have them "install Sirius" one afternoon and be done with it. It won't be as simple as that.
I called Panasonic about this, and they just told me that the newer 2004 models of Panasonic head unit models are no longer Sirius ready, so don't count on much future support from Panasonic, even though there don't seem to be any public announcements about this. If you want Sirius Satellite Radio, get another brand like Kenwood or Audiovox instead.
Panasonic and Sirius the best choice!.......2004-01-04
The sound quality is incredible, now I can listen to commercial free radio and the genders that I want, choosing between 100 channels! Amazing
Best Radio Ever.......2003-12-14
This is the best product I have bought in a long time. I now can get over 100 radio channels anywhere, anytime. It is great.

If the wagon's a rockin'...........2007-12-05
Pioneer Premier DEH-P690UB Review
PLEASE NOTE the 690 & 6900 are practically identical units
SUMMARY:
This deck has all the inputs you could want (USB, AUX, IP-BUS, RCA) and sounds great paired with my Polk db6500s. The bass is amazing and a sub is not necessary. It's not the easiest deck to figure out how to use and will most likely require some reading of the manual.
REVIEW / HISTORY:
I have spent many hours researching stereos online and trying them out in stores and finally decided on the Pioneer Premier DEH-P690UB. I've had my 2006 Subaru Outback Wagon almost 2 years now and I think this is the longest I've gone before adding an aftermarket stereo & speakers.
My first idea was to get an iPod or Zen, but I have concerns with the disposability of mp3 players due to how the battery is either irreplaceable or financially unfeasible to replace. From my research these batteries can possibly die within a couple years and no longer hold a charge. I felt this could potentially be more of a hassle then it's worth, although I enjoy playing with other people's players!
Then I got on a DVD kick. I was looking for an inexpensive (
<$500) in-dash DVD player with or without a screen just to be used to play DVDs filled with mp3s. I still think this is a good idea, but I could not find one that had USB input and met my other requirements. Maybe this will become more commonplace in the future.
So then I was back to searching for a cd-deck. My USB requirement narrowed down the field quickly. Since USB handles data and AUX is purely audio, I honestly believe USB trumps AUX and is the key to having a system that will remain current for a long time. Originally I thought I wanted the USB input on the front of the deck for easy access, plus a direct connection to my jumpdrive rather than having a wire in-between. After thinking about this more I realized that since I will be most likely leaving the source (jumpdrive or hard-drive) in the car, then I don't want the wires & device out in the open. So now the requirement was USB in back of the deck. I found the Pioneer 6900 in Crutchfield (a great research tool and they are probably the best online A/V place to order from) and read all the reviews. This sounded like the perfect deck for me.
I went ahead and ordered from Crutchfield a set of Polk db6500 component speakers. I also had to order a Metra face kit, since the audio controls are integrated on the newer Outbacks. I wanted to buy the deck from a physical store just for piece-of-mind in case I had problems with it.
I now have a USB input, an iPod cable which plugs into the USB cable, a 1/8" mini-jack cable which plugs into the RCA ends of the IP-BUS cable, and also another AUX input which is currently not used. I found having RCAs interesting and will be curious to see what I end up having running into the deck. I am currently using a 2gb jumpdrive, which only takes a few seconds to read. The unit does remember where it left off if you unplug the jumpdrive. When using Random, the deck will not remember what was already played when the car is shut off. A workaround I've found is that I just grab a couple hundred random songs from iTunes and then listen to them straight thru instead of using Random. The mp3s sound great; I rip at 192kps. I need to do more testing with hard drives and will update this review when I have more information.
The Multi-Control knob, as they call it, took my a little playing around with to figure out the best way to use it. I was pushing it side-to-side and up and down from the side of the knob, but the best thing to do is to press the knob from the front in the direction you want.
There aren't many buttons on the front of the deck, which keeps the look clean, but at the cost of functionality. For example, you can't easily pause unless you use the remote; functions like random are buried in the menus. All-in-all these are minor inconveniences. Having the inputs in the back will come down to personal preference.
I tried out several decks during my research period and there is no perfect deck, but this is pretty close to it.
I have used this stereo with several iPods, a Sandisk Sansa, and a Zune. The deck controlled the iPods & Sansa no problem. It couldn't read the Zune however, not sure if the Zune can be formatted to be compatible or not.
WISH LIST:
*I like having track time displayed, but this isn't shown on every display setting. I leave it on Artist/Song and I wish track time was displayed here
*Pause button on deck (you need to navigate thru menus to get to it; there is a button on the remote however)
*Redesign of the Multi-Control knob; it works pretty good, but could be better. Sometimes you press at a slight angle, so they could design it to accommodate for this
*List mode remain where you left off rather than going back to beginning
Things you'll want to consider tweaking once stereo is installed:
* Turn off demo mode
* Turn off Reverse mode (this makes the screen "flash" or "blink" and is very distracting at night
* Turn off warning tone
* Turn off auto face open
* Adjust the loudness
* Adjust the bass
* Adjust the custom EQ (for reference mine is set at: 4-3-1-2-3-4-2)
* If you are running a sub then there are several settings relating to that
Quick Tips:
* To get to "hidden" settings:
> Press & hold Source until unit turns off
> Press & hold Multi-Control until menu appears
* Pause = PGM on remote
* Press the Multi-Control knob from the front in the direction you want rather than moving it from the side
Nice upgrade -- a few hard drive caveats.......2007-11-10
I just upgraded from a Pioneer DEH-P670MP, essentially this unit two generations ago. The face plate has been redesigned around the "multi-control," which will take a bit of getting used to, but not a problem so far. The rear AUX input may come in handy, and the 7-band equalizer is a definite improvement on the 3-band of the 670MP. I sort of prefer the manual drop-down face plate of the 670MP, but the motorized face of this unit is an enhancement.
Of course my main interest in this newer model was its ability to play compressed music files from USB devices instead of burned CDs, and I've been very pleased with that aspect of this deck so far. I don't own an iPod, but my Creative Zen Nano Plus (1 GB) fires right up through the USB cable and is quite responsive in the list-scrolling action -- you press the "list" button on the face plate and get a menu of folders (i.e. artist/album) on the screen, which you can then scroll through using the multi-control knob.
The bigger challenge, predictably, is to get a USB-powered hard drive to work. Most important, aside from making sure the drive is FAT formatted, is getting enough power to the drive at initial spin-up. Keeping the USB cable length as short as possible can help with that; I used an 24" USB extension instead of the much longer one supplied, and it's plenty long to reach into the glove box -- actually the perfect length.
I tried a 120 GB WD Passport, which spins at 5400 rpm -- without success. Using a Y-connector and a USB adapter in the lighter to draw extra power I got the "format read" process to begin, but still did not load the files. Finally, I brought my laptop out to the car and connected the Y-cable to that, figuring it might get more juice to the hard drive -- success! Now the 690UB recognizes and loads the WD Passport even without the extra Y-cable connection to the laptop or USB adapter; apparently the two devices just needed a little nudge to get acquainted. The down side is that it takes about 80 seconds to load the 65 GB of files on the drive, with or without the supplemental connection.
Anticipating this problem, I had bought (for less than $35 online) a 40 GB drive (Hitachi) that spins at 4200 rpm, and it works just fine without any nudging. It takes about 35 seconds to load its 20 GB of files into memory, and I can detect just a slightly slower response time while scrolling through the list compared to flash drives, but it's still easy to navigate.
For in-town driving it's probably best to have a USB jump drive of 2-4 GB instead of the 40 GB (or larger?) drive because of the load time issue, though the 40 GB drive will load in the background while another source is selected, so you can listen to the tuner briefly and then switch to the hard drive.
One other concern I had is that the pause button on the 670MP face plate is not retained on the 690UB. But you can pause with one touch of the PGM button on the remote. I also noticed, for what it's worth, that the 670MP remote is compatible with the 690UB, and it has a nice big pause button on it (you can get these remotes cheaply on eBay, and they'll do all the routine stuff). Also, happily, Pioneer has improved the random-play feature on this unit, at least for USB sources. With CDs (as on the 670MP) when you press "next" while in random mode it just goes to the next song on the playlist or folder; for USB sources on the 690UB you go randomly to another song in a different folder, another good reason to move away from mp3 CDs.
Pioneer claims you can use a drive up to 250 GB on the 690UB, but the lengthy load-up for that many files might be a limiting factor. So I think the best solution may be to stick with the 40 GB capacity and, if your music collection exceeds that total and you must have it all with you in the car, buy another drive (or two or three -- they're tiny!). It's also a good idea to organize your file structure with a preliminary level -- by each letter of the alphabet, e.g. -- so you don't have to navigate though all 700 (or however many) folders on the drive. (IPod users have a different navigational interface based on artist, genre, etc.)
I probably won't be using mp3 CDs much any more in the car. With a jump drive and a 40 gig hard drive or two, you should have the right combination of flexibility and capacity.
Great brand, better product and incredible sound.......2007-09-27
Pioneer as a brand is a synonym of great quality and customer satisfaction. I bought this head unit after comparing it with the 680's series and some Kenwood and Alpine options. what did I choose Pionneer? Because the specially designed interfase to connect iPods to car stereo systems.
Worldwide, iPods sales have been increasing in a geometrically rate and the car stereo systems had to be prepared to stand this portable devices. Now you don't need to carry a bunch of CDs (even when they have mp3 files, much convenient than the typical and old audio CDs) but now you have your 60GB or 80 GB (or even the new 160 GB) device full of your music collection.
I was hesitating about the interfase to read the music contained in my iPod. When I plugged in, it was so easy to understand how to scrool through artists, albums, songs or playlists. It's almost the same than you do on your iPod. So, this was a great achive. Now, the incredibly fast speed you can do this: it taked nothing to charge a song or album, this is what I loved the most of this unit... it's so freaking fast!
Well, I can't tell about the CDs because since I installed it on my car, I have not used any CDs... just my iPod and eventually the radio. The radio is not for the typical easy radio users... it stores radio stations in groups of 6 too but you need to call the list to choose between them. You don't have those 1 to 6 numbered buttons any more. I like it.
My conclusion is that I feel absolutly happy with this purchase and don't think on changing it for any other. I'm an average music liker, and as my car does not have any amplifyer or subwhoofer, or whatever, maybe I cannot talk about this device abilities to bear those components. Anyway, I absolutely recommend this unit.
Great Head Unit.......2007-07-18
A while back, I decided that I wanted to listen to my iPod in the car. In fact, it would be the only time I would listen to it. To be honest with you, I am not a huge fan of the iPod, but maybe the 6th generation will change my opinion on that. That, however, is a different review for a different time. After doing a lot of research into integrating it with my '96 Nissan Maxima, the only options were: (a) cassette adapter or (b) FM transmitter.
Turns out that the cassette deck didn't work - I don't know if it ever did, and I had already tried numerous FM transmitters and was not pleased with any of them. So I began to look into getting a new receiver or head unit.
There were a few qualities I was looking for:
1. It had to be unobtrusive.
I didn't want my attention to be diverted from the road nor did I want to have seizures from a fireworks show going off in my car.
2. It had to be classy.
I looked at many other receivers and some had joysticks, some had big plastic parts protruding from them, and just about all them had way too many buttons that all had different backlit colors.
3. It had to have functionality and expandability.
The original reason to get a new receiver was to save my iPod from being sold on Craig's List. I also wanted to be able to at least have the option to possibly integrate Bluetooth down the line.
4. It had to be reasonably priced.
I am down to invest in something great, and my '96 Maxima is in great condition, but being a young person and saving for the future, I am still frugal when it comes to spending money on myself.
The DEH-690UB sold me on its looks. I saw that multi-control knob and the big display and fell in love. In fact when it comes to looks, I think the higher tier Pioneer receivers cannot be beat.
I also liked the features it had: a motorized sliding faceplate, a USB port that is in my glovebox for iPod control (or any other FAT32 formatted mp3 player or hard drive device), a CD player (some of the new receivers don't have them), text display and lots of audio controls. When playing music from the iPod it resumed where it left off if you switched the source or turned off the unit (or car). It also came with a remote that originally I thought was excessive. However, because of the manual transmission, it has come in handy at times. The remote is very "thorough" I guess. You can control everything and more with it, including something called "Direct" where you hit "Direct", the track number you want and then "Direct" again, and it takes you directly to that track.
The expandability with this product is second bar to none in it's class (in-dash CD recievers). I have another AUX in to do what I please with, and I can connect the Bluetooth adapter that will not only integrate my phone, but will also integrate any Bluetooth audio device - even a laptop if you are going on a road trip or something.
Last, the price was very reasonable. I payed $196 dollars for it online.
However, it's not perfect.
All biggest turn off for me was that it is impossible to disable the operational beep. This was confirmed for me by the folks at Pioneer.
The other smaller flaws include:
1. There is no separate power output for the antenna. Hence, my antenna will go up regardless of whether the tuner is selected or not. This is more specific to my car though.
2. The brightness is still a little bright for me even on the lowest possible setting.
3. The iPod controls are labor intensive (when you hit "List" it takes you back to the root of the menu and not to the where you are in the playlist). But what do you expect? You're in a car. Make playlists, and pay attention to the road.
4. The convex shape of the faceplate causes more glare than I would like during the daytime.
And a few things to consider that I was neutral on, but might play a role in whether someone else purchases this:
1. The controls may be too minimalistic for some. There are no radio preset buttons; you must use the remote or the multi-control knob to flip through radio presets.
2. This is a single DIN receiver. If you have a dual DIN openning, you'll probably want to install a pocket or else you'll have a hole in your console.
3. I have yet to try it out the USB connection on anything other than an iPod. While Pioneer says any drive using a FAT32 format will work, you never know until you try.
After a couple months of using it, I would say that overall, I am very pleased with this purchase, even though I might complain a lot about the small things. The price for the amount of features that this comes with is great. However, I would like to see Pioneer come out with better interface controls in the future or possibly a firmware upgrade.
40 Gb in my car........2007-03-16
This review aplies to DEH-690UB and DEH-P6900UB since they are the same. the only diference, is a 2 year warranty and that the premier one, includes the ipod cable and extension, that, as far as i know is optional in the pioneer version.
I bought this unit, because i had an deh-p4800mp with an ipod adapter, and i wanted something easier to manage my 30 gb ipod photo. i new that i had to stay with the ipod adapter, since this unit can only manage an ipod nano or video (5th gen) using the integrated usb. I wanted to use some usb memory also. I installed the unit, and put my ipod to work. It's a lot faster than the previous one, and you can use it the same way you use your ipod (like the click wheel). is not as fast as i wanted, but is fast enough. The sound is excellent and you have a lot of options to tweak the sound the way you want. Then i had an idea, why not try my 40 Gb 2.5 usb hard drive with it? so, i formated it (Fat32) and put some music in it, and VOILA!! IT WORKS! it takes more than 30 seconds to read the entire disk, but then, it's really fast to search, and i mean fast. I will end selling the ipod adapter, and i think even the ipod. So, here are the pros an cons:
PROS:
- Can manage ipods, and the controls are similar to the click wheel.
- Can read USB devices
- Can even read USB hard drives
- Can read MP3, WMA, and even AAC
- Excellent sound and a lot of options for adjusting.
- Built in customizable 2 way crossover (Sub woofer and high pass)
- Can handle a small sub woofer without external amplifier
- Can read the entire ID3 Tags on ipods and usb.
- Scrolling with 3 lines of text.
- Has a Dimer (and for the ones that says that the 6800 doesn't dim the controls, this one does) it also have a brightness control.
- You can put a bluetooth Module , for mobile phones as a hands free
- Excelent Display, Easy to read in every condition.
- Prize / Funcionality
Cons:
- Can only read Ipod Nanos an video. if you have an older one, you need the ipod adapter.
- It says it controls about 250 Gb Maximum, 15000 Songs Maximum, but in the real world, i have about 16 Gb, and it takes a long time to load the library, so i don't want to see it with 250Gb
- Doesn't remember the last position in the list. every time you press the list button, it will start in the beginning.
- This radio, IS NOT for people that are looking for an easy to use unit. I mean, it's easy, but everything is in a menu. I wouldn't put it in my mother's car. This is for Geeks
- The Multi-Control it's a little hard (not much, but there are softer ones) but i think it will get a little softer on the future.
- Lack of Memory buttons on front pannel
- Aux input is located on the rear part of the unit.

Outstanding Video Performance
With a screen as large as this, high resolution becomes more important because it is more possible to view each pixel from a distance. The PDP-5010FD is a native 1080p display, meaning it has a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the highest standard available. The black levels on plasma screens are generally superb and this unit is no exception, with blacks that are an intense, deep black and a picture that has very high contrast as a result.
The display features Pioneer's new ASIC video processing and scaling, which upconverts standard definition and other video resolutions for viewing at 1080p.
The PDP-5010FD also has a film mode that eliminates motion judder and provides smoother playback of film content.
The PDP-5010FD is capable of remembering six picture settings for various A/V selections, with Movie, Game, Standard, Dynamic, and Optimum modes, as well as a user-defined preset. You can also set one of five aspect ratio presets in case you're watching standard-aspect 4:3 television. The television can also be set to auto-size when zooming is necessary.
Connections for all your Components
The PDP-5010FD has a large complement of inputs, including four independent HDMI 1.3 inputs (two with analog audio). Additionally, it has two component inputs, three composite inputs, and one S-Video input. There is a USB connection that can connect a storage drive for viewing of photos. A built-in CableCard slot enables the PDP-5010FD to work with cable services without an extra decoding box.
The PDP-5010FD features a detachable bottom speaker with an integrated digital amplifier that improves the clarity and accuracy of the sound. The amplifier provides 17 watts of power for the two-way speakers and supports SRS WOW/FOCUS/TruBass surround sound.
The PDP-5010FD is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

Pioneer PDP-5010 1080P.......2007-12-24
The Pioneer PDP-5010 1080P plasma HDTV is awesome. The picture is crystal clear. I read all of the reviews for plasma televisions and Pioneer was rated the best. The reviews are absolutely true. The deep black colors are amazing. Since the blacks are so deep, all of the other colors stand out. This costs more than other plasmas, but it is worth it. The set includes more HDMI and Component inputs than you will probably ever use. Also has a PC input which is great. All of the input slots are in the back or on the side of the television. I like this a lot. This makes the front of the plasma very sleek and pleasing to the eye. This is the best looking plasma that I've seen. My brother has the Panasonic TH-50PZ700U and the looks of the Pioneer are just hands down better. The picture is also a step above the highly rated Panasonic. Picture adjustment of the Pioneer is simple; the on-screen menu is easy to use. I was able to hook the Pioneer remote up to my DVD player and my Time Warner cable box so that I can use just one remote. The television comes attached to the stand, which makes it even easier to start using. The bottom speaker comes detached, but is easy to assemble. If you want the best plasma, I highly recommend the Pioneer PDP 5010.
I am fully satisfied with my purchase from Amazon.com. I ordered the Pioneer on Nov 24th (day after Thanksgiving) and it was delivered on Wednesday Dec. 4th. Its estimated delivery date was Dec 3rd, but the shippers called on the 2nd and told me that it would be delivered on the 4th and gave me a time window for delivery and they came as expected.
Best Picture Ever?.......2007-12-21
I've been waiting for the right set to come along before replacing my direct view 40" Sony. Picture quality was my highest priority. When I got a chance to view a demo of the new Pioneer Kuro plasmas, I was impressed.
After discussion, test report reviews and a viewing of the set with my wife, we decided to get the 50" non-Elite model. We liked that the speaker bar was located on the bottom of the panel and not the sides and the set came with a table top stand. We have no need for the Home Gallery option or the advanced tweaking that the Elite model offered.
Once it was set up, we were even more impressed with the set. There's plenty of inputs, adequate picture control and as expected, the picture quality is outstanding. The black level is incredible and really makes the colors 'pop' and the contrast is quite good. We have a light controlled room, so we were able to reduce the default light output level from the 'torch' mode to more reasonable levels.
We get our hi-def signals from a rooftop antenna and they look great. I love to fire up my receiver and listen in 5.1 sound when it's available. (Journeyman, The Unit, CSI and Moonlight all have great sound production.)
The digital tuner works well, the remote has 4 direct inputs for favorite channels and the set looks good even when it's off! It's reasonably quick to display a picture when started from the typical standby mode.
My only nits to pick: I don't care for the PIP function, it's awkward to use and not terribly useful, a far cry from the previous Sony set. The channel changes are a bit slow and the display info that accompanies each change lingers too long. The set does run warm in use, but, that's not unusual for a plasma.
Overall, both my wife and I love this set. It's the perfect size for our application. The picture quality is outstanding and is the main reason we bought this set. Though not 'cheap', it's highly recommended.
Just spend the money.......2007-12-12
After the contrast went out for the second time on our rear projection 53 inch, it was time to "bite the bullet." After looking at LCD's and plasmas, I decided on the plasma, since I primarily watch sports and the hesitation with the LCD wouldn't work. A friend of mine said that the Pioneer Kuro was the way to go and after all the reviews of the different plasmas, I decided to spend the extra bucks and order the Kuro. It was well worth it. The picture is great and will be even better after I unload Time Warner and get satellite. The price was a bit high but withour tax and shipping, it all worked out. I ordered the TV on November 8th and hoped to have it by Thaksgiving. Amazon said it would be delivered on the 20th. It arrived on the 13th. Darn! I was really impressed by the fact that the delivery driver was supposed to wait until the set produced sound and picture. I released him early and called him later when the set was up and running. I had to install the speakers and download the cable information. I would definitely buy a large electronic purchase from Amazon again and am really impressed with the picture quality and especially the contrast..

The Best !!!.......2007-09-09
This unit is excellent. Hey I'm a girl and had no problems installing and setting this up. Very easy. Far exceeds the 8600 model I just took out. The 5v is just what my system was lacking and sounds better than ever. Love it. Just hope it doesn't have opening or ejecting problems like the 8600. If so I'll be sure to repost. I say it's definitely worth the money. With all the features and settings how can your system not sound great.
Very Good, Excelent.......2007-03-20
This is the best cd player that i ever bought, excelent audio, no problems with bluetooth, the fact that i can change the animations, everything is amazing! Worth The Money!
Blaugh Tooth.......2007-02-12
This unit is difficult to set-up and use. The manual is difficult to wade through and apparently has important set-up info incomplete or wrong. All and all, very frustrating. We had to do google searches in order to get needed set-up instructions from some other poor soul who had been down this bumpy road before us. I would not by this unit again and cannot recommend it to anyone.

Excelent Sound, great integration with iPod.......2007-03-10
I install the radio on my civic, with the harness, it sound & looks perfect.
