While it does not have the same array of luxury features as TomTom's GO 720 or GO 920 line, the ONE XL-S offers all the features you need in a solid navigation system (see a feature comparison for all of TomTom's GO and ONE devices).

What's New -- Text To Speech
The ONE XL-S has all the features of the ONE XL, but also adds text-to speech, which allows the device to give spoken directions with real street names.

MapShare lets you add your own map corrections and POIs, then share them with the entire TomTom user community via the TomTom HOME website
TomTom Mapshare

What's New -- Map Share
The ONE XL-S includes TomTom's innovative new Map Share technology. Map Share enables users to make easy changes to the map and to share map corrections with other TomTom customers so that users always have the most up-to-date maps available

Map Coverage
Like TomTom's other navigators, the ONE XL-S comes pre-loaded with complete maps for all fifty of the United States, as well as Canada, based on TeleAtlas map data and all stored on 1 GB of internal memory

But it's not just the broad geographical coverage that makes the TomTom ONE XL-S special. The user-friendly design also puts it a step above other navigation systems. The crystal-clear multicolor display makes for exceptionally easy viewing of maps, routes, driving directions, and other traveling information, such as mileage and distance. Measuring 4.3 inches, the TFT display offers an expanded widescreen view of brilliant two- and three-dimensional graphics.

The device also features 32 MB RAM and 266 MHz CPU, making it responsive and zippy. Using the USB port and the provided cable, you can use your PC to add your own points of interest. Memory expansion is made possible by an SD card slot.

The ONE XL-S provides clear and accurate turn-by-turn voice instructions, so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road while your vehicle is on the move. Voice instructions are issued at a speed-sensitive volume, so as your vehicle's engine becomes louder or quieter as your speed changes, the volume adjusts itself accordingly, guaranteeing clear and easy listening. And because voice instructions are available in over 30 languages, just about anyone will find the TomTom ONE XL-S to be an invaluable system.

With its touch-sensitive screen, the TomTom ONE XL-S puts programming and operation literally at your fingertips to make sophisticated technology simple. The built-in database offers thousands of points of interest for you to use as destinations or reference points as you plan your trip. The ONE XL-S will also provide a selection of available routes, giving you the option of avoiding toll roads or choosing between the quickest or the most scenic routes. The database includes zip codes to simplify your route selection, and for extra convenience, the ONE XL-S lets you save the addresses of frequent destinations, making route planning easier and faster than ever. Other display features include a compass mode to assist you with directional orientation, and an anti-glare screen for optimal viewing even in direct sunlight.

widescreen view
The 4.3-inch (diagonal) 3D driving view offers a clear picture of the road and maneuvers ahead (actual size).

For additional navigational features to assist with trip planning, the built-in Bluetooth connection provides access to TomTom PLUS subscription-based services, so that you can tune in to the latest traffic and weather conditions, as well as download additional city maps, voices, points of interest, and much more. The ONE XL-S adds to these capabilities with FM radio-based RDS-TMC traffic information as an available accessory (not included).

Weighing less than 10 ounces and measuring 3.4 x 4.7 x 1.2 inches, the TomTom ONE XL-S can be easily installed in any vehicle. An included windshield suction mount holds it in place. Plus, with an operating temperature range of an icy -10 degrees to a sweltering 55 degrees Celsius (14 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit), the navigator is durable enough for New England winters or Arizona summers. The TomTom ONE XL-S is powered by an internal lithium ion battery that can be charged from your vehicle's cigarette lighter with the included 12-24V adapter.

What's in the Box

4 out of 5 stars TomTom XL-S A Step Up with Text to Speech.......2007-12-26

Looking for a GPS with Text to Speech, the TomTom One XL-S is great. I have a TomTom 520 Go also, and I realy like the Unit telling me the street names instead of just turn ahead. Graphics on the 520 are a little better, as it knows when I turn into a parking lot, the ONE XL-S shows me in a grass field (sometimes it places me back on the street). All in all this is a real great unit for the price. Size is great, you can slip it into a pocket. There is a lot of different aftermarket mounts for the ONE XL.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent GPS with great features .......2007-12-26

I got the TomTom XL-S during Thanksgiving. This is my first GPS device purchase and I am very happy with its features and performance. It contains some neat and useful features. Text-to-speech is accurate and possibly the best feature in this product. I dont look at screen now while driving , I just listen to the directions from Tom Tom, which are correct, clear and announced well ahead of time. The extralarge screen on Tomtom XL-S makes it an additional plus as it is easy to view.

All in all TomTom XL-S is really an excellent choice. You will not be dissapointed. I have used Garmin and Magellans before and both are not as intuitive and user-friendly.

5 out of 5 stars Where the heck am I?.......2007-12-26

I bought the TomTom One XLS, and I could not be happier! I had a bit of a time getting my cell phone to link to it for the weather and such, but that was my fault, I did not research the carriers. The usage is amazingly simple, and I have been very happy with the directions.

4 out of 5 stars Good device for the price.......2007-12-25

Having previously owned a Garmin iQue1600 (GPS/PDA) I have a little experience with how a GPS should work and what they should be able to do. The TomTom One XL-S impressed me as soon as I turned it on with how quickly it locked onto the satelites even in the house.

The wider screen is deffinatley worth the extra you pay for it; as is the text-speech. I love the options for choosing different colours for the maps, and having a separate setting for the night display. The TomTom is a huge advance in when and how often it gives spoken directions compared to my older Garmin. My wife would never use the older one because she couldn't figure out when to turn without taking her eyes off the road to look at the map, which you can not do in heavy traffic. With the way the TomTom repeated directions it was easy to navigate without even looking at the screen. A quick glance at the screen was all that was needed to confirm you were turning in the right place.

    3 drawbacks to the TomTom:
    1) They offer multiple different voices for download from their website. But with the text-speech you can only have the one that came with the system as there is not enough memory to download and added a second.
    2) TomTom advertises the most up-to-date roads; my estate has been here about 4 years and is not on the map
    3) The 2 resturants I tried getting directions too while on vacation, it failed. When the TomTom said I had reached my destination I could see the resturants anywhere in sight.

    4 out of 5 stars ALMOST PERFECT!.......2007-12-25

I bought this for work and overall am very satisfied. Very quick to start up & find position. Screen size and video quality great. If you go off course, recalculates and puts you back on track. Many options.

The only thing I did not like was lack of poi's already loaded. You can customize and input these manually but would have appreciated if this was done already.

For someone who just needs navigation this is perfect.

    Advanced Wireless and GPS Technology
At the heart of the StreetPilot c550 is a high-sensitivity WAAS-capable GPS receiver by SiRF that provides outstanding acquisition times and the ability to maintain a strong signal under heavy foliage and near city skyscrapers. This means you'll always know precisely where you are. Meanwhile, an automotive-grade, sunlight-readable, 2.8 x 2.1-inches (WxH) anti-glare TFT LCD touch-screen display offers easy readability. With dimensions of 4.4 x 3.2 x 2.2-inches (WxHxD), and at about nine ounces in weight, the StreetPilot c550 features a streamlined design that will fit easily on any dashboard with the included vehicle suction mount. The StreetPilot c550 also includes Bluetooth technology integrated with a microphone and dual speakers that lets you make hands-free mobile phone calls on a compatible Bluetooth wireless phone. You can view incoming calls on your c550, and simply tap the screen to answer. Just speak into the built-in microphone while staying focused on your driving. In addition, you can retrieve and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or the phone's call history log. You can also make calls from the more than six million points of interest database -- which includes hotels, restaurants, stores, and much more.

Another feature unique to the c550 is its integrated traffic capabilities. The c550 includes the GTM 20, an integrated FM TMC traffic receiver with a free three-month trial subscription (for U.S. customers only). The GTM 20 notifies you of traffic conditions, construction and weather delays, and automatically suggests alternative routes. The navigator also comes with preloaded maps of Europe or North America and includes automatic routing, 2D or 3D map perspective, and turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names -- making navigation as easy as it gets. An included MP3 player lets you enjoy music from your digital collection while you drive, and an included SD memory card expansion slot means that you can load optional software, such as language and travel guides -- making travel even easier and more entertaining than ever.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Portable GPS .......2007-12-26

Amazon's price for the Garmin StreetPilot c550 is excellent and the GPs system has easy to use features...and it also talks! Unfortunately, the power chord does not fit a VW Passat or Audi A6 cigarette lighter. Garmin says this is rare but acknowledges that there may be a few car models that cannot use the product. The literature does NOT include this caution.

    5 out of 5 stars A great little gadget...........................................2007-12-21

This is a great thing ever. My wife can not go places without this. I hope every people should have this product.

3 out of 5 stars Good for GPS Only.......2007-12-18

If you are buying this and paying extra for the MP3 and Bluetooth options, DON'T. The GPS is fine. Like all GPS systems, it has it's limitations, but overall it works as it should. The MP3 player and the Bluetooth options are, in my opinion, terrible. The sound is very "canny." It looks as if Garmin could have installed some higher quality speakers in this unit. The bluetooth option requires too much interaction with the screen, making it dangerous to operate while moving. Do yourself a favor and get the C340 model if you are looking for a good GPS device and get yourself some other options for Bluetooth and MP3 player. The only advantage the C550 has over the C340 is the anti-glare screen, but you can purchase an anti-glare film to solve this problem, and believe me, the glare on the C340 is a problem. This is another place that Garmin has room for improvement.

4 out of 5 stars Great little unit.......2007-12-17

The very first time I used this unit, I got totally lost. But the problem wasn't with the GPS, the problem was the connection between the chair and the mouse - I programmed in the wrong address. When I got the right address I was right where I wanted to be.

Garmin have done a great job in making a car navigation system that is so easy to use straight out of the box. You can get where you want to go without even reading the manual, the software is so intuitive. And the Bluetooth connection to my phone is just wonderful - I didn't even choose the unit for this feature, but it is so useful I would consider it an essential on any future unit I buy. I have used the FM traffic service, but to date I haven't had to try any detours so I can't really comment on this feature.

I have had a hiking GPS for years now, and so I'm familiar with how they work. It actually amazed me that about the only thing that a hiking GPS and a car navigation system have in common is the connection to the satellites - the way they use and present the data is totally different. As a result of using the hiking GPS there is some functionality that I wish the car system had (Garmin software engineers, I hope you are reading this):

    1. I wish the c550 would display current heading (in cardinal points or as an arrow on the compass (track-up or north-up), user selectable) on the map screen. You can get heading info on the "Trip Information" screen, but it means toggling back and forth. This is important information to know when you are navigating unfamiliar areas.
    2. I wish the c550 displayed altitude. It could display this on the "Trip Information" screen. While not necessary for car navigation, it is interesting info that I've grown to love on my hiking GPS. Sometimes I even drive with both GPS's in operation, just to get altitude, which I guess makes me a certifiable gadget freak.
    3. The next one might be a little harder to implement. I rent cars a lot, and have to fill up with gas near the airport. I would like to be able to aim the car at the airport, specify a detour along the way to a gas station (you can do this at the moment), but then I'd like to specify that the gas station must be the closest reasonable stop along my route to the airport. At the moment I take aim at the airport, then change my destination to a gas station when I get near the airport. Most times this works, but on occasions I've had a sizeable detour to get to the gas station.
    4. A QWERTY "keyboard" would be more useful than the current ABCDEF one.
    5. LAT-LON data would be nice too, maybe tacked onto the "Trip Information" page.

Keep up the good work, Garmin. I'd have given you four-and-a-half stars if I could figure out how to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Easier to use than falling off a log.......2007-12-14

It's just the greatest. Speaking street names makes driving through complex intersections so much easier. Excellent value.

The Edge 305CAD with the speed/cadence sensor is the ultimate GPS-enabled fitness partner for cyclists. View larger.
The Edge 305CAD goes a step beyond its little brother--the Edge 205--with a built-in barometric altimeter and speed/cadence monitor. The altimeter delivers extremely accurate elevation readings, and a self-calibrating wireless sensor delivers speed and cadence data to the Edge 305CAD. The sensor mounts to your bike's rear chain stay. A wheel magnet mounts to the rear wheel to deliver speed data, while a cadence magnet attaches to the crank arm to deliver pace data. In addition, the Edge 305CAD is compatible with the Garmin Heart Rate Monitor. This optional monitor delivers heart rate data via a chest strap equipped with a robust wireless transmission.

The Edge 305CAD is easy to use. Simply take it out of the box, snap it into the included bike mount, and hit the road. The high-sensitivity GPS receiver knows your position in tree cover and canyons, making the Edge 305CAD an extremely reliable navigation device. And with the customizable cycle computer, you can select from up to eight different data fields for continuous feedback. Garmin goes well beyond typical cycle computers by integrating GPS technology for basic navigation. In addition, the Edge 305CAD gives you the ability to overlay your ride data onto a course map and even "race" a virtual partner that makes training fun and helps push you toward your goals.

The included PC-based Training Center software gives you the tools to create workouts, manage and download courses, and create a detailed post-ride analysis that charts your performance and measures your speed, distance, climb, descent, and heart rate data against varying terrain, elevation, and other conditions. And with the Edge 305CAD's built-in USB interface, it's quick and easy to upload and download the information you need.

The virtual partner screen depicts a digital cyclist (representing your desired speed) in relation to your real-time speed. From this set of data the icons will show how far ahead or behind you are from your digital competitor. The Courses feature allows you race against a recorded course to try and match previously set speeds at every point along the way.

Training in urban areas can be tricky, and undesirable traffic can skew training data. To help remedy this problem, Garmin has included an auto-pause function that pauses the training timer when you slow down below a specified speed and resumes when you speed up again so you can focus on your ride, not on your data collection. And with the auto lap function, this smart little device automatically triggers a lap every time you pass a specified location or travel a preset distance.

With its sleek, waterproof design (the Edge 305CAD meets IEC 60529 IPX7 standards, which means that its components can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes), the Edge 305CAD is the perfect companion on any bike, and it attaches to either the stem or handlebars. This lightweight device (88 grams) is powered by an 800mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery and delivers an average of 12 hours of use per charge. The rugged case frames an easy-to-read, large, backlit display that makes it a breeze to view the data fields. So whether you're racing against your virtual partner, fighting to shave precious seconds off your old record, or training for the next big race, the Edge 305CAD will help to monitor your progress and make you a better cyclist.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect bike computer for gadget freaks!.......2007-10-23

I returned to cycling after a 20-year hiatus last year. Being a dyed-in-the-wool sucker for gadgets, I had to get the Garmin 305 as my bike computer. Cyclist friends of mine made fun of its size, made fun of my desire to map my rides afterward, and generally mocked the device. I ignored them, and I'm glad I did.

The 305 has been a great training partner. Thanks to its data recording ability, I can really easily correlate perceived effort on a day's ride with my actual performance in terms of speed, heart rate, and cadence.

Setting up all of the sensors on the bike was relatively straighforward (though the combined wheelspeed and cadence sensor setup was somewhat novel), and the directions were clear. You charge the 305 through its USB port. It comes with a separate power supply so that you can either charge it from a wall outlet, or from the USB cable connected to your computer.

On the bike, the display is large and clear. I've found it readable in any of the lighting conditions in which I'd be willing to ride the bike. The interface is relatively easy to navigate, though a bit puzzling to set up. Garmin's origins in navigation show in a couple of funny places. One of them is the default data fields displayed on the device: your heading is shown by default in the five data field configuration that I prefer, but your heart rate isn't. I was able to reconfigure it to display the fields that I watned to see, but I found the choice surprising in a product that is ostensibly aimed at athletes.

In use, I found that the GPS reception was generally good even in tree-shaded areas, but the startup process can sometimes be irritatingly slow. Data reception for the heart rate and cadence sensors has been glitch free.

In terms of durability, I've banged the 305 around quite a bit and ridden it in conditions that left other electronics begging for mercy (don't ride in the driving rain without putting your mobile phone in a plastic bag). The 305 still performs like a champ thousands of miles later.

As a Mac user, I found the Mac support lame at first, but it has been steadily improving with Garmin's release of their Training Center software for the Mac, a Mac version of their Web Updater tool, and improvements they've made to Mac support [...]. It's still not perfect, but it's very useful.

The ultimate endorsement of the 305 is that I'll be replacing it soon. Garmin has announced their upcoming new generation of Edge cycling units, and the 705 looks too good to pass up. I'm hooked on the capabilities and insight that the 305 has given me, and I'm looking forward to even more with Garmin's next generation.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Edge 305.......2007-08-10

I recently purchased the Garmin Edge 305, w/cadence, plus I added the heart monitor a couple weeks later. I commute daily on my bike and I do 350 - 450 miles per week, with weekend centuries. This is a great tool for anyone who wants to have a better understanding of their effort and cadence. I have found very quickly that by focusing on my cadence and heart rate, I have improved my overall times and have become even more efficient on my bike. The ability to, customize the display, set up interval trainings, upload rides to the computer, analyze the ride as a whole or part and compare to other days is outstanding. I would recommend the Garmin to anyone who wants to become serious about cycling, get the most out of their time on the bike, and improve their performance. A little expensive but worth every cent. It has even helped me find my way home when I have gotten out in an area I am not as familiar with. Must have for anyone who really wants to track results, understand effort, maintain data and improve performance. One negative is the battery life is truly only about 6 -6.5 hours, so for the longer rides I have left my Cateye on my bike so I have some reference for speed, mileage etc... another is the unit will go to "sleep" if left for more than a couple of days, but by holding both the Mode and Reset button for 30 seconds it will "wake" the unit back up. Still awesome!!! Ride Strong!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice bike computer with cheap plastic mounting hardware.......2007-05-22

    Overall:
This is a clever and easy to use little device, but it comes with very poor mounting hardware. This is my first GPS.

    Pros:
The GPS has helped me find me way when I've gotten off course. Since it doesn't have street maps, it works by tracking your course then guiding you back to the course. There's also a homing feature to guide you back to a home location.

The altimeter is very accurate, relying on GPS and barometric pressure to measure elevation gain/loss.

It's nice to be able to download the data onto a desktop computer for viewing and archiving.

Lots of third parties offer software to help you view the data online and/or share it with friends (i.e., motionbased and trimble-outdoors).

The unit is highly customizable, and the screens can be set up with any number of bits of information (up to 8 pieces of information a time per screen). There are several "views" including ones that shows just a course map. The software is relatively easy to use.

It's fun to find or make a route worth exploring using a route toaster, then going to the new place with the help of the Garmin 305's course map as a turn-by-turn guide.

    Cons:
My only real complaint is the mounting hardware. For a $300 bike computer - the mounting hardware is the worst. The unit comes with two mounts (one for the handlebar, another for mounting on the stem). Both of my mounts started to crack after two weeks, and were broken within 60 days. I emailed Garmin and they emailed me back saying the mounts are not in stock, check amazon for prices. I've been carrying the unit in my pocket and looking at data after my ride.

2 out of 5 stars computer brain blew it.......2007-01-17

Computer Brain sent the wrong product right before Xmas so the present that I intended had to be shipped back and it is Jan. 16 and I am still awaiting the right one. So I don't even know what the product is actually like yet.

    3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2006-11-03

    Short battery life.
    Hard to read display.
    Display not well organized.
    Good, but room for improvement.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!!!!!!!!.......2007-11-26

I purchased this unit from REI. They always stand behind their products. Thanks goodness! If you read a couple of the other reviews you'll see... SD Card door broke off, battery hard to remove, downloading cache info is difficult and transfers with limited info. Been there, done that! Battery door removal is a joke. Taking mine back today and buying Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. $50 more but not designed like a toy. Buy Garmin if you're looking for a hand held. Oh, and if you need help with your Garmin, you'll be speaking with someone who speaks English.

5 out of 5 stars works good but could use.......2007-11-04

The gps works good but comes with very little instructions. However most can be downoaded as a PDF from the Magellan website(of course they don't tell you that anywhere in the package)
I suggest not using the backlight, it will run out the batteries in 3 hrs and without it you get a little more time from AA's, go for the lithium. I purchased all the chargers for the gps, however all must be plugged into the usb cable with is a bit cumbersome to attach.
Would still recommend this for the hunter and outdoors man.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't buy.......2007-10-25

Purchased Explorist 500 in September 06. Unit lasted 6months, then started shutting off during computer uploads. Customer support recommended that I update the software (bad idea). During the software install the unit shut off and would not start again. Habib then directed me to send the unit in for repair. They sent me a refurb unit that had numerous software glitches. Unit has once again died. Because it is refurbed I am being charged for repair. Go Garmin!! If you still end up buying this P.O.S you will need to learn to speak punjab or whatever language the speak in India. After trying to communicate with the customer service rep for at least 45 minutes I had to self medicate with several stiff gin gimlets.

5 out of 5 stars I love this TomTom Go 910!!.......2007-11-03

I bought a Refurbished Tomtom 910. Initially I had problems with the Tomtom Home application on my computer but a quick call to their Support line and I was up and running very easily. I uploaded an update this morning which now allows me to see my exact location (corner of Green and Main) which would be helpful in case of an accident in a strange location as well as the nearest "Help" locations i.e., hospital, pharmacy, mechanic etc... I have loaded about 550 songs onto this and listen to them though the car stereo which is great!! I only have one wish and that I wish you could disable all voice commands when you're listening to MP3s so they would quit interupting the music. Than if I was in a strange location I could enable the voice again. All in all, I'd buy this all over again!! If my wife's vehicle didn't have built in navi I'd get one for her.

1 out of 5 stars Failed our test..........2007-07-16

We purchased a TT Go 910 after our Garmin NUVI 360 was stolen. We used the Garmin unit in DC and MS (Gulf Coast) pretty extensively before it went missing. When time to replace, I was hopeful that all the TomTom features would add benefit. I was very disappointed with the product we received. And, I don't think it's failing were related to the fact that we bought a refurbished unit. Here are my gripes:

    1. It couldn't tell the difference between night and day. Even though it was set to change to night mode automatically, it wouldn't. Garmin service said there was a problem, confirmed that I had the most recent firmware and offered no solution.
    2. The suction mount "weeps". In other words, the unit doesn't stay where you want it.
    3. There is no independent volume control. If I had the MP3 volume set to a comfortable listening level (whether using the built-in speaker, line out or the optional FM transmitter base), the directions were inaudible and the phone was hit or miss.

Now, if all of the above could be explained by it being a refurbished unit, the biggest deal, #4, cannot be so explained.

    4. The unit simply couldn't get us where we needed to go. On our first trip to MS using the Garmin, WE led our Realtor to each property we wanted to see. On the second trip, using the TT 910, we were constantly lost. We were sent a replacement unit but found no improvement and sent all back for a refund. In the end, we spent a little more for what I consider to be a much better unit - the Garmin NUVI 660.

The NUVI got us where we wanted to go very effectively. It offers independent controls for the MP3 and Directions/Phone so you can "balance" everything pretty well, especially if you use the line-out jack. The TomTom does have a nice big hard drive for MP3 files while you're limited to 4 or 8 GB SD memory cards on the Garmin.

First, you can choose an optional GTM 10 or GTM 11 FM antenna that allows you to get traffic alerts broadcasted by Clear Channel in select U.S. cities. This service will display congested areas on a color-coded map, allowing you to avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that calculates a new route.

If you want to step up to the next level of driving data, choose the optional GXM 30 antenna, which provides compatibility with XM satellite radio services. XM NavTraffic is the first nationwide satellite-based data traffic information service to enable an onscreen overlay of current traffic conditions. The 7500 uses this data to automatically calculate and suggest faster alternative routes long before traffic starts backing up. Accidents, road construction, or other incidents affecting traffic are graphically represented as icons on the navigation map. Precise information relating to a traffic incident is also available, including the exact location of the incident, the lanes affected, and the predicted duration. What's more, roadways are color-coded to indicate directional traffic flow speed.

The 7500 can also keep you up to date on weather conditions, thanks to XM weather data. Current weather conditions for over 2,000 locations and weather forecasts for 162 cities are displayed on the screen. United States county storm and flood warnings are also highlighted, giving you the best and latest information available for your travels.

The 7500 can also serve as a powerful entertainment device, as it offers more than 150 channels of XM satellite radio channels, featuring 100-percent commercial-free music, as well as more than 30 channels of news, sports, and talk. You can send XM and navigation audio to your car stereo through the StreetPilot's integrated FM wireless transmitter or via an integrated 3.5 mm stereo headphone/line-out plug. And if that's not enough, the 7500 also comes equipped with an MP3 player that lets you take your personal music collection on the road. Loading music from your computer is drag-and-drop easy, and there's no need for special software. The 7500 also works as an audiobook player; you can download books from audible.com and enjoy your favorite authors on the road. Plus, thanks to the 7500's AV in connector, you can connect and play a portable device, such as a DVD player, on the unit's massive screen. For safety's sake, entertainment audio is muted when navigation instructions are given.

    Top-Tier GPS Performance
The 7500 is a high-end GPS navigation device with text-to-speech functionality that allows the unit to audibly announce the names of upcoming streets and points of interest. This lets you keep your eyes on the road while you navigate through busy traffic and tricky roadways. The 7500's 480 x 234 widescreen, automotive-grade touchscreen display automatically dims and brightens based on ambient light conditions. Meanwhile, an included wireless remote control can be used to operate the device's functions.

Finding your way with the 7500 starts with inputting a location on the touchscreen. Next, the unit's text-to-speech feature speaks to you just like a back-seat driver, telling you the names of streets and when to turn and in what direction. And if you happen to miss a turn, don't worry--the 7500 automatically calculates a new route to your destination. In addition to point-to-point navigation, the 7500 can calculate the most efficient route between multiple destinations--a real time saver for realtors, salespeople, and errand runners. You can also tell the unit to avoid specific areas or road segments when calculating a route. With the 7500, you have the option of choosing from a three-dimensional mapping perspective or from one of several 2-D overhead viewing options. What's more, audible and visual navigation instructions and warnings help you navigate more quickly and keep your eyes on the road.

An integrated dash-mounting system provides easy adjustment and quick release, while an integrated speaker enables the 2730 to deliver voice prompts (or, as mentioned, you can use the built-in FM transmitter to route commands to your vehicle stereo system.) An internal antenna that communicates with up to 12 GPS satellites is provided, as is a USB port for PC connectivity. There's also an MCX-type connector for hooking up an optional external GPS antenna, as well as a SecureDigital (SD) memory card slot and a headphone jack.

Another time- and frustration-saving feature of the 7500 is the database of preloaded maps and points of interest. Gone are the days of uploading partial maps from your computer to your GPS device: the 7500 has them all built in. The unit comes preloaded with Garmin's highly detailed MapSource City Navigator NT North America maps of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Finding points of interest along your route is made easy with the 7500's huge built-in database of nearly six million hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin has also made it easy for users to upload custom points of interest--now you can add school zones or safety cameras to your database. You can even turn on a proximity alert to notify you of upcoming custom points of interest.

    Dead Reckoning
As a step-up feature from the 7200, the 7500 includes dead reckoning sensors to track your vehicle's course when the GPS signal is blocked, which can occur when driving in urban areas or tunnels. If you lose GPS coverage in areas with tall buildings or tunnels, the StreetPilot 7500 keeps on navigating. This feature requires professional installation.

Note: Subscriptions are required for XM NavTraffic and XM Radio services. A subscription may be required for use of the GTM 10 or GTM 11 traffic services, which are not available in all areas.

    What's in the Box
StreetPilot 7500, MapSource City Navigator NT North America maps, integrated FM wireless transmitter, alphanumeric remote control, 12-volt adapter cable, USB interface cable, A/C power adapter, quick-release dash mount, quick reference guide, and owner's manual.

4 out of 5 stars Complies with its duties reasonably well.......2007-10-21

I decided to buy the Garmin StreetPilot 7500 GPS Vehicle Navigation after I was cheated by the salesperson who swore me that the Audi Q7 I was buying him could have a dealer installed Audi original GPS. That was a lie and I bought the 7500 because I wanted a big screen device, similar in size to the original Audi one. And this is correct: the size is HUGE (7 inches screen and almost 4 pounds)! But the manufacturer and Amazon do not hide these facts to you. This device is good for a big SUV or truck where you have plenty of space on your dashboard, but it will obstruct your driving view in a regular car. The software -as it is in all the Garmin devices- does not show a beautiful image but it complies with its duties reasonably well. The interface is user friendly and very easy to use. The voice directed instructions helps you in fixing your attention on the road most of the time. If you are a MP3 fan this option will like you, but the device does not have Bluetooth connection, which will not allow you to hear your cell phone through the device speakers.
Overall, I am satisfied with my Garmin StreetPilot 7500 GPS.

    4 out of 5 stars 7500 gps.......2007-09-03

This unit is as represented but I think the graphis could use some help. It doesn't clearly define exit ramps from major roads. As in the name of them prior to exit.I was a little disappointed that the graphics were not on par with Garmin aviation GPS units.

1 out of 5 stars Owned it for a year and haven't been able to use it.......2007-06-17

Garmin makes registering and using their gear unnecessarily complex, with the arcane requirements, difficult to navigate validation, registration, and implementation interfaces, with all the registration codes, keys, and poor to non-existent customer support. When I went to register my Streetpilot 7500, I listed the product line ("On the Road"), check, StreetPilot, check, 7500, check, serial number, check, date of purchase, check, Merchant, check, and, then... their web site asks for a "Registration Code," which, they say, is on a little yellow slip of paper "found in the box." Needless to say, I could not find the little slip of paper with the registration code, which has made getting support difficult. Added to this, the Garmin web site does not have an e-mail product support capability that I could find, but only telephone 800 numbers which only operate on business days during business hours, and always seem to be busy then. Also, if you order this GPS unit, there is no indication that you will not be able to load much in the way of mapping software (once you can figure out how to do that; the map unlocking and loading interface is terrible, and seems to be aimed at allowing the consumer to get as little value for their money as possible) without an SD (Secure Digital) data card, which does not come with this extremely expensive unit. Then, there is nothing on the Garmin web site indicating whether the Garmin unit will accomodate High capacity Secure Digital cards, like 8 GB, so that one can keep all one's maps loaded in the unit, and not have to be keeping track of, and switching out, the small and fragile SD cards, each loaded with only a portion of the mapping software one uses. High priced, arcane, baffling, and redundant security requirements, and poor customer support make a bad combination for Garmin. Garmin needs to re-orient their entire approach to the business to be more user friendly and toward providing more customer support. Meanwhile, I have a $1,300+ paperweight on my desk at home. It is no wonder that all of my friends use GPS units made by Tom-Tom.

5 out of 5 stars Good GPS .......2007-01-15

I really like my Garmin StreetPilot 7500 GPS. I think the 7200 would have been adequate for my needs, but the 7500 is great. I like the quick touch screen features. The only situation I am dealing with is its size and safe mounting. Otherwise, a very good purchase.

    4 out of 5 stars Garmin StreetPilot.......2006-08-23

I ordered the navigator to assist me with my out-of-town, large city driving directions. When I received the system it appeared to be the greatest device, but provided more information than I really needed.

I was going to put it in the car to give it a try but the charger was not included. I did attach it to the computer and I'm sure would have been pleased with this system.

Ordering online is new to me and my experience wasn't the best with the missing item, however, this was truly a human error and I will probably order online in the future.

I did go to a local store (Circuit City) and purchase the Garmin StreetPilot that was a little smaller and had bluetooth capability. I am extremely pleased with the navigator and it was a wonderful companion during a recent trip to Cincinnati & Cleveland. I felt secure knowing I was always going in the right direction.

Thank you for your follow-up and interest.

    Sincerely,
    Sue Totten
