This DVD system does not have an aux input, so the speakers can not be used for anything else, unless you have a receiver to directly connect to the 5 speakers. So, I boudght a receiver, but I am not sure the subwoofer works right by itself (in the DVD setup, the subwoofer would receive and redirect all the channels from the DVD). As an entry-level model, it is thus not very useful: who wants to buy a separate receiver, which would cost as much as the whole entry-level system? Just look for a DVD home theater system with aux input if you like to use speakers.

This is the absolute worst electronic product that I have ever bought. The remote constantly sends the wrong signal to the system. I will press the root menu button the stop signal is sent, or if I press the next or previous chapter the setup menu comes up. More and more DVDs that I try and play with this system do not register and they work fine with my other DVD systems that I have. There are also lots of programming glitches that prevent proper use of the system. They were lucky that I had already passed the 90 day warranty. It is strange that all these problems started about 100 days into the use of the product. Customer Support just ignored my problems since I was past the warranty.

I found these speakers at a store in the mall for about 40 dollars. They are nice, compact, easy to hook up, and the sound is very good for being a lower price/ low end speaker system. These are an excellent addition for a spare bedroom/bedroom sound system, or a basement sound system a second entertainment center. For college kids, this is more than enough to sound impressive in a dorm room. Take a look, I don't think you will be dissapointed. A lot of power for not a lot of mula.

I bought this system for my bedroom last Christmas for less than $100. As an inexpensive surround system for the bedroom it works as designed. Although I doubt it has the power or bass for a larger room. The sound quality is fair to good at higher levels (over 20 on the Colby's display)but at 1 to 5 on the display you get static and scratches most noteably from the rear speakers which is distracting and annoying when watching a movie at low volumes. The sub-woofer helps the units lack of real bass but a seperate powered sub-woofer would really improve the sound quality of modern movies. The lack of an on/off button on the remote is a major pain as the Colby lights up at night like a juke box. This problem can't be solved with a universal remote as there seems to be no curcuit for the remote to activate. So you must get up and walk across the room to power the unit down. All in all I'd say for the money it's a good choice for a childs room or the guest bedroom, but for the master bedroom or the living room I'd spend extra money and get a higher quality unit with a powered sub-woofer you'll be much happier. The unit seems to be very dependable as I use it daily and have had no problems to speak of.

Although, it is a cheap low quality product, I did not expected to last less than 6 months. I knew I wasn't buying the best product out there, but it should at least last for a year or so. I would not recommend this product. Save up another hundred dollars or so, and buy a brand known for quality. Hope this helps.

I bought this system about 4 years ago, it worked ok, the sound quality wasnt what I expected but it wasnt bad for the price I paid. Everything was ok until recentally the cd/dvd player went out. The tuner still plays...the bass on it isnt very good but it plays. Also the remote doesnt work the best unless u point it directly into the reciever. If u want cheap for a short period of time this is the product!

My dad received this system for an award at work. Its definitely not top of the line, but it serves it's purpose. It is not a powerful system, paartially because the sub-woofer is not a self powered unit, but draws it's wattage and output directly from the player, like the speakers. But, it does fair in the room we have it in, and my dad enjoys it. If you want something better, you'll have to pay for it. For a basic system, this delivers. Again, So far my other Coby DVD player has done ok for 2 years, and this one is holding up after 8 months, but be aware there are very mixed reviews. If you want one solid home entertainment center, save your money. IF the kids or yourself want a second system for the bedroom area, than this could fill that niche.

I recently bought this home theater and it accomplished all of my expectatives. The sound is excellent and I don't know how this surround system can be so badly critiziced. Althought the problem with the remote controller is somehow true, its nothing to worry about, I'm very happy with these speakers in my bedroom.

This product was defective from the moment I opened the box. The remote did not work at all and it could not be fast forwarded or anything else from the DVD player. The actual DVD player froze the movies I put in, so I sent this product back for a refund and went to K-Mart and purchased a better DVD player.

I have to say I was surprised how well this system works with my LCD TV. It was quite simple to set up and I liked the towers that the speakers mounted to. The sound is excellent, and is a great option for those situations where a 5.1 surround system won't be feasible. My only issue is relatively minor.
There is a low hum that emanates from the speakers when the system is left "on" (after turning off the TV). If you turn the power off on the sub-woofer you have to reset the volume each time you turn the TV back on - so leaving the power on is recommended. I called the factory and spoke to a very knowledgeable and helpful tech rep who had some suggestions and modifications that would alleviate the hum. It's pretty much unnoticeable after a few months of having the system. For the low cost and the overall quality I would highly recommend this system.
Surprisingly Good Package - Great with Samsung DLP Set!.......2006-09-16
I own a Samsung DLP television and like it a lot, and was surprised by how good the built-in sound was. All it really needed (for my use) was an added subwoofer - but there was a catch. When playing from a component input (like a DVD), the Samsung DLP will let you use either the built-in sound OR the auxilary sound outputs (which would drive a subwoofer) - but not both at the same time. Ouch!
That's where this KLH package proved itself to be a perfect solution. It combines twin satellite speakers and a subwoofer, all of which are powered by a self contained (and pretty meaty) amplifier. Plug in to your audio output jacks, and you're good to go (though if you've got a Samsung DLP, you need to use your set's remote to turn the internal mute "on" to activate the sound outputs).
Better still, the KLH package has its own remote control which allows you to set volume, main speakers, or subwoofer independently. Note that you'll be aiming the remote control at the subwoofer, and it needs to be line of sight...if you were hoping to really hide the subwoofer behind a potted plant, it won't work. That's why I knocked one star off my review...but really, I'm VERY happy with this set up (and I found it less expensively at one of the membership warehouse stores).
I used the previous reviewer's tip of changing the speaker wire to 16-gauge, and he's right...it makes a big difference! I haven't tried the iPod dock module, nor the heavy duty speaker stands- to me, they're just gravy added to an already outstanding value.
If you don't actually need to buy a full-on home theater system (amp, DVD player, surround speakers, etc) but want robust "movie sound" that's easy to set up, this is your deal!

I picked up this package for $180. It is an excellent sounding system. I am very impressed. It compliements my Sony 32 inch Wega Trinitron TV. The picture on my TV is great but the sound is lacking. What is great about this system is that it is self-amplified, meaning no need to connect to a reciever.
Please ignore the 400 watt rating
The rating that counts is the RMS rating. RMS watt is the continous loudness. The subwoofer's RMS is 65 watts and the left and right speakers are 35 watt.
Setup:
Basically the setup is Plug and Play. Take the RCA cable and connect between the TV and subwoofer. Connect the speaker wire from the subwoofer to the speakers and basically your set.
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT use the enclosed speaker wire. If you do you'll be sorry. Go out and pick up a small roll of 16 guage wire! Bite the bullet pay the $$.You will not be sorry. Using the enclosed speaker wire KLH provided, the sound become distorted at mid-to-high volume. With the 16 guage wire, the sound was much fuller and no distortion.
The package also include:
1) A docking station for your ipod. You take your ipod and stick it in the provided doc station. Then run the enclosed ipod cable from the doc station to a special ipod input on the back of the woofer. I don't have and ipod so I can review that feature.
2) Includes a a bunch of other cables you might need, a Y splitter cable to, etc
3) Speaker stands and wall mounts. I didn't mount the speakers but I used the stands. The speakers stands are heavy (Which is good) and very well built. They are a snap to setup.
4) A remote control to control the loudness of the speakers and subwoofer.
Performace:
My TV sounds a hell of a lot better. My living room measure 19 by 20 feet. The sound is awesome. The subwoofer fills the room with bass (you can adjust the volume). The left and right speakers have a dome tweeter so dialouge sounds crisp. Movies and TV shows just seem to more engaging.
Aside from movies and TV, you can hook up your laptop, mp3 player, or compact disc player to the headphone jack input on the subwoofer.
Conclusion:
As long as you DON'T use the enclosed speaker wire and use 16 guage wire, you will be happy. This is an excellent 2.1 channel system for those of you who don't need a full blown home theatre but would like better sound that your TV cannot produce.
Overall, this package includes everything you need, for a great price.

It is not good karaoke machine.......2006-01-24
I had no problem hook anything up, but we had a hard time trying to do the Karaoke function. It is very hard to find the vocal cancel key. After I manage to cancel the vocal, we found that part of the base music was cancelled, too. The sound effect was terrible.
I also called the manufacturer for tech support. But, no one can answer your questions. Even though they build this product with Karaoke function, they do not understand why you use that function at all. Ridiculous!
You need a mixing amplifier as a decent system.

I was able to play even mpg videos! The karaoke works great, however you have to first connect it and then insert the cd and start playing so you can hear your voice... also the karaoke feature has to be "on". There is a problem with the graphics if you skip from one track to the other while playing, so be careful to stop the cd, and then enter the track you want, then play. Overall, I think is a good product for a good price, you get a lot of fun and versatility with it, but you have to get to know how to handle it.
Works Great for Karaoke.......2005-01-01
I have had a number of DVD players. Currently, I use a late model Sony for DVD and CD audio. I also have a Karaoke machine for those "Lost in Translation" moments. I have a decent collection of CD-G audio discs, and I keep buying more.
I purchased this player for my parents, so they could enjoy CD-G based Karaoke, DVD movies and audio CDs in their small retirement condo. My father loves to sing.
I had the unit sent to my home and I tested it with over a dozen CD-Gs, audio CDs and a couple dozen movies in numerous formats. The Coby player plays everything. CD-G lyrics appear on the screen and the microphone works. I did not test mp3s only traditional CDs.
I don't need a manual to hook up a DVD player. But, the manual included with this unit, while sparse, does explain how to hook up everything INCLUDING the microphone. My advice to the other reviewer is to try taking the only cable that fits the microphone and attaching it to the mic. Then, take the other end of the cable and attach it to one of the two mic inputs on the front of the player (labelled mic input 1 and 2 as I recall). At this point, insert the CD-G and hit play. The music starts and lyrics appear on the screen. You can adjust the volume and "echo" using the two dial controls under the front panel of the player. The "echo" feature helps people who can't sing (like me) sound less terrifying.
This player is a great value and the key issue for me will be reliability, which no reviewer has yet addressed. If the player breaks I'll just buy my parents a new unit which plays the same formats. The unit costs about as much as a very cheap standalone Karaoke player and if it lasts I'll be very impressed.
On the downside, the player controls are not as elegant as my more expensive Sony and I could see them breaking over time as the seem a bit cheap. And, like all Karaoke players I've owned, to get good vocal projection from the mic you'll need to hook this unit to a video/stereo (AV) receiver. If you only hook this Karaoke system to a TV, expect poor vocal levels.
I gave this unit five stars, not four, to partially offset the one star review and due to the low price of the unit. I would not have purchased this unit if the only review was so negative as I was primarily interested in getting my parents a unit that would play movies, audio AND support CD-G based Karaoke.
No instructions for Karaoke function........2004-12-28
I purchased this product for the Karaoke functionality. The included instructions are very minimal; in fact, they are the briefest instructions for an electronics item that I have ever seen. There is absolutely no mention of how to activate an attached microphone. I have been unable to get any sound from the microphone despite turning the function on using the remote control. I am beginning to suspect that the product is defective.
Additionally, the instructions make no mention that you must first connect the unit using RCA connectors and then adjust a setup menu before connecting using component video cables.
If you are looking for a cheapo DVD player, this one may be acceptable, but don't buy it for the Karaoke function.
I left a message for Colby USA customer service, but they have not returned my call.
Update 1/05
Ultimately, I was able to use the microphone by connecting the unit using old analog RCA cables. The microphone does not function if the unit is connected to a receiver using a more modern optical cable.
Colby USA did not return my two messages to their technical assistance group. I suspect they were flooded with calls from other unhappy customers.
