Plug & Play in Win 2000 SP4.......2007-02-18
After considering many different brands and models of USB 2.0 PCMCIA adapters for my Dell Inspiron 4100, I chose this Belkin model. It seems many people have problems with just about every brand & model of this type of adapter. All I can says is that I plugged the card into my laptop and my Windows 2000 SP4 operating system (OS) detected it and loaded a driver, without any assistance from me. I did find that the card would not recognize my SanDisk 1GB Cruzer Flash drive or 160GB Western Digital Passport drive, until I plugged in the supplied power adapter. ALL USB 2.0 adapters apparently require external power for just about everything, except for some low-power devices like a USB mouse. This is where I believe most people are running into problems, especially for USB 2.0 adapters that are packaged and sold without an external power supply. Also, you must be running Windows Xp with the SP2 update or Windows 2000 with SP4 update. Older OS like Win 98 and ME will require loading the appropriate drivers on the CD provided by Belkin. You must also use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon before attempting to remove the adapter. If you don't know how to do this check your specific operating system Help. Removing the adapter with the laptop turned off will also cause problems when powered back up. Windows will detect this as an "Unsafe Removal" and may not detect the adapter if hot-plugged back in. You may then have to reboot before the adapter will be detected - NOW, you probably get an idea WHY SO MANY PEOPLE WRITE BAD REVIEWS, when it's just user error!

Dell Inspiron 8000 XP SP2...I tried to install with just Plug and Play and ran into trouble. Did not get 2.0 speed, had to update the drivers using the CD. If I were to do it again, I would follow the alternate instruction that load the drivers from the CD first. Took me over 2 hours to get it all straight, so only 4 stars, but could be 5 if I had installed the drivers first.
Once installed, it worked beautifully, even has an AC adapter. Got it for under 30 bucks from newegg

Apparently the CPU in this laptop, an AMD Athlon-XP-M causes the computer to lock up when you try to use this card to up grade this laptop to a USB 2.0.

I needed to add this to my (somewhat clunky) laptop in order to get it communicating with my "vintage" iPod, and other peripherals I hope to get. It took a little bit of coaxing to get it installed on my Windows 2000 platform, as it kept bringing up some odd warning about compatibility not being pre-established in the software, or something like that. But I kept overriding the warning and after just a little work with it, everything is working as it should...which is more than I can say for some other supplemental connectors I've used in the past.
Need to install driver for this PCMCIA card.......2006-02-01
I have been using this unit for about 18 months. It is working fine. Until recently I bought a 1Gb Sandisk Cruzer mini USB drive then I found out that I need to use that 5V DC power supply which came with this USB 2.0 PCMCIA Card. Otherwise, my laptop (Compaq 2195US) just would not recognize this Cruzer mini.
On the other hand, when the first time I installed this USB 2.0 PCMCIA card into my laptop, the XP recognized the card only in USB 1.1 format. In order to gear up to USB 2.0, I had to download the latest driver from Belkin's website and to install the driver with the card connected. This is just for your reference.

Only one port works, and even then is horrible.......2007-08-10
While there are three ports on here, it only works with one device. I tried plugging in my USB mouse and my Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, and it would only let one work at the same time. Not only that, but it comes with no drivers or CD for installation. While I found the driver online, the device is still very buggy. It somestimes takes multiple inserting and reinserting for it to work. So the driver I found was basically pointless, anyway.
I think the catch is that if you have a 12V power adapter plugged into the device, it can then run three devices. However, on the product description (on Amazon, at least), it doesn't say anywhere that you may need that. I am not about to go out and buy one just to find out if it even makes the thing work or not. The manual says that it is optional, anyway. If the device really worked with more power, shouldn't it run through my computer's power supply? I had my doubts about this device, and now I just wasted $30.
I've never had such a big problem with such a simple product. Stay away from this product!

I couldn't get it to work........2005-09-19
I have an IBM laptop running Windows XP. I was unable to get this card to work. I went to Office Depot and bought the Belkin card and it worked immediately. I cannot reccomend the Startech card.
Need power supply for USB 2.0.......2005-09-19
The firewire performed fine, but you need the power supply for the USB 2.0 to work. For this reason I returned it and went with the D-link USB 2.0 card. It doesn't need a power supply and it installed flawlessly on my notebook running XP.

Package arrived without user's manual. Had to download the manual from StarTech web site. Followed the instruction to install the drivers but my Laptop complained the device failed to start. Contacted StarTech tech support and instructed to install the manufacture provided drivers which crashed my laptop. Returned the card 2 weeks later. DO NOT BUY IT, Period.

The IEEE 1394 (firewire) connectivity through this card with my ThinkPad was flawless, but I was unable to get the USB drivers to work. I have had the same problem with an Adaptek dual function card on multiple ThinkPads (T40 and T42), so perhaps the USB problem is peculiar to IBM (now Lenovo) notebooks. It was nice to get a firewire cable included for this price.

The firewire portion of the card works well. However, I have not successfully able to get the USB2.0 to work with my computer. I have called the company for tech support and they are very responsive.

Neither USB adapter has ever worked on this unit. My firewire adapter has worked fine, but unfortunately most of the connections I need the card for are USB. I would recommend going with a more reliable brand. Hope this helps!

I purchased this item (packaged as Syba 2.0 Cardbus) from Fry's Electronics in Wilsonville Oregon. Upon initial insertion, Win XP loaded (generic) drivers. I followed the (terrible) directions, installed the provided drivers and now my computer crashes when I insert the card or wont boot up when the card is inserted and I attempt to start my 2003 Compaq Presario Laptop. Read the reviews of other products and find something better out there.

I expected this generic product would have some problems and maybe not all the ports would work. In fact the card worked flawlessly the first time I plugged it in. I didn't even need to load the driver into the windows xp home operating system. This product is an excellant buy assuming that I did not get the one functional card.

I know the price looks great, but there's a reason for that: This is a confusing, frustrating, and uncooperative piece-of-crap product. There is no "auto install," but instead a disc with over a dozen different folders full of drivers and miscellaneous files for many different pieces of hardware. The one-page guide that comes with it tells you which specific folder to find the "Setup" file in, but after running it, the card can only identify what is plugged into it, not necessarily read the device properly (and that's only when it doesn't crash the system - I occasionally had to restart my computer 2 or 3 times in a row to get it to recognize my DVD RW drive).
After a couple hours of playing around with this card and running several different drivers and programs, desperately searching for compatibility, I just gave up hope and put it back in its box. My printer and digital camera were the only 2 devices I could get to work properly with this card, and even then the speed was no different from my USB 1.1 ports. My DVD RW drive and external hard drive either crashed my system or wouldn't work properly with my burning software, yet both of these drives work perfectly with my old USB 1.1 connection.
I followed the directions *PERFECTLY* and even did some additional research on the side. All I got in return was a headache. I really wish that I had just invested a little more money on a more reliable product the first time around.

the laptop only recognizes it as a usb 2.0. the actual speed is no faster than usb 1.1. I've tried burning dvds, uploading flash drives and ipods. the device did not accomplish the job any faster than my usb 1.1.
maybe i don't have the right driver. in which case, the driver cd they include also sucks. it is nothing more than a compilation of all of the possible drivers that work for this specific hardware. difficult to figure out which driver is the right one.
also, the ac adapter is not included. the power plug included has a usb plug at the end. you'd have to use one of your own usb to power the darned thing.
if i am the one at fault for not using the device friendly, then these people are at fault for not being user friendly.
