3 out of 5 stars What does "ambient" mean?.......2005-10-29

This must be a WinModem type of modem. I bought it to use with Phone Tray Free, which requires a modem with Caller ID and Voice capabilities. Neither worked with Phone Tray Free. Maybe the Jaton modem didn't recognize my Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2. I went back to my US Robotics 56K V.90 Faxmodem, Model 5687 bought back in 1998, which doesn't have Voice but does recognize Caller ID in this particular software. I'm still trying to find a non-ambient Caller ID/Voice PCI modem.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2007-12-03

Over time I have bought two of these modems. The first one lasted me a little while longer but this last one is a piece of royal junk. Like one other review I read, it will time out on me after being connected for only a short time. It will be trying to send requests out while not accepting data back in. I wont be buying one of these for long time.

1 out of 5 stars Modem Almost Works Right.......2007-08-05

A big thumbs down!!

Installed seamlessly and seemed to work OK untill I tried to send a fax to a real fax machine. It will not connect. Conclude that it is modem problem and not the fault of the remote fax machines since I have two other computers (an HP and a "brand X") both of which comunicate with the fax machines.

Have tried both the default Windows XP and the latest USR drivers with same results.

So far USR unhelpful.

Stay with USR for modems, you can't go wrong there !

5 out of 5 stars Despite the bad reviews, this modem works great for me........2006-07-22

How I came by this modem is a funny story...

A friend put my current system together for me and he included a "Modem Blaster" from Creative Labs (makers of SoundBlaster cards). I had a lot of problems with that modem (wildly varying connect speeds, transfer speeds that dropped over time, etc). It recently got fried by lightning.

I had picked up an old computer that someone had put out for trash pickup, but which I hadn't done anything with. I checked the back and saw phone jacks, so I opened the case and discovered this modem sitting in one of the slots. I pulled it out and installed it in my system. Then I pulled my old system out of the closet (with an ISA slot modem, which I can't use on this system), went online, went to USR's site, downloaded the driver and put it on a floppy disk. I then installed the driver on this system and attempted to dial my ISP.

It connected at 50666 on the first try, and almost always connects at that speed. Where my old modem would get a max speed of about 5.4K a second, this one consistently gets 6K a second and the speed doesn't seem to drop over time like the other one.

I can't explain why it works for me, but yet so many others have problems with it. I've never been a big fan of "winmodems", but I have to say that this one works much better than the one I was using.

For the record, I'm using Windows 98SE on a 1.8Ghz Pentium with 512MB of RAM.

1 out of 5 stars Pitiful.......2006-06-18

My girlfriend got this for her computer and when it didn't work I was called in to rectify the problem. I've been performing onsite hardware/software support for over 10 years and, despite every trick, common sense step, heck I even read the directions to see if they would shed light, I was unable to get it to detect the modem. Playing around with windows, bios PNP settings, drivers, IRQs..etc I was unable to get the modem to even be picked up by the computer, I thought it was a bad modem until I read a lot of the reviews/tech questions on the net related to it and found the exact same problems. My advice is to try another modem. Note: USR offers Windows XP 'certified' drivers on their site but it's kind of hard to download them when you're trying to install a modem so you can connect to the internet in the first place.

USR needs to seriously examine their QA testing if this product is any example of it.

Product Description

The U.S. Robotics 56K Performance Pro Modem brings home and small business users the superior performance of controller-based online communication for faster throughput. It also means that users aren't limited to Windows-based applications. This modem supports Linux and Windows, so it will work with a wide range of business applications and games. And speaking of games, you can switch the Performance Pro Modem into gaming mode any time you're ready for some online competition. Enhanced performance settings give you quicker response times. And when it's time to go back to the real world, just turn the gaming mode off - the modem automatically returns to its normal configuration. Advanced line probing technology finds the "potholes" in your V.92/V.90 connection. It tells your provider's equipment how to avoid the conditions that cause slowdowns and dropped calls. So the latest weather maps, live audio broadcasts, even streaming video come to you at the highest speed possible on your line. Even first-time modem users will find the Performance Pro Modem simple to install. All the necessary data and fax software and V.92 enabling utilities install easily from the Installation CD.

3 out of 5 stars Works OK, Not great.......2007-09-04

I am on a very old ATT phone line and my other modem kept dropping the line, read good reviews on this one and it does not drop the line as often, but connects at a slower speed. Was going to send it back, but decided it was better to stay connected at any speed, 21,6 than be in the middle of a pogo game and the line to drop. I called USR and they were not any help in getting a higher connect speed. It also takes a long time to get connected in the first place. ATT does not offer DSL in my area, they had rather spend their money buying other phone companies than take care of the customers they already have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant Modem.......2007-07-17

This is my second purchase of this modem as the first was fried by a near by lightening strike. After trying several modems with poor results, this modem gave the best performance with quick connections and never a dropped line. The transaction was perfect and I received the shipment even before the promised delivery date.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Modem!.......2005-04-12

I bought this modem to replace a 6 year old Conexent to see if I could pick up a little more speed. I wasn't expecting broadband, but I at least wanted to get maybe another kbps. Boy, what a LETDOWN! I couldn't get the connection speed above 19200! I'm not exactly a computer beginner and I tried everything that I could get from the software. No results. No matter if the speed was set at 57000 or 115200. Connect speed at 19200! No higher! With download speeds at a pathetic 2.0 kbps, I was beginning to think I regressed back to my old 486-14.4 days!
Also, As one of the other posters said, the software freezes in the middle of the installation. I run Windows Me, and I realize it is not the most stable of OS's but if the System Requirements say it should run on Win Me it should run on Win Me. I got the drivers on but if I didn't push the reset button it would probably still be stuck in freeze mode! Then I checked out the website for driver updates. I had to look long & hard for the model I had, but I eventually found it. The README description was nothing like the drivers. I don't even know if they WERE drivers. I didn't bother trying to install them. I didn't want to make the situation worse. Then, I tried their email tech support, figuring I had nothing else to lose. Mistake again. Oh, they responded the very next day and asked me to do a check on my system configuration, which I did, but after I responded, that was the last I heard from them. This is why I despise email tech support. Most of the companies I've dealt with don't even respond once, let alone actually solve your problems. But I DID get results by taking this failure out and replacing it with a US Robotics 5699B. I know there is more negative feedback about the USR modem than there is positive on that product's site, but I was lucky with it. I connected at 37333 kbps and my download speeds are 4.0 (at least). I can even listen to a sound file while I'm downloading it (which I could never do before)! I'll never buy anything by Creative again. From now on I'll trust US Robotics!
Get ready for a return, Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Reliable Modem.......2005-01-07

This modem is great!! replaced a US Robotics 5699B which was hanging up and dropping connection. This one holds a solid connection without a hickup. Also, the Netwaiting software, which pops up to show you who is calling and let's you decide if you want to take the call or keep surfing, keeps a record of the numbers that have called you.

2 out of 5 stars Windows 98 Trouble.......2004-09-25

I tried installing the modem software in Windows 98 according to directions and had much difficulty. The software corrupted my registry a number of times, which I then had to restore. Software was poorly designed. I finally got it installed, and it is working fine. However, to avoid headaches, I would look for another modem if you have Windows 98.

5 out of 5 stars Well Satisfied.......2004-08-12

After purchasing this modem and receiving it 1 day early I read the enclosed instructions and installed the modem as directed. I am well satisfied with the installation aspect and the perfomance of this modem.

Sys: PII/375mhz/128mb/Windows 98SE. Utterly pathetic. The instructions tell you to cancel the Windows hardware wizard and use their installation CD. Using the CD, the driver installation takes 5 minutes. It just hangs there saying, "Please wait awhile." When you "finish" and try to exit the install via the Exit button, it attempts to register online, starts to install some registeration (?) program, fails at that, and freezes. Ctrl-Alt-Del, demoshield not responding. Hmmm? End task. When you go to Windows and check the device manager the modem is listed, shows no conflicts, so it must have worked, right? You make a dial-up connection and give it a try. It dials out and, after giving you enough time to go and make a sandwich, eat it, and brush your teeth (perhaps floss), it logs in at laughable 19,200 bps, receives a few bytes, and promptly disconnects. I checked for updated drivers, IRQ conflicts, swapped PCI slots, etc., etc. Same thing. This card sucks. This card was supposed to replace a 6+ year old USR 56k external, which worked on the same system just fine up until it died (electrical storm I think). How do you pronounce Broadxent anyway?!?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Works as good as any DialUp!.......2006-10-03

This is a dial up modem people. They are all slow. Faster means you can do one load of laundry while site loads, verses two loads of laundry. Get DSL or cable if you want fast. This modem does exactly what it says and depending on your area and ISP it can go a Tiny bit faster than some modems.

I give it 5 stars because I never had any issues with this modem, just my ISP. I have moved on to cable, because I surf a lot. If you're a surfer, spend the $50 a month and get cable. Otherwise stop whining and go do a load of laundry:)

1 out of 5 stars no speed advantage; uninstalling was a disaster.......2006-06-06

I bought the modem for 2 reasons: everything was supposed to be faster (making the connection, downloading, etc) and the modem-on-hold feature. Comparing it with my 7-year-old generic modem, the connection time with the Blaster modem is only about a second faster. Downloads are definitely not faster, and may be slower; phone line conditions vary, so it's impossible to say for sure. Definitely not enough speed advantage to make it worth the money!

The modem-on-hold feature is interesting; I've not seen any other modem that advertised outgoing modem-on-hold. I had the opportunity to try both the outgoing and incoming only once each. They worked fine, but they're limited by the time limit the ISP imposes; in my case, 3.5 minutes per call. Caller ID worked also, on the incoming call.

Here's the real problem: Because I felt the download speeds were slower than my previous modem, I removed the Blaster and reinstalled my old modem. As soon as I tried to use the old modem, the computer went into reset. Removing the software and the drivers didn't make any difference; the only way to start the computer was with no modem installed. With both modems out, I uninstalled drivers and the MOH software. Ran Norton Systemworks trying to clean up any left over mess. Tried everything I could think of, but as soon as I reinstalled my old modem and the driver for it, the computer went into reset. I finally had to use my backup software to restore the computer to the way it was before I installed the Blaster modem. Everything worked fine then, using my old modem.

1 out of 5 stars Very Slow.......2005-10-18

I bought this modem with the anticipation of a little faster hook up than my original v-90. However, I was very disappointed in the speed and most of the websites I would go to never fully loaded. After running some diagnostics and upgrading whatever software I could, there was still no improvement. I sent it back and bought a cheaper US Robotics which works great

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Results.......2005-09-06

I bought the PCI version, (DI5631) and at first couldn't get it to even load a single page. Then I noticed it was trying to load CREATIVE's own site. The software had changed my home page! I do NOT like that.
In addition, the 'extra' software included on the CD requested a serial number... One I never saw anywhere, nor was there anything telling me where to find it.
Once I changed my home page back to my ISP's proper home page, the modem seemed to work well enough... but seems no faster than the one I had before. I will have to do more checking to see if different times of day have any effect on this.
One last item... The "TAD" cable. There wasn't one.
Overall... I am not at all sure this modem was worth my trouble, given that I had a working V.90 modem already. For someone who is still in the dark ages, (33kbs type or older) this modem MAY be a worthwhile upgrade. For most everyone else, I think it's probably NOT worth the money. (By the wat, Creative DOES offer a full, DSP version for PCI, and that one may be a better choice) The one I bought is HSP, not DSP. (HSP means your computer does a lot of the work, DSP means the modem does most of it)
Junkman

3 out of 5 stars OKAY.......2005-01-21

I bought a Creative Modem Blaster External Serial a while ago (I don't remember when.) At first I couldn't get the Netwaiting to work right, even though I have call waiting and caller id. But later I reinstalled it and it worked. And for some reson Netwaiting doesn't work again (I've been downloading many things such as a new Opera browser.) But It was great while it lasted. However the faxing software doesn't work when you're using the modem to connect to the internet. This is great if you know how to download it. Also beware when upgrading your computer.

Zoom V92 V44 Pci Internalcontrollerless Fax Modem

Product Description

The Zoom/Modem V.92 PCI Model 3025 is a high-performance fax modem that plugs into a PCI slot of a Windows-based computer. The Model 3025's performance is enhanced by an on-board DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and ITU V.92 / V.44 standard compatibility. The Zoom/Modem V.92 PCI outperforms V.90 modems. ITU V.92 is a new standard for dialup modems. It, and its companion compression standard V.44, makes communications faster, easier and more enjoyable. The "automatic negotiation" or "handshake" at the beginning of a call can be over twice as fast with Zoom/Modem V.92 models than with V.90 modems. The new V.44 compression technology results in significantly faster Web browsing and download speeds. Upload speeds (before compression) with Zoom/Modem V.92 models can be up to 40% faster, too. As an added convenience, the Zoom/Modem V.92 PCI allows an incoming phone call to be received without losing an Internet connection. These dramatic improvements in performance are available to Zoom/Modem V.92 users whose ISP (Internet Service Provider) has upgraded to the new standard. The Zoom/Modem V.92 PCI Model 3025 is capable of receiving data from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or online service over standard phone lines at speeds up to 56 Kbps uncompressed. Outgoing data is transmitted at speeds up to 48 Kbps. The Zoom/Modem Model 3025 includes V.80 capability for compatibility with H.324 standard point-to-point video telephony over regular phone lines. It also supports Group 3, Class 1 Fax. The Model 3025 also features ZoomGuard. ZoomGuard provides superior protection against lightning, the number one cause of modem failure. ZoomGuard is not only better than the "varistor" protection found on other modems, but also outperforms most stand-alone surge protectors.

2 out of 5 stars Expensive Modem, Not Worth It.......2007-07-18

Price is too high for what it offers.
There's nothing extraordinary about this modem. Hardware is the same found and much more inexpensive ones.
I'd say, save your money!

1 out of 5 stars Big Let Down.......2006-05-19

When I received this I was expecting a lot. I did a clean install and dialed up. It worked great. I have never gotten more then 52.1 kbps and now I was seeing 53.2 kbps! Later, after rebooting i was unable to make a connection. I set up a new network connection. That worked until I rebooted. Could not get online. Made a new network connection. Could not get online. Re-installed the software after doing a clean removel. Could not get online. O.K., maybe I just got the first card off the line on Monday morning or maybe not. It's going back and I am not going back to Zoom.

2 out of 5 stars No Caller ID as claimed.......2006-03-11

This may be a great modem, but it doesn't provide Caller ID as I expected. While it does provide caller ID as part of Modem-On-Hold, it doesn't provide it for every incoming call. If you check out this product on the zoom web page, it says
* Caller-ID. No caveats or mention of Modem-On-Hold. This is false advertising, so I'm returning my modem.
