Customer Reviews:
Amazing quality and value!.......2007-09-08
This LCD is packed with great features, fantastic picture quality and connects right to your cable box so you don't need a tuner anyway! It has an easy wheel menu for your settings, you can adjust the picture to the brightness of the room and it's a snap to connect your DVD player and HD and I can even hook my laptop to it for a huge monitor. I can't say enough good things about this product. Olevia is soon to be a force to be reckoned with in the electronics world if they keep coming up with products of this quality and value!
The Olevia 342i is a good buy!.......2007-09-06
The review in Consumer Reports influenced our decision to buy an Olevia and we are very pleased with the monitor. We aren't TV watchers, but we do watch DVD's and the picture quality from this monitor is very good. It's clear and detailed. Also, the monitor is in a very bright room and the picture is not adversely affected by the brightness. And, the good price also made the buy very appealing!

Amazon.com Product Description
Time to update your old-technology CRT TV? Zoom into the future with the technologically advanced yet still affordable 42-inch Syntax Olevia LT42HVi flat-panel LCD TV. It includes both built-in high-definition (ATSC) and 181-channel standard broadcast (NTSC) tuners. With the integrated ATSC tuner, you'll be able to receive off-air high definition broadcasts without the need for an external set-top box. More than just a high-quality TV, the set's PC inputs also make it equally suitable for home offices. It includes detachable speakers that can be mounted either on the bottom or on the sides, and it comes with a table-top stand (optional VESA-compatible wall-mounting kit available).
This LCD TV provides a 1366 x 768-pixel native resolution for a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio for optimal letterbox movie watching and compatibility with 1080p/720p/480p/480i HD formats. It also offers an extra-wide 178-degree viewing angle, super-fast 8ms (millisecond) response time that's great for watching sports, 800 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, and 1200:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.)
The LT42HVi performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. A 3D Y/C digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).
The 50-watt stereo audio system (two 25-watt speakers) delivers ample sound for sports and movies. The iDIVA virtual surround sound provides you with several easily adjustable settings that simulate an array of audio environments. It offers an HDMI connection, which provides an uncompressed transfer of high definition video from a digital video source to a digital display device, as well as the following input connections:
- Composite AV (RCA): 1
- S-Video: 1
- Component (Y, Pb/Cb, Pr/Cr): 1
- PC In (D-Sub 15-pin): 1
What's in the Box
TV, remote control, remote batteries, 1 VGA monitor cable, 1 composite-video/stereo analog audio AV cable, an AC power cord, warranty information, and a user's manual.
Syntax's iDEA Technology (Innovative Digitally Enhanced Architecture) delivers an exceptional solution to digital display complexities commonly associated with color, contrast, sharpness, motion, noise and audio lip-sync. iDEA's suite of built-in and user-selectable video/audio features delivers precise colors, sharp resolutions and audio synchronization through its advanced Digital Sound Processor (DSP).

worst company ever.......2007-12-25
i would give this company zero star's if i could... got a tv from them that broke with in 6 month's. got a new one wit the warranty and they put the rest of the existing warranty on it....then that tv broke again in about seven month's...now i'am stuck with a broken tv.....if you like being disrespected by a company after you buy a exspensive item this is the tv for you...i called costumer service and the girl on the the phone actually said " yeah what cha want" not may i help you with your problem...they hang up on you after leaving you on hold for a half a hour. so here's your warning pass it on to everyone you know looking to buy a flat panel tv this is the worst company ever....
NOT BAD FOR PRICE SENSITIVE BUYERS.......2007-07-02
Low on cash? Want to save some money? Want a decent LCD that will satisfy your input/output needs? Look no more because the Syntax Olevia LT42HVi 42" HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV will do just that.
Pros: Lots of inputs including 2 HDMI 1.2 interconnect (HDMI 1.2 version was confirmed by Syntax customer support). Excellent design and user friendly. Affordable price. The HDMI video quality is excellent. Make sure you get a DVD upconverter or HD/Blu Ray DVD Player, or a cable receiver with HD broadcasting.
Cons: Bad remote, you have to literally point at the corner of the screen to get a signal. Glass in front of the LCD is highly reflective and will impair your viewing pleasures. Resolution only goes up to 1080i. Display for Composite connections are horrible. Video quality from a VCR even turned out better. No toslink (digital) or Coaxial audio interconnect.
Overall performance from personal experience: not bad for the buck especially if you want to save. Enough bells and whistles to last you for awhile.
READ REVIEWS BEFORE YOU BUY.......2007-05-10
First look at the reviews for support issues most are newer since TV's work fine... for a while.
I have purchased 4 Olevia TV's (from 27" to 42") and until recently I would have recommended them to anyone. First there was slow rebates, but I was aware of that problem when I made the purchase. Then it came time for service, and my experience was the same as recent reviews. They are very nice and promise to take care of everything... DON'T BET THE FARM. Just like others have said here, they say parts will be shipped (in my case on the 3rd) then a week or two later you'll find out that parts haven't shipped, or on back order. BIG HINT: If the manufacture of a product has major components on back order, your's is not the only one broke.
I've bought 4, but Olevia has got the last dollar from me and if you're smart they wouldn't get your first one. I think some retailers like Office Depot and HSN have dropped the line and just selling off stock.
DO NOT BUY! You have been warned.
Olevia 42inch - warranty and CS issues.......2007-03-15
I love the TV when it is working. It has a great picture and sound. My tuner went 2 months ago and I spoke with CS. They shipped the parts and I changed them, I had power supply issues now. They sent more parts and then the in house repairman. The TV still has the same problems. I placed a complaint with the BBB after the first month was over and no response from them.
CS is horrible and no one gets back to you. I finally received a replacement TV, the shipped it by truck from CA to NY, received it broken. You have to wonder if they shipped me a broken one because of the complaint I made to the BBB.
It's been a week since the 2nd one arrived and no phone calls from them. I had to re-do the paperwork and re-give a credit card to place a hold so they can send a new TV. As of today 2 months later I still have no TV and a warranty that is running out soon.
Beware if you have problems you are in for a long hard trip with their CS. No one ever calls you back. Getting a someone to answer the phone will take about 30 minutes, you will get hung up on. BBB is also waiting for them to respond after 3+ weeks into the complaint.
Would give this TV 6 or more stars.......2007-02-24
This LCD TV is awesome. Speakers mounted under the screen mean it will fit into a tighter space than a TV with side mounted speakers. The glass screen with its special coating make the picture brilliant and eye popping. Reflections are only slightly more than a regular LCD screen and not a problem. It also has a HD TV tuner built in, so you can get the over the air HD TV programing.
I would recommend this to anyone. It is the best Syntax Olevia TV I have seen and I already own a 27" & 37" Olevia TV.
Some complain about the remote & speakers, but the remote is better than my other Olevia TVs and I find the sound from the speakers to be very good to excellent.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Wall Mount.......2007-03-23
This Wall Mount works and hold's great. I used it for an Olevia 542I LCD Flat Panel and have had no problems. The instructions are not all that clear, but it is not hard to figure out how to install
adequate....................2007-03-08
The instructions were not real clear , but a person with an average amount of mechanical knowledge would have no problem . My main complaint was the 3/16 diameter screws used to fasten the bracket to the Olivea LCD .The 37 " weights in just under 50 lbs . The WM30D comes with an assortment of larger bolts , but they would not work with the Olivea .Other than that the WM30D is well made and adequate .
No Intructions = Confusion.......2007-02-12
I bought this and had to take it back as it did not come with any instructions on how to install it, plus there are a large number of extra parts to make it compatible with a wide range of LCD/TV's. However, how am I supposed to know which parts go with my TV? The quality of the wallmount itself seemed to be fine, but I will never know how well it would hold up because I couldn't get it installed.

Customer Reviews:
DID LOTS OF REASEARCH- this is a GREAT TV! (though not beautiful design wise).......2007-11-27
I love this TV. As far as picture quality go, it's top notch.
We researched TV's on CONSUMER REPORTS and this one gained great reviews so we went with it.
We have not been disapointed! The picture is crystal clear. There are a few cons though:
1. the look: I personally prefer the look of speakers on the SIDE of the TV, not underneath it. Also, I might have gotten a silver TV, not a black one... but that is just me.
2. some stations have this this strip of fuzziness at the top (looks like static?>) on SOME HD channels. I don't know if this is typical, but it sure is aggravating and it's been there from the beginning. You get used to it after awhile though.
For the price, though, we love it! BEAUTIFUL picture!
Olevia 542i HDTV.......2007-11-15
Actually this is my third Olevia. I own a 27", 37" and now a 42". All three are a great value. The set-up was easy, the picture very sharp w/ my Direct TV. I have no idea of off-air quality. I wasn't real crazy on how the OSD worked, but I got used to it. Sure, there are other sets that have a better picture, colors, controls, but also at twice the price. The way I view buying TV's these days is why spend a lot of money on technology that will be out of date within a year. Unless you've got money to burn, Olevia deserves a close look.
TV dosn't last.......2007-11-02
Bought this TV last x-mas. Worked well until September. Then we started to notice that the screen had burn in. black lines on the sides of the full screen pictures. Called for warranty service and was told that it would be replaced with in 7-9 days. At 10 days I called and was told it would be replaced 'next week' this has gone on for over a month now. I am in the process of fighting for a full refund at this point. Do not waste your money! Get a TV that may cost a bit more, but will serve you well for years(not just months).
It took me 5 calls and 3 messages to get to speak to a CS manager. Finally spoke to VP of CS. They offered me a cheaper TV to replace the 542i. He said they shut down all their operations to fix business problems. Now I'm trying to get my money to buy a quality TV from a reputable company!
Olevia 42" 542i .......2007-09-18
I looked, waited and researched before I bought. Not only did I think that it was "hands down" the best deal around, when I ordered a DVR to hook up with my cable provider, the agent that took the order, clocked out immediately and ran to the retailer before they closed to buy one for himself. Without the home theater audio system, the stereo sound was great, but with the 5.1 system, I feel guilty...it felt like I stole the entire home theater TV and sound station system! The great system with the add on Philips 5.1 was less than any other brand of 42" HDTV's alone.
Unless you want to immpress your guests with BIG NAME BRANDS, you'd be down right silly to not buy the Olevia!
Great Value, though Heavy.......2007-03-16
Great all-around TV, and everything the average person could want. There's TVs out there with slightly better specs and a more recognizable brand name, but they cost hundreds and hundreds more. I'd guess that more than 95% of people couldn't tell the difference between them if you told them where to look (myself included). I only have two complaints about this TV- first, it's tough to get out of the box due to its height and weight. And second, there's now one TV out there with slightly better specs all around, that weighs maybe 40% less and costs about the same - it's a Sceptre 42" I believe. Haven't seen it in person, but if I could do it over again, I'd have looked into that one and likely would have bought it instead.

Customer Reviews:
stunning picture for less money.......2007-12-11
i got the 242v model a month ago, the one with the spkrs at the sides. it's hooked to a toshiba HD-A3 and displays beautifully all this hd dvd player throws at it. excellent upconverted image: the standard dvd's of gladiator and chronicles of riddick could fool many into believing they were watching hi-def. and the hd dvd's look simply spectacular. it cost me $770 and i cannot imagine paying more for a big name lcd hdtv. of course, olevia is a relative newcomer and we'll have to wait and see about the reliability of their hdtv's, but so far so good (more than...)
Fine For Most But Know The Details.......2007-11-28
This TV had a great picture and pretty decent sound. I picked it up for a really good deal on Black Friday and loved it with one major exception. If you are going to use this TV for "over the air" reception be forewarned that it will not output the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound through the optical or coaxial outputs. I use over the air so this was a deal breaker for me. I made several calls and spent LOTS of time, mainly on hold, with Olevia only to find out they don't have a clue what they are talking about. After the first call the set was returned for another and it did the same.
I've had another Olevia TV with other problems but it output the DD 5.1 fine. If you're using cable or satellite you should not have this problem, just hook directly to the receiver from your cable/satellite box and don't worry about the TV output. If you just want "stereo" instead of surround you can also get that from the output as PCM.
AMAZING!.......2007-08-29
I was a little weary about ordering something so valuable online, but it was the best deal to do. It was shipped to me in three days, and ended up coming in the day before I moved to my new apartment. I was so excited! The Fed-Ex guy told me that they had packaged the tv really well. As soon as I was able to, I plugged it in and everything worked. It is such a great looking tv, and it works AMAZING! I recommend it to anyone!
OLEVIA 242T is a GREAT VALUE!.......2007-07-09
I already owned a 27" Olevia LCD HDTV when I purchased this 42" model - I was not disappointed! I had never heard of the company before I bought my first LCD HDTV a few months ago (27" at a RIDICULOUS price of $459!). The brightness, clarity and contrast are exceptional on the 42". AND, it is TRUE 1080i - not the chincey 720's that are being sold as "HD"!
I have only bought Sony for the past 20 years, but I would say that the picture is AT LEAST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER than the Sony's I looked at in the store. Heck, there's even an adjustment for "Lip Sync" - so if the picture gets out of sync with the sound, you can correct it! Amazing
The ONLY issue is that the Olevia's are so new that you CANNOT ENTER them into your cable box remote or standard "universal remote" using a remote code- there ARE NO OLEVIA (or compatible)CODES in commercially available Universal remotes at this time.
So, you can either use two remotes (one for the cable box, one for the Olevia TV), or do what I did - get the SONY Universal "Learning" remote for $20 at Wal-Mart - this unit actually "learns" the codes from the Olevia remote - you just point the remotes at each other and follow the instructions.
Either way, a small price to pay for a tremendous LCD HDTV!

I had high hopes and wanted to like it.......2007-08-25
I really wanted to like this TV. I bought it for my husband December 2006 as a Xmas present. Right from the first time that we turned it off, it made clicking noises. Customer service said it was cooling down... basically saying it's normal. After a month or so we started having color problems. Yellow, swirly marks would show up where it was bright white... and months later showed up where it wasn't white as well. Luckily (I hope) I had also purchased Target's extended warranty as a back up in case Olevia's warranty would suck (which I was right). I called Target customer service for help and through them I got to Olevia to send out a technician. However, the "parts" didn't come in for a month. So I had to wait a month for someone to come and fix the tv. Well finally the Syntax (Olevia) tv tech came to replace the main board in my tv. The color is great! BUT NOW THE TUNER IS MESSED UP! I call up Target customer service and they say that it is a manufacturer problem, so I call Olevia again. I was directed to try to input channels one by one and save them and see if the tv remembers. Mind you now I am missing SEVENTY-FIVE CHANNELS! I just did 3 to test, and lo, the tv has amnesia. The second step the Olevia tech (over the phone) said to take was to get my cable company to test the signal strength, which could be the reason why I was missing channels. So my husband calls Charter Cable and a cable guy comes out within two days. Nope, nothing is wrong with the signal strength and to top it off, he says, "I've been seeing these Olevia tvs with tuner problems a lot." Step three: If the cable/signal strength is fine, then "it's a tuner problem." These words came from the tech guy at Olevia customer service. So we call them back to tell them we tried steps 1,2 and now it was time to talk about number 3! We were speaking to another tech guy (you can never get the same person as last time) and this guy says to load new firmware. The old firmware might be the problem, he says. We load up the new firmware later (had to wait for husband to help with that) and nope, still missing almost all of my analog channels. My husband calls Olevia customer service this time to tell them of the newest findings. We are asked if we could lug the tv to them so they could look at it. I suppose if I wasn't pregnant and my husband could juggle the 42" tv there without damaging --- SURE WHY NOT? It clearly says in the warranty that if damage occurs during transporting it the warranty is void, so that would be dumb of us. Plus all the packaging, boxing, and shipping would be a royal pain in the a$$ to get and do. The tech then says that they could send out another tech but it might take several weeks or something like that. Tech said he'd call us back to schedule an appt. My husband asked to speak with a manager, and the tech support gave him an attitude, saying no managers were availabe. In order for us to get service, either my husband or I would have to take off of work M-F, because they only service M-F between 9-4. I've already done this. Why do I have to do it again? The first time the Syntax tech came out to replace the main board in my tv he said: If this (replacement part) doesn't work, then you'll get a new tv. Talking to customer service over the phone, that's not the idea I'm getting. I'm starting to feel like I'm going to have to push the Target warranty. Target warranty states that if they fix the same problem twice, and it requires a third repair, then they will issue a Target gift card not to exceed what I paid for it, minus taxes. I had really, really high hopes for this tv. I did a lot of research, reading reviews before buying it. There were lots of excellent reviews out there. Too bad. The worse part is my husband is so mad... saying today, "Never buy these off-brands again!" On Syntax's website, they have a slogan that states that their focus is customer satisfaction. With so many customers recently venting about bad customer support... Olevia/Syntax is failing in that respect. Again I must reiterate, I really wanted to like this tv/brand... but I don't think we'll be purchasing this again, nor will we be recommending it (to anyone we like and respect).
EDITED 10/18/07:
Ok, so the problem is now resolved! I emailed the COO of the corporation and immediately balls started rolling and the wheels started turning in my direction! It's a super long story, but the jist of it is - customer service was FANTASTIC and I had a brand new television delivered TWICE to my house. The first one still had issues, but the second one (a different model 242 I think) had NONE - no problems. The techs called on Saturday, came after work hours... was on call to help us with anything we needed. So I suppose the moral of this story is: When the little guys won't help - go over their heads to the CEO or COO of the company! I love my TV! It really is a great TV. I think all companies crank out lemons now and then.
I'd revise my rating to 4 stars for the TV and 5 stars for the customer service (if customer service and quality control is consistent). :)

Fantastic!!!.......2007-12-08
I bought this TV in the day after Thanksgiving sales and thinking it was a great deal. Boy, I got more then I bargained for...the TV is awesome. When I first got it out of the box I was surprised at how light it is. Then when I finally got it up on the wall and plugged in the TV itself picked on roughly about 30 EXTRA channels I have never seen before included HD channels of the majority of the normal free channels (NBC, Fox, ABC, etc...) Let me tell you if you have never seen football or any sports game on HD you'll be in for a surprise. I am not a fan of football, but when I was flipping through the channels and saw the difference between regular and HD, no wonder people want to purchase HD DVD's. I am really considering purchasing HD videos from now on because of how clear they appear. So moral of the story...FANTASTIC!!!, this is a great product.
As good as the leading brands!!! But for half the price!.......2007-11-16
Got this TV from sears for $865 including a tax and 3yr warranty. I was really impressed with it the second I saw the clarity on the floor. I was hesitant at first due to the unpopular brand name. But don't underestimate. Originally I wanted to get an LG, but this TV is comparable in quality. I definitely would like to recommend getting HD Cable to get the full capability of this TV. I cannot believe we paid so low for this TV! My dad has a Sony Viesta Plasma and paid $1600.00 for it, after seeing our TV. He was speechless! He paid way too much for his TV. When you first turn the TV on, don't be disappointed with the sharpness. It's not the TV, it's regular cable. It's like getting premium speakers but playing on a low watt receiver. Get HD. This TV was made for HD. Love it! love it!
Do research on your own, don't listen to sales people. This TV is a 720 but it is 1080 capable. Love it! Better buy one before everybody finds out that this TV is as good as the leading brands!
bought it two days ago.......2007-11-15
i read amazon user reviews on the 32" or 37" model and learned that consumer reports had given an olevia 42" model a best buy rating. had been looking at lcd's for some days now and decided that, for my budget, this 42-incher is an excellent choice. got it at sears for $770. the side speakers make it look bigger than other 42-inchers. the menu looks funny but you get used to it. pleased with the way dvd's look on it, pretty sharp. the directv channels look better on it than on the sony 51" rptv i had. very good color rendition; a lot of controls and inputs; blacks aren't the best on the block but acceptable at this price point. i'm picking up a toshiba hd dvd player in a few days and will let you know how it goes.
[nov. 20th]...yep, got the hd dvd player two days ago and i'm hooked on hd movies: the olevia hd picture is simply beautiful. this month's consumer reports mentions olevia again as a very good inexpensive hdtv.
Great Picture! Spectacular Value!.......2007-09-24
I have never written a review of a product before. But I am just so pleased with this TV that I felt compelled to let others know about it. I must say, though, that I have a grand total of 3 days usage with this TV. So I reserve the right to amend this review later if and as necessary. Still, isn't it nice to know there's no buyer's remorse at this stage?
Having said that, I just want to say that the picture on this unit is spectacular. I have a very bright room, so wanted to go with an LCD as the best option. There are plenty of ways to make whatever adjustments you want to the picture, but so far the only thing I have found necessary is to adjust the position of the screen horizontally by a line to eliminate some edge flutter which appears on some channels...no biggie. And while this TV is advertised as 720p, I should note that I am getting some HD signals through the cable at 1080i. The detail and color are incredible. Some of the plain ol' standard def signals look no worse than on my old TV...but you don't realize how inadequate that is until you get 720p or 1080i signals. I should also say that I am waiting for my satellite co. to install their high def equipment. I have a basic cable subscription for those times when the sat goes out due to weather. During the initial set up of the TV after turning it on (which does seem a bit long, 10-15 seconds!) it scanned all cable channels and now brings in all those channels which were previously blocked on my old TV by the cable company, incl. a number of HD channels. So now I'm wondering if I even need to bother with the upgraded sat system. Will see.
As for sound quality, the sound through the 2 side speakers seems fine for what it is. For those occasions when I went fuller sound, I have it hooked up to my sound system. I tried out the set up with King Crimson's "Eyes Wide Open" DVD. WOW!!! With 2 speakers in the back of the room, and the TV in front, I found that I could actually get a poor-man's surround sound by keeping both the TV sound on as well as the room speakers. Works for me. As for how I have the TV set up itself, while it can be wall-mounted, I instead cleared off the top of my old entertainment center, removing all electronic equipment residing there, and placed the TV on top with its built in stand -- it fit perfectly. And 42" is plenty big for the room, which itself is big; I don't want the TV to be the dominant item in the room, although it now comes close! Oh, as for all my other electronic equipment which used to be setting on top of the entertainment center, they all now fit nicely stacked in it in the space where my old 27" CRT TV used to be. Perfect!
I still have to work on getting the picture-in-picture feature working, which might require a call to Olevia's tech support (which I found out over the weekend is your typical M-F Pacific coast operation). There are features I'm sure will take me a while to use. Haven't hooked up my laptop yet, and couldn't get my digital camera to show, although for the latter that may be a function of my using the wrong connections on the TV or not starting the camera properly. At this point, I'm not worried about it. Will play with those connections when I need or want to.
The main reason for buying the TV was the picture, and that can't be beat. I researched and researched till I couldn't possibly do any more. Looked at quite a few in showrooms, although interestingly never saw this one "live." Basically, made the decision off of reviews, etc. Finally, it came down to this unit and another from Vizio. Also went back and forth between 42" and 46-47". I finally went with the Olevia based upon the features -- incl. firmware upgradability -- and the pricing; figured the 42" size was big enough and now I am very glad I did not get a larger unit. I did not purchase through Amazon though, as much as I do tend to buy through here. Sears was offering $50 off a $999 list price, and if you purchased on a Sears credit card before the end of September they knocked off another $150. So picking up this TV for $799 -- $799! -- is in my mind an excellent value. Ordered through the local Sears store and picked it up when it came in so no delivery charges either. What a deal!
Olevia is a new and upcoming brand. One of their other 42" units (predecessor?) got a Best Buy recommendation from Consumer Reports. While not this unit, it gave the company some cred in my book. The long-term track record of course still needs to be determined. But as a new buyer, I'm a happy camper. 5 stars!
