Don't buy Philips LCD TV Unless You just Want to Test and Return.......2007-12-26

If you think that Philips is a good value, think again. I purchased a Philips TV with 1080p claim on the box and a few months later found out that my TV wouldn't support the true 1080p video (my PS3 with Blue Ray DVD playback) and found out it only support 1080i only in the fine print in user manual(remember there's big price difference between 1080i and 1080p).

I called customer support and was told that they received lots of complaints about their false claims on their 1080p and they refused to do anything (not even give their phone numbers). I was wondering if there's class lawsuit filed against Philips on false claims/advertising!

This is my first big screen. It was super easy to set up, which is important. The stand that came with mine worked perfectly. The picture is great. Watched a DVD last night -- amazing quality. HD cable channels are mesmerizing. I can't stop watching TV.

The unit has a terrible picture even with a HD source and has begun to turn itself off randomly up to 20 times a day. Plan no contacting Samsung Monday but am concerned after reading several sites with same unit and no help at all was given to the people by Samsung. I really wish i had not blown my money on this lemon!!!

great tv for the price.......2007-10-30

This tv is great in everyway just like other reviewers have stated. The reason i gave it 4 stars was because when i got mine, it kept shutting itself off because it was overheating. I checked the exhaust vents on the lamp and noticed the vents were not in place and somehow got disconnected from the manufactur. This is not amazons fault and it is samsungs fault. I reconnected everything and the tv runs perfect with no overheating problems now. Xbox 360 looks awesome on this tv.

Better than my Panasonic CRT Rear Projection.......2007-10-30

I bought this to replace a Panasonic 53" CRT Rear Projection 1080i HDTV that broke after 4 years (fried convergence chip). I heard that this issue is irrelevant with DLP technology, but I will have to replace the lamp on a DLP every 8000 hours or so. The overall picture quality on the Samsung DLP is much better than my last TV. The whites are much brighter; however, the blacks are not as dark. XBOX 360, when set on 720P, is incredible on this TV!

Great TV, Great Price.......2007-10-23

I've had the Samsung HLT5075S 50" for about 2 weeks now, and I'm very happy with the purchase. Setting it up was as easy as could be. The menu system is intuitive. My XBox360 games look AMAZING on it. I've never seen a 1080 model, so I can't compare the picture quality, but the 720 is fine by me.

Are there any downsides to the TV? I couldn't find any major problems. When you turn the TV on, it takes about 30 seconds for the picture to fully light up. The remote control also seems to respond a tad slow. But these are minor issues. Overall, this is a great TV.

A friendly reminder: lightning surges CAN travel through a cable TV connection. Make sure you get a surge protector that can also protect cable and your TV.

So far, so good. I received the tv about a week ago and I was extremely please with the price, the condition of the unit, as well as the delivery. They delivered it to my house and were extremely considerate of my schedule. The tv was as-advertised and so far I have not had any problems. The picture is outstanding. So, if you're not planning on hanging your tv on the wall I would recommend this Samsung DLP. Additionally, it's very light (about 50lbs) so it's not difficult to move or find a place to put it. I looked at the 1080p model of the same tv and didn't think that the increase in picture quality was proportional to the increase in price. I think this is the best TV of it's kind for the price. Not to mention that shipping is free and delivery is flexible and convenient. I would recommend this product and seller to anyone. Circuit City was offering the same tv for $500 more plus $60 for delivery.

Good... with exceptions.......2007-12-20

I gravitate to Philips products, because they tend to be feature-rich for the price, and you can tell that the folks that make these products actually *think* about what they're doing (and probably use the prototypes as well).

This is a great set, but with two flaws:

1. The DirecTV HDR issue with HDMI outputs, as others have noted. I bought these two components with the expectation of getting the best quality possible, but had to fall back on a component cable, which is just sad.

2. There are audio outputs that allow you to pipe your TV audio into external speakers. That said, the TV audio output cannot be linked to the volume setting on the TV. So, if you lower the volume on the TV, the audio output to my speakers stays constant (I have to walk to the stereo and manually adjust the volume, since my stereo remote is missing). Every Sony TV I've ever had has adjustible audio output from the TV... what's up Philips?!?!?

Aside from these two details, I'm happy with my purchase. There are a number of cool features, like a USB input where you can plug in your memory stick and play recognized media files (like MPEGs) directly from the TV. Cool.

Philips: Get me a software upgrade to fix the HDMI issue and I'll change my rating to 5 stars!!!!

Much better than expected!.......2007-12-08

This TV far exceeded my expectations in every way!

When shopping for a new TV, I did a lot of research (LCD vs Plasma, wholesale club specials vs. high-end electronics retailers, resolution, size, etc.).

LCD vs. Plasma:
Right now, both technologies are so advanced that you can't go wrong with either choice. Plasma tends to have slightly richer colors and deeper blacks, especially at deep viewing angles. On this Philips LCD, blacks are rich until you sit at about 60 degrees off-center (which is not a typical viewing angle for TV viewing -- most people will probably not exceed 45 degrees in a typical living room). Even at 60 degrees off-center, the blacks are only slightly gray (kind of deep charcoal gray).

LCD screens typically have a non-reflective finish, so they tend to be better than plasma if a window is near the screen. In my case, I have a huge picture window on a perpendicular wall, so glare was definitely a concern. This TV's screen does amazingly well at blocking out the glare.

Both technologies have a 50,000 hour half-life expectancy (image will degrade by 50% after 50,000 hours). That's almost 23 years if viewed 6 hours per day! Typical tube TV's have a 25,000 hour half-life.

Size:
I have a 12' x 12' sitting area around the TV. I considered getting the 47" model, but am glad I didn't. This 42" screen is a perfect size for my living room. If I had gone larger, poor video sources would produce a less-desirable image.

Image Quality:
Image quality is outstanding on this TV -- especially from an HD video source. It's like looking out a window or moving poster. Love it!

Image quality is surprisingly good when viewing low-quality video sources. I use a Tivo Series 2 and record at 'Basic' quality (equivalent to a VHS tape in EP mode) -- very poor video source! However, this TV allows a substantial amount of video controls to optimize the image, such as softening the sharpness, noise reduction, etc. A key feature that I love about this TV is that many of the video settings (such as sharpness) can be set per video source. So, I have my Tivo set to use a very soft sharpness, while my HDMI sources have a much greater sharpness.

Image Stretching:
Image stretching is outstanding on this TV! Many of the video sources do not have wide screen. Some have cinema screen (extra-wide). This TV detects the black bars on the sides or on the top and bottom and automatically stretches the image to fit the screen. However, it uses some logrithmic formula to keep distortion down to a minimum. That is, it only stretches the middle pixels a tiny bit and those on the edges a bit more. So, you don't end up with short fat people, etc. I've seen image stretching on many other wide screens before and have always been disappointed. This TV however, does it far better than I'd ever expect! I am extremely pleased with it.

Sound:
A few other reviews said that the sound was not that good on this TV. However, I have to strongly disagree. This TV has some of the best sound I've heard on any TV. Now, don't get me wrong -- I doesn't compete with my home theater receiver and speakers. But, for TV speakers, they are excellent! This TV has a graphic EQ, so you can customize the sound to your liking. It delivers a good amount of bass. It knocks the socks off my previous 32" Sony tube TV.

Setup:
The TV does take a very long time to scan channels when you first set it up (about 20 minutes or so). But this is a one-time setup, unless you change cable companies, etc.

When you turn it on, it will run you through a picture quality setup wizard. For each step, the wizard shows you two images and asks you to choose the one that looks better to you. Each step is for a different setting, such as sharpness, color intensity, contrast, etc. I kept choosing the more 'vivid' looking image and ended up with an image that was way too vivid. But then, I went into the menus and adjusted it exactly to my liking (fine tuned it over a few days). I wasn't extremely pleased with any of the built-in color temperature profiles (Normal, Warm, or Cool), so I specified my own with these settings:
- Red White Point: 95
- Green White Point: 117
- Blue White Point: 93
- Red Black Point: 3
- Green Black Point: 0

Other settings are as follows:
- Contrast: 100
- Brightness: 47
- Color: 65
- Tint: 0
- Sharpness: 0 for Tivo, 7 for HD Cable Box
- Perfect Pixel HD: Off (causes a halo around pixels when on)
- Dynamic Contrast: Medium (causes greenish blacks if set on Max)
- Noise Reduction: Maximum
- MPEG Artifact Reduction: On
- Color Enhancement: Maximum
- Active Control: On
- Light Sensor: On (detects light in the room and adjusts image brightness accordingly)
- Picture Format: Automatic (this is the resizing I mentioned above)

Those are the settings that worked best for me -- you'll have to find your own. But the point is that you should play with these settings before saying that the TV doesn't have a good picture. The wizard might not give you the best settings. TV's on display at wholesellers are probably not at all optimized (that's why some of them look so bad).

My Setup:
- Philips 42" LCD 1080p
- Cable with Scientific Atlanta cable box (I hate this product!) (HDMI out)
- Tivo Series 2 (S-Video out)
- Panasonic DVD player (component out)
- Yamaha 5.1 surround sound receiver & speakers
- Logitech Harmony 676 remote (must have for systems with a lot of components)

Absoluetly Amazing TV.......2007-12-07

This is the second HDTV we purchased. The first one was the Philips 42 inch 768p LCD. The 768p set had terrible response time, and anything that moved quickly looked pixelated. We returned the first one, and came home with this one. Wow. What an amazing TV. I've seen all of my friend's set, and the only one that even comes close is the Sony Bravia (which costs 750 dollar more for an equal product). If you put this LCD next to a Vizio, you'd think that the Vizio wasn't even an HD set. I couldn't be more pleased with this TV.

Loads of features but..........2007-12-03

I too bought this LCD at Costco for the price and features, however, I had problems using the HDMI with my new HD cable box (Scientific Atlantic Model DC551P). I then switched to component cables and problem "fixed". Didn't call Philips tech support yet but I suspect that this box is not a supported HDMI device. Once I did get it working with component, I noticed too many picture adjustments while viewing. I think this may be partially my fault with the particular settings I have configured but I have tried to minimize all auto-adjusting features of the tv and I still notice some brightness and contrast levels fluctuations. Third thing I noticed is the overly-long response time switching between a normal to a HD channel and vice versa. Again could be something to do with the cable provider or the cable box, but I literally need to wait like 20-30secs for channel to come up when I switch. Like some other people, I would have thought the remote would be better designed. It's a bit toyish and shows the lack of commitment to the overall design of the tv. The good news is that I have 90 days to return it. Hopefully by then I can work out all these nuances.

HDMI connection issue with satellite HD boxes .......2007-11-27

The HDMI connection issue isn't limited to DirectTV receivers. I just got the top of the line Dish Network HD receiver and I get the same "unsupported video format" problem and the cyclical picture drops (.5 second picture then black screen - repeats over and over). I reported this to Philips tech support and they said to use the component video connections. I told the guy I already am, that is how I can see any kind of picture at all... just wanted them to be aware this is more widespread problem than they think (their FAQ's page for this TV indicates it is for a particular DirectTV receiver - not the case).

Other than that, I like the TV a lot - very good picture, sound quality in stereo mode is good (I didn't care for the surround sound option).

Bad Egg .......2007-10-10

After researching HD products, and believing I had found a good deal, I order the Philips 42" LCD widescreen. After receiving it and setting it up I watched great TV for about 4 or 5 weeks before the power supply crashed and my TV was completely dead. Needless to say I was upset.

3 weeks later the TV is up and running again (at no additional cost to me due to the 1 year warrenty). This could have been a bad egg 1 in every 10,000 tvs have, so I can't say "Philips TVs suck!", but you make up your mind.

Other aspects: Picture is "OK". A nice crisp image that is obviously better than regular TV but it doesn't make me feel the need to worship before it or anything. The TV has a nice feature that will automatically stretch or shrink any analog input size to wisescreen, but it tends to stretch the outer most limits of the picture. This is only a little distracting and not the end of the world. Note: when the TV is displaying Widescreen HD input everything is perfectly sized.

Sound is decent for TV sound.

The TV has a lot of customization settings that allow you to choose preference of mood and cool or warm colors.

The stand the TV comes with is very nice and heavy. the TV tilts with ease to the right or the left. Exluding the Power Supply Melt Down I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5, but if I could do it again I'd look for a different TV. Hope this helps.

Great tv and super customer service.......2007-12-15

I purchased this tv at a local retailer in my area in order to avoid the delivery hassle, and I have to say that I am very satisfied with this purchase. I started using this tv by playing dvds thru my Bose 321 system and the picture looked very good if the dvd quality was high. I had intended to purchase an upconverting dvd player and when I found the Toshiba A2 HD player for $140.00 thru Amazon I bought it because it has HD Dvd playing abilities along with upconverting of regular dvds. I finally got to see what this television was capable of when I viewed my first HD dvd and even the regular dvds look great with this combination of player and tv. The HD dvds are really amazing.

I did have one glitch with this television. This tv had a habit of turning off right about 2 hours after it had been turned on and the sleep timer had not been set. When I contacted Phillips about this problem they could not find a service center that would come to my area to repair my television so they replaced it with a new one. They made arrangement to have the new one delivered to my house and picked up the faulty tv at the same time.

I am very pleased with the televsion and the customer service I received.

Brilliant; stunning; everything one could ask for in a plsama HDTV.......2007-10-09

This is a great TV. The Pixel Plus 3 technology definitely makes the grade -- it's a pixel-matching system that recreates natural imagery and reduces pesky image artifacts -- pixilation (which is discoloration), washout, fade, pixel shift, whatever. Super-high brightness and contrast ratio make for really vivod colors and incredibly fine contrast detail. Looks great while watching movies, sports, etc.

This TV really has urround sound power: Dolby Digital, Dolby Virtual Surround Sound and a 30W speaker system with a built-in digital amplifier. This means, in short, cinema-quality audio. The technology actually simulates rear speakers -- cool stuff.

The 160-degree viewing angles are a little lower than an LCD, but you're going to be able to see the screen with better-than-average clarity at up to a 160-degree angle -- so, almost from a perpendicular angle to the way the TV is facing. That's nice for finding the right seat in the house. The Digital Media Reader and USB port are really cool, too -- you can plug in a digital camera to view high-resolution images or slideshows on your TV screen, or plug in an MP3 player to blast your music in surround sound. Lots of TVs have this, but not one with a sound system like this one.

There's plenty of connectivity: component, composite and S-video jacks for hooking up your old DVD player, VCR, video game system, etc., but the real good stuff is the 2 HDMI inputs -- again, pretty standard -- good for hooking up an HD DVD player, Blu-ray disc player, set-top box, Blu-ray video game system (the only one out there right now is PS3), etc. So, you have the connections you need for the components you have now, and the connections you may want for those HD components down the road.

This is not to mention that there are all sorts of little perks to play with: 7 aspect ratio modes to change the picture for various kinds of programming, active light control for auto-adjustment of the picture for varying light conditions, a 3D comb filter built in for detailed color reproduction and an anti-aging circuit to help reduce pixel burn-in and maintain a longer pixel/lamp life.

If you purchase this model, I think you'll enjoy it!

i love the tv it was everthing i hope for i am very satified this was my birthday present to myself and i just love it i have had it for 2 months and so far i haven't had no problems the only thing i wish was larger for a tv this big is a larger remote box but that is ok because the tv speaks for it self 5 stars all the way. i have never been so satified before from ordering off the internet and amazon.com emailed me all the way letting me know the status of my order i really appreiated that please keep up the good work.terrybroadway from metcalfe ms. very very happy thank you.

Great picture, great price.......2007-09-07

I bought this TV to replace a nine year old 55" Toshiba RP TV. I found this set at many retailers and e-tailers, but Amazon had the best price of any reputable outlet. I needed a 60" widescreen to get about the same amount of picture area that I had with my 55 inch 4:3 analog set.

Pros: It has a much better and brighter picture that any DLP, Plasma or LCD set, with no visible matrix, artifacts, or dead pixels. The picture is so vivid that you feel that you can reach in a touch things, especially with true HD broadcasts. The price was less than half the competing DLP, LCD and Plasma set prices. Amazon even delivered it to my living room and unboxed it for free. It sits on the floor so I did not have to buy any expensive credenza as I would have to with the competing technologies. Even though it is thicker that the other technologies, when you place those sets on stands or credenzas they occupy about the same amount of space. There are no bulbs or color wheels to replace.

Cons: The set comes in silver only; attractive but I would have preferred black. The audio of my old set was excellent for music, this set is fine for normal TV viewing but you need to use an external stereo for musical performances as the bass can get muffled with the internal speakers. This is true for most competing sets also and easy to live with. The child protection screen cover was very reflective and annoying. I have no children in the household and found that it was easy to remove and store away.

Conclusion: I would recommend this set to anyone seeking a 60" RP set. The CRT technology still outperforms the DLP, LCD and Plasma sets.

Repair issues.......2007-06-30

I purchased the 55" version of this Philips projection television 3 years ago. It was delivered in great shape and I have, to this point, been very happy with this TV.

Problems began with a power outage that took my TV out of service. This television is huge and awkward to move. Some elements and/or modules need to be replaced at a service center (must be taken out of the home). A costly, frustrating dilema to say the least. I still do not have it repaired. NOTE: parts a difficult to locate so I feel that I'm being price-gouged if I give a go-ahead to be repaired.

My recommendation to you if you plan on purchasing a 55" widescreen TV is to purchase a TV with a separate STAND to set it on. Do not buy the one piece large honker like I did.

Other than the repair frustrations and costs -- I loved this television. Now, however, after only 3 years I'm pretty much forced to buy another television because it would cost $600-$800 (atleast) to get this television repaired.

Universal Remote is a Lie.......2007-11-28

I've had my Viewsonic for almost 2 years. The picture is fine. However the fact that Viewsonic advertises the Remote as "Universal" is a lie. Attempting to contact customer support proved fruitless.

It's true it does have "Universal" buttons, but these buttons don't work with any other device. To make matters worse, if you hit the wrong button, the remote will not even work with the TV until you select the TV button.

There are no "universal" codes available for this TV either. I have purchased a Logitech remote to replace the Viewsonic remote, but that proved to be a pain to use also.

I would NOT RECOMMEND this TV to anyone, and I will never buy another Viewsonic product again.

Excellent value in an LCD-HD TV........2007-06-13

This is a very good choice for a smaller LCD television.

Picture is terrific, both tuners are sensitive and quiet, price is right but, yes, the remote makes only a good door stop. But there is hope!

Logitech makes a wonderful remote called the Logitech Harmony 880 remote. Actually they make a number of them that one programs through their website usung your computer and a plug in cord to the remote.

You tell the Logitech site just what products you own and they program the remote in real time. It will even control your gas fireplace! (providing it is remote controlled, of course).

And yes, they will control any model of ViewSonic television. This remote will reduce a five step selection on the VS remote to just one! Can't speak highly enough about the Harmony remotes. If you think about it, if Viewsonic produces a code that works with their televisions, the code is available and Logitech did the research to find it.

So, couple a Harmony remote with this ViewSonic 3760 and you'll be quite pleased.

Returning my 3rd one.......2007-04-12

Viewsonic seems to have a serious quality control problem. Bought 2 for a great price, one wouldn't work at all. Returned it, and the next one they sent was in a scotch-taped together box. It obviously didn't work properly either, so sent it back. Kept one, nice tv, but now about half the time when you turn it on, nothing happens, have to unplug it and the plug it back in. So it's going back, too.
And by the way, the fact that other remotes won't learn View Sonic's remote is a HUGH problem (just ask my wife)

its a nice set and decent price. has quite a bit of inputs and options but here are some of its deficiencies:

1. switching from catv to over the air antenna takes over 5 buttons on the remote.

2. also, when you do get hdmi to use the pip option, it again takes over 5 buttons to either swap or turn it off.

3. i have yet to figure out how to change channels in over the air. there is no button for "." or "-" to get to 7.1 for example.

well there are other quirks but these are the main ones causing me to only give it 3 stars

This set has a very nice picture, as others have noted viewsonic does not subscribe to the universal remote codes so my other remotes dont recognize the tv, you will have to purchase a universal remote with learning function to solve this problem.

A bigger problem is turning this tv off while using the on-board tuner to view an HD channel. Once you try and turn the tv back on you get nothing and have to perform several steps which will take about 1-2 minutes on the clock to make it work.

Customer support first claimed they sort of knew of the problem, then denied it and do not return calls despite saying they will.

I have had several viewsonic monitors before but this TV is a disappointment.

On the other hand if you dont plan to use the on board tuner you will be happy with the picture quality.
