Amazon.com Product Description

If you're in the market for a cost-effective digital projector that can shine during your workdays for presentations or classroom use and moonlight on weekends as part of your home theater experience, you'll want to take a close look at the InFocus X2 Multimedia DLP Projector. Featuring a 4:3 format DLP chip in 800 x 600 resolution, a four-segment, 2x speed color wheel, and a manual zoom and focus with a 1.2x magnification, this multipurpose projector can give you a bright, 100-inch diagonal 4:3 image in a range of about 12 to 15 feet.

The Infocus X2 is perfect for the classroom or workplace, as well as any home theater. View larger.
DLP Technology: Superb Imaging and Convenience
The X2 relies on DLP, or digital imaging, technology from Texas Instruments. DLP is entirely digital, which means that you'll never experience image degradation or "yellowing"--better known as color decay--that other imaging technologies experience over time. Projectors based on DLP technology are fully compatible with digital signals--with no analog conversion necessary--making them compatible with everything from digital cameras to gaming consoles. The Digital Micromirror Device that forms the heart of DLP technology is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, giving DLP the advantage of being extremely portable for a wide range of uses.

Features an intuitive keypad on the top of the project for easy navigation. View larger.

Connection panel is located at the rear of the unit. A detailed rear view or view larger.
The X2 provides a stunning 2000:1 contrast ration that offers superb imaging for home video or gaming. The projector's ANSI lumen output is rated at 1600 at full-power and 1100 in low-lamp--and, therefore, lower fan noise--mode. The projector's 200-watt lamp fills your screen brilliantly with 1700 lumens, and in low-power mode it will give you an amazing 3,000 hours of use. The X2 features a maximum projection of 32.3 feet, with at least five feet needed on the lower end. The projector's zoom lens means that images will fit the screen perfectly from wherever the projector is located.

Unlike many other digital projectors that practically require a technical degree to operate them, the InFocus X2 is designed for easy connectivity and use. The connection panel is located conveniently at the rear of the unit. Inputs include one M1-DA port that takes computer RGB, DVI, and HDTV; one S-video port; and one composite video jack. In addition there is one set of stereo RCA audio inputs. The connections are color-coded, making a laptop, PDA, DVD, cable or satellite TV system, digital camera, or game console connection as easy as it gets, no matter where you are.

Convenient, Easy-to-Use Features
The InFocus interface features intuitive keypads, remote controls, and user-friendly menus that deliver one-touch operation. The projector is compatible with DVI, HDTV 1080i, 720p, 480p, and computer resolutions up to XGA (1024x768). With it, you can project NTSC, PAL, or SECAM standard videos from the rear or front. At just 9.8 by 12.9 by 4.2 inches (W by L by H) and 6.8 pounds, the X2 is portable enough to bring home from the office whenever you're ready to kick back to some brilliant video or exciting gaming. And with a built-in 2.5 watt speaker, you won't need to drag extra speakers with you for you presentations.

In short, the InFocus X2 is a multipurpose workhorse that's designed to pull double duty, giving you low-cost, easy-to-use functionality at work, and brilliant imaging for your home theater and gaming needs.

3 out of 5 stars Great except for short life of bulbs.......2007-12-07

I bought my X2 in June of 2004. It has a good picture, and I like the projector for ease of use. However, after 1.5 years, and 700 hours, the bulb blew. I was disappointed, but figured the bulb blowing less than half its estimated life was just bad luck. I paid $300 and got a new bulb. It just blew on me after less than 500 hours. For the price they charge, they need to stand behind their bulbs! A 90 warranty? Are you kidding me!? If they can't give their customers more than 90 days on a $300 bulb, they should lose their customers. I will never buy Infocus again! Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, I never move my projector around or miss treat it. I also always let the fan run for hours after I use the projector to make sure the bulb is cooled completely.

5 out of 5 stars Infocus X2.......2007-08-01

As a K-12 librarian in Menasha, WI, I need to make presentations to classes. In Sept 2005 I bought a brand new Infocus X2. It did a fantastic job. Two months later the school got two projectors so I brought mine home to use as a home theater. For a year my family watched television and movies on the big screen and it was great. When the bulb went out, the cost of replacement lamps sent me into shock. $300 for a bulb? I decided to purchase a 42 inch flat screen TV instead. The projector sits as a possible back-up, if I ever buy a bulb.

3 out of 5 stars Good picture for the price, short life span, bad customer service.......2007-07-18

I too have an X2 for the past 2 years and have now started seeing a verticle shadow on the right side of the screen, as well as the bearings making the "buzz-saw" sound until it heats up. I'm glad I saw this review since I have not been able to find any information about this shadow issue. I had no idea it was due to parts being glued in the hottest part of the device! Yikes! It gets great picture and has been a really good projector for our home theater until this issue. I won't buy another Infocus item because of the service issues and the BBB rating of the company. But it was a great intro home theater projector for the price at the time. Saved us 2 years worth of movie tickets at least. Steer clear of this brand if you want to get more than 2 years of average use out of it.

2 out of 5 stars Good picture, short bulb life.......2007-06-24

This projector provides a good, bright, clear picture. But I've had two bulbs blow out after only about 300-400 hours each. That's about $1 an hour! For this reason, I wouldn't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Projectro!.......2007-06-21

I have the X2 for about 2 years now, and it was an excellent idea to purchase this projector. For the past two years i was using the composite connection to display DVD, until yesterday - when i purchased the M1 to component cable adaptor (thanks to tigerdirect.ca). let me tell you it was a night and day difference! I couldent believe the picture quality. The whites were brighter blacks darker, and color was beautiful! So make sure you invest in the M1 to component adaptor(SP-M1-ADPT). My only wish item for this projector is the 4:3 native resolution - wish it was a 16:9 native resolution. The other thing is the fan. Its a bit loud, but after a while my surround sound covers that up. Other than that amazing projector for the price!

2 out of 5 stars Be good to yourself and buy a different (DLP) model.......2006-04-04

SUMMARY: This projector is a joke in terms of color accuracy and black levels/details. I played with it for a few days, finally gave up, and sent it back.

If you like Infocus then you would be way better by looking at their entry level DLP model (4805). I personally can swear by Optoma though - I have owned two Optomas (H55 and H31) and I have loved them both since more than 3 years ago. Take a look at H31 or their higher resolution models (HD72 or higher if money is not a big issue and you watch HD programming and want every detail to stay there).

DETAILS.
After owning Optoma H55 projector (1024x768, DLP) for three years I bought this SP5000 when Optoma's lamp went over its 2000 hours. My main reasoning was DVI/HDCP input (H55 is not HDCP compliant) and I was hoping that the LCD technology could be at least not too far behind. Man, how wrong I was.

First I was trying to get Infocus's DVI connection work. No luck. Infocus's proprietary DVI-M1 connector requires Infocus-supplied $XXX adapter (yet another joke, $XXX?). I tried to get by and got a third party adapter for 1/3 of the price but it did not work (even though it was specified as completely M1 and HDCP compliant). I gave up, sent the adapter back, and used a component connection.

Now, bad things come in a package. My second issue was that SP5000 had simply terrible colors out of the box (white balance was not there at all). I tried to calibrate it with AVIA calibration DVD for 4 (!) hours and then I gave up yet another time as whatever I did could improve white balance a bit but resulting image still looked bad.

I tried to watch Star Wars Episode I. Dark underwater scenes looked horrible with weird colors (with even visible brightness modulation all over my then 84" DaLite gray (1.0) screen). Shadows... well, there was NO shadows actually, but whatever was supposed to be shadows had NO details in them and looked light gray instead of black. Highlights looked overblown, and the whole picture was a bit blurry (yes, the image was focused just fine, it was video itself that looked this way after 480p to 720p upconversion).

And let me tell you the same DVD looked very, very good on Optoma H55 connected to Denon DVD-2910 player using component input (I used exactly the same setup but Optoma H55 was replaced with Infocus SP5000).

I ended up sending SP5000 back and bought another Optoma (H31). Let me tell you this is what I call excellent colors... After 10 min of calibration and further refinements during watching many DVDs I got it not just simply right but every time I see skin tones from a good DVD I silently say wow to myself.

Shadow details were simply outstanding on Optoma H31. If I watch a DVD on 16:9 screen and there are aspect ratio black bars (right and left of the image in 4:3 format or top/bottom for 2.35:1 movies) then when a scene goes dark I simply cannot tell where my image border is. And this all is in a completely dark room... There were so many fine gradations of black in H31 where SP5000 displayed a plain dull gray image...

Not to mention DVI worked out of the box on H31.

My the only dislike with H31 was initially its screen door effect (I could see pixel borders at 12 feet with 92" screen, which - to be honest - is overkill and is not recommended). It was easily solved by slight defocusing though (did not decrease image sharpness or lowered video quality, just removed visible pixel barriers).

Of course, if this is your first projector and you simply did not have a chance to see anything else you might even like SP5000. It's bright at least.

And yes, I paid for my H31 less than SP5000 costs (and would even pay much more for the quality it provides).

Good luck in your projector hunting.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value for your home theater.......2005-09-11

Five years ago when we bought our house, we never thought we could afford to set up a home theater because a line-doubler projector was costing between $5000 and $10,000... but that changed when good DLP projectors dipped below $1,000. After months of research, I chose the InFocus ScreenPlay SP4805 mainly due to rave reviews and its 4000 hour lamp life (in low power mode, which is the default setting). It's been an exciting experience being able to watch movies, sports and play video games on a 100" widescreen. In my opinion, this Infocus model gives you the most features and the best performance for your money - highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars 80 inch plasma? Better!.......2005-07-08

This DLP projector is the easy and affordable way to satisfy your flat screen desires. All you need is a line of sight from the projector to the wall or screen.

There are many connections, including component and DVI (from the VGA connector). This can project an EDTV picture, but it can scale down from real HDTV.

What makes this unit special are the guts that take those signals and creates an image. The 4800, for example, is cheaper because its image processor is made for slide shows. This is optomized for video. For your money, you won't see a better, large image. Anyway, most DVDs and video games only will go up to 480p (EDTV) anyway.

Product Description

Grab some popcorn, settle into your sofa, and get ready for the big-screen. The ScreenPlay 4800 delivers up to 12 feet of cinematic action. Picture a 200-pound football player charging through your living room. Or a video game character brandishing a sword the length of your coffee table. With the ScreenPlay 4800, sharp, vivid images burst across your larger-than-life screen. Unlike conventional big-screen TVs, you don't have to sacrifice room space for a giant television. Unlike plasma, the cost is affordable. And unlike both, the image size isn't measured in inches - it's measured in feet. So you see every detail in all its big-screen glory. And you never have to leave your own cozy nest.

Amazon.com Product Description

It's the size of the image that puts the theater in home theater. With a screen size of up to 12 feet, the ScreenPlay 4800 makes those so-called big-screens seem puny. Get a true theater for your home, with easy setup and use with your satellite receiver, DVD player, VCR, and more.

A home theater with an image as big as, well, a theater
The ScreenPlay 4800 projector gives you a diagonal screen size that's measured in feet, not inches. As in up to 12 feet (3.6 meters). So big, basketball players will be life-size. And video game characters look like they could actually take you on. An optical zoom lens lets you expand the image to fit virtually any size screen from any location. Wide-screen capability gives you movie-theater format, so you--and all of your friends--won't miss a bit of the action.

Action heroes shouldn't look like action figures
Surprisingly, many home theaters lack a large image display. Only projection can deliver monumental images. Fifty-inch screens seem laughable after you experience the ScreenPlay 4800. This projector will open your eyes to a new image definition and clarity that's far superior to plasma--nothing produces a thinner image than projection.

Detail, details.
Stunning images come from attention to detail. First, Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology from Texas Instruments, the only display solution that creates an entirely digital connection between a source and the screen in front of you. You see maximum fidelity: a picture clarity, brilliance and color that must be seen to be believed.

Then, with Academy-award-winning Faroudja DCDi processing, images are produced with ultimate fidelity: clear and artifact-free, without those jagged lines. DCDi makes your viewing experience so enjoyable, you forget you're watching a screen. The 1100 lumens of brightness and a 2000:1 contrast ratio deliver crisp images that pop. You get large, high-contrast images with unmatched color and consistency.

Incredible movies, games, TV, and more.
Plug in any type of game box to project games so big an arcade would envy them. Or show off your vacation photos from your digital camera or camcorder. Virtually any digital source is compatible with the ScreenPlay 4800. It's also compatible with your VCR, DVD player, or satellite. And you can project from a table top or your ceiling.

Heavyweight features. Lightweight package.
Not that your friends and family will ever give it a moment's rest once they've experienced it, but should you ever want to transport your ScreenPlay 4800, it's easy. Just 6.8 lbs (3.1 kg) and about the size of a toaster you won't need to rent a crew to help you carry it. Just be warned--when friends say they want to "borrow" it, you may never see it again.

5 out of 5 stars Truely Amazing.......2006-03-18

I was looking for a TV for my basement. My brother-in law had made mention to me about projectors. I wasn't sure about that route because growing up around projectors in school for presentations, it didn't look that great. By doing some homework and finding out about the different technologies that projectors now had, I went with the infucos DLP brand. I found the picture to be sharp, colorful, vibrant and clear. It also has many options to change the picture to suit your taste. I truely believe that projectors and infocus will make the conventional tv extinct. It is the best investment I ever made in home entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars In-Focus Home Projector.......2005-12-18

I have owned this projector for 18 months and it is great. The remote is what makes this a great deal. It will adjust the screen projection to wide or full screen depending on the DVD type. I paid $1288.00 for my projector and screen, so this is a bargain.
