3 out of 5 stars Works well, but one HOT potato.......2007-09-19

The modem works very well for me. It autoconfigured without a hitch and I was up and running at noticeably faster speeds than with my old Actiontec in a matter of minutes. The trouble is, that in those couple of minutes, the thing had already heated up to a surface temperature of around 110 degrees F! That's warm enough that you could get a reasonable first-degree burn if you left your hand on there for a while. I contacted Zoom to see if this was normal and they were very cordial, but did confirm that this particular model (the X5) runs very hot.

In general, the hotter a piece of electronics runs, the less reliable it will be and the shorter its life span will be. Given this, I decided to return the modem and order a Zoom 5615 to replace it. Their rep assured me it would run cooler, but I'll leave a review on that page, too, when it arrives to see if that verdict is true. (Basically, they're the same modem, but the 5615 doesn't have a built-in 4-port switch, which I don't need anyway since I'm hooking it up to a separate wireless router.)

Update: The 5615 takes longer to heat up, but still runs at a worrisome temperature. It was also significantly harder to set up. If you're willing to take the risk on the heat, the 5660 model X3 Dsl 2/2+ Modem/router/gatew would probably be the best bang for the buck. I wish I'd seen it before I ordered the 5615.

1 out of 5 stars WORST MODEM YOU CAN IMAGINE!.......2007-08-30

If I could rate this in the negative numbers, I would give it a NEGATIVE 10. It's that horrible. First the MODEM GETS VERY HOT in a short period of time. Autoconfiguration does NOT work. Even if you get it to work, it could lose its configuration and maybe manually you have to do it. Good luck-you have to deal with Encapsulation, VCI, IP addresss, DNS, DHCP and everything else that you can't understand. TECHNICAL SUPPORT--yeah right. You GOT to be kidding! First of all, it's NOT toll free. You have to pay for the long distance charges. I called up the guy and after an hour (and running my long distance phone card out which cost me $9.95), he said he couldn't figure it out and I said you have to call me back because my phone card is about to expire. He kept on talking-I said, LISTEN!!!! MY Phone card is about to expire-call me back! He said he would. A day and half later he calls back. A DAY AND A HALF--well, I said sorry nobody called me back-I assumed nobody would so I took it back.
And I did. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT. And even if it works for you--it gets pretty HOT.

4 out of 5 stars Good performance, reliable, easy to use.......2007-08-21

I purchased the Zoom after the Westell modem supplied free by Verizon died two months out of warranty. Configuration was trivial - I used the autoconfig option successfully, unlike others for whom it did not work. My phone line is apparently close to the edge in terms of performance, and the Westell processor would max out trying to equalize the line and packet performance would suffer. The Zoom handles the line with ease, and I get consistent full speed operation (768K downstream) even when the line quality is degraded by rain.

All 4 ethernet ports work fine (I have the wireless AP and an 8 port hub daisychained into two of them) and the dozen or so computers in our house have no connectivity problems. Not sure why a reviewer says it connects to only 1 computer. I haven't tried to use the USB port, since it's only needed if the computer has no network port.

The configuration, diagnostic, and status pages are nearly all easy to use and work fine. DHCP server was easy to set up. It did take me 20 minutes to figure out IP filtering - it would have been more user-friendly to have the filter rules display checkboxes for Lo/Med/Hi security settings instead of having to open up each rule individually to see where it is applied. But the IP filtering interface is quite powerful. An easier-to-use filtering interface wouldn't have the same level of control.

I wish Zoom would support Quality of Service on the X5 like they do the X6: a terse 1-line response from tech support said they had no plans to issue a QoS firmware release for the X5.

Only one negative - the Zoom runs quite hot, and if its ventilation is obstructed it might heat up enough to cause early failure like several reviewers have noted with the X6. Mine's sitting on a flat desktop with nothing on top and it's been working fine for a year. I have never had to power cycle the Zoom like I did the Westell; it has run continuously without rebooting for months.

Pros: good DSL performance, easy to configure, very reliable.
Cons: runs hot (but no hotter than a laptop).

I'd definitely recommend this modem to others; I've experienced none of the faults mentioned in earlier reviews.

1 out of 5 stars This Modem has the worst UI I've seen in years!.......2007-08-01

This modenm is a piece of junk.

I spent several hours trying to comprehend it's obscenely obscure user interface (UI) and then, when i finally got it working, it lost all the settings. Four times!

(I am a 30+ year pro, so this isn't a newbie mistake.)

Absolutely the worst product interface and usability i've seen in years.

Don't buy this modem!

1 out of 5 stars Why Bother.......2007-07-30

Modem will only connect to one computer not 2, not 3 not 4 and not the 5 they claim. Tech support.... there is NONE, nada, not a single person to help, not online not by phone and forget email. The company is doomed to failure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Gateway for DSL service.......2007-06-17

I have ADSL internet service using PPPoE and this broadband modem works very well. It supports many protocols in the TCP/IP suite, thus you can control the settings in the many configuration menus and customize your internet connection for your networking and security needs. It is a DHCP server and router, and with a separate fast ethernet switch, you can connect many computer and network devices to your home LAN to share your internet connection. You can customize the security features, for example, configuring pinholes in the NAT firewall, use port filtering, etc. It has excellent displays of the status of your internet connection and your settings, with excellent diagnostic self-tests if something goes wrong. Using the "distributed services" configuration menu, you can provide different priority internet service to the different computers on your LAN. Very cool. The CDROM comes with a very comprehensive manual that is worth reading. I don't understand why this incredible and inexpensive internet gateway isn't on the shelves of all the computer and office stores. Maybe because ISPs provide modems, but they can't be as flexible, sophisticated and packed with geek-fun as this one. When your ISP-supplied modem bites the dust, you can't go wrong with one of these.

I could not get this product to work with my DSL service. I also had difficulty getting support with their customer sevice number - on hold for 10 minutes and then go to voicemail, then don't hear from them for 3 days.

1 out of 5 stars TECH Support .......2007-07-31

Best not to buy from this company. The Tech Support phone numbers are not for this company they are private homes and they are getting very annoyed at getting calls for Zoom Tech support.

5 out of 5 stars GETTING IT DONE.......2007-07-12

I never used it as Quest phone service had hidden charges for high speed so I never hooked it up for service. I can say that if Amazon has to use UPS again though then I would not order anything from them as UPS makes sure that I am the last one to receive the shipment for the day and although I had two day shipping it was on the third day of the work week that I got it at 7:00PM. I called Amazon several times about UPS but they said that they could not ship FedX.

4 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to.......2007-07-05

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because I wasn't thinking when I ordered it and didn't realize that I would have issues with connecting to the wireless network. I had to plug this directly into the main computer, and I haven't had time to figure out if I'm going to be able to share the connection. Since this is USB connection, you can't just plug into a router.

Had I thought about it, I would have bought the model with the integrated router.

1 out of 5 stars Zoom Modem Review.......2007-06-20

This modem was defective because it made my brand new laptop computer unresponsive. I had to call my computer manufacturer for help. With the technician's assistance, my computer's Windows operating system was restored.

    Product Description

The ADSL X5v integrates a full-rate ADSL modem, router, firewall, four-port 10/100 Ethernet switch, USB port, and VoIP phone port into a single cost-effective product. The Model 5565 has a special Local Phone port that lets you use your standard single-line phone for conventional phone calls or free and very low-cost Voice Over IP (VoIP) calls. Because the X5v integrates Internet telephony with a full featured ADSL gateway, setup is easy and system security is ensured. Integration of the voice processing with the firewall and the router ensures reliability of VoIP calls and reduces service provider support requirements. The X5v also comes with the Global Village VoIP phone service that sets up in minutes and lets you simply dial phone numbers and make free calls to devices like the X5v anywhere in the world. And because the X5v uses SIP, the most popular protocol for voice communications over the Internet, you can tap into a rapidly-growing world of free and very low-cost phone services. The X5v's built-in four-port Ethernet switch eliminates the need for a separate Ethernet hub for most home networks and many small offices. The USB port allows direct connection of a fifth computer to the ADSL X5v. By adding external hubs or a wireless access point, the X5v can provide simultaneous Internet access for up to 253 computers. The Local Phone port of the Model 5565 includes an intelligent relay that allows a single phone to place and receive both VoIP calls and calls over the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). PSTN Fail-Over allows the X5v to automatically route calls over the dial-up phone network when power is lost. PSTN support also allows emergency dialing using services like 911 or 112 calling.Setup is easy using any authorized local or remote computer's Web browser and the graphical user interface built into the X5v. Flash memory allows easy firmware updates, including additions to the voice compression codecs.

5 out of 5 stars Great bargain if you need DSL Modem and VoIP.......2005-09-08

Bought the X5V as a backup for my X5. Both wife and I work at
home, so if part of our network goes out, we're hurting.
Th X5V has very similar setup to X5. Even the setup for Global Village
VoIP account was straightforward. The "Global Village Choice" plan
is a pay as you go plan with no minimum usage per month. US rates
are 2.9 cents/minute and international rates are similarly
cheap. Voice quality is excellent. Global Village offers
a $24.95 unlimited usage option also.

The firewall/router features of the modem work great for
a home networking situation. The status screens identifying
ADSL signal strength and error rates work great for diagnosing
in-house wiring problems or (DSL supplier issues).

A great product for someone who needs a new ADSL modem and
would like to try out VoIP services. The price is only
a few bucks higher than Zoom's X5 which does not have the
    VoIP features.

You aren't even locked into Global Village as a VoIP provider.
