When combined with the units' 121 privacy codes, users have a choice of up to 2,662 sub-channels to ensure privacy. These radios are built with a unique circuit that automatically switches to battery-saver mode if there are no transmissions within 10 seconds, thereby extending the battery life, let you choose between High, Medium and Low power settings (GMRS only) to either maximize range or extend your battery life, and a time-out timer that limits transmit time to three minutes, preventing accidental ongoing transmissions and even further extending battery life. What's more, they come with a belt clip to secure your radios while you are on the go, and include a key lock that eliminates accidental channel changes. For added convenience, these MicroTalk radios include a VOX function with five selectable levels of sensitivity, which will detect the user's voice and transmit without the need to press any buttons, freeing your hands for other tasks.

Excellent radios.......2007-11-01
I purchased my first Cobra FRS 3 mile radios around 9 years ago and still work perfectly. The LI 7000 radios are a huge evolution in range, features and specialy battery capacity (1500 mAh) which is the best I've seen for this radio type.
In regard to the range you can select the power setting acording your needs and be aware that channels 8-14 work only on LOW power setting because they are FRS; for channels 1-7 (FRS/GMRS) and 15-22 (GMRS) you can select HI, MED or LOW. I use them successfully from my office to a 4 mile range into the city with the Hi power setting and channels 1 through 7.
Not as good as it says.......2007-07-26
The range is not all that. The 2-3 second delay is terrible. And how do I put it on a maximum range? I have tried what the manual says and doesn't work.
Very Good for non-professional radios.......2007-05-31
Being an Amateur Radio Operator I am very tough to please with radios like this. I am used to radios made for emergency communication that are the same quality as police and fire radios. In addition I have walkie talkies that go through repeaters that can communicate for hundreds of miles. HF radios communicate around the world.
I purchased these for a cruise. The UHF frequencies go through metal better than lower VHF. Having the extra power helps to. Even though they will have a reduced range on things like a ship, they really do pretty well. Having the security codes prevent interference from other people who may be using the same frequency. Overall worth the money.
This radio also has a 1350mah battery that lasts much longer than so many other cheap walkie talkies. This is probably the best one made.
25 mi range? on what planet...?.......2007-05-14
I bought these with the knowledge that manufacturers inflate their claims of quality regardless of the product. So, I'm thinking, if they claim a 25 mile range, certainly that's under optimal conditions. With this in mind, I was sure these would work for me at a range of at least 15% of their claim. That's about 3 3/4 miles. Surely if they claim a range of 25, I can get 3 3/4, right? WRONG!I live in a small town with small short buildings, no sky scrapers etc. Very few obstructions in fact. My line-of-sight range is less than 3 city blocks. Save your money folks. Buy flowers for your girlfriend gentlemen, or, ladies spend the money on a manicure. Just don't waste it on these 2 way radios.
Good radios except for a glitch.......2007-05-12
I purchased these radios a few months ago. Today I went to see what reviews had been posted. The only one says that he found a 2-3 second delay in transmitting, something quite annoying. Curiously, one of mine has the same problem, only one of them. After doing some experimenting, I found that this problem occurs only while using the DCS privacy channel encoding. Using CTCSS does not create this problem. Other than that, I am very happy with the radios. They feature maximum 5-watt output, the maximum legal. I have been updating my two way radios since the first two-mile (0.5 watt)came out, always being somewhat disappointed with the range results. These do have a noticeable improved range over the Cobra 17-mile I had before (with which I was happy enough until one of them was dropped in a lake, never to be found).
A few weeks after writing the above, 1 of the Li Ion batteries gave up. It would just simply not charge at all. I called Cobra customer service and they told me to return them for warranty repair. I still have not received them back. I will let you know how it goes. I did include a letter mentioning the 2-3 second delay, as well as the fact that the battery charger never turns off even after the batteries are fully charged, as opposed to a previous model I had. I called this by its name: a major design step back.

Best Walkie-Talkie Set.......2007-07-04
This set, for those whose wallets aren't bottomless, is as good as it gets. They come with compact headsets, the walkie-talkies have incredibly fast VOX response, they have a dock charger and come with chargeable batteries, the dock charger has an AC adapter and a cigarette lighter adapter, they're noise suppression systems are excellent and their range is great. Love them.
Great radios.......2007-01-10
I am most happy with these radios. They look wonderful, operate effeciently and have a long battery life.
A NICE PAIR!!.......2007-01-06
I've had these for only 2 days and I couldn't be happier. The range and clarity are great, even on low power. Even amongst trees and buildings, I was able to hear and transmit clearly for at least a mile to 1 1/2 miles. I've yet to use the high power feature on channels, 1-7 and 15-22 but I will very soon. I'm a weather spotter so these are going to come in really handy once Spring gets here in a few months. These are definitely worthy of a 5 star rating especially for the price.
Good Radios.......2006-12-08
The range on this radios is excellent. I have used them in a suburban area for a range of 3 miles without a problem. The 5 watts of output help. The menus are easy to use. However, the volume is not very high. A stronger speaker would help. The battery life for the rechargeables is great. The size is also good. I like the smaller antena vs. other models with long ones. I would have given it 5 stars if the volume was a little higher. I would definitely buy these radios again.
The best yet.......2006-07-10
I've had several over the years. All have had interference problems. These don't, because of the privacy codes. The range is also the best I've ever had. Very easy to use, even in the dark. An excellent buy.

Practical Radios.......2007-12-15
These radios work great for the way we use them. We use them on a hi-powered station at Wal-Mart, the mall, etc. They did not perform as well on the low power stations. On hi power, they worked perfectly at Disney World. Even my wife admitted that these little radios came in handy. We are pleased overall.
We sent them back they worked so poorly!.......2007-11-02
Do not buy these two-way radios. We took them on a 2000 mile RV trip, so we had plenty of time to use them. We finally gave up and threw them in the glove box in frustration. The talk button is a soft button about 2" long, on the side of the unit, and unless you press it in exactly the right spot and at exactly the right pressure, it does not work. Maddening, to say the least.
Work great.......2007-10-14
They work great. They are solidly built and have several features. The interface is fairly simple to use. I have not tested the full range yet so I can't speak to that.
A heads up for ALL.......2007-09-28
Trust me, I just bought two sets, opened one and immediately returned the other. If you're lucky (and I do mean lucky) you might (just might) get about a 2 mile range providing there are very few trees, only one story homes, and hills no larger than can be traversed in under two minutes.
In my opinion, this rule of thumb would probably go for ANY brand walkie-talkie selling for less than a hundred bucks apiece that doesn't require an FCC license to operate.
I guess EXPERIENCE, along with lost money, IS the best teacher.
A toy all 40 - 60 year old kids can enjoy.......2007-08-18
It's a four star rating for the simple reason that I have not yet come across a hand held GMRS/FRS radio that can cover even a third of the mileage they are rated for . . .
The GMRS channels require an FCC license on HI power, but their are plenty of low power options where no license is required.
During my research the maximum output power for GMRS is listed at 5 watts for many models on the market. Even at higher power settings, I have had difficulty getting units to work in a two mile area over open water in urban areas.
That being said, the LI4900 is compact, well made and very clear, when you are out and about playing with the other kids.
As I was paddling across the water in search of prey, another kayaker couldn't help but press the button on his radio to declare to the rest of the fleet that he had a "fish on".
It didn't take long for the other 42 to 63 year olds to start chattering back and forth like children playing Army in their backyards. "Over and out" . . ."Rodger" and "You call THAT a fish . . that is so small you couldn't use it for bait" wisecracks echoed across the bay for the better part of a half hour.
For outdoor-person gatherings of two or more, hand held radios keep the communication going and take the fun to a higher level.
This model Cobra radio is an excellent model for these purposes and the NoAA weather channels truly come in handy.
Just keep in mind, a waterproof pouch is needed to protect the product and it cannot deal with even simple submersion. This is the shortcoming of all of these types of radios in my opinion.

cobra pr170.......2007-12-07
The items arrived on the date specified. But after charging them i found out that one of the units did not transmit or recieve. This was disappointing as we wanted to use them at Disney world instead of our phones. Was told I could exchange them but problem was that we were leaving in 4 days no way to get them back in time.
Battery life aweful.......2007-12-02
These were rated for 8miles - and if you've ever done any research on these type of 2-way radios...regardless of the rating, if you're able to get a 1 mile range from them, you're a lucky few. I fully expected that disappointment. However, what I did not expect was that the rechargeable batteries that it came with were aweful. On a full charge, it barely lasted a trip to the mall on less than mild usage. Btw...there is no indicator to say if it is fully charged. I charged it for the recommended 10 hrs. Anyway...I had another pair of refurb Uniden that I got for almost nothing...that pair was just as good, if not better than this one which I paid $45 including shipping. Not a recommendation.
8 Miles? What a joke........2007-07-14
These radios are labeled as having an 8 mile distance "under ideal conditions", but what exactly is "ideal"? Do you have to be 8 miles apart in the middle of the ocean (NOTHING in the way)? We can't get these things to work for ONE mile, let alone 8.
I bought an extra set for my brother and his wife, and they have the same exact problem, so it's not just my set. In fact, his set won't even hold a charge for more than 5 minutes.
The golden rule for consumers really holds true here - you get what you pay for! If you want two-way-radios that REALLY work for 8 miles, you'll have to spend the money for a much better set. If you only need them for close proximity, under 1 mile, these will suffice.
**Edit**
So it turns out I got not only one, but THREE bad sets of radios from this seller... upon further inspection, we realized that each of the 6 radios were going dead in a matter of 20 minutes, no matter what batteries we used.
I'm glad Cobra is such a professional and trusted company - after one quick phone call, I was prompted to send the three sets back, and in around 8 business days I received 3 new sets that actually work longer than 20 minutes. It wasn't the radios, it was the seller apparently trying to rid of defective units. 3 different sets of radios that ALL went dead after 20 minutes? Coincidence? I think not. Don't buy from this seller.
Unfortunately, the transmission distance of 8 miles is still a crock, but at least they don't die after 20 minutes.
Wish there'd been more reviews..........2007-06-16
Okay, first question, why so few reviews? You go on to Amazon.com for the most obscure products, like "Ladies Nylon Ant removers," (remove those pesky ants from your Nylons before you dress in the morning ladies) and you'll see 72 reviews from mostly satisfied customers.
This product for some reason only had one other review. Not sure why. I ordered based on that one review. Mistake.
I got my Cobra PR170-2VP Micro Talk GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radios from Amazon in excellent time, very quickly, I thought. I followed the directions to charge up the batteries, and use the product. But for some reason, the sound kept cutting out. I also had problems with functioning radios. I would get about 5 minutes use out of a radio, before the "battery" seemed to stop working. I wasn't sure.
I tried completely new batteries in both radios, and only one consistently worked. Also, the battery indicator never showed "full" so I wasn't even sure if that meant "full battery" or not completely charged, or whatever? Since only one radio was working, it was difficult to tell if it even worked. And how soon before it mysteriously stopped working.
Very poor quality, and I am returning them today. Not recommended. Perhaps I got a bum pair, but like my fellow reviewer from June, I will be also going on vacation soon (to Disneyland) but right now, in June, and I've no time to wait for a refund, or return. I've purchased another pair of Cobra's from Circuit City, which is a step or two up from this model. And they work perfectly!!! And Circuit City even matched this price, as they'e pricing card was incorrectly displayed and they had to lower the price from $50.00. My lucky day.

Compact & Compatible.......2007-06-08
I love these little walkie-talkies! Got a pair of two and got to more coming for our vacation this coming August. Smaller that what you think, but thats not a bad thing. Easy to carry around and has a belt clip for even MORE CONVENIENCE! Ideal for men or women and works great. Rechargable batteries and charger INCLUDED. PS: Amazon and AntOnline are the best for shipping purposes, never had a problem with either on.

Another great attribute of the GMR1038-2CK radios is their hands-free operation, which is made possible by a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) that can be used for automatic voice transmission. Transmission begins when you speak into the optional remote headset for snappy, hands-free communication that is both safe and efficient. The large number of channels and privacy codes give you several communication options that ensure you can almost always talk with your friends and family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. Plus, the channels are easy to find, thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses to active channels while you watch the display. And the channel monitor function listens for weak signals on a given channel with the press of a key.
Additional features include a backlit LCD display that is easy to read under any lighting conditions, a keypad lock that prevents your settings from being accidentally changed, and a choice of five different call tones that offer distinctive ring options to easily identify who's calling. The radios are also equipped with a battery strength meter that monitors the status of the batteries so you can always stay in touch, a key beep audio confirmation of each button you press, and a "roger beep" tone to confirm to other users that you're done speaking. The built-in headset jack is for the optional headset mic, which provides hands-free operation. These radios are equipped with a charging unit that makes it easy to keep your radios charged and ready to go, and the radios can also be powered by four AAA alkaline batteries (not included).

I got the $25 and free shipping offer, for this price they have no match...
well, they do work.......2007-08-05
Bought this pair to go with another set of earlier models we have.
What a waste of time and money. Uniden should be ashamed of themselves!
Oh, they work just fine, but the rechargable battery life is ABISMAL!(sp?)
After less than four hours of hanging on my belt, with all of ten minutes of transmit time, the "low battery" warning beep goes off, and the battery gauge shows "all gone"!.
The older set we use will last thru a ten hour shift, no problemo!
Ah well, live and learn eh?
don't try on cruise.......2007-06-25
we got 2 sets of these at ubermart and tried them out first. they didn't make it past 2 miles in an area by a lake with little residential.
it is good at this price........2007-06-02
i bought this product for short distance communication. it is said it could work up to 10 miles, however, in my area it can reach out less than 1 mile. partially, it may be due to my area is hilly.

The radios are wonderful. They work just as described. We use them from vehicle to vehicle on our way and person to person while in place. They're great.

Very durable and the fact that they are rechargable is plus! Perfect for camping. The range is actually what they said it would be and the reception is extremely good.
They are very good and do reach out........2007-08-12
We haven't used them that much so far but I know they will come in handy when we do need them. My husband works outside a lot and this way I can keep a close check on him when he is out side and I am in the house, and to let him know when he has a phone call, or when he needs something. It has been to hot for him to be outside the last couple weeks and we haven't really put them to the total test. Midland it one of the best so I am looking foward to using them.
Work like they're supposed to.......2007-07-23

Works good for me. .......2007-11-24
I've had this for over 2 years and its worked very well. I am very pleased with it. It has all the functions you'd need out of a walkie talkie at an affordable price. The only thing is, I dont think you could get more than 2 miles out of this. Anyone who thinks any walkie talkie would give you more than 2 miles is dreaming anyways. I mainly use it for going to the malls, or shopping, it saves a lot of cell phone time and the best part is people think you are a cop or security then they see you use it. It's kind of cool to use.
Don't buy it .......2006-11-10
They didn't work when I needed them to. I am in Iraq and needed them to work, they could not pick each other up. I was not happy. Now they just sit there collecting dust.....
Midland LXT 410 2-Way Radio's.......2006-08-05
The Midland LXT410 walkie talkies are nice. They have a great sound and fairly easy to operate.
The 12 Mile Range is a BIG stretch...We got approx. 1 1/2 miles before they started really breaking up.
But we purchased them for a much closer use (mainly around houses)so they seem to working out fine so far.
I would recommend these for anyone who needed some great sounding but closer range walkie talkies.

Works Great.......2006-03-24
This works great, but the range is a load of bull. It works up to about 6 miles. It might work at 12 miles if you were on the ocean or a lake, but that's about the only way 12 miles is possible. Works great and highly durable.

Midland Radios with headset.......2007-01-10
Radios are great and work well over long distances even in built up areas. I bought the headsets to use with motorcycle helmets but they allow to much wind noise for that use.
Midland GTX550.......2007-01-09
Excellent radio. This radio has silent mode, good range in the hills, weather radio, many sub codes. It is much better than the new model, 650, because the 650 has compatability problems with other GMRS radios. A good choice.
Very good two-way radio set..........2007-01-04
If you are looking for a good all-around hand held communicator this really merrits consideration. Very good design, comfortable to use and adequately powerful for the job. Took them on a recent bear hunt and could easily monitor all that was going on back in camp even though the action was two canyons away.
He is not the fiance.......2006-12-23
A few months ago it buys two radios. Both radios have two problems. First: When the battery this very low becomes crazy. they begin to vibrate and there is no form to stop them. The only form is to retire the batteries to them. Due to that I am called on to open them. Second problem: In the packing it says that that resistant the splashes, but when opening we did not see them any protencion against the water.

Motorola Two Ways Are Convenient.......2007-05-12
I purchased these two ways after reading reviews. They seemed to offer what I needed and were not too heavy. I went on a cruise with a number of girlfriends and they worked so great for keeping in touch. We laughed alot at the language "ten, four, & breaker, breaker" kind of stuff but they were great. One friend brought her mom who is elderly and one night she was tired and stayed in the room. We left one radio with her in case she needed to reach us and took the other. We wore them on the backs using the clips so they didn't interfere with sitting or standing. I feel pretty sure they will come in handy for alot of things.
Not the radios for rail buggy enthusiast!!!.......2007-05-04
I purchased these radios, only in yellow, for my 13 yr old daughter when we gave her a railbuggy( off road go cart). Motorola was supposed to be a good name. I no longer feel that way. After charging the radios and testing them around the house and the yard, worked well. BUT, the first time we took them out with our rail's, which the area we ride is flat with a light tree line and small hills and jumps just beyond the tree line. From the base camp to the riding area is about 1/4 mile. My daughter and a friend were out riding and when she did not pass us for five minutes we tried to radio but heard no response! We went out to find her and she had wrecked! Luckily, no one was injured but needed to be towed and was scared since she had tried to radio us but had no response. The radios did NOT work. We tested the radios in several spot around the area we ride including flat open area of fields and they still did not work. I am going to be returning them and will not be getting any motorola radios in the future. My daughter is too important for me. If your husband wants to call for a beer from the backyard, This is the perfect radio but not for outdoor rides!!
Happy with Gift.......2007-03-16
Rec'd as a gift and have yet to try a real world, hilly terrain test but seem to be stronger on outdoor to indoor conversations. Backyard is 70 yaeds from the living room and thru 5 block walls and conversation was clear and easy.
Set up is a snap
Returned Item.......2007-01-11
I cannot review this item because I returned it. I did not receive this item until 12/24/06. Much, much too late.

Midland 12 Mile Range, with Charger and Rechargeable Batteries.......2007-01-04
The vote is still out on this one. My husband hunts a lot, and our family camps even more. We own "walkie talkie" talk devices, but I was looking for something with greater clarity and range. So far he gets greater range on the farm, if both handlers are outside. However, if one is inside the barn, range is only about 2-3 miles. I was hoping for a consistent 5 miles. The charger and batteries work great! We will just have to wait and see what happens this summer when we are out in the mountains camping. If you see one floating down the stream you will know my final vote is in...
Midland GXT410VP#.......2007-01-03
I had previous experience with the older GXT310 walkie talkies and decided to upgrade to this more powerful set. I have been disappointed. I purchased 2 sets of (2)each and when received one did not work right out of the box. Another quite working within a two week period and even though they are rated at 12 mile range, they dont seem to reach out any further than the older units.
Not quite what I wanted.......2006-07-18
I was hoping for a pair of radios that could be stored on the chargers until needed. Thus the radios would always have full batteries. Alas, this was not the case. The charger always charges and will destroy the batteries if left on there continually. So instead, I have to charge the batteries and then unhook the base from the wall to use the base to store the radios.
They seem to work well otherwise. They are large due to essentially using AA batteries. I will update this in the future with any additional information.
Piece of junk.......2006-03-23
They worked for 22 days...Now one does not x-mit...the other won't hold a charge....JUNK!!! Never Buy Midland products...I WAS Warned....but did it anyway and Amazon does not back them !!!JUNK....JUNK...JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
