5 out of 5 stars One of the best weather radios out there!.......2007-12-23

For the longest time, I never felt the need for a weather radio, but when I moved to MS, I really felt the need for one, with the majority of severe weather and tornadoes occuring during the middle of the night a lot more than other places I have lived. I got this model based on the recommendation of a co-worker who has the same one. I have no complaints whatsoever! My mom had purchased the cheaper model(the $30 model), and it never seemed to work. I personally know it was programmed correctly as I am employed by the NWS and know how to program a weather radio. She returned hers and got a replacement and that one did not work..and I do know that her NWS was sending out the weekly test, warnings, etc. I have also been told by many other people that that model did not work that well either. So, I decided to go with this model, plus I really liked the added feature of being able to disable certain alarms, like the monthly and weekly tests. Those are good things to have alert, but I did not wish to hear them.

I found that this model weather radio was fairly easy to program, and I did not even need to use the manual. That may be different for other people who are not as fluent in weather radio programming or programming technology in general. But the manual is well written to explain it all. I like the ability to turn down the volume of the alert, and that you can view expired alerts. I am usually at work during severe weather, so I do not know whether it goes off or not, but being able to review alerts lets me know that the radio did go off.

I have to agree with those that stressed this is a weather radio first and a radio second. And if I were to recommend a weather radio to anyone, this would be the model I would recommend. I have heard, read, and experienced nothing but good things with this model. It is worth the money since it does save lives.

3 out of 5 stars Great Alert Monitor / So-so AM/FM radio.......2007-12-11

The Weather/All Hazards/Civil Emergency Alert Monitor section of the radio does more than I was looking for! Great feature set. Controls could be a little more intuitive and if they had been I would have rated the unit a 4. I wasn't looking for the AM/FM radio feature and if that's important to you, pass this unit by. The selectivity on both AM and FM is poorer than my six tranistor radio from the '60's!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Weather Radio.......2007-12-07

Good looking product. Little difficult getting it programed. Impressed enough with it to order a second one for our son and family for Christmas

2 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-12-07

Midland WR-300 AM/FM Weather/All Hazards/Civil Emergency Alert Monitor with S.A.M.E.
I bought this with the goal of hearing weather hazards and emergency storm warnings, especailly after one very windy night in which it sounded like my roof was going to blow off the house. I hear the local weather reports but I am unable to hear the SAME reports and unable to recive the advisories and warnings the radio is programed to receive. The radio reception is poor; the antenna Midland sells to improve reception is not designed for a home application; rather, it is designed for mobile/car applications. I am glad I save $50 buying it through Amazon.com rel to direct from Midland, esp due to the poor reception.

5 out of 5 stars One Additional Feature.......2007-12-20

I would like to add one additional feature of this MIDLAND model over the others ( I have both). The MIDLAND WR100C will reset itself soon after the announcement of the watch or warning. This is a great feature if you keep your monitor in a bedroom and you are too lazy to get up and reset it to stop the talk.

4 out of 5 stars Great Weather Radio.......2007-11-11

This is a great product, and serves its purpose well. I love that it doesn't audibly sound at all for the weekly test that the NWS sends out. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wish that there was an option to make the radio just turn on when activated by the NWS instead of sounding the extremely loud alarm first, AND THEN turning on. Other than that, it is a wonderful radio, and it never fails. Great price, you can't go wrong.

2 out of 5 stars Adequate, but some aspects are annoying.......2007-10-06

Pros: This unit does everything I expected. I can hear the automated weather report, and it can be configured to listen to various weather stations. It can be used as an alarm clock. I assume it will turn on in an emergency but this is difficult to experiment with, the "test" only turns on the light, not the audio.

Cons: The design of the unit makes it so that it cannot be placed close to the wall on a table because the power supply and antenna stick out a ways. The antenna cannot be placed at all useful angles because the "elbow" is located a little bit under the plastic housing, which makes it sit even farther from the wall because it cannot be oriented straight up. It seems to take 5-10 button presses to get anything done in the menu system. For example it has an alarm clock and you have to press: menu, up, select, up, select, menu to turn on/off the alarm clock. Setting the alarm time takes quite a few more steps. If they would have added a separate alarm clock button that controlled only the alarm clock functions it could have many fewer steps to get things done. Most other functions take as many or more steps to complete. I consider myself a gadget person. I can pick up most electronic gadgets and get around without a manual. This unit is fairly useable without the manual, but fairly annoying to set up.

The single most annoying thing about this unit is the beeping when you press the buttons. It is pretty loud and cannot be adjusted or turned off. Maybe if it didn't beep so loud I wouldn't notice there were so many button presses to get things done.

Edit: Now I've had this thing for several months. I can't find a good station for it to tune into. It keeps displaying "check reception", and there aren't that many channels to choose from. Maybe it needs to be in a different location in the house.

1 out of 5 stars Read their one year warranty term.......2007-08-24

If the product failed within one year, you need to pay for the shipping fee plus $20.50 for their shipping and handling fee, to have the radio repaired for FREE. That is already $30. Over one year? A FLAT rate of $45 more for fix it! How much this radio cost? I will never buy from such a company.

4 out of 5 stars Great product to have.......2007-08-16

The weather radio works great! The first day we set it up we were alerted of a severe thunderstorm off to the east. Very simple to use. Tones can be set to your liking. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Utter JUNK! Might as well burn your money!.......2007-04-30

This piece of junk finally did it for me! I will never buy another Midland product ever! This "thing" is a waste of money, and a health hazard! First off, it doesn't scan between the stations you program into it, it severely overheats and smells like its melting, and sucks batteries dry in less than a week, and thats with it turned off! If you turn this piece of crap on, it gets so hot after awhile you could use it to start a fire. Really this thing is junk! Do not buy it, just "X" out of any midland product you come to... I haven't gotten another NOAA radio, because quite frankly this thing really turned me off to them... so I'm sorry I can't make a recommendation for a better NOAA radio... but I know this thing sucks!

2 out of 5 stars Midland leaves 74250C customers holding the bag.......2005-07-22

Fully charged rechargable batteries last two days in "alert mode" and new alkaline batteries lasts about six days. Without a radio battery charger, a 74250C is high maintenance with high battery costs. If your families safety is important, the radio should always be in "alert mode" 24/7. Midland lets their 74250C customers down because they should provide a charger with the radio and Midland doesn't offer any for sale. Midland tech advised me to get a 6-volt 100mAh charger. The smallest charger Radio Shack offers is 300mAh which will heat up your unit. Luckily I had an old charger and after changing the plug to a "B", our unit is functioning as it should, not heating up, and should serve our safety needs at home and in our motorhome traveling to different parts of the country as well as unplugging the unit and taking it on day trips in our toad or on hikes. Programing to a specific NOAA is difficult and takes a long process to master the complexities of this radio. Midland seems to have built a good radio otherwise and hoping it will continue working for long service which is in question according to other reviews. Currently it is the best radio on the market to fulfill our desired portable applications and this is because we have a charger for our rechargable batteries in the unit.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2005-06-08

I got this radio less than a year ago, and I'm replacing it because I can't keep the batteries charged. The thing is ALWAYS hot, and after the first 6 months of having it, it won't pick up our NOAA stations and give us alerts anymore. And, the range on it is pitiful. I live on a farm at least 7 miles away from any tornado sirens, so it's VERY important that my family is protected from bad weather. I don't feel safe with this product in my home. I bought it because I thought it would be great to have a portable that can go to the basement with us, but the batteries kept dying. Take my word for it, FIND A BETTER PRODUCT!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product.......2003-11-27

After having problems with the model made by Oregon Scientific I purchased this model from Amazon. I'm in Texas, so a reliable weather radio is a must and this product hasn't disappointed me.

I can, however, understand a couple of the points made by other reviewers, If you were driving across the country it may be a bit difficult to program and reprogram the SAME codes as you move from location to location, but I would think that you could get the hang of it after a few changes.

Overall, I would highly recommend this product.

1 out of 5 stars Two radios - none worked.......2003-06-18

Programming the radio can be a little tricky but if you follow the instructions, it's pretty easy to setup. I picked up one of these due to the crap weather coming through the Atlanta metro area. First one I got refused to work! Called Midland tech support and they told me that everything was configured properly! They guessed it was defective so they sent me a replacment inside a week and the same - no NWS alerts picked up! All duds?? Who knows, but I'm asking for my money back!
It looks good but doesn't work!

    5 out of 5 stars User's Manual.......2005-03-04

This is a great tool, especially here in Florida. Lots of activity and lots of "HURRICANES." Great to find the user's manual on line as mine was lost in the move to Florida. Would not be without a weather radio with these features.

5 out of 5 stars Great little weather radio.......2003-12-09

I bought this Weaher radio after hours and hours of trying to find one that had a price that I could afford and the options (S.A.M.E.) that I wanted. I have to say that this radio has worked flawlessly. I went to the NOAA's website to get my county code, programmed it in and now I get nothing but alerts for the county I live in thanks to the S.A.M.E. technology. The NWS runs a Emergency Alert system test on it every Wednesday at 2:00pm in my area which lets me know that they are alive. It does take some playing around with to figure some things out, but nothing too complicated. This is a great weather radio and I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality manufacture.......2003-05-09

The wall-wart power supply was of poor quality, and on weaker signals there was an audible AC hum. When switching from Wx Radio to FM Broadcast below 93 Mhz I usually got a loud buzzing instead of the radio station. The phase-locked loop (PLL) did not lock. Tuning above 93 Mhz and then down would allow reception but who wants a radio that acts that way. (I mostly listen to NPR at 91.1 Mhz.) The round "selector" dial was rough to operate and felt like a rusty wheel, requiring a little more force than necessary. Side volume control was rough in operation. As far as I can tell there was no way to actually turn it off, so if it were unplugged the batteries would exhaust themselves...

The N.W.S. Weather radio broadcasts and S.A.M.E encoding are great. It's a shame I can't find a good quality receiver.

    4 out of 5 stars Works Well.......2003-01-10

This seems to work as advertised. One feature that has not been mentioned is that you can add up to 3 new SAME alert codes. This may be useful in the future for new codes for warnings, AMBER alerts, etc. On the con side, I tried to wall mount the radio about four feet high. It is difficult for a 6 foot person to read the LCD display at that height. I think the LCD's just are not easily seen unless you look at them almost straight on. But when I put the radio on a desk, it was much easier to read the LCD display.

    4 out of 5 stars Works Well.......2002-11-19

I have had this weather radio for a couple of years. Having specific area message encoding is very helpful and keeps it from going off for disturbances in neighboring counties. It is relatively easy to program, but it helps to have the directions available. One must go to the NOAA web site to get the county codes, so access to the internet is needed to program it.
    Recomended.

Midland 74210 All Hazard Radio with S.A.M.E. Technology , FM Radio and Clock

    Amazon.com Product Description

Get round-the-clock, up-to-the-minute weather and hazardous-conditions information with Midland's 74210 weather/hazard Radio. It comes with NOAA's new digital SAME technology along with a clock and an FM radio with five presets.

With other conventional weather radios, warnings can often be received by persons who are 20 to 30 miles from the warning area. SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) technology allows you to receive only those warnings that are meant for your area.

With its seven channels, this radio will receive all warnings of severe weather or other hazardous conditions. The Midland radio features an "alert" mode that monitors NOAA signals for any alert and automatically sounds a warning or flashes one of its three color alert indicators. Other features include an external antenna jack for better reception, a test button that enables the user to test the alert monitoring system, an AC adapter, and optional battery backup using four AA cells.

The Midland 74210 is compact and was designed to accommodate most spaces. It can be plugged into any standard 120-volt AC outlet (power adapter included), and a built-in jack permits the unit to be powered from any 12-volt DC vehicle or boat (with an optional 12-volt cord). With its 9-volt battery backup system (optional 9-volt battery), it will operate even during a power outage.

4 out of 5 stars Works as advertised.......2003-06-26

This is a nice unit that does what it says it does-- alert the user to warnings and watches for a large number of situations. We've used it during the busy spring weather season and it has never failed to warn us of impending events (severe thunderstorms, flash floods, tornadoes, even a child abduction), always a few minutes before our local television stations. Setup seemed confusing at first but two minutes with the manual made it quite clear and easy. The only glitch was that I had to look up our county code on the Internet-- the 800 number given was never available. With the SAME technology we keyed in on our county alone, and disabled activation for watches that we don't care about-- a really nice feature. It also includes a standard weather radio for forecasts whenever we like, plus an FM radio (which we don't use) and a clock. I'm very satisfied with the unit.

5 out of 5 stars Great Radio-New ones being sold have the flaw fixed!.......2003-06-19

The original ones of these being marketed had a flaw in the system and did not always alert as they were supposed to! However, the newer ones have had that fixed. We bought one and contacted the manufacturer to be sure and they said that the ones available on the shelves now have been updated and work fine!

We deal with lots of severe weather in the Spring and Summer and ours is working just great! Its great to be able to program it to only alert for your county, so you are not awakened for another county getting a warning!

5 out of 5 stars A Nifty Excellent Weather Radio.......2001-12-08

What a great radio, it works just fine. Took a bit of time to understand the instructions, but once it was properly set up, its operating just fine...

    1 out of 5 stars Mine Doesn't Work Either.......2001-10-13

This seemed like a niffty device, but it has never sounded an alert. I thought I may have programmed it wrong (the instructions are written in "chinese english,") but worked very carefully with it last night and am certain I've got it set properly. Any way, tons of weather warnings from the NWS last night and this thing didn't make a single peep. I think the Consumer Prodcut Safety Commission should investigate these things. I wouldn't buy any product from Marine Midland until they fess up to this life threatening defect.

1 out of 5 stars Great technology, but it doesn't work.......2001-06-08

In setting up the Midland 74210 weather radio, I visited the national weather service web site to find the county code for my home. This would allow the weather radio to be activated only for weather watches and warnings in my area. At the national weather service web site, I found a statement that several users had reported trouble with the Midland 74210 weather radio.

I, too, experienced trouble with this product. It is not responding to SAME broadcasts in my area.

I also found the user manual to be confusing and unclear. There are several sections of the user manual that have been modified by having printed changes pasted onto the orignal pages. Apparently, the user guide is a work in progress.
