Excellent clock radio.......2007-11-13
I'm a bit neurotic about these things, and spent a LONG TIME researching clock radios online before settling on this one. It has ALMOST everything I could want.
The best feature is that the times for the two alarms are prominently displayed on the screen, all the time. No more compulsive checking before bed to make sure that the alarm is set for the right time. I also like that you can pre-set each alarm to ring on just weekdays, just weekends, or every day; if you keep to a regular schedule, you really don't need to change anything from day to day.
Regarding the snooze feature: I was a bit worried that the "wave sensor" would be too sensitive, and that I would end up snoozing when I didn't mean to, but so far this really hasn't been a problem. You need to wave your hand pretty deliberately for it to snooze. Also, while you're snoozing, there's a blinking light to remind you that the alarm is not turned off, which is very helpful.
Regarding the tuner: I was surprised to see that this radio has an old analog dial-style radio tuner, rather than a digital tuner. It makes it a bit tricky to find the station you want, but it does tend to stay put much better than other radios. My last one would drift pretty heavily.
There are really just a few things I'm not crazy about:
1. The snooze timer is not adjustable. Each snooze is 9 minutes. Personally, I prefer 7. Many other clock radios on the market today have adjustable snooze, but not this one.
2. No atomic clock. It uses that "SmartSet" business, which is basically just factory-set with a very strong battery. But if it does ever get the wrong time, you'll need to set it by hand. Adding atomic clock capability would make it just about perfect.
3. No digital tuning, but as I said above, it's really not a big deal.
4. The display doesn't prominently show the weekday/weekend option for each alarm. Let's say alarm #1 is set for 7:00, on weekdays only. The display will always show the 7:00 part, but you need to press a button to see which days the alarm is set for (weekdays, weekends, or both). It would be nice to add another indicator -- a light meaning "this alarm WILL go off tomorrow", for example. If you don't change the settings too often though, this isn't much of an issue.
Overall, this radio is highly recommended!
Finally a keeper!!.......2007-09-21
My husband and I went through 4 other alarm clocks before we settled on this one. This alarm clock provided everything that was missing in each of our previous alarm clocks. It has a large easy to read from across the room display (but can be dimmed or shut off and then on again w/a wave of the hand), has two separate alarm settings which you can set for weekdays only, weekends only, and weekdays and weekends also w/buzzer,or radio which each of the two alarms can be set to individual preference. Both alarms are displayed constantly underneith the time (which is suprisingly reasuring feature to have) and my husband likes that the alarm shut off button (radio on/off) is a big round button off to the very left side of the alarm which allows him to turn the alarm off every morning without first putting his glasses on and then hunting for the off button. I love it that once you tap the off button, it turns the alarm off for the day and then automatically resets itself to wake me up again the next day. I also have the option to not shut the alarm off and listen to the radio for an hour as I get ready for work, after which time it will shut itself off until the next day again. All in all a very good buy and well worth the money!!
Don't be Fooled.......2007-09-07
Smartset clocks have a lot of WOW factor. However, don't be fooled. These are not "Atomic" clocks that keep very accurate time. In fact, these clocks are not set by anything external. They are set at the factory and have a long life backup battery that keeps the clock running. When you plugh it in, the display goes through a visual setting process that looks cool. However, these clocks run fast, slow, etc. Nothing actually syncs the time like clocks called "atomic clocks". When these clocks run fast or slow, you have to reset them manually.
If you are looking for accuracy, SmartSet Technology clocks are NOT what you want.
not bad, could be better.......2007-06-17
This clock radio has a lot of nice features, but there are also some quirks and Emerson may have a problem with quality control. Nice features: automatic time setting (but who really believes we will have the same daylight savings time system for another 100 years?), dual alarms each with 7/5/2 day settings, 2-level display that's not too bright. I thought the snooze control activated by passing one's hand in front of the clock would be nice 'til I sat up in bed and the radio shut down - it's too sensitive. Radio does not pull in very well at least the station I like to listen to.
First one I got had some LED elements that did not illuminate. Amazon shipped a replacement FAST - kudos to Amazon - and the replacement had a small defect too, tho not worth pushing Amazon again. (One of the alarms won't show "off," even when it is off.)
Perfect.......2007-05-26
I really like this clock radio. The numbers are large and colorful and the radio is quite acceptable. Not concert hall but good. The clock lights up only when you set off a sensor such as waving your hand near the face. But my cat and bed sheets also do it and it is pretty senstive so the clock display sometimes comes on unrequested. Not a major problem. I like it. I would recommend it; it's fun.

Hearty little clock-radio-CD-player.......2007-10-18
I have to say I was surprised. I'd owned Emerson video and audio products in the past -- all right, in the mid/late-1980s -- and was not too impressed either by how they sounded or how long they lasted. I really do like this product, though. In tune with lalouisianne's review, the sound isn't anything to write home about, but it isn't lousy either. I wasn't looking for anything with a great radio tuner, so the reviewer who criticised the weakness or non-functionality of this one's didn't faze me in the least. The buzzer alarm is a nice contrast to the brightness (or friendly lack of same) of the LED time screen: it's much louder than that of the GE which this Emerson unit replaced. And that in itself is saying something (so says a fellow who grew up within earshot of GE's ordnance factories in western Massachusetts). And don't be wary of buying one from an affiliate merchant, either. WarehouseDeals are very prompt and courteous folks. That's the lot.
Emerson Clock Radio.......2007-10-05
I had a previous Emerson radio and I like this one so much better. It has a nice sound easy to operate and the lighted time is great for at night. I play a lot of CD's and has a rich sound. Also the buttons are much easier to see and operate. Not sorry for my purchase
works.......2007-06-12
There is no indicator on the radio dial so you can tune. The sound itself is not bad for the money. The time is nice, large, and isn't so bright that it keeps one awake.
Avoid this product.......2007-05-17
Do not buy this product! I purchased one for my mother, and she could not turn the tuning dial. We returned it for another, and then that one broke. Since it was purchased 60 days ago, Amazon will not handle a refund or replacement, and we must go to the manufacturer. A very big disappointment all around.
2 out of 2 had to be retuned - junk.......2007-05-14
First one arrived and the cd player was locked. Thought it had been jostled in shippig so returned it while ordering a replacement. Second arrived [very quickly thanks to Amazon] and nothing worked other than the clock. Not the sound, not the tuner, not the cd player...nothing. Amazon has great customer service but this item is pure junk. Save you money and buy something else.

This is a great clock.......2007-12-14
I've had this clock for two years, and bought one for my mother as well.
My power went off in the middle of the night last night, and I fell asleep peacefully after reminding myself that the clock would keep my alarm settings and reset itself when the power was restored. It was, and the Emerson clock woke me up on schedule. I used to have alarm failures constantly, but with dual weekend and weekday alarms, I haven't had to change a thing, and power blips (which we have constantly here) have never caused me to worry. This is a great product-- I only wish the smart set technology was in my coffee maker too.
AMAZING!.......2007-10-28
This clock is so amazing! It's smarter than me! I came in today thinking it was 11:45 because my stupid cell phone told me so, but my fantastically smart alarm clock told me otherwise! The time changed and my clock knew it before I did! AMAZING!
A Shame It Can No Longer Set Itself.......2007-10-28
I bought this clock about two years ago and then they go and change the day the time changes occurs so now my clock changes the time on me a week early so now I have to set the clock manually in addition to remember when the time changes used to occur so I don't get messed up on time...I mean what the heck is the point then? I know they didn't foresee such a change but the changes forces me to buy a new clock if I want to have a working self setting clock? Ridiculous!
Other than that glaring flaw, however, the clock is good. I enjoy the dual alarms so in case I sleep through or in a "sleep induced haze" turn off one I can have a back up make sure I'm awake...hopefully.
Love it!!.......2007-09-24
I love this alarm clock - and seriously, who says that about an alarm clock. I bought it about 2 years ago when we found the need for 2 alarm clocks (one on each side of the bed). Hubby got my old one and I got this one. I love it - OK, so now that the daylight savings time has changed you have to actually set the clock (at least mine has to be set), but I love the fact that you have 3 options for setting the alarm - M-F, S/Su or every day. Works great because I never have to remember to set the alarm. After hubby forgot to set the alarm (again) this morning, I'm buying another one for his side of the bed.
My only gripe is that the volume is very touchy and the quietest setting is still pretty loud, but that might just be me.

This is a piece of junk.......2007-12-26
I bought one of these because of the dual alarm function, the large display, and the ability to dim the display. I didn't realize that the little switches to turn the alarm on and off would be so hard to use. They are tiny and hard to use. After 2-3 months the clock stopped receiving FM signals and the AM tuner is horrible. I wake to static every morning until I can get another clock. I only gave it one star because Amazon forced me to. I will never buy another Emerson product again.
Nice clock, will work well for me.......2007-05-01
I got this clock as a gift, and could care less whether it sets itself or not, I've been setting clocks since I could walk, not a big deal. Most older clocks have battery back ups, so this is not a new feature.
The thing that makes this clock worth the price even without the smart set is the alarm settings. Dual alarm, and can be set for weekdays, weekends, and a couple other settings. So if you are like me, and have different schedules on the weekends you can set one for the weekdays, and one for weekends. bright display, suprisingly good sound, a good everyday clock, worth the price, whether it sets itself or not. Setting itself is a nice feature though. As many others have explained, this is not an atomic clock, nor does it advertise itself to be. Yes, it is a "Self Setting" Clock, pre-set at the factory defaulted to Eastern Standard time in the USA (Mine was 2 minutes behind my actual atomic clock). The set up is easy enough, plug it in, it set's itself, then press the time zone up or down for the time zone you are in, then forget about it for several years. This new version does have the correction for New daylight savings time settings (2007 versions). Again, check this out, even my mother (who is technologically challenged) loves this clock.

If you want a flashlight............2006-03-19
I bought this alarm clock because of it's brightness control- I just got a taller night stand, so my alarm clock is a little too close to my face and bright. I saw that this alarm clock had a switch to adjust the brightness and I thought.."great!!" Well...the first night I had it and set it on the lower brightness setting, and it was like I had a flashlight sitting on my night stand...I could see the SHADOWS of things in the room...my husband just laughed and laughed. I barely slept. If you want your alarm clock to double as a night light, then this is the one for you...if not, you'll likely end up returning it, like I did.
This little clock of mine, I'm gonna let it shine...Good for kids!.......2005-08-04
Firstly, I have to dismiss complaints of the alarm going off at random. Some people just don't know how to set a clock and are mixing up the AM/PM settings and/or not pressing the right buttons for the alarm. I had the clock a few weeks now and I haven't discovered any first hand problems.
As for the brightness issue, yeah, it dimly lights my room on the low setting allowing me to see dark outlines of most everything. The bright setting is almost like a night light! However, when life hands you lemons, make lemon aid.
I've been buying extremely bright LED flashlights as back up in case of power outages. With this clock, I can run it off a lead battery with a dc-ac power inverter, thus giving me a working clock AND enough room light to function without eating up my flashlight batteries. The 9 Volt battery backup gives me piece of mind because the alarm will still sound in case of a power outage during the night, providing the battery is not dead. No dead battery indicator that I can see, so that loses half a star. My old clock used 7 AA's and could loose significant time after several minutes without power, so this is an improvement.
The display is .9" high, just like my old beloved clock, and are easy to see. With my eyes closed, I can't tell it is lighting up the room so I welcome the light for my night time bathroom trips. But that is me. If you have kids afraid of the dark, this clock is great because they have light and learn to sleep WITHOUT a nightlight. If the LED's do dim as time goes on, they will grow out of the need for a regular nightlight.
The dual alarm on my old clock spoiled me and that was a primary purchase reason. It doesn't have a "gentle wake" cycle, but the "beeep beeep beeep" doesn't jolt me out of bed either. Loudly jolting me out of bed in the morning can make me nervous all day, but this hasn't happened. Maybe not the clock for you if tend to sleep through alarms.
The alarm feature is nice because you hit the power button to reset it for the next day. No more forgetting to set the alarm. I'd rather forget to turn it off for the weekend and go back to bed when it wakes me, than forgetting to set it and be late for work during the week. Nice feature that matched my old clock so it wins points.
Wish I remembered the nap timer a few days ago as it would have stopped me from sleeping all afternoon and ruining my sleep pattern. The sleep timer will play the radio for the preset time you choose and turn off by the time you doze off. Just remember, if you choose to wake by radio, the volume will be the same as you left it when you went to bed.
I'm not big on radio but I did turn the volume way up and really didn't get bad distortion. That's a plus. Now that I drive to work, I can listen to traffic and weather on 1010 WINS while I get ready, another plus.
It may never take the place of my old talking clock with day and date, easy set alarms, hourly chimes, and gentle wake theme music, but it is smart looking and I don't mind the "night light". If room light bothers you when you sleep, try another clock.
After 20+ years of having a digital clock with red LED's, having blue took some getting accustomed to. But, blue is a great color and this is one smart looking clock. With any luck this will be my trusty friend for another 20 years.
Completely Unreliable.......2005-06-23
I do agree that this alarm clock has many features, like an AM/FM tuner, a double alarm, and a bright display.
But it is very unreliable with its alarms. It did work fine in the 9 months I owned it; then things started to happen.
Five months - The radio quality seem to drop A LOT! Many stations refused to come in, and it made it almost unusable.
Six months - The bright display was much darker when I first bought it. I had a hard time reading the time due to this.
Nine months (THE FINAL STRAW) - The alarm would not go off at some times. In a month, six alarms did not go off, and I was way behind my day. And to make matters worse, the alarm would go off at random times; in one time it went off at 1:00 AM, and that was awful.
It has a few nice features, but it's not durable. Unrecommended.
I returned mine!.......2005-02-10
I purchased this clock based on the features advertised & the sleek design, thinking it would be perfect. I was so wrong. I don't think the alarms worked properly because I overslept more than once in the short 5 days I owned it. The number display is entirely TOO bright, it lit up the room! The alarm set buttons on the side are quite small & hard to use. The one feature I liked is the radio on/off button, but that alone was not enough for me to keep this radio. A big disappointment!
least reliable clock ever.......2005-02-03
the alarms just do not work on any regular basis, very unreliable and waste of money

Unwanted personal bedside floodlight! AH!.......2006-11-25
The alarm is Ok, and it looks great. The nap button is the best ever, however the buttons either don't work at times or certain alarms at times will just NOT turn off. I have eventually just had to unplug the thing. ALSO, the clock is soooo bright, even when dimmed that I have to turn it facing the wall so I can actually sleep. Maybe get the same version in red, it's not as bright.
