i bought this player to use in my martial arts workouts. i could care less about musical fidelity, since the only CDs i use with it consist of someone shouting out combinations.
nevertheless, i was hoping for durability and a reasonable life-span. but after a few months of using it for about an hour a day, it could no longer track *any* of my disks (and none of my other players had any trouble with these.) i tried cleaning the lens, but that had no effect.
save your money. buy a sony. this one's a loser.

The cd player made a very loud whirring noise when it was playing the cd. If the volumn was up loud enough you could not hear it, but at low volumn levels it was a very loud noise.
We called the company who said it was not suppose to do that, so we returned to Amazon for refund as it was out of stock and they could not ship another.

Howeeve, with the shipping & handling, it was equal to the same item I could find at a retail outlet. However, I could not find such an item when I did shop.

The unit was a little bigger than I envisioned, but only because my imagination is not very accurate. It can't be too much smaller and accomodate the width of a CD and some speakers.
I think the design is clever, considered, and admirable. Even when the handle is lowered it does not interfere with the tape deck, for example.
There's nothing to complain about in this unit, given its size and price, but it doesn't quite thrill you, either. I'd have gladly traded the remote for an aux jack that would let me pipe my MP3 player.
But I needed tape and CD, portable, at a decent price, and that's what you get here.

It's OK for the money -- I don't think you will do better for the price. The sound is not nearly as good as, say, the Bose Wave Radio, but that costs $500. The Mega Base feature gives the audio an artificial, honking, shrill sound that I find annoying so I do not use it. I find voice quality on the unit to be quite good and better than other, similar units I have had. Music quality is a bit of a let-down. The remote control has several extraneous TV/video functions on it; I don't know why. (Push, push, push . . . No pictures! :) ) Don't lose the remote -- some functions are not on the main unit and are only available through the remote.

This item was purchased as a gift for a friend / co-worker who was retiring. Had a lot of old, one-of-a-kind albums, and we thought this would be the perfect gift for him. I was concerned because of poor reviews, but found out that the ones manufactured now (since April 2007) are considered 'second generation' -- more reliable and trouble-free than the earlier ones. The recipient of this one is extremely pleased to be able to put his older, over-played albums in CD format. Easy to use, other than having to insert breaks between songs. I've listened to a couple of the CDs he's made, and was surprised at the decent sound quality, especially considering the music source. After talking with him and listening to these CD copies, my fears about this product have been releived. I am now considering buying another one ... for myself.

This is a great product. I do not understand all of the negative reviews being left here. I got this first and foremost because I wanted a record player. I thought the added feature of transferring an occasional record or tape to compact disc was a great extra feature. Now for all of you audiophile's out there...the transfer quality isn't perfect. The hiss and pop sounds that come along with vinyl are still there. I never expected a miracle and didn't think the vinyl to CD transfer would sound like a CD I just bought at the store. Also, tape to CD quality is what I expected - once again not like a store bought CD. The quality, however, is very good with both of these transfers and I was actually surprised at the brightness of the sound. The sound is like one should expect a vinyl or tape transfer to CD. If you want to master the sound, rip the CD to your computer and use another program to do so. Also, the split track feature is excellent. You just have to be conscious of when the song ends so you hit the button at the correct time. Now, another person mentioned that the technology should allow for an automatic split track feature so one wouldn't have to monitor the machine all the time; this would be great in a perfect world and I trust that sometime in the future this technology will be available to the average Joe. For a couple hundred dollars I think owners of the Songwriter turntable should be pleased. It does the job well.

Great Sixty Dollar Sound System.......2007-08-04
I was looking for a radio-CD-cassette player for the bedroom, to supplement the standard radio now in use. I was not looking for something expensive but just to play some of my tapes and CDs before bedtime. I hesitated about buying this system after the one reviewer said the volume was weak.
I received the unit today and set it up. It is just wonderful. The volume goes as loud as I would want. But then I'm nearly age 60 so maybe I don't need the volume the kids today would want.
The sound from this unit is great, I rated it five stars because for the price it is unmatched. The AM reception is quite weak but the FM is strong. Tape cassettes and CDs play quite nicely.
If this were a movie review, it would be Thumbs Up!

I bought this cd/tape player 45 days ago from Amazon and it seems like the product is not working properly. I have lost 2 audio tapes already as it got stucked inside while playing. I called the Coby company for an exchange or fix. They advised me to send them Money order of $12.00 for shipping charge. It does not make any sense as I have alredy spent $29.00 to buy this item. Their customer sevice is not good and it seems like they don't care. I would suggest anyone to aovid Cobby products.

I purchased a CD player to play CDs. Out of the box it wouldn't work. Then I was told it couldn't be returned. It took three weeks before a shipping label arrived and that might make it too late to get credit as it had to be returned in 30 days. I sent it back as soon as I was in receipt of the label. I protested through my credit card company. I am not pleased and will probably never use Amazon again. Not a good start to this relationship

Like others who've written reviews, the CD player is giving a 'no disc' message. I just wish I'd seen the reviews before we wasted our money on it... This is the 2nd Sony in a row to quit on us. Fool me once, shame on you; Fool me twice, shame on me. This is the last time I'll ever buy a Sony anything!
Good sound, FM mono feature.......2007-05-04
This is one of the few boom boxes that has the ability to set the FM tuner to mono. I consider this essential, because if a station is not quite coming in, switching to mono makes it clear. I don't know why that is, but I have noticed it over the years. Some radios claim to automatically switch to mono when they sense a weak station, but that doesn't seem to work very well.
Otherwise, it sounds good and works well. The remote is well made. The design incorporates some of that ridiculous styling that reminds me of fins on old cars--extra unnecessary plastic, but I've seen worse. Only had it about 6 months so can't comment on reliability. I have been leery of Sony on that score from some past experiences, but so far so good.
cd player stopped reading discs.......2007-03-09
I purchased in Sept 05 and have enjoyed it for 1.5 years -- but suddenly it stopped reading cds. I put the cd into it and close the lid and the screen reads "no disc." I called sony and they offered to exchange it for the special price of $77.60 -- which is the same price I paid/or I could re-buy it for today. Big bummer. I was expecting a much longer life...

After working just fine for 13 months, the box stopped playing cds. Sony's site was no help, nor was the rep. They would be happy to replace it with a refurbished box for $7 less than a new one, or repair it for $10 more than I paid ($80) but no reason given why a box this new would die.

I bought this boom box for an elevator rave I was throwing. It's quite loud, and the built in subwoofer performs well even with Electro House music. The auxiliary port makes it easy to play music from an iPod or Computer. The construction and carrying handle are solid, but the plastic Sony XPLOD Styling is tawdry. Nevertheless this is a good quality product, and definitely worth the money for anyone who wants a big sound on batteries.
Great sounding, funny looking boombox.......2007-10-18
I chose this boombox because I wanted something portable that could play CDs and my old tapes as well. It doesn't match my log home decor (looks like it belongs in a 13 year old boy's room) but sounds crisp and clean, and the bass boost really does make a difference. Our radio reception is poor here because of mountains, however this unit pulls in stations better than anything else I've had---a pleasant bonus. The remote is simple to use, works good, but the display window could be bolder and brighter. I've only had it a month, so don't know how it holds up.
SONY CFDG505 Boombox.......2007-09-20
The main purpose of the boombox is to receive a great sound. And you get it with this SONY CFDG505. The sound is deep and rich in all modes. When I saw this for the first time I liked the appearance and then listened to the sound. Several reviews indicate that appearance is back to old years, but I would not say so. The only problem is the poor LCD display. The screen is very small and can not be seen from couple of feet. Also it does not show the correct sound's level (maybe it's on my item only). Anyway on overall this is very good boombox for the money it costs.

I'm 47 and I have owned alot of sound equipment in my day. This is a good sounding boombox with A CASSETTE PLAYER! When you are my age, at some point in life you must have owned vinyl records, 8-tracks, and compact cassettes. So if you're like me, you don't want to be bothered throwing away all of your tapes and replacing them with CD's. But what to play them on? Good luck finding something that sounds great and that you don't have to search used vintage stereo equipment stores or pawn shops to buy. Now this thing looks stupid, and I feel really old when I look at it (because this product was obviously meant for the younger crowd), but I can get past that because of how good it sounds. Not to mention that I don't have to replace all of my cassettes now. I cannot vouch for it's quality as I know things are made much more cheaply these days, but I plan on being very careful with it so I can KEEP MY TAPES and have a great sounding box on which to play them.

Plenty of power with deep bass. This thing sounds really good -- especially for the price. It is a little on the heavy side at 21 pounds, without batteries. The center has a 5 1/8" subwoofer that's surrounded by a red neon light. Looks very cool and the subwoofer has 2 levels if you don't like your music too bassy. You can plug in just about any sound source you want played through the speakers.

this is the boombox that will blow away the competition. i bought it at a sony outlet for more than amazon has it for. compared to the sony cfdg500 and the other xplod the cfdg505(ugly boombox in my opinion and was the twin to the cfdg500 but was no really an xplod boombox) the cfdg700cp has 20 watts of power and can rattle the windows in my room. this boombox can beat some of the shelf systems out there that i have already listened to and even owned one. this boombox is a beast but really thumps out the added bass that you can add with a cd player that you can very easily add with the built in wire. last years xplod(cfd505) could not really handle added bass. it would say help me. this time sony put a bigger and shiny subwoofer that you can see with the red lights around the subwoofer. also you now have mp3 playback capability.(the only thing missing is the backlight display again. i guess sony leaves it out cuz of lights going around the subwoofer other than that, this is a perfect boombox) oh also if you are listening to a cd or an mp3 cd, if you stop playing the cd, the thing wont remember where you left of. i personally don't like that cuz i want to hear an mp3 cd over several days without having to hear the same songs over and over. but i can live with that cuz i have my sony dne330 walkman cd player easily taking care of my mp3 cd's on clearbass level 2 (can go to clearbass level 3 but that is already too much bass and the boombox can take it without distortion) bottom line if only it had that damn backlight display it would be perfect. but who knows, maybe sony will put it in on next years model.

I bought this almost a year ago to play the Bible on CD in the kids room at night. They love it! I like the REPEAT ALL and 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120min self timer functions. As for sound quality... this is an entry-level player, hence the model number 01. It is not a "boom box". No one said it was a "boom box". It is what it is.
It has worked flawlessly for us for almost a year and still working fine. I recommend this product for what it is.
Great bargain in small portable digital Radio/CD Player.......2007-02-05
Sony has packed a lot into a very small and inexpensive package in the CFD-S01. It has full digital tuning and volume control with memory. The FM sensitivity is very good and the sound is clear and sharp. True, it doesn't have a lot of bass, but then it is a light-weight portable. Producing a lot of bass takes a lot of power and drains battery life. So it is a decision you have to make: do you want lots of bass or long battery life? You can't have both. This little portable will last all week on a set of batteries and it sounds great!

Glad to have an all-in-one portable, compact unit, but the sound, especially on FM radio is not consistent and antenna needs to be adjusted frequently (and doesn't always seem to help much). Also,the presets are difficult to manage.

The CD door is very hard to close and all the buttons are very hard to operate. I would return this if I bought it from a local store.
