Terrific Little Speaker with Clear, Strong Sound.......2007-09-07

After reading several dozen consumer reviews describing laptop speakers I puchased this one. You simply plug it into your laptop, or USB hub, swivel the gooseneck to position the speaker where you want, and you've got an excellent speaker that fits in a small laptop utility bag.

The only complaint I have is that there is no quick volume control; once you've plugged it into your USB port, it overrides the laptop's volume control "knob". You have to open the volume icon in your Control Panel every time you want to adjust the speaker volume, which can be too slow when you're being blasted by a loud video.

This is not to say that there is anything wrong with the volume modulation in the speaker itself, just that there seems to be a wide volume range across items I view--YouTube, email messages with videos from friends, etc.

If this speaker had a volume control knob it would be perfect!

After several weeks of light, mid-volume use, the speaker stopped working on my Dell Latitude D500 and I began receiving error messages noting a "device malfunction". After trading emails with J-Lab customer service, I was instructed to return the speaker by mail (at my expense) for a refund. The refund I received was 80% of the original purchase price because, according to J-Lab, the device was still "working" upon receipt. The representative handling the return acknowledged that there has, in fact, been a history of compatibility issues with Dell laptops-- in other words, a "working" speaker may not always operate correctly when connected to a Dell laptop. Is trying this speaker on your Dell worth the risk of paying two sets of shipping charges, losing 20% of the purchase price, and spending time emailing representatives and repacking/mailing the device? If not, maybe it's worth considering alternatives.

Are we listening to the same speakers?.......2007-08-08

We bought this speaker for our Gateway M505 Media Laptop on a recent trip. The M505 has reasonable speakers for a laptop, but their volume level isn't quite strong enough for us to be happy--we'd always find ourselves straining to hear dialogue from movies.

From reading the reviews I honestly thought this would solve our problem in a nifty self-contained USB-powered fashion.

For us it didn't.

We found the speakers to be nearly identical to the M505 speakers, and while the B-Flex did give us the tiniest improvement in volume, it wasn't enough to really give us adequate volume, or the "big sound" many reviewers have mentioned. Also, there is no way a speaker the size of these can give the kind of frequency response any level of audiophile would be happy with.

So, who should try out this speaker? If you have standard tinny sounding laptop speakers (the almost nonexistent kind), these will be a big improvement. Also you will like the fact that it is USB powered so no batteries, no cords are needed.

However, having said that, I really think the bottom line is, to get truly better sound, you need to use a powered speaker. I think some of the JBL's may be the way to go.

For cost of these guys, unless you catch them on sale, my advice is to keep looking. We had to return ours. (Thanks to Amazon a really fair & generous return policy).

My boyfriend bought me this speaker. It is plug-and-play. On my computer, often movies are not loud enough for some reason and with this speaker it's as loud as we could possibly want. Also I can blast my music throughout the house from my laptop - before I could not because it sounded horrible at high volumes.

I'm not much of a sound expert, but I think it sounds pretty good.

Unless your laptop's soundcard is not working, or your speakers are barely hearable I wouldn't recommend this. Odds are your laptop does as much as these speakers.

It is well built, looks resistant and it does a decent job. Do not expect very good quality.

I like the sound of mine so much I bought one fo my friend for his birthday. It's not super loud but you can listen to music from your mac, with good quality. Just plug it into your USB port. My friend loves his too. He uses his all the time. Great for travel.

I really thought the reviews for this item were probably a little over-blown, but the speakers have proven me wrong. As someone who primarily uses their laptop on the go, I have been looking for a set of small, easily transportable, decent sounding speakers. These fit into all three categories. I am pleasantly surprised by the fullness of the sound that they put out. If you're strictly an audiophile, you'd be better off investing in a good set of Bose headphones, but if you need something to quickly and efficeintly plug and play so other people can hear what is on your laptop, then you won't find a better buy for your money.

Great sound... but there are better options.......2007-10-23

These speakers really do sound great, but they are fatally flawed. The wireless rear speakers disrupt other wireless hardware. My Logitech MX Revolution wireless mouse is impossible to use when these speakers are on, and I've heard that they will disrupt wireless Internet, cell phones, etc. as well, though I can't confirm that from personal experience.

The power cords on the "wireless" rear speakers are also quite fat and long. I had to wrap them around the base of the speakers to hide them, and they still looked unattractive crawling up to a wall outlet. Don't waste outlet space with these fatties, get wired speakers - you have to run long wires, but they can more easily be concealed than these.

I was taken in by the good reviews, but the z-5450 is really not the best option you have. Buy the z-5500 if you were seriously looking at these speakers. The z-5500's have wired rear speakers, so no wireless disruption, you can buy longer wire and conceal it, and the reviews for sound are even better than the z-5450s. I got rid of my 5450s in favor of the 5500s.

This is a great system. I don't know about the other reviews and there problems, but mine works just as promised. I have one of the wireless speakers plugged into the same power strip as my Netgear wireless router and have never had a problem. At my old address, there were several people that had home Wi-fi and it worked fine there to.
The only grip is that the rear speakers output is not adjustable. I would like a little more out of them, but ,even in retrospect, I would still buy this system.

I'm no audiophile, so the sound is definitely good enough for me. Upon first impression I was glad to be liberated of the cables running to my rear speakers. However after awhile I realized how these speakers retained such a flawless connection. Constantly because of the band hopping it will hijack and disrupt other product's wireless signals. Heck! even the LOGITECH G7 mouse doesn't stand a chance, but it's interfered with my ps3 and xbox 360 controllers as well causing massive disconnections. Magically when I turn off the speakers and use my headphones all works flawlessly again.

Don't buy these speakers if you use any other wireless devices at all. However if they are the only wireless devices in your home, it is a sweet system. But my stance is if my other wireless devices can play friendly, why can't my speakers?

Great sound, but beware of little annoyances.......2007-09-04

I purchased a refurbished unit, and the subwoofer was dead. I sent it back for an exchange, and included the control unit just in case. They replaced the control unit as well, and the new one could not be paired with the wireless speakers. Logitech customer support said that the wireless speakers and the control unit are paired at the factory, so if you have to request an exchange, be sure to request the whole set.
After a month of shipping back and forth various parts, I finally have a working system, and the sound quality has not disappointed me.

Impressive room-filling sound PLUS wireless satellites.......2007-07-13

So far I am happy with the sound thumping from the Logitech Z-5450 speaker system attached to my aging computer system. A new Mac purchase will include digital audio output. For now I am listening to stereo iTunes music enhanced by the Dolby Pro Logic II Music feature effect with "Panorama" enabled.

Independent volume adjustment for the subwoofer, surround (rear), or center speakers is a great feature for customizing the sound to the room. Though it's easy to overpower the high notes with the bass, the iTunes EQ can significantly enhance tonal quality. In fact, it's now possible to discern the difference between the traditional 128-kbps iTunes AAC tracks and the 256-kbps iTunes Plus songs -- a distinction that may not be possible with lesser quality speakers. (Note: Remote does not advance songs on iTunes playlists. It controls volume, effects, input source if several devices are connected, and mute with line of sight IR. Each function can also be adjusted on control console.)

There are, of course, cheaper and more expensive sound systems. My factory-refurbished Z-5450 was purchased for about $75 less than the Z-5500 successor. With 315 Watts RMS power (vs. 505 RMS for Z-5500) and total peak power of 630 Watts, this 5.1 digital speaker system has one primary advantage over its younger sibling -- wireless 900 MHz satellite speakers. This was the deal breaker for me. It is not without trade-offs. The "proprietary digital wireless technology offers state of the art clarity and reliability with adaptive channel hopping, redundant transmission of music streams, and low latency using 48kHz sample rates. 96kHz audio streams are re-sampled to 48kHz in the rear channels only." Unless you are comparing the systems side-by-side or an avid audiophile, the downsampled tones in rear speakers will not affect your overall enjoyment.

A prior resident bored two large holes in the living room wall and covered them with speaker grills. On the other side was a storage cabinet with attic access to a power plug -- perfect hiding places for wireless speakers. Initially, I was anticipating just a two-speaker solution to fit behind these grills. Considering the distance from my computer, I would likely have been disappointed with the volume of just two speakers. Happily, I opted for the 5.1 speaker set. With its own pre-amp, sound effect control console, remote control, and wireless satellites, this is the best sounding computer speaker system I have ever owned. I can hardly wait for the true 5.1 experience with digital audio. A few taps on the remote (or console) delivers floor-trembling bass. It is possible to crank the sound all the way up for pleasurable sound without cracking the windows or disturbing distant neighbors.

Bottom line: If you want the freedom to place rear satellite speakers anywhere in the room where there's a power outlet without wiring through the floors, walls or attic, the Z-5450 is a great system. For a totally wired setup, the Logitech Z-5500 offers even more power. Both are THX certified.
