I wanted a way to record my favorite TV show to my hard-drive while I was at work.
TiVo would do this but not to my hard-drive. This worked GREAT and still does!!
It is extremely difficult to find anything that works on *INX that will do this. BTW I am also burning all of my old VCR tapes to my iTunes folder and now can take them with me. I thought I was going to have to re-purchase or worse yet destroy all of my VCR tapes. Now, I can watch my old favorites without adding yet another large piece of hardware to my Television Center. Also, with the ConvertX 402U I can now add my Video from my hand held without any problems. The quality from my camcorder is really good with both audio and video. If you have a LINUX box and are looking for a great way to capture any type of video I would highly recommend the Plextor PX-TV402U in Ubuntu Linux especially Gutsy.
Don't buy this!!! Incompatible with Vista.......2007-09-27
They make an expensive product and it is permanently incompatible with the upcoming OS upgrade and their response to customers is essentially "tough luck." This box is now obsolete after hardly being used and not so much as an significant upgrade discount offered.

If you're looking for MPEG1, keep looking. I don't what kind of MPEG1 files this product creates, but I couldn't use them. Don't but this box!
Not Compatible With Vista - Or XP Media Center.......2007-07-27
When I had XP Pro, this device was the most reliable I ever used. But now I have Vista. I called Plextor Support, and asked if they would be developing hardware/software fixes that would enable
Vista usage. The answer is a flat "NO." (They of course are now selling a new unit that is Vista-compatible)...so dont think of buying this expensive device if there's any chance you'll have to start using Vista soon (which I recommend you delay doing until you must "upgrade').
As for the included software, its not great. You'll probably have to buy a full-option suite. Ulead never recognized this device at all. Roxio recognized it, but is so buggy a program its definitely to be avoided.

I have not used the unit a lot, but when it worked, it worked very well. However, it no longer works at all. It lights up, it's all plugged in correctly. I've reinstalled the drivers two times. Checked it on two computers. It's done. So, this is very disappointing and I now have to figure out where and how to get it replaced. It's been handled gently, too, if you wonder. It's just sat on my desk the whole time I've had it. Just now, it's dead.

Watch out when you buy a DVI-I cable, since not all flat-panel displays allow the four extra pins at the analog end. By the way, the "I" at the end of DVI-I means that the digital and analog pins are all included, whereas the "D" at the end of the DVI-D means that the pins at the analog end are missing; and this makes the difference on whether it will plug in on some displays (mine is a new Dell and it does not allow any cable with the 4 extra analog pins to plug in at all). AND THIS IS MY COMPLAINT ABOUT AMAZAON'S DESCRIPTION: It says the DVI-I works with ALL flat-panel displays, but NO it doesn't, and now that I've already bought it and it arrived, there's nothing I can do with it except to buy another cable -- but this time a DVI-D, now that I've learned from these hard knocks! How can you tell what you need? Look at the DVI connector on your monitor and you will see a connector at one end that kind of looks like a dash. If it has two holes on both sides of that dash-looking connector, you need a DVI-I, otherwise, if NO holes are on both sides of that dash-looking connector, you need a DVI-D. If you get the wrong cable, it possibly won't plug in and you'll be in my spot too. Hopefully this will help you NOT buy the wrong cable because Amazon cheerfully says "Works with all digital flat-panels and liquid-crystal displays" under the features section of their webpage and you didn't know enough to know that you're possibly being misled (I'm not saying they did this deliberately; I'm just saying this statement may mislead you too, period, and trust doesn't matter since you'll still have a cable that won't plug in). It MAY work, depending! Buyer beware!
By the way, this is a high quality cable (thus the 5 stars), but it still won't plug in!

You need to connect the splitter to the PC and let Win detect and install it before connecting the kb & mouse to it. PC also booted with no error when kb connected to splitter (without changing the 'kb not present' signaling in BIOS)! Didn't try on Linux...

OK, I just wanted to put in my 2 cents like the rest - THIS THING DOESN'T WORK (at least for me). Unless you have time and energy to spare to troubleshoot and/or look for a driver, I suggest you pass this one up!

I'll sum it up quickly. Terrible software. Huge waste of time to get it working, although it did finally work. Then the case fell apart within one month requiring glue and tape, which held another month. Then replacement with a quality product. Steer clear!
Terrible Documentation.......2006-09-12
Once you get past the terrible documentation, at least it does what it is supposed to. The drivers that ship with it are worthless. Mine was one with the moschip chipset. There is a separate driver on the q-stor website and the documentation contains these intstructions (I have edited them so I hope they are a little more clear). I spent several hours trying to get this thing working, so I am posting my experience so you don't have to waste your time.
Unplug the QIRU2

Run setup file
Reboot computer
Plug in the QIRU2
Windows will install it. In device manager you will see an entry for the IRDA adapter with a yellow mark over it (exclamation point) (To get to the Device Manager right click My Computer, choose properties, click the hardware tab)
Double click on the moschip adapter in the device manager window, click DRIVER tab, click Update Driver.
Select "Install from a list or specific location
Choose " Don't Search. I will Choose the driver to install
Select " USB SIR Adapter
Click NEXT. It will install automatically.
If the installer prompts you indicating that the driver is unsigned, choose continue.

I installed this device on my XP PC but my effort has been unlucky. I used some tips from past reviewers like uninstall it and try again but it doesn't work at all. I also downloaded the drivers from the q-stor site but they are the same that comes with the cd.
I think this item was a waste of money.
