JVC HD70FN97 70" 1080p HDILA Rear Projection TV

Product Description

JVC HD-70FN97 uses a native 1080p D-ILA device, a 0.7-inch 1920 x 1080 chip, or more than 2 million pixels per chip. Outstanding image quality of both standard and high definition signals is ensured through the use of an optical engine with a dynamic auto iris that responds to scene content to provide optimum black levels and accurate gradation in dark scenes. The set also employs JVC's Genessa 32-bit CPU video processing, incorporating the fifth generation of JVC's D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology). D.I.S.T. seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at full high definition 1080p. Standard definition signals are improved through better IP conversion, improved scalar performance and a PLL system that improves the performance of a composite signal.

5 out of 5 stars Fine TV, especially for the price.......2006-11-02

In early October, we ordered this set through Amazon from Beach Audio. When the set came with internal damage, Kris Freeman of Beach Audio took it all in stride. This FN97 model was out of stock, so he sent us the slightly more expensive FH97 model at no extra charge. The new set was delivered and the damaged one picked up at the same time.

The picure on this set is amazing. My husband was pleasantly surprised. We probably sit closer than most people do, about seven feet away, but with a football game, in HD, WOW. With an travel show of the Grand Canyon, when the helicopter banks, you feel like you have to lean with it.
The internal cooling fan is much quieter than some reviews led me to believe.
There is very little reflection from windows across the room bouncing light off the screen. We like the black thin frame surrounding the screen because of the lack of distraction while watching at night. You can even turn down (or off) the intensity of the blue power button light.
Right now, we have it hooked up with the 1080i component output from the SA 3250HD cable box. We have Knology cable. The HDMI input (this set has two) might be even better.
We have the set sitting on the Plateau CR-2V(64) stand that we also ordered through Amazon. This stand is within one-eighth an inch of the set's width of 64 and one-eighth inches. On carpet, with the spike feet, the stand is about eighteen inches high. The middle of the screen comes out to a little under 45 inches from the floor.

So far, we are very pleased.

As a Home Theater installer I have yet to see any TV with a better picture. Even without video calibration this TV was Stunning. The perfect match for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
There where no visible pixels and HD-ILA will not burn in or drop pixels. I cannot say enough about this TV. You really do get what you pay for.

JVC HD-58S998 58" Ultra Slim 1080p HDILA Projection HDTV

Product Description

The 58-inch HD-58S998 brings a new look to the rear projection TV category. This TV set will easily fit on most stands and furniture designed for flat panel TVs. In addition, the set's unique side heat dissipation design and side connections allow the set to be placed flush against the wall, or even hung on the wall for further placement and d?cor flexibility. An optional JVC stand designed specifically for use with the slim HD-ILA sets will also be available.The HD-58S998 uses three native 1080p JVC D-ILA devices, LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) technology developed by JVC that is renowned for its close pixel spacing, which delivers a bright, high contrast, smooth image. These devices are used in a JVC-developed optical engine that combines a concave mirror with the refracting lens to create a projection angle approximately 138 degrees wider and about 1.5 times greater than previous JVC technology. The wide projection angle reduces the projection distance by about 40 percent, allowing JVC to slim down the set considerably. In addition, compared to other rear projection systems that use a convex mirror, the use of a concave mirror allows the mirror to be positioned lower relative to the optical engine. This results in a shallower cabinet and allows the cabinet area below the screen to be no taller than on other JVC HD-ILA sets.

5 out of 5 stars JVC HD-58S998.......2007-11-22

JVC's HD-58S998 58" Ultra Slim 1080p HDILA Projection HDTV was the first to actually exceed my expectations and meet my needs for brightness and detail for use in an all glass sun room. The only other TV I found to provide slightly better natural colors, but not better details, were the latest Pioneer/Elite plasmas which can only be used in rooms with no reflections. However, the plasmas have potential problems of longevity and burn-in (the screen can retain impressions from scrolling stock quotes for example, such as those on CNBC; and computer games that display frozen or semi-permanent images.)

Also on hand I have a 32 inch top line Sony Bravia and a 20" Vizio, the last a terrific value and performance in its price range.

LCDs, unlike the plasma variety, have far less reflective screen surfaces, meaning that light from windows and lamps will not reflect back at the viewer and interfere with his viewing.

Among the alternatives for plasma, even the top performers like the aforementioned Pioneer/Elites, are the DLPs (Texas Instrument's "Digital Light Processing" engine.) Most of these use a color wheel, creating rainbow effects that will bother some viewers, but not others. Also, DLPs have far less brightness ability and in well-lit rooms the colors may seem washed out. The LcOs chips in the JVC were developed for high-resolution space imaging, and in many respects I believe they can vastly outperform the DLP variety, even the multi-chip DLP sets.

This new technology JVC RPTV uses three chips, not one, but still, under the best conditions I could see a few motion artifacts and pixelation on shadows. I recommend viewers to reduce and adjust many of the color schemes in the menu (very easy to use); reduce contrast, brightness and sharpness; and set to "On" the NR settings in all the aspect ratios provided by JVC to get the best and most natural "feel" to hi def films and shows. You will find the factory settings far too high (and rich in colors.) If you get a brown out, even momentarily, you'll have to redo the settings, and you'll know when that happens by the overly bright technicolors you'll see when you turn the TV on. However, this is the case for other TVs too. A brownout will reset the settings to the factory settings.

This JVC provides a very realistic see-through viewing experience, very highly detailed, superb blacks and vivid colors. It can appear on the VooM channels as if there were no glass between the viewer and the scene. This effect can be startling, even breathtaking, and very realistic, as if you're viewing the scene through an open window, not through electronics. On some scenes there are pixelation effects in shadows, but not in others, so I cannot resolve whether these are from the TV or the hi def recordings.

On non-hi def films, the video processor shows excellent results, converting NTSC to a very viewable picture -- these on good broadcasts and good film. Overall, the JVC's video processor performance is among the very top of today's offerings.

It does use a heat lamp, so I do recommend getting an extended warranty. I have owned this TV for about six months and have had no problems with it. It provides a fantastic picture under difficult conditions (in an all glass sun room.) Considering the flatness, I expected some barrel distortion from the extended projection angle (as a few have reported using test gear), but I could detect none with the naked eye. It appears that the mirrors JVC uses are truly excellent and the TV provides a great value in this price category...and a performance far above this price category.

I use NORDOST component video cable instead of HDMI for my home theater system. I found the results improved over HDMI.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect HDTV.......2007-06-15

We reviewed the other (nearly identical) model on our show in March and I liked it so much I decided to buy one. I love Amazon.com, that's why the review is also posted here. When I got mine, I was overjoyed. You can check out the full review of the FN model at htguys.com, but here's the conclusion:

What we liked

* Awesome HD picture
* Amazing black levels
* Great, real color
* Excellent detail
* Two HDMI inputs
* Price

What we disliked

* Remote control
* Menu system
* Input switching with the factory remote

Conclusion
The JVC HD-61FN97 is an excellent value. It looks great, does a wonderful job with HD content, a great job with DVDs and a pretty good job with standard definition TV. Blacks are good, contrast is solid, colors are excellent and detail is vivid. We try to look for great values to help you (and us for that matter) get a little more out of each hard earned dollar. You'd be hard pressed to find a better looking 61" TV at its price. It really helps bring the big screen home.

5 out of 5 stars Simply THE best regardless of price........2007-04-20

I've owned this display now for about 3 months. Simply put; I could not be happier. The picture is absolutely stunning and flawless. When watching Discovery HD on my DirecTV HD receiver; you are there! At the time of this writing Discovery HD is about 3 weeks into their "Planet Earth" series and to see the beauty of this incredible program on this display is quite frankly mind-boggling. Even the sound on the internal speakers which I only use occasionaly is great for internal TV speakers. The blue light on the front that some seem to be a little disturbed about that it could distract them is not distracting to me at all, but if it distracts you, it can be dimmed or turned off completely; so that is not an issue. The fan is as quiet as you're going to get and can only barely be heard with the volume completely down, and the wife and I sit only about 7 1/2 feet away.

I was offered a choice at the store where I buy of getting the 60" Sony, the 61" Samsung or the 61" JVC all 1080p displays and all at the exact same price...The JVC was in my opinion the hands down winner in picture quality. That said, I'm sure either of the other 2 displays would also make pretty much anyone happy.

In any case, trust me...with this display, and my Parasound pre/pro and amps, Aerial (FL, FR, and center) and Energy (4 rear channels) speakers, 2 15" DefTech subs all set up in a 7.2 configuration...As my wife now says: The theatres are so inferior. Ya gotta love it!

I HIGHLY recommend this display to even the most discerning videophile.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasure to Watch.......2007-03-13

It took me months before I made up my mind about a TV, it was a hard decision to go with LCD, Plasma or Rear Projection. They all looked great but everyone has their own opinion it seemed, but since I wasn't going to hang the TV, I saw no reason to spend the extra, plus the reflection off the other screens would have been too much I thought, and I was 100% right about the choice. Unfortunately I only had this TV For two months before it was stolen while I was on vacation! But it sure was a pleasure to have and I watched many movies on it and they were all great and looked better than movie theater screens....except some with a lot of motion, at times the TV did not process as quick and delay was there but that's with almost all the Rear Projections (even some Plasma) TVs I have seen so far too.

It's a True 1080P and it will be even better once that is implemented but for the price and the look you get, there is no better TV in the market at this time. I am just sorry it was stolen, but I am buying the SAME TV, which should tell you how good it is when you have an option to change your mind after two months. The Stand that I got was also great look with the TV so I am looking at the stand and keep hoping it will be here soon again so I can start ordering my DVDs!

4 out of 5 stars JVC HD61FN97...after very long study.......2007-01-06

I finally made a decision on which HDTV to purchase after a lengthy study. Although I am not taking delivery for a few days, I feel I know this tv very well. Also I hope this review can help others who are considering this unit. I was torn between the Sony XBR2, the Samsung 61" and the JVC. All are 1080p but the Samsung is said to have "wobulation" which is not TRUE 1080p so... I finally decided to purchase the Sony, ($3000) based on all the great reviews this tv had. I also am a believer in the LCOS technology over DLP. Anyway, I couldn't get the JVC out of my mind. Everytime I went to Best Buy to research tv's I kept seeing the unbelievable picture on the JVC. The Sony, no matter what store, never had a great "out of the box" picture, like the JVC. And no, the JVC hadn't been tweaked. When I saw the price included a $300 stand, it was just to financially a plus not to get the JVC. Technically a $1300 differance. I know many will say that the Sony is better but I couldn't deny the fantastic picture I saw at the store. I just can't justify spending $1300 more for the Sony. I'd rather have the extra money for maybe an HD-DVD player. After I take delivery, I will comment on the tv after about a month.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You will be mesmorized.......2007-01-05

Fantastic picture quality, great natural looking colors and surprisingly good sound highlight this wonderful set. Purchased from Amazon 12/22 and we had it by year end, we are thrilled with the performance of this JVC.

A couple of things to watch out for. First, in an incredible display of corporate shortsightedness, JVC decided to cripple the firewire (1394) ports on this TV, mangling them so that they only accept JVC equipment. Pause to consider the magnitude of corporate stupidity here. An industry standard input port, IEEE1394, that they decide should be degraded so that only JVC works with it. So these ports are virtually useless to the average consumer who may just want to hook up, for instance, a Sony camcorder. Why did they stop with just this input. Why didn't they make is so that ALL the input ports only accept JVC equipment. JVC-only HDMI, JVC-only component video, and so on? Maybe because then nobody would buy it?

The other shortcoming is the menu system, which is atrocious, and cumbersome to navigate. Chief complaint here is the "input" selection, which forces the user to scroll through all the choices which takes about 20 seconds since the TV blanks and freezes for about 4 seconds with each change.

All in all, its a state-of-the art picture quality in a very attractive package with a small, tasteful bezel and stand. The sound, should you decide to use it (most owners of TV's like this have 5 channel surround, but occassionally you may find a reason to use the set's speakers) is very, very good.

I'd give this a perfect score, but the foolish waste of the firewire ports and the poorly done on-screen navigations (which, by the way, can be overcome with a smart remote such as Harmony) force me to knock it down bit. I give this one a 95 rating and a definite strong buy recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Field of View and Clarity.......2007-11-30

I have watched this set for a little over a year -- two football seasons. Yet to find a rear projection set that matches the field of view. That includes months of searching before purchase and continued showroom visits since the purchase date. You can watch from either side of the set and not notice the blackening effect of most RP TV's. Plan on a surround sound system for this size screen for full enjoyment. I consider HDILA superior to any DLP set I have seen. Even superior to the more expensive Sony technology. No repair issues in the year plus of fairly heavy use. My connection is cable.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2007-11-20

Delivered on time. Very pleased with the picture (I have an HD satellite hook-up). The speakers are fine, even though I have the audio output hooked up to my stereo for even better sound. Inputs work fine. I have my PC and a DVD recorder/player attached to different inputs and I'm very happy. The fact that you can replace the bulb yourself is a plus! The only drawback I've found is that I can't figure out how to get the video output to work, even after trying to find the solution on the net, so 4 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful picture, simple to use.......2007-08-13

Shipped on time, with delivery into the house. No damage, the driver helped to open it so I could inspect it before signing off on it. The television has a beautiful picture, especially when coupled with an HD signal. The picture is bright, but can be turned down through the on screen controls. The TV remembers the settings for each video input. There are seven video inputs that can be selected. The labels are well marked. The built in speakers are okay, but a TV like this needs a superior sound system to go with the picture.

5 out of 5 stars Great Upgrade.......2007-11-01

This TV is an upgrade for me in two ways. First, I was replacing my 42 inch Sony 42A10. Second, I actually ordered the JVC 56FH96 from Pavilion Electronics.

After not hearing that my order had shipped 5 days later, I decided to contact the seller. I talked to a nice guy named Mitch and he informed me that there was a problem with my order and he was about to call me. I thought, "Oh great..."

Well, it turns out that the '96 was discontinued, and even though the Amazon page showed that the '96 was in stock, they had actually sold out. Before I could argue with Mitch he said, "So if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to upgrade you to the 56FN97 at no extra charge." I told him I didn't think that would be a problem, and he put me on hold for a minute while he made sure he had that set in stock. While I waited I reviewed the '97 on Amazon. He got back on the phone with me and had me confirm the change in the order. My set was shipped out the next morning. Unfortunately I had to wait through the weekend before it arrived, but it was worth it.

The set is great. Right out of the box it wasn't really impressive, but after breaking in for a few hours it really started to shine. Detail is very impressive and black level is much better than my Sony. The only gripe one could have with performance is that colors tend toward green (whereas my Sony pushed the red.) This can be remedied with a professional calibration, or by yourself if you are brave enough to use the service menu (you can learn how to do this on AVS Forum, but you really shouldn't monkey around in the service menu with reckless abandon) Any TV of this caliber really can benefit from a professional calibration though, so you may want to consider adding $300 or $400 to the actual price. Don't get me wrong, the TV has a GREAT picture, but with calibration it can be even BETTER.

I've really never seen a better hi-def image than I have on this set. Watching Casino Royale on Blu-ray was a revelation. Playing games on the PS3 is just awesome. This TV has a great picture whether in a dark room or bright room. Off-axis viewing is excellent.

You may hear people complain of "silk screen effect or SSE" which is when you can see the surface of the screen on really bright images, but to me this is not a problem. What is a problem is watching plasmas, LCDs, or conventional TV's with shiny screens that reflect any and all light. RPTV's like this one have a non-reflective screen. No glare! I'll deal with a little SSE any day.

This TV is phenomenal. I can't imagine that it wouldn't make you happy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Picture and Sound!.......2007-07-23

I paid a premium because I purchased it over a year ago and I bought it at Best Buy (usually not the cheapest). It is a GREAT TV. We love it.

Broadcast HD looks great. OTA HD looks great. Upsampled DVD looks great. The only picture I have seen that looks better is the high end plasma panels. Most plasmas don't look near as good.

I wouldn't change a thing unless I was able to make myself wait until the prices started to drop.

3 out of 5 stars not so great - unfortunetly.......2007-06-27

Best for Gaming with my PS3. Blue ray looks great. EVERYTHING else is not so good at all! even 1080i dvds do not look very good on my sony upscale dvd player using hdmi. analog tv is absolutely horible. it has issue reproducing ANY image that is not 1080p. AND IT DOES NOT UPSCALE ALL IMAGES TO 1080p LIKE IT SAYS IT DOES. (GENESES TECHNOLOGY) ITS BS. IM TRYING TO SEND MINE BACK BUT IT COST 250 TO SENT IT BACK INCLUDING 10 PERCENT RESTOCK FEE. if you want a good all round tv, dont get this.

4 out of 5 stars Good value but leaves something to be desired.......2007-05-19

I looked at this one and the Sony SDX hard and the near $500 difference was just too much. So I got the JVC. It's the 2nd HD TV I bought this year (the other a 32" LCD) so I've got some experience and comparisons right at home.

The JVC color is very bright but there's indeed a green tone like many reviews have pointed out when the picture is dark. It has four preset settings (standard, dynamic, threater, and game). It doesn't seem to remember what you selected last time if you turn the TV off and on again. I don't understand why JVC decided that a contrast control and RGB color controls are no longer needed.

The screen door effect is still there. The Sony SDX has it too but to a less degree. I guess it's something LCD projection technology has to live with.

The fan is noisy as everyone has pointed out. I got used to it after a few days though :)

Regular analog signal programs (cable or OTA) are noticeably worse than on my other HD TV. So if you still plan to watch a lot of analog programs, think twice. Digital signals are great, particularly the Discovery HD and sports program where it's typically bright and colorful.

In all, it's a very good value. I got it at Fry's for $1499. Seems to me that the trend is that the projection TVs are approaching existinction. DLP is certainly on its way out. Only Sony and JVC are making LCD projections. Another 15 to 20% price drop in Plasma and LCD flat panels are probably good enough to kill the projections.

5 out of 5 stars Great deal.......2007-03-09

I was very pleased with this purchase. The television has a beautiful picture and doubles as a computer monitor. A great deal.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great TV.......2007-10-30

I actually bought this TV from Costco (because Amazon wasn't selling them at the time). Be that as it may, this is a GREAT TV. The picture is outstanding and blows away many more expensive TVs. Also, for the size, its VERY light and easy to move around as you find the perfect spot for it. I have had the TV for almost a year and have had no problems and would highly recommend this for someone looking to get into Full HD (1080p)!

1 out of 5 stars Worked Great, Then In For Repair!.......2007-03-05

I purchased this from Amazon in December, and they are GREAT! The TV worked great, but then broke and has been in the local JVC repair shop for 4 weeks! I have never had a problem with JVC equipment before, but this one was a lemon!

5 out of 5 stars Great TV .......2007-01-28

The picture on this tv will blow you away. I bought this from Amazon for 1800$ + free shipping, what a steal. They delivered it in a timely fashion and it worked like it should right out of the box. For the price this tv is much better than an LCD or Plasma.

5 out of 5 stars This picture rocks!.......2006-10-13

We have been looking at HDTV's for over a year now and finally took the plunge with this one. The picture is awesome (I am getting hd local channels with an indoor antenna and you really can tell a huge difference). The Menu is pretty simple and I have a surround system pumping thru the digital optical since my DVD is not hdmi ready. I am looking at the toshiba hd dvd player and will likely add that when my best buy rewards points come. I can't think of one bad thing to say about this set other than it takes a minute or two to warm up (like all rear projections do I understand).

Don't hesitate on this one and you are all set with 1080p for blue ray or HD-DVD!

      4 out of 5 stars JVC HD61FH96.......2007-05-13

      Great TV. Capable of 1080p resolution. Mine has a black spot on the lower left quadrant of the screen. I called to have it fixed only weeks after receiving int. The technician came and replaced the screen, but the spot is still there. Not sure if it is something on the bulb (smudge, fingerprint, etc). If it is, it would have come that way from the factory since I have never had the bulb out. Anyway, it is only noticeable to me, even when I point it out to other people they claim that they cannot see it. Overall this is a great TV with plenty of inputs/outputs.
